I am so happy that you talked about the “are you mixed” 😒😞😔 The darker you are the shorter your hair is supposed to be. Funny so once you get rid of the chemicals, over manipulating the hair strands, and over stressing the hair follicles the hair grows and gets thicker and becomes healthy. You start to stand out in some places because they have categorized black with weaves and wigs only. Kind of sad that I had to learn my natural hair in my late 30’s. Great and informative video.

Yes ma’am, so many black women are sacred to go natural but the ironic thing is when you do go natural and do it correctly your hair will be healthier and longer than it was when it was relaxed. Yes, I get the question all the time and then when I say I’m black you want to ask am I sure ? 😒

Your mom is beautiful for telling you that at a young age. My mother said my hair was difficult and irritated her. My hair was permed from age five till my late twenties. I still struggle with it and my self image to this day. Her words unknowingly made me feel like something was wrong with me because of my hair. Never tell your child that their hair irritates you and is difficult. Be very careful what you say about your child's hair. Its powerful.

Hey Nina lol ! Yes it is! Actually words have a huge impact on us as humans more than we like to let on, especially as a child and from a parent. My mother wanted me to know from day one that I was beautiful just the way I was; as you know it wasn’t her that relaxed my hair but she put in her big girl panties and dealt with it. Especially in the black community hair is a VERY sensitive subject. If my story can help some one I am glad to share it. I know you are beautiful with your hair natural or relaxed, I can’t see you lol but know from queen to another you are beautiful as you are !

My sister tried to convince me to see her stylist and was really trying to push me as if I was complaining about doing my hair. I told her that I am the master of my own hair. My wash day is simplified and it is therapeutic. Plus it’s so easy to just be. Some say it’s just hair but it’s an extension of you. You find time to take care of your physical and mental health. Plus our beauty has been tied in with our hair in such a negative manner that i like seeing our women with glorious natural hair. This is what our daughter and sons need to see. So many women and men just look at my hair in awe because they are not used to seeing us being natural and beautiful at the same time.

Yes ma’am! Say it again! We are a beautiful people. Our young people need to see themselves in the media and in every facet of their life with the hair that they were blessed with. We don’t need to conform to another people’s standard of beauty.

I was born in Jamaican and came here when I was 9. It's common for Jamaican kids to be natural either all the way up until they graduate high school or sometime during high school. Sometimes never at all. When I first got here, all everyone kept asking was when I would relax my hair. Shortly after, my dad made my sister and I get a relaxer. My mom (still living in Jamaica) was livid. It's just wasn't a think that was popular in our culture. Relaxed hair was seen as more of an adult hairstyle.

Hello. I just came upon your videos and I am enjoying them. Thank you for sharing your hair journey. I started my natural journey in 2005. It was time for a relaxer touch up, but I call looking in the mirror and seeing the new growth and feeling how strong the new growth felt. At that moment I said, no more relaxers. I have no regrets going natural. It does take time to understand your hair and what works with it, but I am not going back. I have had set backs, but I love my hair. For those of you thinking of going natural give yourself patience and in time you will see the reward.

I like your humility. Thank you for sharing your step by step hair journey. I came upon your videos 1-2 weeks ago. I love both fashion and hair. My hair is relaxed at the moment and has been for years. I am considering going natural without the BC. Would you list the products that you are using now on your hair.

Why so many older women want to interfere with young girls hair? People wonder why so many women today struggle with accepting their hair when the older generation would sneak and put chemicals in children hair.
@KlassicallyKept
@KlassicallyKept 3 года назад
Exactly. My mother told her not to touch my hair and then she waits until my mother goes out of town to do it, complete disrespect . And me not knowing , I thought that was how my hair was supposed to be. Sometimes older generations put things things on their children and the younger generation because that is all they know, and then when we have different views or a different way to approach situations its looked at as rebelling or unacceptable .

My relaxed hair never passed my shoulders either. My parents are also Jamaican with a bit of Native American-Indian from my grandmother's side. I also went natural at the again of 19. Girl being natural is not lazy. It's a lot of work but after awhile it gets easier. I transitioned for 11 months before doing the big chop. I'm now currently APL/BSL. I also wore mini throughout my whole college years. After graduation I didn't do mini twist again until a year later. I prefer mini/medium flat twists rather than mini twists. I also haven't been to the hair salon for the past 7 years. I don't trust ANYONE to do my hair. I do everything myself and also straighten my hair as well. Protective Styling has been a life saver for me. Especially having a busy work life. And making sure to refresh and moisturize on a weekly basis.
@KlassicallyKept
@KlassicallyKept 3 года назад
OMG, we are hair sisters and Jamaican sisters lol. Yes! there is nothing lazy about being natural. I agree once you get into the swing of things taking care of your hair is like second nature. Now as far as someone else doing my own hair I had a terrible experience in 2014 that made me learn how to do my own hair. I got married over the weekend and that was the first time since 2014 that anyone else has done my hair, my wedding planner vetted her and I watched her do someone's natural hair, some of these hair stylist claim they can "do" natural hair and really they just want your money. If I could do flat twists I would definitely try them, mine always come out looking crazy. I couldn't do the big chop either, to me when I cut of my dead ends , I felt my hair was short, it came right past my shoulders. Protective styling has saved my hair and has allowed me to retain my length and here recently I am loving headwraps, I just feel so royal when I wear one. I have a busy work life as well. Are we family lol ?

I would never get a relaxer either, the pain from burns, the unimaginable dryness, the constant breaking, and I personally don’t see straight hair as attractive on me. My 4c tough hair stresses me out so much and never enough for a relaxer❤️
@KlassicallyKept

I completely understand where you are coming from. I will never get a relaxer again but that does not mean that my natural hair does not test me, there are days when I say OMG , just cut it all off! As you heard in the story it was not my decision, nor did my mother relax my hair, I do think about how my hair would be today , if it were never relaxed, but I make sure that I am still grateful for where I am in my hair journey today.

Hello Meme! Yes , I was younger and didn't want to speak up, but had that been now I would've definitely spoken up sooner, I could hear my hair snapping. This is the reason I started learning how to straighten my own hair. I know sometimes we don't like to speak up and the hair dresser is the professional , but it's my hair, my money, and my comfort level.

Hello from abroad! Yes lol he does. For him he grew up with 6 sisters and all of them had long straight relaxed hair, so that was normal to him and really the only way he thought women should wear their hair. I think his issue was how it was going to look and the fact that my mother was already natural he thought I was going into my rebellion phase, plus I was in college so he thought I was trying to find myself lol . I’ve had so many set backs even since returning to natural but that’s because I stopped doing what I KNOW works for me and that is a simple hair care regimen. The more I over complicate the process the more likely I am of not doing my hair at all. Which has lead to my hair drying out and breaking off. My hair isn’t really short but it definitely doesn’t look like six years of growth. But I’m going back to basics moisturizing my hair and keeping it stretched in twists
@KlassicallyKept
@KlassicallyKept 3 года назад
@@nigerianhurr90 I have found that as well. When I am doing my hair everyday and trying to complicate things and add so many things to my hair care regime I can notice the difference in my hair. Your look is giving me royalty vibes. Either way queen you have a really nice classy channel

Hello Lady Diaspora, Thank you! Yes you are absolutely correct in regards to me not being 100% African, my father's grandmother was white. She showed up to one of our family reunions one year and I was confused lol. My statement was more so trying to get people to understand that women who identify as black or women who have two black parents ( brown skin ) can have long beautiful hair as well without being "mixed".
