The bottled armada may originally be from Pathfinder, but I love this monster so much I just had to convert it into D&D 5E. This creature is one of the most fun and whimsical RPG monsters I've ever come across and I am so stoked to be bringing it to you guys today.

I don’t normally comment but, what if you built it in an old potion bottle? A little boat that has potion of storm giant strength doing knock-back, able to yeet anyone who grabs it. Be hilarious as heck. A Blood Elemental creepy version of this inside a potion of dragonbreath would be dope. Instead of a model ship it’s a model of a dragon turtle with a tiny red steam breath. You could even do this with a black pudding or something like that instead of a water spirit. A model kracken one that shoots ink that is just the darkness spell. So many fun and playful options.

Honestly Ship should be an enemy type, not crewed by alive or undead, not by anything bound to it, just a ship that has a will of it's own and decides to do what it wants. (Is that technically a golem or other type of construct?) As for Plot Ideas: In the middle of a vast desert there is a oasis that is the only hope for travelers, and the water spirit that is there wants to leave so it askes the party for a Ship-In-The-Bottle to get them out and to another water source, but given that will end the oasis many of the travelers and nomadic people rely on the oasis they decide to chase after the "Greedy" party who have "Stolen" the "Sacred" water spirit.

I like the idea of the bottled ships being actual ships that are shrunken down with the crew still aboard instead of a water elemental. Ships and bottles are fun. I changed it up a bit though, instead of a water spirit inhabiting the bottle it was actually the spirit of the captain. Sounds super cool! I can imagine even a short plotline with it: A captain (Barbarian Berserker for stat purposes) gets his bottled ship possessed by a mischievous (NOT malicious) water spirit. Spirit starts to harass the captain, but due to his high charisma, he tells the ship something to the effect of "You're my ship, and you'll be doing MY orders!" and the spirit obeyed. Over the years, they developed a friendship and became almost inseparable. Fast forward to today. Captain gives the adventurers a quest: "Someone stole my bottled ship. It's very dear to me, so if you track the thief down and bring it back, I'll pay you handsomely." Now, imagine the faces of the players when their characters track the thief's lair, open a cabinet, find the ship, and then the said ship starts yelling at them that they'll never take it alive.

Treat it like a murder mystery and have one of the clues be that the assailant "obviously" smashed one of the bottles over the captain's head and fled the scene afterwards. I once ran a short Pathfinder adventure in a Lich's lair. It was full of hauntings, a mansion upstairs and dungeon downstairs, all in its own pocket dimension. The party got to the end of the downstairs and the round room became a whirlpool (adding in some players from a parralel seafaring campaign) and being deposited in a room of the same shape with shelves covered in bottles with ships on them - one of them matching the haunted ship the second party had just been aboard. They were supposed to inspect and move on, but I had a surprise ready just in case. Someone smashed a bottle and the armada sprang into action and wiped the party in short order, which I immediately reset as an illusion a la Eternal Darkness. They were a bit more respectful and careful after that, lol.

I’ve thought of an awesome idea. What if a captain has one of these pestering him, but he ends up locking it up. They then learn that there is a Water Spirit possessing the ship in a bottle, so they ask for the players to obtain it to help them with traversing the open seas, and they have to obtain it by shrinking to size tiny, and invading the bottled ship. So now instead of fighting a small ship, it’s now like your on an actual pirate ship fighting a full crew of pirates. I imagine they get the spirit by either killing the full crew, or to make it shorter say the water elemental’s residing as the captain, so either killing or taking the captain will cause them to release the bottle from their grasp and turn back to normal.

Okay, i really love silly ideas like those so i imediatelly had an idea... for a player character! The main character want to be a pirate captain, have an adventure on the seven seas, hunt monster and find treasures, but... they're poor and ships are expensive. One day, for some reason, he finds this possessed tiny ship in a bottle and they bond in friendship and respect. The little boat sees this giant as their captain on land, and the dream of both of them is to find a method, probably magickal, to turn the little bottled ship into a real life size, big ship so they can go to the seas together one day. Basically a bottled ship familiar idea.

I’m imagining the estate of a wealthy pirate captain. They collect these ships and there’s an entire room filled with them.

A good npc for this is an old navy admiral who sunk dozens of ships. But the captains of said ship came back to haunt the modals he made as trophies of his kills.

The most fun thing about this vid to me is that it was posted around the same time I finished watching the 4 PotC films via RU-vid. . . . There is no 5th PotC film that has a plot that only works by contradicting previous lore like Jack trading something to Tia Dahlma for the compass.

My first thought when I saw this video is a pirate themed artificer with a portable battleship or warlock subclass with a ship familiar

This reminds me of that one dungeon I'm mad mage where the party can get shrunk down to a miniature castle and it becomes life sized. And I can just see a ship going missing and it was actually minimized to be a ship in the bottle with a water spirit keeping the crew at bay in it

I'm taking this idea and making a getaway item for a villain in my naval campaign. In addition to its normal abilities, the villain will also be able to have it grow into a full ship, crewed by water spirits they've bound to the item. They can drop the armada for the party to fight, and then toss out their main one for the getaway

A Pirate Lich who's phylactery is an otherwise mundane ship in a bottle.... protected by a Bottled Armada.

Just picturing some insane conjuration wizard who’s obsessed with being a pirate and he casts enlarge on one of his models while the swarm flanks them

I can see whenever a pirate captain captures an enemy vessel the pirates take the loot and the captain steals the bottled ship they had and adds it to his armada of bottled ships. Then when players finally do battle with the captain himself he has his little collection fighting at his side.

This is so perfect. In my world, the main nation is protected from attack by a magic barrier that fleets can't get past. The rival nation can sneak in a whole armada!!!

I somehow find the idea where after a few rounds of fighting the DM goes to like a cutaway where we get a cutscene of the chaos that is happening on one of the ships where the captain tries to rally his crew to fight the several giants they see as a threat just to go back to the players where they smash the same ship like a toy appealing

I literally just sat around creating a Ship In A Bottle & never had any clue there was a Pathfinder listing for one. I should have known. This is way better balanced than what I invented. Yay!

What was the quote from the book? '"Captains, your Admiral calls for your aid." And then the bottles all around the office rose and began to sail twords us.' Something like that.

My campaign is basically waterdeep in a Biodome, with a series of portals that lead to other Biodomes. One of those biomes is going to be a Spelljammer-esque astral plane, with floating islands in space. This seems like a cool way to get the party their own ship. Maybe using some shrinking magic to size down to the size of the ship as opposed to the ship getting larger (to prevent them from Sky-Pirating Waterdeep as easily) Thank you DungeonDad, very cool.

Maybe this is just the 80's in me talking but if you have one of these becomes a permanent fixture in your campaign you HAVE to have a sitting where the party gets shrunk down and has to go onto the ship.

Id take it in to amore Whimsical place. Imagine trawling on boat when your hailed by a tiny ship swimming in the air right next to you in the air. The captain of the vessel askes you for help in finding their old admiral that had retired to live out his days on land so they can exchange their sea stories of mighty adventures one last time .
