Mama was absolutely right, he’s talking down to himself the entire song dealing with depression and survivors guilt. Thank you so much for checking it out. Also as mentioned, “i” is a continuation of this song so you should def check it out someday
Thank you mama for continuing ❤ as a mother too who’s dealt with this level of pain too, is why Kendrick is one of my favorites of al time. His words transcend to all audiences
Your mom was spot on. Kendrick wrote this song in the booth and recorded the vocals with the lights turned off. The producer said it was a really uncomfortable session because he just recorded while Kendrick was battling his demons right in front of him. She's extremely perceptive!
I’m so sorry for my little breakdown , it was a combination of the song and also my personal fight. I will try to record as much as possible till surgery, but it ain’t easy . Be kind 🙏
Don’t be sorry for something you cannot control, we all understand. We wish you the best. I’ve loved you and your sons channel pretty much since the beginning and having my name on the Patreon list white board. You’ll win this fight
@MommaTaunT I hope you'll be fine, don't feel sorry it is great to show us how you feel some times. I'm a young guy from Cameroon (Africa) I was really young when I lost my own child and her mom on the same day and I blamed myself for it so much, and I was lost. Kendrick's music makes me feel great at times when I think about everything that happened to me I was just 16 years old at that time. Thank you so much for your advice in this video, you said at times its okay to feel sorry for yourself.
kdot's non-mainstream songs actually becomes more pleasing to the ears the more you listen to it. I actually would listen to U more than humble. That little break, the beat change + kdot's breaking voice is something else.
yeah, my eyes are in tears right now. I'm a grown men and I'm tearing. The way he delivers his emotions onto the song paints this really dark place that I've been avoiding.
@@hmm6415 people with no depth usually say that, let me guess, you think the bible is literal, and dont get that its layers? Ok then “im reaching” happy?
@@boopy12g its saying that god is the “i am” i am is the soul the true self that is connected to god, i am _______, i am is the unseen part of you and the blank is your name which is connected to the physical body, an analogy air is the “i am” the balloon is the “physical body” not literally just an analogy to explain so it is basically saying i am that that being the i am, do research on something called “esoteric writing” and “Straussian reading”
Mama is very emotionally intelligent. I didn’t get the meaning of the song the first time I heard this album. I wasn’t listening with intent, but it’s great that she understood it right away!
Your mother is absolutely correct. Kendrick admitted he was talking to himself. It's an emotional rollercoaster. I was battling suicidal depression and let me tell you. It's a tear jerker due to how relatable it is. God bless y'all for checking out more of Kendrick's music.
Bless your mother. Her feelings and interpretation is 100% correct. Because it’s hers. That’s what musical art is about. Her overstanding of what the song can be used for is the same as what I was thinking…… Sometimes when your in a dark place. Open your eyes to see the darkness.
Omg mom was spot on. He was talking to himself. I get what she said about not sonically pleasing but I have listened to TPAB fully at least 12 times since it was released. Kendrick fans know that Kenny makes music for himself first. He can make hits and sonically pleasing songs but at times it’s to remind everyone that he can. All his albums has a general theme for the most part and kinda reflects on his current state of life of state he’s coming out of. Forever a fan
Forever a fan too. Kendrick's music is really him inviting you to get a piece of his mind, heart and soul. He really paints a picture of his own shortcomings, trails and tribulations while also making you aware of your own
I loved watching this. I'm a fan of Kendrick Lamar and it's so touching to see someone so intuitively feel and understand his message. Mama was 100% right. This song is based on a true story of Kendrick falling into a depression whilst he was on tour- he locked himself up in a hotel room, drank a lot and had suicidal thoughts. He was dealing with survival's guilt because he felt he had abandoned Compton- following his recent rise to fame- and his community was still struggling with poverty and violence. Kendrick is particularly affected by an incident that occurred before he became famous, where his close friend's younger brother was shot and killed. If you listen to 'Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst' from his previous album- he recounts this story through the perspective of the older brother (First verse). There's also another song on To Pimp A Butterfly called 'These Walls' about Kendrick's vengeful thoughts against the murderer. So this incident is very much a recurring theme in Kendrick's discography. But back to 'U'...the song also addresses Kendrick's guilt over his sister getting pregnant at a young age- he felt that he failed to be a positive influence in her life, despite some of the songs on his past mixtapes that were made to uplift and positively influence young women. In general, Kendrick really struggles with self love. A lot of his music reflects that he does have an ego, but if you pay close attention you'll see he takes every opportunity to make himself smaller. The theme of duality is constant within his art. 'To Pimp A Butterfly' was designed to resemble the structure of a poem- so the songs are not necessarily meant to be sonically pleasing. But the album contains an immense amount of energy and is a beautiful emotional roller coaster. Sending you lots of healing energy Mama!
This is the most wholesome video I've seen in a while. I found that song recently while I was trying out some new things in my discography (I just found out abt Kendrick) and I'm starting to listen to albums from top to bottom in a 1 sit. This song absolutely destroyed me, I had to take a break from it (I did not finish TPAB just yet) and I keep listening to this track over and over. It really impacted me. As a recommendation I would request that you two listen to the album good kid mad city but more specifically "M.a.a.d City, Swimming Pools, Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thrist" in a row. It tells a story and when you get to the last soul it really is soulbreaking. Best wishes for both of you.
Love this comment. You'll appreciate Kendrick Lamar more when you listen to Overly Dedicated, Section 80, and the rest of his albums. They're all interlinked lyrically and plotwise.
I loved how your mom talked about how it’s ok to be “in the zone” of being sad, and when the next day comes you might realize that it’s not so bad, because funny enough that’s exactly what happens with the following song on to pump a butterfly. “We gon be Alright!!” You should definitely do a reaction to “Alright” soon with that context in mind
As an immigrant that went through architecture this song hit hard . Being 3000 Mike's from, home and everyone telling you yout worthless and you begin to doubt yourself and the talent within you . I graduated bu5 it was dark tjmes
I love how hip hop can be good and a way to show how depression really affects PEOPLE not just a black man but just people. I pray for your mom and deliverance from your situation. Also understanding because this world is scary and confusing. Love ❤
I love how sweet your mother’s spirit is because she’s so sincere. She didn’t miss anything. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to appreciate art that challenges and yet hit our own emotional triggers. I love the whole “To Pimp a Butterfly” Album as it challenges and pushes the listener as the artist dug deep into his emotions. That piece of wonderful art was powerful.
Please listen to I. It compliments this track as i believe that was celebrating him forgiving himself. Knowing he's human. We all make mistakes. I have both on a Playlist by themselves. Please listen to it.
seeing someone be this emotional when listening to music is such a beautiful thing and the magic that comes behind it is unexplainable. Kendrick is one of the most important artist of Hip-Hop and this reaction is why. The message is felt all abroad.
My prayers go out to you and your mother. Her reaction to this song is the truest form of emotion. This is the beautiful thing about hip hop, you can feel the pain and truth that artists like create with their art.
Mom’s interpretation is what Kendrick’s music makes you do! Or it’s what it should do if you allow yourself to go there! “I make music that electrifies them, you make music that pacifies them”
Actually i love when people are emotional, specially with kendrick music. He is a real artist and I cried a lot to “count me out” video. And everyone has been harsh to themselves sometimes in their lives. Your mom is so sweet soul and i feel it to how she accepts the music. Subscribed ❤
This is one of the realest thing i ever heard and i always thought of it , when u are in a bad mood and overwhelmed by whatever reasons or things and people telling u for example do not listen to sad music u ll be even more sad. Ok i get it and that might be also true ,but how long can u just lie to yourself that u r fine while u are actually not fine ( its okay to not be fine sometimes ) and that's why listening to something more sad ,emotional and realistic can be so much better cause u just relief urself from all the bad energy and thoughts or whatever just by crying or just simple listening to something more emotional
u and Sing About Me will always be my favorite Kendrick songs. I’ve been suicidal since elementary school and u helped me in 2015 which was the same year I was inches from ending it all. Still a struggle
Bro I love the sincerity and synchronicity of the head bob… like she really playing attention to her past..loving in the future with the same perception of different aspects
I am SO thankful for her translation, it hits so much deeper. I feel that's his subconscious telling him he doesn't have much time to clean out the guilt, depression, and inner demons, he must do it now👀
This song always hits home for me my first time listening to it gave me a slight anxiety attack triggered my childhood traumas in which made me hate myself truly unfortunate how common it is ❤ Listening to Kendrick is being forced into therapy though he’s songs resurfacing childhood traumas and showing how to heal them then let it grown instead
5:24 the power of Kendrick music n why he’s so versatile as an artist to be able to depict himself in such a light that millions of ppl can relate in their own way
I would say Kendrick Lamar is the first rapper to make me feel every emotion he has more than one song I cried at and it’s been times I didn’t cry at weddings and funerals
I’m new to your channel and I must say the mom’s reaction here is so pure that you can’t help but cry with her. She gets Kendrick’s messages so well with her perception of his music. Kendrick makes music for the heart. Things that challenges the core by exposing himself. That’s how we properly relate and grow as a society. When we take time to become vulnerable and realize that we’re not the only ones who go through life’s crazy courses, it makes coexisting and connecting so much better. This song is the epitome of “we are our own worst critics” Kendrick’s journey to love himself while trying to leave a positive impact with his music is something that needs to be studied in college courses
The way I look at "U" and "I". U is how i looked at myself when influence by the external, hence why it is "you". I is more about the perception that comes from within.
i got teary not the first time when i heard but the time when i understood the lyrics because I came from different country. This music is something you have to live with to understand.
I’m not sure what the full intent of this video may have been but I have to say I appreciate this review and Mom’s read of this song more than you’ll ever know. TPAB is probably my favorite album of all time, and I know this song all too well, from the message, to the chaos, down to the angle of Kendrick’s approach. I haven’t listened to this song in a long time; today im in a very dark place, fighting daily to find my way out and attempting to do my own self help therapy over the last 8-9 months. Hearing Mom’s read of the first phase of this track kinda sent me through a loop, it shifted Kendrick’s words directed at himself to me directing it to myself as I read the lyrics with you guys. This is the first time this song has ever reached me this way and I think I like this song even more now. Today may be my day to feel bad for myself, and for once it’s not a terrible feeling 😅 so I’ll say Thank you. Liking, subbing, and praying for Mom. Y’all are the shit❤
This moves me , I hope and wish the self help will get you where you want to be and it’s amazing that you have done this for yourself, that’s the biggest step you already took! I’m humbled that my interpretation made you look differently to the words of the song and that it helps you . But all credits to Kendrick for putting it out there and all credits to you for letting them help you . I wish you the best and more ❤❤❤
Praying for a successful surgery to Mom 🙏🏼 and absolutely love your reactions guys. ♥️ “Yes it is true, Kendrick was talking to himself but furthermore he was giving us (the listener) a chance to relate in that it is okay not be okay sometimes, once you realize that, you gain a new profound introspection of yourself, that allows you to be vulnerable enough to face your demons allow yourself a chance at coming out stronger.” First time I heard “u” it broke me down and “I” picked me up. Thanks again for the reaction. 🙏🏼🫶
Moms hit it on the button. He is definitely talking to himself. Survivors guilt and shame. This is very emotional for me to watch as well moms...I pray for you to heal and continue doing these videos with your son. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Don’t apologize for crying. We understand and we send love your way, most people have probably cried due to this song and plenty of others. Wish the best for you guys.
Your mom is a legend, the fact that she ca n connect to a song to that level on the first listen is incredible to say the least. She's the best brother! Cherish her forever.
RU-vid recommended me this video and i'm absolutely impressed at both, i can tell you inherited much of your dear mother's heart and your dear mom is a really sweet person. Showing that kind of emotional catharsis is not easy and she's so brave for that, bless her heart.
I haven't heard the song in a while and after replaying it I was nearly in tears. This is possibly a top 10 song for Kendrick's legacy and is an inspiration to how to write a self-reflection song. Thank you for sharing your reaction.
I just want to start by saying I appreciate the time and attention you take with your mother. That love is priceless. Also she was spot on with her Interpretation. There are a few things to take note of. The song is very dark but also very cultural. I wont say you have to had lived through it to understand or listen to it a lot, but I will say where you are in life can determine how you identify with this song. Also there definitely is a contrast in the way the songs U and I sound. But Kendrick is very intentional with his song choice and placement. It's in my honest to fully enjoy the Rollercoaster of this song. It is best paired with the following track on the album which is titled alright. I dont k ow if your mother has heard that one. I usually recommend listening to both songs together just for balance. I think you should let you mother hear alright and tell her to keep In mind that this is what comes next. I hope for nothing but the best for you and your family✌🏾
This is one of my favs from TPAB it’s sooooo poetic and unfortunately so relatable but so is “i” so listen to both he gets better lol but in real life I feel like a lot of ppl go in circles between u and i
You guys really need to watch the video to really get the emotional levels KDOT was taking us through! God Bless you and Your Mother may she be healed expeditiously 🙏🏾
