What matters is that you spoke up and you didn’t silence yourself. It’s not Anticlimactic. It would eat you up inside if you didn’t say anything, you would be at turmoil. This is where you lay your head to rest and reset both physically and mentally.

With people like Signora Milanese, the best thing you could do is casually dropping the fact that you are a Bocconi graduate, it's sad but they will see you as part of that institution and treat you better. I am experiencing the same thing living in Paris as an Italian, of course I don't have to deal with that type of racism but Parisians can be very suspicious and rude to Italians. However, when I say I go to a certain school, they immediately change their attitude.

You're actually far more tolerant and charitable than I am on this issue. For me, a person can phone the police if they witness a crime either as onlooker or victim. That's it. I don't think "being scared" is a valid reason to phone the police. Society needs to heavily stigmatise these amateur detectives whose (often bigotry-laden) imaginations lead them to merely "suspect" innocent people of criminality. Suspicion, fear, paranoia, cowardice, these are not valid reasons to phone the police. You did great to nip things in the bud by confronting these neighbours at the earliest opportunity. Absolutely the correct response.

Being a "sciura milanese" myself, I would not be surprised if the 2 elderly ladies were much nicer to you from now onwards. We normally tend to be a bit frosty in the beginning, but we also usually warm up to younger neighbours in the long run and you're super nice, so it shouldn't be a problem. Or at least that's my hope. If somebody fumbled with my door handle I would be pretty anxious, too... but calling the police? Boh... unbelievable.

How to remove scotch residue : use another piece of cut scotch and stick it onto the residue and pull off, like you would with waxing strips until it’s come off. I learnt this from a job were we needed to get some tape residue off some stones etc and my manager showed me how to do it with more tape. And it works. Hopefully that helps.

Ciao Tia!! i always enjoy your videos. my italian wife usually handles situations like this. we had to listen to our downstairs neighbors fighting on a daily basis when we were still living in Verbania. i would try to ignore the fighting but when i heard the physical pushing and screams i asked my wife to call the Carabinieri. it sounded like a woman was being hurt and that's an alarming sound. we are down south now(finally and loving it! Woo!) just a little south of Formia proper. we've met our neighbors a couple of months ago. they're a mid 40's boyfriend/girlfriend pair. lately, we've been hearing them argueing and fighting at night. sometimes for hours and hearing furniture being shoved around. its unsettling at times. i told my wife to please not call the police and for us to not get involved because we don't need them taking issue against us. we are a mixed race couple too, but so far we haven't had any serious problem of how we are viewed in public. its still a blessing to live in Italy for me. Grazie...

I am happy that everything has worked out well. Based on the fact that those students are not from Milan, I am under the impression they grew up in a place where it is not common to see people of different origins like it is in a big city like Milan, so when they saw an unknown black person knocking on their door they were scared and immediately called the police. It is prejudice and there's a lot of work which still needs to be done to overcome it. If we want to see the glass half full, they learned a lesson, they became better people and won't do it anymore.

Assuming that certain parts of the society will be more understanding (the couple you referred to), is just that (an assumption). My brother years ago went to help a blind guy, he heard his accent and told him to go back to his country. Who you choose to have a relationship with or sleep with is very different from being born a particular race. The only people who can really understand the calling the police situation is most likely another black person. Also while I think it is important to introduce yourself to your neighbours, do not feel you have to tell your neighbours your business or explain yourself to them. If they have problem with you (being black), there is nothing you will be able to do to change that and that is their problem. While you cannot choose who you fall in love with, you can choose where you live. I personally as a black person can never live in a neighbourhood where I am the only black person for days (that's me).

The old lady called the police on us too. When we bought our house, we found out she’d be in our garden whenever she wanted without even saying hello or responding to any question. She has never responded even to my kids, when they were 2 and 5, very little. We found this old lady in our garden, using our little fountain without asking for our permission or responding to us. So, one day we managed to speak to her daughter, who is my age, and told her that this was going on. She said that our garden was also theirs because they had always used it when the house was empty. We spoke to the lawyer and obviously my neighbour didn’t have any right on our garden, so we informed the daughter. From that moment she got mad at us. The old lady came to us the following day saying that she had always used our garden so we had bought the house with her as well. So we put a fence. They went to a lawyer, we received a letter and basically they wanted to go on a trial. They put rumours on use and even their children got nasty to my kids. These old ladies are rubbish and they raise rubbish people. Btw, if I were you, I’d inform about your nationality. A lot of old people are afraid of people from other countries (even of us from another region…), so inform them you are from USA. That way they know you have a western culture, you don’t cook “smelly food”, that you don’t have different religious habits, that you are from a regular family and didn’t marry Enrico for money or just to have the Italian citizenship. It’s more a cultural fear… Good luck. Be patient, these ladies won’t die before they are 100.

I was just thinking that if the neighbors, who called the cops, have recently moved from a small southern rural area to a big northern city they might be feeling threatened in general. I know that from a calm and rational point of view they should have come and spoken with you first but fear can mess up your reasoning. On the other hand they may have come from a crime ridden area and may have their own triggers especially if they've experienced a burglary in the past. Perhaps it's just the reputation of big cities that has them worried that they could be potential targets (young and far from home). Italians tend to live with family a lot longer and are not used to being independent at a young age. Perhaps this is their first time alone and far from a supportive network of family and close friends. Anyway, it sounds like you managed to put them at ease and that there won't be any further issues. There's nothing worse that condominium wars among neighbors. Nobody needs it although, if you're renting you can (in theory) just move. Whereas if you own, especially after investing so much in your new home, it's not so simple.

We are a young white italian couple and we met a "signora Milanese" (only we live in Brescia) ...I noticed she was always looking at us come and go or trying to steal look inside the apartment while we were working on it. I "casually" mentioned that I work in the city hall....let's just say she changed attitude...like, they added us on the Group chat, even if we are actually renting the place. Old italians are a piece of work, they will respect you only if they think they can take advantage of you, add on top of that the interiorized racism..and voilà xD

My two cents on what happened...I could be wrong, but I think the young brother and sister realised someone was trying to get in in their apartment without previously knocking on the door or ringing the bell, they see a person trying to get in, they get scared and they call the police; then they realise she's not there anymore, they go outside and they see you with the alleged robber drinking wine, they realise they screw up badly and instead of acting in an adult and mature way, meaning calling again 112 for saying it was a mistake and confronting you, they panic and they decide to play dumb. In my opinion it was an exaggeration to call the police in the first place and obviously it was a disaster how they handled the situation, but I don't think it was racism, they would have probably called the police even if they would have seen a white person, it's just a mix of paranoia, immaturity and cowardice.
