We’re so lucky for every single role Robin Williams played and left for us to enjoy. He was such a special and gifted human being, I miss him every time I see him on screen. Lovely film to remember him by. RIP Robin❤️

Kurtwood Smith, who played the authoritave overbearing father was asked about DPS and his career, he said he took a male friend to the films premiere who had the same relationship with his son as he had in the movie. The lights went down the film ran the lights went up and his male friend was bawling his eyes out, he saw his relationship played out on the screen and that day vowed to change it. Acting in any form can and does change lives said Kurtwood. Todd Anderson, Ethan Hawke was the part that the writer of the screenplay Tom Sculman says was him at school, the very shy kid who thought himself worthlesss....great inspirational movie...

RIP, Robin Williams. "O Captain, my Captain!"

I remember when the movie came out. Everyone in 1989 who graduated had "Carpe Diem" on their graduation cap. What a message to share and convey. Robin said in interviews that this was one of his favorite roles and its not wonder. Ethan and others mentioned that they could see some of the mental struggles Robin was dealing with even then. So thankful we had Robin for the time we had him. RIP Captain.

Ethan Hawke was on Graham Norton's Show and said that Robin always ad libbed and joked around between takes. He said being so young, he was trying to be serious for his part and it annoyed him, and therefore he thought Robin disliked him. After the movie wrapped, Ethan got a phone call from Robin's agent and said that Robin told him to sign him, stating "this kid's going places". Fast forward all these years and he still has that agent!!!

Neill's father would never understand he was the source of his own son's misery. He couldn't separate Neill from himself; to him, his child was an extension of himself; his property to shape and prune into what he desired. Mr. Perry is a fictional creation, but unfortunately there's a great many people just like him out there.

My little story regarding this film. I attended a school that allowed us to combine our English and History classes together for 9th, 10th and 11th grade. It was called World Culture and World Literature, we learned everything from the very dawn of mankind to the crazy world we live in today. We also dove into every aspect of literature written all over the world. The class is 12 terms of English and 12 Terms of History (3 years of each), it is an EXTREMELY complex course to manage and even more difficult to teach. They keep you with the same instructor, for continuation and communication. My teacher was Mr. Dayton, he had just graduated and we were his first class. He was 24. So- that is the scene, a group of 16 year olds and a 24 year old man who enters the room. Day one he told us NOT to buy any text books, just have a notebook and our minds, he also told us there would NEVER be work outside of the classroom. Day two he required that we watch this film, and take notes. We didn’t understand what we were taking notes on. I still have mine, I was attempting to write down the poetry and lessons that were taught. Silly me. He asked us to keep those notes in the front of the notebook. The rest of the year he opened our minds to the past of early civilizations, and beautiful poetry. The 2nd year started the same exact way, we watched and took, notes. Kept it. We again opened our minds and learned so much. The 3rd year began differently, it was the year we were being tested- no time for films. So we began by looking over old tests, and immediately taking them. We had open discussions regarding these tests, without this year we wouldn’t have passed, and we all got over 85%. He let us know that we would be watching this film and breaking it down as a class, he would be making sure we learned what he had intended we learned over the last few days of year 3. We left with one week left. When we got to class on Monday, the principal was there with a counselor. Mr.Dayton had passed away the Saturday before. They then explained that he had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Leukemia three weeks after starting YEAR ONE, he made the decision to not get treatment and teach us full time instead. "O Captain….My Captain…”-will always connect to Mr. Dayton, as will this film. Some people don’t see the beauty in what he did, but of those 35 kids- 2 have won Grammys, 1 has been nominated for an Oscar, and 3 have been Tony nominated. That is only the super-popular ones. We all keep in contact and agree that none of us would be where we are if he hadn’t stayed and helped us. I just thought I’d share his story, which is SO tragic but EXTREMELY beautiful.

A somewhat forgotten Robin Williams film you might enjoy is The Fisher King, Jeff Bridges is in it too, think it was a Gilliam film too.

This is a really powerful movie, both in its drama and in its humour. It's pretty much the definition of what Terry Pratchett said; that "serious" isn't the opposite of "funny", the opposite of "funny" is "unfunny".

There are teachers and there are educators. The character of Mr Keating was an exemplary example of the latter.

I had a teacher that reminded me of Keating when I was in highschool. Her name was Soledad Villarreal and she taught biology. She had a great impact on me and I decided to study science in college in large part thanks to her. Sadly, she was fired from my school for defending some of her students (who apparently did some bad things and were about to be expelled). I never knew exactly what happened, but I always remember her :)

I’ve used the “seize the day” motto in many speeches I’ve given while serving in the USAF. I tried to instill that attitude in all of my troops. Don’t sit back and let life pass you by, don’t get stationed at a new base and automatically “hate” the area (stateside and overseas). Go out and really find out how it is….even if you don’t speak the local language. You’d be amazed at how awesome those places really are. You’ll end up making great memories and maybe a few lifelong friends along the way. Cheers

I was a young adult when I saw this movie, and it really hit me in the feels. I will never be grateful enough to my mom and dad who gave me values, principles and morals necessary to live in a peaceful and democratic society, but also taught me to think by myself. Thank you folks!

I saw this film when it came out. I was in college and saw it with my friends. We were all sobbing at the end. I called my parents and told them they HAD to see it. ☺️ 3 years later my friend and I were directing a Shakespeare production at a high school. One afternoon after rehearsal one of the math teachers came by and told us that his students who were in the play were raising their hands more in class and seemed more confident overall. It was a great lesson for 2 scared young teachers about why we did what we did. In this day and age, when art is being denigrated, this film is s great reminder of why its so important.

This film has elements from the school I attended. In 1994 our school put this film on the stage. Nanu Nanu can be heard in Mork and Mindy.

Definitely a movie that I can't watch very often, and I have to be in the right head space when I do, but I love it! There's so much in it! You should check out the Robin Williams/ Robert Di Niro movie: Awakening so touching, they are both so good, dramatic roles!! Roberts character is in a coma and Robin tries to come up with a cure to awaken him and others from their comas.

Excellent film that allowed Robin Williams to show both of his talents, as a serious actor and as a comedian. There have been plenty of movies about inspirational teachers, but this is probably the best. I remember John Travolta was in a good one about a music teacher in the 1950s who teaches kids rock music against the wishes of administration and Richard Dreyfus was in the excellent and often overlook Mr. Holland's Opus, but I can't remember any others being anywhere near as good as this.

I see the English high school curriculum doesn't change much across the globe 😂

Robin was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for this role, but didn’t win.

I'll give a little pushback on the statement that Charlie was being an a$$. I think Charlie more than any of the other boys understands the teaching of Robbin Williams. I think he's at a place that is ahead of where the other boys are, so he is more vocal about it. He puts the stuff into practice. I will also say that Mr Keating wasn't perfect. He stopped Charlie from trying to reason with Neil's dad thinking it would make things worse. So, Mr. Keating didn't seize the moment in that instance and it had a lasting effect in Neil's suicide. Not saying Mr. K is to blame, because he's not, but even he made mistakes and I think the film shows a long shot on his face to emphasize that he doesn't know what to do. He had given the speech to Charlie about a time for daring and a time for caution, and a wise man understands which is called for. Imo, Mr. K chose caution over daring in that scene outside the theater when Neil was getting in the car.

Ethan Hawke has done a lot but the trilogy he is in with each film about 10 years apart is unique. Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight are not far everyone but are intriguing.

The school opposite me has the motto, 'Enter to Learn, Learn to Serve' & that is what schools were & are becoming again, factories to produce unthinking workers. If it doesn't add value to the economy or doesn't fit our ideology, it doesn't have a place in education. Free thinking is the essential core of being human as it leads to new ideas & thereby new freedoms & new ways of living. We are not cogs in a machine, we are living souls. Poetry has no place in a machine but is the food that feeds the soul. And free thinking adds new branches to the tree of humanity.
