This is so exciting, Shane! Being a very sentimental person, I like the idea of you restoring your father's cabin. Someone else recommended fixing the roof first, and I agree. Also installing the windows that you would like. Then you can take your time and renovate the cabin and make it just what you want. Replanting your father's garden would be wonderful! By planting certain trees, you could make the area more private and quiet. Whatever you decide, please take us along on this journey.

I think renovating your dad's shed and planting the garden would be so meaningful, that has to be my vote :) And it would make great content for the channel, I'd be very interested in following your progress But I can also see the appeal of a change of scenery and the aesthetic of that treehouse is just awesome. Private shower access is an absolute necessity though and I wonder if it's customizable enough for you. That 40k premade cabin is a beaut! Who hasn't walked in to one of those and instantly wanted to give up their house? The simplicity of it is so refreshing... I always feel like living in one would make life so much better? 😄 Good luck with whatever choice (if any) you go with!

I could never deny the amount to which I miss my father, but thankfully, I have this uncanny visceral feeling that he is still here. He never feels far away. And by restoring and renovating is cabin (which was always kept in such perfect and loving condition), I believe it'll make him feel even closer. He would be very happy to know that the cabin was being used and even be thrilled to know that I was sharing it on this channel. I'm so sorry for your loss and the ongoing battle you must be going through (nothing about it is easy). Please know you can always reach out if you ever need to talk. ❤

So, you need to be clear about what you want for your future. 10 or more years out what do you intend? Is this a five year plan, then move on? Owen’s treehouse option implies a non-ownership shorter term plan. No capital outlay. Your Dad’s structure needs substantial work. What is the foundation? What is the HVAC setup in that building? Will you keep your collection and electronics in that structure? What you do depends on the ownership of Dad’s cabin and the primary structure. Do you intend to create a professional workspace? Is it possible to add on a major expansion of the main house where the screened porch is now? Who would buy the main house from you later if you added a purpose built studio? Tear down your Dad’s cabin if it is not sound? The options you presented represent different life plans. Do you want a long term place to live and work that you own and therefore control? You have a place to live now. Do you just need a secluded work space? Will you have the time to renovate the old cabin or finish the interior of a new building? How do you want to spend your time? Filming, travel, editing? Pounding nails cutting wood takes time and takes time away from your creative work. Just throwing a lot of ideas around without all the facts. I would start by working out a long term plan.

@prescotthenry1727

Since you will not be moving your collection from the main house it seems the trick is to make the outbuilding a year round studio /gathering place . You may have to take off entire roof structure. If the foundation is concrete with footings then you have a good base.

So many great options! I love the treehouse. The location and all that exposed wood inside is totally cozy. I think a tiny house would be amazing too. It’s hard to say though because it was unfinished inside but with your own interior design it could be amazing. As for Dad’s cabin , with a few repairs and the porch that would be lovely as well. Lovely is not a very masculine description but you get what I’m saying. So I suppose this is not helping but anyway I hope it all works out whichever you choose! ❤️

I'm in California so we always have to be careful regarding building codes. Even for backyard sheds. For California building codes are the one thing for which there is no "forgiveness", you better get "permission". Your Father's shed will probably be "grandfathered -in" so it can stay and be repaired. Maybe even expanded if no one complains. Such a lovely area. If you like to garden at all I'd go for your father's cabin/shed! But of course I am speaking from a California experience. New York may be very different. Lots of fun choices though!

I am not sure if this is a dumb or irrelevant point (admittedly I don’t know anything about structural or building code considerations) but I was thinking about the sheer weight of your large candle collection and shelving. You of course would want to bring that and other equipment into the structure. Would each of the various types of buildings you are considering handle all that weight ok? The tree house looked quite sturdy from what I could tell. I think any of the location ideas would be charming and wonderful! If you love it and make it all your own we will definitely love it. 😀
@TheCandleEnthusiast
@TheCandleEnthusiast 2 года назад
Thanks, Carol! No, definitely not dumb or irrelevant. One things is for sure; I would NOT or will NOT move my candle collection from my studio/office at home. I've never calculated the combined weight of my Yankee Candle collection, but you're right, WAY TOO heavy for me to feel comfortable putting them into a shed or the tree house. The studio at home is temperature, humidity and light controlled... it's the perfect space for them... so there they'll stay. My goal is to find an additional space with a fun backdrop for future videos, while also allowing me to host guests and to be able to work on larger projects. One day, I'll hopefully build my own cabin, but for now, I'm just looking for something affordable and cozy. Thanks again!!

I like the idea of renovating your Dad’s shed/cabin, but that is really going to be a huge time commitment. The already made sheds-large and small-just seem expensive for what they are. The guest house at your friend’s place seems to be the best option. You could always build on a shower to the existing bathroom since it is an outside wall (I think). Very interesting video!

Sir, you have a bit of Christopher Walken in your speaking cadence. I dig it. i love all of these options. Mostly i think it would be great to honor your father by rebuilding his shed and replanting the garden. if you choose that option, i think you should leave his glove where it is on that pole. But also, how often does the opportunity come along to live in a tree house in the mountains away from it all? That's amazing! i think you should seriously consider that option, but maybe look into adding a private shower. Are you going to want to trek through the snow or rain or whatever to Owen's house Everytime you want to take a shower? And then trek back outside all wet and freezing? Even if the weather is sunny, wouldn't it be nice to just shower at your leisure without having to leave your dwelling? Other than that, if Owen's good with it, i think it's a dream opportunity. Edit to add: i suppose you could dry off first after showering before venturing back outside. You don't have to remain soaked. But my point of being more comfy with your shower situation still stands!

While the tree house is very cool it belongs to someone else. Do you own the land your dad’s cabin is on? If so I would go with that. You can improve it how you like and at your own pace. Design it specifically for your needs. It has plenty of open space and trees around it but you are still close to utilities and shops for when you run out of coffee. Just my preference. I would always rather own than rent. Now if you are renting the land your dad’s cabin is on I wouldn’t want to improve it. What if the land owner wants to sell or develop the land some other way? All depends on ownership IMO. As a young couple my grandparents renovated a shell of a house that was on her parent’s land. They rebuilt it from the outside in, adding utilities, a kitchen and bathrooms etc. Then my grandmother’s sister decided she wanted that home for her daughter and talked her parents into forcing my grandparents out since they had “so much” from years of hard work and she didn’t since she was twenty and newly married. In most families it would have broken up the family but my GPs were practicing Christians so just turned the other cheek and bought their own home which was a struggle after putting all their money into the home they rebuilt for a decade. I wouldn’t have been so nice about it! Sorry for the life’s story but I just wanted to emphasize the importance of property ownership IMHO.

The largest tiny house you showed at the base price of 42k is going to end up being 100k if you finish it. With the tree house I think you'd be giving up privacy and convenience by having to rely on going to your friend's house. The pink tiny house I think is too tiny and seems smaller than your dad's shed. I would consider fixing your dad's shed as the best option. I think it would be a great tribute to him and give you a good amount of space and privacy. I would just think about adding a bathroom with indoor plumbing. Do you own the property the shed is on? Is your current residence also on that property? Are you unable to tear down walls in your current place to open up your space?
