My New Favourite Medusa Retelling (STONE BLIND Book Review)

Another beautiful novel by Natalie Haynes. Stone Blind gives its readers a fresh perspective of the Medusa myth, painting the famous gorgon as nothing more than a woman with the inherent desire to protect those around her. Haynes's Medusa is loving beyond belief - extending her (metaphorical) hand to anyone who needs it throughout this book. We see her continuously support her sisters Euryale and Stheno, her protection of the mortals at risk of being harmed by Poseidon, and her care for the smallest of wildlife creatures once she realises her new curse. It's impossible not to sympathise with this gorgeous rendition of Medusa.
I couldn't recommend Stone Blind enough. It'll have you sobbing for the protagonist, analysing our bumbling Perseus, and reaching out for the princess Andromeda. You'll find yourself tutting at the pages where Athena shows her true colours, but also laughing when Zeus makes his appearances. Haynes is a wildly entertaining author, and this book will really send you on a crazy emotional rollercoaster through mythological history to rediscover one of the most famous myths ever written.

I’m 70 pages in and LOVE it. I love Hera’s Cersei Lannister with phenomenal cosmic power characterization, I love the gorgon’s protective nature and deep abiding love for Medusa and struggle to understand parenthood and love, and I love the petty selfishness of the Olympian’s. It’s beautiful and moving and bordering on profound.

That's a great review. I'm so glad that I experienced this book and Natalie Hayne's writing style (which you explain so well as lyrical but not excessively so). I am just recently inhaling classical mythology books- I loved them all but I feel I learned a lot from this one in particular. Loved the thought provoking themes of why we label some as monsters, as well as who should be the one's we actually fear. I found it profound (as did a previous commenter).

I’m honestly DNFing this book (mostly because of the dark content). But I also don’t really get authors who only have a little sprinkle of lyricism in their writing. For me it has to be either all in or all out with lyricism and this definitely didn’t do it for me.

Its so crazy I've been on youtube since its start and you are the only person like I seriously follow.... I adore the Epics, I mean just the story of the war as told in Godly and heroic terms , the fact that whatever conflict went on brought on sort of a dark ages, also i love the intro they heyya how you doing thing, Really informative and animated.... love the stuff, also subbed and bell icon is clicked.

This book was okay, but I think I went into it with the wrong expectations. I had read the back of the book and it was described as "a fierce feminist exploration of female rage". I had just finished reading Circe and Clytemnestra, and I was expecting this book to have a similar emotional impact and final sense of catharsis. But it just didn't for me. All of the different perspectives from different characters made the story quite disjointed and also made it hard to form any connections with the characters. Maybe if I hadn't been expecting it to be more like the other books, I would have enjoyed it more haha. But as is, I'd give this book 3/5 stars.
