Love you and amazed at how you jumped right into designing lovely garments right after learning to knit. (Just to share, as a 77 year old, I chuckle almost every time I see almost everyone on RU-vid tucks their sweaters in a bit at the front. As a chubby crone I make sure to knit mine long enough to cover that part of my anatomy!)

Ahhh thank you! I ALWAYS do it and it's turned into a habit. Apparently the Gen Z-ers think it's not cool so I don't think it'll stick around for too long!

I agree. Especially as someone who needs to visually see different color combos. I appreciate different samples and tester photos to help me make my decisions for finished garments.

So much I want to say but you don’t need an essay from me 🤪. You have a remarkable brain, to have produced so many patterns. You’re a lovely young woman. Wear the bright colours. Lose the French tuck, it’s had its day 🤣. Wear the oversized ie too big for you sweaters, on the boat because who cares then if they get smelly or wrecked. Have more self confidence in general because you are mentally brilliant and very beautiful - a true Scottish lass. I’m sure 2024 will be a brilliant year for you. Congrats on all the charity money raised. Such an amazing thing to do. I’m sure your parents are super proud of you. I could be your granny and I think you’re amazing. 🎉🥳🥂🍾🤗🥰🇨🇦 expat 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Oh my goodness Girl, you are amazing. I don’t know you but I’m so very proud of you, as your knitting is so beautiful. I’m 85, been knitting non stop since I was 7. Learned knitting at School in Scotland. Emigrated to Canada at 19 to get married to my Childhood Sweetheart, had 4 kids one Boy 3 girls. For years I tried to get my Girls to knit & Sew, it was a no go, even though I worked in a yarn Shop, also taught knitting at night school. Your Mom is so lucky having you & your amazing Talent.❤, just wish my Girls had done the same. Stay safe Sweetheart, & please keep that Talent going. God Bless You. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️🌹

Thanks for talking about how the yarns held up. It’s such valuable information. Oh and for the too short crop tees you could always wear them over dresses. I wear mine over vest type dresses when I want a bit more coverage.

Great video! I wish I had as many sweaters from 2023 to show - you are amazingly productive! I was disappointed not to see the Leith sweaters included in the ranking - I love all three versions you knit. In that case I think each is so different that they fit your desire to have each serve a different purpose. Thanks for your podcast - I look forward to every episode.

I was VERY torn about the Leith. I made a plain grey one recently and I've worn it non-stop for weeks, and my pastel one was worn all summer! But not sure I've got one that I wear over multiple seasons. If that makes any sense?

I think that makes sense. ( I think you usually make very good sense!) I’m sure there are lots of behind the scenes decisions to make before recording an episode. BTW, in a very small bit of information, the Scottish Yarn Festival was in September. I was there (from the U.S.) on the 9th, but missed you. I did see Amy Palko, and was a total Fan Girl!

This was a great idea to gain some perspective on actually wearing your makes! And also a reminder of all the patterns you made that I told myself I would make 2023 (I guess we will just shift it into 2024, I already have yarn for like four more Tolstas, a Dornie, an Alder and 2 Lanarks) 😂. Your takeaways were very valid especially paying attention to ease in the construction type and also making pieces for the different versions of yourself and even pushing the limits of what you think you like. I’m looking forward to this next year of crafting!

Yes! More black knitting! I will knit your samples in black if you'd like. Aside from you hitting a cord with me on that, thank you for the reflection on what is working for you and what is not. I appreciate it from someone who makes an incredible amount of garments. We don't talk enough about yarn, shape, construction and wear etc.

All I wanted to wear last Summer were my Tolstas. I made 4 for myself and one for my mum, who also loves it. I plan at least 3 more for this summer, so I have one for every day of the week 😅

The totally green sweater looks very pretty! The fabric and fit is amazing for you. And bright colors look also very nice with your hair and skintone. Go for it in 2024! Thank you for tips with fit-ease and why you want to pick a garment more than others.

Yes! Me too. I think both of those have become "template" fits for how I most like drop shoulders and raglan sweaters to fit.

I have loved your appraisal of your knits, Rebecca. My most worn knit is a drops design, top down cardi in Drops Karisma which doesn't particularily suit me, (i am quite busty) but is the most 'me' of all my knits, and i love it. I have top down raglans in brown and rust that suit me better, but it is the Winter Berries i want ❤❤❤

I was watching a new podcaster, called “ChicKnit Chronicles” and she was talking about her 2024 knitting plans. She described your black and white Daft Days as “Chanel” and was very complimentary, to say the least! My “swap-partner” from the #scrappyadventswap2023” is planning to knit the Daft Days with the minis I sent her. It gives me a special feeling to know they’ll be used in such a beautiful garment halfway around the world!

Happy New Year! All your makes are beautiful and suit you, but you're right, tastes do change and you need to try new things. Me on the other hand, am double your age and I have found that I can't wear heavy knit sweaters. I just frogged three sweaters I knit, but never wore because they were too hot. I live in Canada, so it's not the weather. It does come down to comfort. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

It's cool to see a wrap up of all of your patterns and I found your observations about knitting drop-shoulder sweaters with different constructions super helpful (I too struggle with finding the right fit with that style and I always thought it was just a bad combination for my body shape; now I think that maybe not all drop-shoulders are created equal!)Thanks again or the video and to many more beautiful creations in 2024!

thank you for this video! I was thinking about sweater you love everything about except the color you might could have someone over-dye them black then you could have black sweaters, get sweaters off your shelf and not have to knit samples in black 🤷🏼‍♀️

That's a very interesting video! I regularly check my knits, and whatever is not regularly worn gets frogged and "re-knitted" differently (or more realisticly waits to be reknitted for a while, until I have the "right" idea for it). I'm a huge fan of your knit designs 😊 I did indeed notice (at least for my "outside" point of view) that you tend to match very well the yarn and the project. I also think (just my opinion, of course, you do what you like) from seeing this video and seeing you wearing all the knits one after the other, that the one that fits you best (in terms of color) is the brighish orange one from the beginning. No idea why or how, but (in my eyes, again, just my opinion), it makes you look more "lively" in a way, more dynamic, just more cool actually 😉 definitely very cool ;-) One last "fan-girl" thing, I really like how you define the knits you like or don't like that much in terms of "it's me" rather than "it fits me", not sure if I'm making sense, but you clearly nailed it with that definition. And I'm gonna copy you, I'm knitting garnments that "feel me". enough ranting. thanks for the video, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, and thanks for the great designs!

Great highlights Rebecca. I only have a handful of knits thus far but my Big Love cardigan in woolyknit 4ply and drops brushed alpaca silk has been perfect in this winter (I'm a bit further north than you). Turns out I like cardigans so I don't overheat and the pattern/fabric combo is a snuggly hug of a jumper, but light and easy with the more open gauge. I'm about to do a raglan with your recommendation of drops alpaca plus tynn silk mohair then it's your stick season, my drawer is all Aran gauge (one is unspun) so I need some lighter weight additions this year. Hope Hogmanay was a good time and best of luck for 2024.

Thank you for doing this video. It was very informative. As a long time knitter who has never knitted a garment, I found this very helpful. I plan to knit my first garment this year. I have the yarn and pattern. It is actually a jacket type cardigan for my son. If it turns out the way I hope, I will knit one for myself too .

Oh how lucky that your son will get your first garment! I'm sure it'll work out perfectly. The downside is of course that they take longer to knit that accessories, but once you start you can't stop!

Love those tangerine / tomato colors on you! Such an impressive roundup 😊… and I appreciate the mention of the amount raised with the Daft Days patterns, I was waiting to hear about that. Seeing your Dornie cinched the deal for me: I was all set last winter to knit it, then got de-railed by a cardigan pattern which took a very long time. But I’ve just cleared my needles and the Dornie it is! Hope to swatch today 🤞🏻. Happy 2024🎉

Just started watching this episode..Great topic. I have to say something about alpaca and pilling as I'm a spinner of wool and alpaca...it generally has a long staple length not short at all unless it's a commercial blown fibre type where they use the crappy fibres. The reason why it is less likely to pill is that it's a hair structure so doesn't cling and roughen when spun up. It will felt though..just as easily as wool.

I got some spun alpaca from a local farm, one huge amount spun from the mum, and a much smaller quantity from her young daughter. I knit a colourwork cardigan in a fairly open gauge where one of the colours was the mumma alpaca, and the other was worsted Peruvian wool. The alpaca pills like nothing else i've ever knit, but the wool paired it with doesn't at all. The daughters fleece I knit into a shawl and it's not pilled at all. Someone told me it's because baby alpaca pills less. Do you have experience with this? I am so confused!

@ZeallandJanedoze - it may be that the alpaca used in the spun fibre was short so when spun would start to work its way to the surface. Adult alpaca that is well processed to remove short cuts doesn't behave as you describe. I am wearing right now a shawl that I've had for two years now - hand spun by me from an adult male alpaca from a good farm. It is mixed with 25% silk and there isn't a bit of pilling despite the friction from my coats and jumpers. It blooms with time but that's all. As with most fibres, it's the prep not the fibres that cause the problem.

Great recap. I wore my Tolsta (with eyelets) a lot too. It stretched out a bit from so much wear and because of the 50/50 wool/cotton yarn I used, so I plan to try a more winter-y wool or alpaca version with longer sleeves next. Love your sparkly version too.// To expand the wearing season to cooler temps, if you don't mind long sleeve (close fit) turtlenecks or mock neck shirts, you could wear one of those to color coordinate underneath the Corrans to make them wearable longer through Spring and Fall.

Oh I know cotton can do that! I don't think many of mine have stretched but if they have it's not so much that I've noticed. I'm thinking I'll be making a long sleeved one too! DEfinitely think a corran would look cool with a turtleneck! I have a few in my wardrobe so might try styling it that way soon.

Thank you for showing all of your beautiful garments, I don’t know how you knit so many, it takes me 2 to 3 months just one sweater! I wear my Warmup sweater by Petite Knits the most; unfortunately the yarn-7th Floor Yarns-pills a lot. My latest FO-the Downtown Hoodie by Tori Yu I wear constantly. Made a thick cowl instead of a hoodie. @DrJoyceKnits

So I knit myself a few too many short sleeve wool sweaters, mostly because I got lazy about sleeve knitting a few years ago 🙈😂 however I’ve since found I love wearing them as an Autumn/Spring item over a slim fitted long sleeve top or turtleneck. I’ll quite often wear the short sleeve sweater inside, then swap it for a long sleeve one when I go outside, not sure if that’s an option that might work for you 😊

Maybe the orange sample of the Cargill needs to live on the boat. That color reminds me of a fisherman's rain jacket or coveralls.

Love the roundup! My thoughts on using some of your tolstas: I would wear the wooly tolsta under a sweater in winter since I usually wear undershirts anyway with sweaters. And I would wear the cropped tolstas on the boat over my swimsuit when I want to cover up!

I am literally always cold so I think I'm going to try wearing the wooly tolsta tomorrow instead of my usual tshirt and see how it goes! So far there hasn't been anything remotely like swimsuit weather since we bought the boat, btu maybe if I keep them cropped it will be a good luck charm for some warmer days this summer!

Rebecca you are just awesome! You are so genuine, and you always crack me up. I love how you evaluate your knits in terms of how much of a "cool girl" they make you feel. I need to follow your thinking and tell myself "this garment doesn't feel like me" instead of thinking it's "unflattering". You've got me thinking about which of my own knits i love the most, and it's convinced me to try knitting my Daft Days cardigan as a V instead of a round neck. Do you have any tips? I've sort of winged this change once before, and I ended up having to do some rapid adjustments so the v didn't wind up at my belly button 😅

Yesss I think when I say "cool girl" I mean, "I feel like the most 'me' version of myself right now" and those garments always make me feel amazing! It's funny how they vary from being some of my most oversized knits to some of my cropped tees, it's just something in the air! You could completely knit the daft days as a v neck, you just need to work out how many decreases you need at the neck edge to get down to the shoulder stitch could for your size, then evenly decrease those along the neck. Daft Days is knit bottom-up, so no worries about navel-depth Vs! Hypothetical numbers: you have 50 stitches on the front left, the left shoulder ends up with 30 stitches, you need to decrease 20 stitches. If the front panel is meant to measure 20 stitches, decrease 1 stitch at the neckline every cm. Hope that helps!

My most worn things are my Zweig and my Achikochi, both made in biches and buches petite lambswool. It’s a beautiful woollen spun wool, very light but very warm. Happy new year Rebecca and thanks for your podcast

I used the Biches and Buches gros lambswool this year and I was not a fan, but I also used their gros mohair and LOVED it! They send a huge shade card with my last order of the petit and some colours are beautiful so I might be tempted!

Thank you so much for sharing your measurements and thoughts on ease. We have similar bust size so it’s been really hard for me to CO a drop shoulder - I’ve been watching them but I feel like the Stockholm would look awful on me and I wouldn’t wear it. Your Stick Season looked amazing on you and it’s been added to my queue. I also really appreciated how you talked out having multiples and how they have to have a different vibe. I’m a goth girly *rather than granola girl* but it’s good to have the Corporate Wednesday Addams vibe when necessary - I was thinking about your rainbow sweater and if I would like it if there was black instead of beige. 😂 Probably taking it a bit too far.

Great review of all of your sweaters! As a cool winter too, I know that I can get away with wearing colors like beige or brown by wearing a brightly colored top underneath.

I love your woolly sweaters, but I am most excited about the Tolsta Tee because I live in Texas and it's hot 9+ months of the year here. I love tees with fibers like cotton, ramie, linen, bamboo, silk, etc.

I am also a winter. I find that black works, while beige-yellow-cream make me look like a corpse. So I look for saturated colors that don’t have muddy or grey undertones. And NO yellow. Sad because it may well be my favorite color.

Yes! It's tricky because I love so many of those colours but then every time I see how much brighter my skin looks in those saturated colours I'm a little more convinced.

Actually there are many yellow shades suitable for winters, but they have be cool toned for true winter (lemon yellow). Bright and dark winters can stand more mustardy tones. The most problematic color for winters is orange because it does not have a cool toned version. I believe that bright winters are able to wear bright orange shades (almost red), but cool and dark winters are not.

I wear my tees the most for sure, but I am not certain any one gets more wear than the others. There are a few I never wear (because I don't like the fit) but for the most part I love them all.

My red Tolsta Tee is my most worn knit, I made it in a cotton/wool blend, which is great for Pacific Northwest weather. Right now I am knitting a Daft Days cardigan, which I am finding relaxing to knit. You mentioned that you didn’t care as much for the Knitting for Olive mohair. I just ordered some and the reason is, that they wait for the moths to hatch and then gather their cocoons for the silk they use. I don’t know if any other manufacturers follow this practice? Happy New Year🎉

I love drops Alpaca too! It’s so drapey, warm and smooth, and the mixes have the best colors. I did a sweater with Alpaca and Drops Kidsilk - do not recommend the Drops Kidsilk. It’s pretty but it’s not next-to-skin soft and it’s way too fuzzy for my taste. A Drops Alapava sweater alone is way better. I’m dying to dry the Sadness Garnes tinsilk one day!

So many messages about Leith! I wore my rainbow version all summer, but haven't reached for it much since it got colder, but have been wearing my non-striped one almost every week since i finished it. It felt like neither of them quite knocked the others off of the "top" spots.

Thanks for a wonderful re-cap on your beautiful knits! You may have answered this already, but what is the reference point for your favorite knit length. I know you say 25 cms. Given everyone has a different torso length, how does this measurement compare , to say from your armpit to hip or armpit to belly button?

I usually knit to 35cm from the underarm. I've just learned over time what I like. I think the best method is to find a sweater you love and take the measurements from that, then use it as a reference for future knits

Hey! So firstly, it's definitely about budget and what people can afford. I think the only things I spend disposable income on are the gym and yarn. Secondly, quite a few of the yarns, particularly the pricier ones, were sent for me to design with. The Explorer Knits (Stick Season), Bare Naked Wools (Lanark) and Sonder Yarn (Alder) were all provided at no cost to me. That being said, a lot of these are actually in affordable yarns. Most of the Tolstas, both Corrans, the Semper and the white Dornie sweater are all less than $50 worth of yarn. In fact quite a few of the Tolstas I made this year were with 1 cone of Wooly Knit cotton than costs £15 (About $20 I think?) So yes, some of these are definitely pricier projects, but not all of them! And whilst I do like to indulge in new and interesting yarn, I usually try to make sure there's a balance. (Thanks for this comment! Made me really think about it!)

Oh no😮 not the stupid French tuck! Looks like you forgot to check your clothing after visiting the bathroom 😂 It also makes the person look heavier. I'm a not a thin person and so i don't need to draw attention lower abdomen. That being said you sweaters are beautiful 😍

The info about alpaca not pilling is simply wrong! Apart from very soft and loosely spun merino alpaca is probably the most pilling yarn AT ALL. Just looking at it gets these bobbles going! And it felts like there’s no tomorrow… all my alpaca garments do that like crazy. Mohair doesn’t, Blueface Leicester doesn’t, silk doesn’t, Wensleydale doesn’t, high twists do not so much. So these are go tos for a black, much worn piece!

My info about the staple length is wrong, someone's corrected me below. But my alpaca and mohair sweaters have pilled significanlty less than my wool and mohair ones.
