Just a guy from Arkansas chasing his dreams of traveling the world, meeting amazing people, and trying all the delicious food I can find!

Aween is very well informed and she did a very good job explaining our culture to you. This is very important as ive seen many travel vloggers came to Malaysia and they were wrongly informed about many things. Sometime they (the guides) didnt even know the name of the food theyre feeding these vloggers and thats pretty embarassing. Well done Kakak Aween! And sick drone shots bro!

Max's energy shows a respect for his subject matter - food, culture...I'm put off by other food vloggers who seem to be about self promotion first. Some are not even that adventurous the way Max is. Max is among the best.

What a lovely family. You certainly have surrounded yourself with quality friends. As a single mother, I applaud how the women are protected by laws. Also, as a Native American, ( Cherokee) I'm proud that our culture also had similar provisions for women. In the medical field, I had the privilege of working with female Malaysian physicians. They were certainly 2nd to none. Thank you so much for not only sharing your friends with us but also educating us in the process.

@@rangeswarichellam4817 perhaps you should learn that the median of all the races of the malaysian population (be it the chinese, indians, malay, borneans, and the asals) are not as what you've described. just like the lady mentioned in this video, there are extremes in every statistic, and the extremes tend to drown out the voices of the silent moderates. but i do agree we can't move forward if we can't respect each other. happy chinese new year :)

@Santos Lewynn there is some truth in your statement. "first world infrastructure, 3rd world mentality" was the statement one of our prime ministers used to describe us malaysians. But hey we aren't perfect.and im betting every nation has their own flaws. We will improve in time. Are the mainland chinese lower status? sorry it doesn't resonate with my experience. i have plenty of mainland AND malaysian chinese friends who are definitely 'higher status' than me. With regards to the jews, it's unfortunate. Malaysia has no diplomatic ties with Israel. that's just too political for me.

I visit Malaysia Twice a Year. I love the Food because its Fushion. They create the best flavours together. Like Nasi Beriyani its a typical Fushion dish. I think you will love Surinamese food too. Its like Malaysian also very Fushion with food from Jawa, Indian, Chinese, Portugese, Creole, Dutch. So much flavours and spices. Malaysia is a lovely country! Malaysian foods are da best in the world, any time any day..I can be anywhere in the world (I used to lived in US, Japan, Saudi Arabia, been to Thailand, Canada, Singapore) but still will always miss Malaysian foods, I even cooked my own Malaysian foods overseas and made do with whatever limited ingredients I had to endure!! Give a bunch of grass to Malaysians, and I bet they'll turn it into a mighty delicious dish! Btw, I am Malay Malaysian originally from Kedah. Sorry for masuk lift tekan sendiri (sorry if my comments are biased in favor of my own country)..but I tell you, Malaysian foods are really delicious..

I guess Aween is a Minangkabau people since she mentioned that Adat Perpatih is practiced in her family. In case you don't know, Minangkabau is one of very few matrilineal societies (and the largest one!) in the world which still alive until today, and that explained why the properties of family are inherited by women. Negeri Sembilan has the largest number of Minangkabaus outside of their ancestral homeland in Western Sumatra.

You mean Minangkabau follow adat perpatih? What about faraid system in Islam? Are they still follow too? Curious want to know!

@@giezarina6990 hello. From what I researched, the faraid system can be used when either one of the parties do not agree or is having problems with the distribution of properties/wealth. Meanwhile adat pepatih is a fixed culture that is inherited for many decades and it is going to stay that way, that is because the people of that culture is taught to practice adat pepatih (so they don't have any problems with the distributions that is gonna involved faraid system)

She's from Seri Menanti, i no wonder she didn't use onion or shallot in her Gulai Lemak. In Selangor, Onion is very essential in every Gulai Lemak Adat Perpatih is exclusive to Minangkabau people (a Malay Subethnic) which presents largely in Negeri Sembilan and Minangkabau highlands of West Sumatera. They are the only Malay people who practising matrilineal and they are known to be the largest matrilineal society in the world. This contrast to other Malay (and Malay subethnics) where they practising Adat Temenggong or patrilineal.

So far this is my favorite Max McFarlin (video) creation simply because it doesn't just talk about food but more so, about people and their way of life. We rarely see you actually interact with people, it's usually all about the food. This one walks off with the gold! Plenty of cultures are matriarchal but it's good to know what systems are in place to ensure the financial security of women if anything should happen to the "provider". Of course a lot has changed through the years as women have become empowered and independent. Now why haven't we seen more of this from you? This would make a great series, and I believe you said it yourself that you had your heart set on doing it. Needless to say, the food looked delightful and, as usual, you looked ecstatic trying out the dishes - a crazy overload of coconut milk, yummers!

We’re a gang! #teamsambalkicap sambal kicap is my go to condiment when i eat chicken/meat soup/broth. I also eat banana fritters or any fruit fritters with sambal kicap. I agree with Aween. We are all different by appearance, but there are good values in all of us that we should celebrate and appreciate.

@@MVPA-io5ee We always go to celebrate Raya in KL as we love the Ramadan night markets and Raya celebrations! We look forward to that time of year. We stay in kl city centre, they do close for about 3 days there but we try to find things we can do outside of the city. We don't know anyone that lives in Malaysia but we have always wondered how wonderful it would be to visit the villages especially the time of Raya 😊 Hopefully we can catch a glimpse of Max when we are there!

Noooo, u don't eat the begedil (potato ball) in one piece like that, u just need to take a piece of it and eat it with soto, it'll add more texture & compliments the taste of soto itself.. Malaysian food is all about mixing a lil bit of everything 😁

Usually i'll put the potato ball on another plate so it won't get mushy by the juice, just take a bit and eat alltogether with soto rice + nuts + juice + sambal.. the dense texture and the saltiness of the potato ball will elevate soto taste.. try it! 😁😁😁

There are beautiful, kind, generous, Muslims, Buddhist, Hindus, Atheists, Christians, etc all over the world. This I’ve learnt from all my travels. I’m from Singapore and I’ve lived in Tennessee for 2 years. I’ve met some beautiful and kind Southern deeply Christian people there. I don’t share their religious beliefs, but we have a shared humanity based on love, kindness, caring and generosity.

Many tourist came to Malaysia when they want to eat they go to chinese restaurant or Indian restaurant...they can get chinese and indian food at their country...they should eat at Malay restaurant, that's the real food that they cannot get at their country...not many of them try to eat Malay food...and Max, for your info Adat Perpatih only practise in the state of Negeri Sembilan, other states do not practise Adat Perpatih, they practise Adat Temenggong, more to the man.

Malaysian food is Fushion! Thats make it so nice! Same as Surinamese the taste is not the same as “Indian” “Chinese”. Malaysia create own flavour. So whats Malaysian Food? Its Fushion! I love Fushion!!

Hm all the foods with Indonesia same ...we have many soto ...soto ayam Betawi,Lamongan,soto gebrak because my stomach isnot good for coconut milk...green Bean like itu we can seperate with coconut milk ,we boil with gula merah (black sugar)and add ginger make body warm....so familiar foods for Indonesian

First time I saw a person eat Soto on a plate, not in a bowl. When eating using hand (right hand) you need take bits of everything put it on the rice, cut it to bite size and mould or squeeze it until it fits nicely between your four fingers, lock it with your thumb, scoop it by just twisting your wrist, it is important that your elbows should always be on ground or at least lower then your wrist, your elbows act as a central point pivoting all movements. Once you've manage to perfectly scoop your bite, open your mouth relative to the size of the bite. Index finger touch the top lip and pinky finger touch your lower lip, lift your thumb and move it to the back of your bite size and just glide or push the bite size into your mouth. Fun facts: chinese soup spoon should always be slurp from the side of the spoon not from the front of the spoon. You'll notice it is easier and no leave no spills.

I dont think its about being conservative or what Aween refereed to as "moderate" because the family who cooked for you are clearly conservative but welcoming and invited you in their family. The issue is more a case of how the media only highlights extremism and say Muslim in the same breathe, yet the Islam abhors extremism and warns against it.
