My evening 'glimmer moment', as I like to call it, is having a shower in the light of my favourite eucalyptus candle. I draw a heart in the steamed up shower door and watch the flickering heart-shaped light dance on the wall as I wash the day off my skin. So peaceful and calming ❤
I love all of this, and that you are generous enough to share with us! The two hours of reading feels/sounds so luxurious but I appreciate that it is part of your career and you are *making* time for it. But I do wonder how you fit all the everyday stuff in your new routine - the things you said you used to work on all the way until dinner (laundry, grocery shopping, house things, lingering work items). On a related note, a more detailed video about your reading habit would be wonderful!
I live by the coast in Newcastle so I love sitting in my vintage rocker reading with a coffee and looking out to the sea. And meandering walks with no destination! I also love to cook with great music playing. Ps - Would love a video about your reading habits or an overview of your library xx
I listen to Gregorian chant at night while reading before bed. It seems to always do the trick. I also find sleeping with the bedroom window open really adds to the quality of my sleep. Just found your channel and have subscribed :)
I just want to thank you for being you, Jenny. I am very different than the people around me and sometimes I feel that I must be the only one like me in the world. Then I tune in to one of your videos and you talk about yourself and I am reminded that my quirks are also Jenny’s quirks and since Jenny is ultra loveable, then I must be loveable, too. Thank you especially today for an extra big boost. (It turns out that we even eat the same. That was an amazing and welcome surprise!). I appreciate you so much! 💜
I feel the same way - especially listening to Jenny and David's podcast. It can be difficult to find like-minded people, and when you find them you want to hold on tight!
I love your routine videos. I have a job that makes setting a routine almost impossible but even watching yours calms me down 😌 pls keep them coming 🤍 And I’d like to see a reading habits video too 🫶🏻
Keep the phone out of reach at bedtime (I try to keep it out of the room entirely) and get back into evening reading by starting with something super easy + visually appealing. When I’m too tired to focus, I’ll look at something like Field Guide to Everyday Magic (magazine, Stampington) or some kind of book on design or art. Something beautiful with lots of pictures should be in your stack.
If you've had renovations done and used MDF that could be irritating your skin. I think on a previous video the steps around the patio looked like they were made from a lot of MDF/ plywood, if I'm right? We had the same issue, builders decided to saw inside and we had to clean or wash EVERYTHING. I was itching like crazy, my hands started to crack, and my face broke out. It sticks around for ages and we had to keep the windows open for weeks. Thinking of getting an air purifier to get rid of the last of the microparticles/ formaldehyde, since it it bad for your lungs too. Might be worth a deep clean and a good air out!
My three favourite evening things are: 1. Opera showers. Put on an opera playlist, dimmed light in the bathroom (no need to see every inch of my body, it's more about relaxation) and listen or sing along while showering. When you use a live performance recording you even get applause for showering. Amazing! 2. A luxury: setting a fixed bed time. I'm in bed at midnight. First I was awake for 2 more hours, but now my body accepted the time and I'm asleep much quicker (coming from depression schedule, going to bed at 6am) 3. Orange bedroom light bulbs. It's way better than even normal warm white bulbs. The orange light makes me very sleepy 😊
I would recommend listening to an audio book before bed instead, easy to still be relaxed and doesn’t matter if you fall asleep, but doesn’t keep you awake in the same way that your phone down 😊
the routine sound so calming and nourishing. I love that all the senses were paid attention to and the daily little magical moments like reading for fun were mentioned. I feel sorry but I have to mention that the insomnia might be related to the earl grey (it does contain coffein) and the raw food in the evening since the body needs more time to digest which can cause sleeping issues
Maybe you're sensitive to caffeine lately? If the base of your Earl Grey tea is black tea, the caffeine in it may affect your sleep. And also coffee you drank during the day, of course. I haven't been able to drink coffee after 3pm for a few years now because it makes me have a much more disturbed sleep. It didn't used to be a problem.
I've had a caffeine curfew of 2pm for a number of years now (I may have a cup of green tea in the early evening if I'm going out at night and need a little boost, but that's it, I guess I'm quite sensitive!). It has really helped me get to sleep when I want to.
Same. I love the taste of Earl Gray, black tea, green tea, but I limit them in the evenings, otherwise I'll most likely have trouble sleeping. But there are wonderful caffeine-free teas as well, such as peppermint
Love your videos! Would love a updated evening routine down the line. Can’t wait to see your updated flat! I would love to hear more about your writing routine and inspiration!
I love ❤ your videos about your routines and healthy habits. They feel super soothing. I'm also in the club of the 3am-eyes-wide-open 😢 in the middle of moving countries and jobs... 😬
Just finished a 3 month kitchen redo, and all the floors replaced in home. Its harder than building a home, which I have done. I was so stressed, my dog was stressed, my husband also. I can totally relate.
This vid was worth the wait! So excited for second novel draft Jenny you’re such a rockstar! For myself I’m getting back into pen pal mail with my aunt and friends back home. It’s been a fun way to stay in touch but make it special by sending sticker goodies, doodles, or a bag of tea each others way. ❤
I really enjoyed the video as always ❤ about your sleep disturbance, have you considered cutting out the caffeine intake in the afternoon? You mentioned that you drink black tea after dinner. It has been proven that caffeine strongly contributes to lower quality of sleep. Just a tip you may consider!
I used to watch you like 10 years ago sporadically but just found your name again in one of my old books.. so I decided to check what life has gone like for you and wow! Your video is so aesthetically pleasing, and you’re an author! ❤
Never miss your podcast! Ever! Your podcast makes me smile. You mentioned that you make your sparkling water. How do you do that? I'd love to try it. Your new flat is beautiful and spacious. Worth the work. I can't wait to read your book.
Love this. Totally agree with the essential of aesthetic. And, I totally agree with the beauty of fluidity - love that you change your routine as if it's the core of human nature ('cause it is). Love love. Yes to reading Vlog and yes to some of your Spotify playlists xx
I mixed ginger kombucha with a little bit of ginger shot (the concentrated one for when you're ill) and it elevated the ginger flavour and gave it an extra kick! So tasty! 🙌
We’re almost done with our renovations as well. Biggest stress I’ve ever had and our sleep is all over the place. Your home will be done soon and gorgeous. 😌
I too find it impossible to read before bed, so I watch a gardening or recipe video to get my head out of the day, and into something relaxing. if I get into a 'wake up at 2' routine, it's difficult to break, so I will use magnesium spray before going to bed.
what i want to read: Okay Days :) (only a few weeks until it will be finally shipped) what i'm currently reading: Secret History by Donna Tartt (it's the usual yearly re-read) and The Push by Ashley Audrain my tiny every day happinesses: a piece of dark chocolate with a cold lime water or a home-made nice cream, candle light and a good book or a short tv show epi Jenny, i've never thought that placing the books on a shelf like in your writing study, would work. but it's such a vibe. I might need to do it in my living room. it would be more neutral and somehow better looking than the usual pinterest backwards placed bookshelves. I know you're on a busy schedule but could you please continue the series: how to write and publish a book? it would be very useful for the summer. What app do you use on your mac, how to let go of the process that it'll never be perfect, etc. just anything from you would be very helpful. Your skin could be a result of your stress and sleepless nights. Or a sign of a tiny hormonal imbalance or just as simple as a water quality (hard or soft water on the skin makes a huge difference). Unfortunately, i don't find any good kombucha in Berlin. There are 2-3 brands, both are loaded with sugar and the taste is off... i'm always on a hunt but nothing new can be found...
@@THEMUSTARDS it would be a pleasure and a honour! 💛 And btw: Your reading vlogs are so incredible. So pertinent, subtle, original. Rare on RU-vid :) keep doing this!
Thank you for this video Jenny! I’ve just moved in after a renovation and I totally get what you’re saying here. Hopefully this kind of stress will be over for us both soon
Enjoyed this video. I've been a problem sleeper for 20 yrs but finally settling down. Not sure what the trick is, I know I sleep better in the winter when the temperature is cold and I really lower the heat in the evening. Would love a book video. Thanks Jenny!!
Just finished “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus! Fantastic read & highly recommend reading prior to new series by same name coming this fall to Apple TV
I love how you say your facial items are "so divine, I kinda want to eat it." hehehe. I actually fall asleep when I read before bed. It makes me sleepy just getting a few pages in. I read A LOT in general, but before bed, it does something to me. It is weird. It wasn't always that way either. As long as my room is cool enough and I go to bed early enough (I wake very early), I have no problems sleeping. If I am too hot, I can't sleep well at all. I sweat. I feel badly for people who have actual sleeping problems. I just really find that many people don't have a set schedule for their sleep, and I think that actually really sets a habit and is healthy for them.
Love all of this! And how you have so beautifully shown your struggles with stress but still made it into a positive uplifting video! I watch your videos to calm down because they are always so beautiful, aesthetic and calming :) wishing you luck with your new routine!
Have you considered making your own kombucha? I love "booch" and started making it years ago, it's easier than I thought and it does taste "stronger" as most store bought kombucha is diluted with something. I prefer mine to any store bought kombucha, especially since I can flavour it anyway I please and make it as sour or not as I please. Ginger is my fave flavour as well.
One of my tiny everyday happinesses was actually inspired by your cutlery set :) I invested in buying some of the original Arne Jacobsen for Anton Michelsen cutlery, made in Denmark. They are so nice to use, a fantastic investment that will only gain value over time plus I can enjoy them forever! x
Yes I just finished season 2 of Somebody Somewhere, it's really wonderful, sad and funny and I'm also trying all the suggestions for good sleep, sometimes nothing works and I just have to have a lot of caffeine to get through work...ps love your videos
Nice to see Elaine Feeney in your stack! I just discovered her in the Paris Review while in Ireland and just finished reading her first novel. Thanks for the recs!
Love everything that you do Jenny. Congratulations. My way to deal with stress after a long day is through silence. Is it meditation? I’m unsure, but I recharge a little by absolute silence and breathing.
Agatha Christie murder mysteries before bed are great light reads that are still well-written. I usually drop off before I’ve finished a chapter 😂 Do you have any more relaxing classical music recommendations?
Reading before bed wakes me up. I banned it like 15 years ago, but it means i dont read much for fun anymore :(. I still try it occasionally and it causes massive insomnia because brain is AWAKE after reading.
Morning Routine: 5:45 am Get up, put on exercise gear and do a 20 minute pilates, arm weights and stretching routine. Go for an up the volcano down and around 20 minute walk. Cook breakfast and make a packed lunch. Climb back into bed for relaxation and calming time: 30 minutes Breakfast in bed with bible reading, followed by have a wash and 20 minutes makeup routine. 10 minutes get dressed and off to work at 8 am. Night Routine: Make a healthy home cooked dinner from scratch. Hubby does the dishes. Get into comfy clothes, check that tomorrows outfit is ready, then catch up on all my favourite you-tubers in the comfort of my cosy bed until I fall asleep. Sometimes I read books as an alternative but only if they are particularly interesting! Every Sunday I plan a menu for the coming week. I order the food online and my husband collects it. I love my routines so much that I usually prefer staying home over going out at night. This is post raising a family though! Not possible with young children!
I had a lot of insomnia during the pandemic lock downs which I believe was mainly due to not working enough during the day to tire me out and falling off the wagon with daily routines. I don't listen to people who say you shouldn't look at screens before bed. It puts me to sleep and I don't see a screen much during my job.
My version of perfect night routine is: warm shower, gently strech only with candle or salt lamps light, read in bed, meditate and pass out :D And I keep my fingers crossed for this dream routine to stick out for You! Also, speaking of Vivaldi's Four seasons i HIGHLY recommend Sinkovsky's version.. my God, it is the most beautiful and intense.
This is just a guess but maybe Kevita is a company that is not in the UK and they find the new rules for importing to the UK impossible. My company can't ship to UK because we are supposed to collect tax and pay the crown, even tho we are a tiny US small business!
A reading blog would be great. It’s always hard for me to find good books that I adore. I‘m demisex, nearly all good writers focus on love and relationships and I can’t relate or be interested in these books. So i‘m always looking for more recommendations and variety
I see we have Kevita Kombucha in Texas, so I may try it. :D But they are only selling pineapple peach. Do you recommend that one, or which ones do you like more?
Great video! I just checked out the Richter version of Vivaldi's Fours Seasons, which I have long loved. Gorgeous, thanks for the recommendation, and I can even read to it! (I'm reading The Book of Ichigo Ichie.)
thx just about to start “somebody somewhere”! I just watched a great 6 part series “the dreamer-becoming Karen Blixen” about her life writing and trying to get published after Africa. Beautifully done
Will your book ever be translated into german? It's not like I could not read it, but I am to lazy for english and it takes so long 😅 I have so many english books but never finished them.
