As a person who has worked in the food industry, and in a restaurant, cooking is probably going to be the last thing on your mind when opening a restaurant. I dont know Doobydobap very well, but she seems like a person who loves cooking. But can your passion of cooking be the driving force when dealing with a restaurant? cooking is a very, very small part of opening and running a restaurant

I tried to open a small cafe and failed and _then_ I worked in F&B. Later after 9 months at work I realized I stopped making mistakes, meaning it took me 9 months till I was proficient in dinner service or could run a cafe alone on a quiet day... But previously I tried to do the same as a business from zero experience! If she knows what she is doing that's alright and it's _just a risk_ like in any decision you make in life, but with limited experience it's all a massive risk that she may not be prepared for.

Very serious piece of advice here. If you are planning on using your Dooby Brand or any part of the Intellectual Property you have built on RU-vid in the restaurant then ensure you own that element 100%. Even if you have partners, investors or loved ones helping out financially, get contracts made that protect your IP and ensure it remains with you. The restaurant business is 50/50 at best, you don’t want to be in a position where all you content is part owned by other people should the worse happen. Protect yourself.

After being in the game for 5+ years, I am now understanding everything so that just shows how difficult it is in this industry. Just know that being a home cook is NOT the same as being a restaurant cook/owner. If you have no experience working at a kitchen, then you will 100% fail. I would strongly suggest you work at a restaurant and work each position from the dishwasher to the manager. One very big lesson I’ve learned is to be mentally and physically prepared because this will be the biggest test of your life. Your life will go out the window, and you will be burnt out. Read any book on any successful chef and they will all have one thing in common. They all get burnt out. Just don't turn to drugs or whatever vices you have to cope. When you are ready to give up, stop everything and take a break. Don't be afraid to go on vacations and take as much time as you need. Adjust yourself and be ready to go again because If you're able to hold out and hang on, then within a few years I promise you it will all be worth it.

there's alot of wisdom in the staleness thing. as with content creators, keeping things fresh throughout just vlogging is a tough ask in the long run, since the space is always extremely competitive. expanding your business model beyond just vlogging is both as risky as it is necessary in ensuring you retain both your brand presence as well as keeping your knives sharp. end of the day, it can only be as bad as an expensive lesson learnt if you fail, and a lucrative franchise if you make it through. godspeed.

Don’t wanna rain on your parade, but you have no business being in the restaurant business. Even if you know the business well, its crazy tough to make any sort of profit and is a crazy tough business to begin with. I would also strongly recommend against doing this venture with a BF, cuz the minute you and he have issues, it will spill into the business and make it even tougher. And, if the two of you end of not working out, its a complete and utter disaster waiting to happen. I’m all about taking risks, but take it from someone who did something very similar and it caused me a LOT of hardship. I was so stoked about spreading my wings and getting into a new business venture and thought I could learn on the job, but I was very wrong and ended up spending a LOT of money and time and in the end it was just a money pit. I should have listened to my father like you should have listened. I want to support any young persons dreams and decisions, but at a minimum, I hope you and your partner have a contract that stipulates what happens if one of you want to walk. Just for fun, and 100% not saying this is your situation, but you may want to watch the Netflix special entitled “Bad Vegan” about a famous NYC woman restaurateur who married a shady hustler opened the first raw vegan restaurant in NYC that was highly successful and how they hustled $6M out of investors. She claimed gaslighting and manipulation, but still wound up in prison.

And this is BEFORE the place even opens for business. Look, hospitality in general and especially the restaurant business is a true labor of love, but important to be realistic about things vs cheerleading.

Your dishwasher snuck out the back to buy his drugs and disappeared. Meanwhile the toilet is plugged. Are you ready to get out of the kitchen to deal with the bathroom? I'm not afraid to be flat out honest - Is she doing this FOR HERSELF or her boyfriend? I have truly enjoyed her content but I figured she'd go all in obsessive when she finally got another boyfriend. I truly hope it works out for her but I implore her to have something in place in the event things don't work out with that relationship. Please, don't end up walking away with nothing. She has worked incredibly hard and her content is AWESOME. Cooking and being cute in your kitchen at home is NOTHING close to what her and her boyfriend of less than a year are about to take on. Some of the toughest, hardest and down right ICK lessons I've learned in life started out very similar to this. Best wishes, Dooby.

Yes! I saw many red flags all over. First of all, she hasn't been with this new boyfriend for a long time. No one in their right mind in this day and age would think of taking a huge financial risk and starting a business together with their boyfriend of 6 months. I mean sure... what could go wrong? 🙄 You can be madly in love with someone but I kid you not it takes YEARS to really know a person and truly understand them. I really hope she is doing this for herself; not for the RU-vid content and not solely for her boyfriend..although that's not the vibe I got from this. sigh

i would definitely recommend working in a back of house position even just for a little to see how all aspects of a restaurant run. unfortunately, it isn’t all fun and games creating recipes and cooking food, which i am sure you know and are learning. but you’ll also pick up on little things, such as making sure your food has cooled completely before storing or putting a lid on, and labeling the sides of containers rather than the top. wishing you all the best on your new journey and looking forward to watching you continue to learn!

I think the storyline/storytelling aspect is just a bonus of your vlogs and not the main attraction. The reason why ppl watch your vlogs is because they like your down-to-earth, funny personality. In regards to not knowing what you’re documenting with your videos, I believe it’s your life. You have made a documentary of a girl who is trying to find herself in Korea and making a living whilst doing what she loves. You should try working in a restaurant for a few months first! There are no so many things that can go wrong with the kitchen and the front dining area. It is gonna be takeout only to start? Do you mind telling us your layout out plan? Obviously go for it but research first! Maybe Start off doing catering to build clientele.

Love it but owning a business is a whole world of stress different from content creating. You’re gonna have to be boss, accountant, HR, trainer, chef, marketing, etc., at least until you hire someone to do it for you and even EVERYONE you hire will look to you or anything and everything. We might don't know much about restaurants business or can answer what was the concept that you've been doing exactly in the past video, bc honestly we seeing you as a healing machine. in my case I've been struggling with ED for a while now and seeing your video cooking or just filming what you eat for breakfast while talking about random topics are just so heart warming for me. ok what I want to say is don't be too stressed, you don't need to. Do it! Honestly I was making RU-vid videos for a while and then also craved a different structure. I ended up starting my own tea business and explored all the things I could do. It’s a painful process, but rewarding and now you can sleep at night not regretting you didn’t try! And don’t listen to the haters, all them sitting behind their screens judging and not taking leaps. I’m taking a pretty big leap of faith in my life right now, what I’m doing might not seem like a big deal to other people but it is for me…. the environmental cost of transport is very little compared to environmental cost of land usage and water. plantbased is always a better option even if imported vs local cow milk

Dooby - I have to say that you’re one of the most initiative-taking people I’ve come across :) I’m constantly in awe at the life you’ve created and continue to create for yourself. I know it seems like there’s a large influx of people who are doing bigger things, but it’s truly rare to see someone be so willing to do these things even with so many people telling you otherwise! TBH, I’ve picked up a different grand theme or storyline from your videos. I think I recall this channel starting with the feeling that you were just waiting to immigrate and return back to New York. However, because of COVId and the immigration system, you’ve kind of been stuck living in Korea. I think you have this different perspective of being Korean, but due to being sent overseas at a young age, (e.g., boarding school and university in the United States), you’ve developed more of a western mindset. As a result, it seems you’ve been disconnected with the local community, even most of the friends that you show on your channel are all somewhat connected to a western lifestyle (e.g., went to school overseas). So it’s been interesting to see you longing to live in New York and live that western lifestyle, but be ‘stuck’ in Korea. Your channel has shown the progression of you reintegrating back into Korean lifestyle. Every time you mentioning that you are rediscovering your city, I see that. I think the most recent New York trip was a milestone because you kind have mentioned that you no longer felt that living there was the end all be all. I’ve always seen that as your ‘POV’ or grand theme/storyline-not all the other storylines that you mentioned. I viewed those other storylines as noise. That is just my, perhaps, hot take.

with your youtube channel as free promo, the restaurant is almost guaranteed to be a success. another youtuber i follow became accidentally successful on youtube and went viral before their book was released and their book became the number 1 new york times best seller for months. and i’ve tried a few of your recipes so i know the food will be good. you got this!
