It has been a long journey collecting all the parts, pieces, and cabling, but now it is time to revamp my console set up to 3.0 and take full advantage of what Extron Matrix Switches have to offer for Retro Gaming! I'll show my new console set up, and go over why Extron makes it come together; plus I'll revisit what you need to use Extron Matrix Switches for Retro Gaming (Composite and Component).
Update: my current set up uses the 4 Port Rocketfish HDMI Switch now, as the the matrix switch seen in this video was causing some issues for me.

They are really neat. I love just pushing the buttons haha. Currently, I’ve got all my consoles integrated, even the ones that use SCART. I’m using RetroTink RGB2COMPs to accomplish that. I’ve ordered a scart switch though just a few days ago, going to use that now instead, because that will free up inputs on my Extrons from more consoles.

Your video with a few other channels got me hooked on these switchers. First one was a 24x12 that i had to fix. Now i have 6 with different amount of inputs and outputs. But i have 16 gaming consoles, multiple vhs 8mm and dvd players i wanted to play and record on easily. With multiple crt's and other displays. Love these.

I think v4.0 should be getting a Crestron processor and control your console AV switching with a touch screen like I do 😀I wish RU-vid comments could upload a photo, I’d show you my work in progress. My system consists of a Crestron DMPS3-4k-100-C, TSW-1052, Extron MAV 84, Crestron HD-MD8x1 (hdmi switching). Essentially the touch screen turns the power on to the TV and does TV controls and to switch the console selection, click and drag which console you want and it switches it to the proper source.

That is an awesome set up! And great suggestions! I definitely need something more efficient for HDMI consolidation. That 8x1 Crestron Switch is a great idea. Another thing I’m definitely doing is getting Blue Retro Cores for all my consoles, that’ll let me use the same Xbox or PS controller for ALL my consoles. Very efficient.

@@RetroBoost I'll definitely have to check out that blue retro core product. My system is still a work in progress as previously said and still has a ways to go, the last piece of gear i need is a retrotink so I can upscale the composite to a 480p signal. Once I get that I'm going to build a small av rack to house all that gear and i gotta make the wiring looms that run from the AV switching system to the systems. Still trying to figure out how i'm going to structure the consoles, but at least from coding stand point i got that done lol

Awesome setup and great info on those extron swites. I hadn’ heard of those before. I went on ajourney many years ago that still goes on today a little bit. I have one console left that uses Composite signal. My Nes and I hope to Rgb Mod it someday to use with Component cables. Currently it is plugged into a large Crt and looks nice nonetheless. I have two systems that use S Video and those are my Philips Cdi 220 model and the Panasonic 3DO FZ1 of which I both hope to get Rgb modded someday for use with Component cables. Again, I have them both plugged into a large Crt and they Look great, especially the 3do. I imported a Japanese 3do with the 240p switch which really cleans up the image. Now of course, I have the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and Switch all plugged into a 1080P Led tv for perfect resolution balance through Hdmi. I also have my PS4 Pro plugged in through Hdmi but on a 4K tv to take advantage of that. I have my Dreamcast hooked up through a Vga monitor with the Oem Sega Vga box and damn does that machine look glorious that way. Finally, every other system I own is hooked up with Component cables. The OG Xbox is using the Oem box with component cables. My PS2 uses the PS3 Sony component cables and I have optical audio cables for both machines as well. My Gamecube is hooked up with the offical Nintendo Oem component cables. These all go to a G Comp Component switcher which is split between a Crt and an HD Tv for the best compatibility for enhanced definition/widescreen games and 480i/light gun games. The big one is the other systems. My Ps1, Super Nes, Sega Master System, Sega Saturn, Model 1 Genny/model 1 sega cd/32x tower, and Us Neo Geo Aes are all hooked into the G Comp using HD Retrovision Component cables for beautiful Rgb to the crt. I got my N64 rgb modded and have the same cables being used there as well and I got my US Turbo Duo Rgb modded, recapped, and region free modded and use the Hd Retrovision component cables there too for beautiful visuals. Finally, I use the Jag2snes adapter and Hd Retrovision Component cables on my Atari Jaguar/Jag cd unit. There are so many compenent cables, I had to get two G Comp Switches. 1 that goes to the large crt and a smaller one and the second one goes into the large crt and the 1080 led tv. Also, the Led Tv is on a wall mount that can turn vertically as I am a huge fan of Shmups, so with that, I have the ability to play every Shmup I own in Tate mode and the Analog systems that support widescreen in widescreen. Meanwhile, all audio is fed into the stereo for surround sound. This took many years and is my obsession but everytime I play a game, it looks and sounds great. I look forward to when I can get the 3DO, Nes, and Cdi on the component switcher as well to finish it all up.

That’s a fantastic set up! Never thought about being able to turn a tv to best suit shoot-em-ups, that awesome! I need to look into utilizing multiple screens too, that’s a killer idea the way you use the gcomps to work with that. Love it! That an a CRT, need to eventually get one as well. Biggest obstacle is space right now, need to find a way to better condense and organize things.

Been slowly working toward my next set up. “4.0” if you will. Thinking about using Blue Retro Cores on each console, so that I can use the same controller for all my consoles. Then I might add a SCART Switch, like the one RGC made for the 5X Pro, so further consolidate inputs and free up some slots on my Extron Switches. Bit by bit, I’ll get there. Update: I’ve decided to lean mostly into 8bitdo’s receivers, and have gotten them for most of my consoles. The only ones I don’t have 8bitdo for are the N64, GCN, and Wii. For those I’m using a RetroTime BlueRetro Receiver, and can still then use an 8bitdo Pro 2 controller for them. Decided that I would use a scart switch into an RGB2COMP as well, this way all those scart sources can be output to a variety of outputs.

Update, the Blue Retro dream hit some snags. Bought a couple of Blue Retro Cores, one of which seems to be either defective or is super non-cooperative. I’m able to use it normally, but can’t for the life of me get into its configuration to custom map buttons. The Blue Retro Adapter made by RetroTime was very good, they are making a GameCube one next, maybe they’ll eventually make one for every console haha. The Blue Retro Core that is working is for the GameCube, I was able to access the configuration over Bluetooth. I still may get more Cores, hopefully the defect I encountered is something that won’t happen again.

@@RetroBoost What is the shelving used in your setup? I'd love something large enough for a few systems and maybe a couple CRTs.
@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost 10 месяцев назад
@@gilramos5767 It is heavy duty garage shelving. You can customize the height of the shelves, so theoretically I could fit a CRT toward the center. I’ve been happy with it. I added monitor stands to then add “sub-levels” that the consoles can sit on, allowing for more to fit.

Another update on this controller topic: 8bitdo let me achieve the “one-controller” dream. Got their receivers, then got a Pro 2 controller, which also works with the RetroTime n64 blue retro receiver. The Pro 2 doesn’t have full functionality with the GameCube Blue Retro Core, that was the only snag, the L and R inputs don’t register. RetroTime is releasing their own GameCube receiver, which I hope will work fully with the Pro 2 like the N64 one does. Great controller.

Oh wow, awesome recommendation! I have a shielded SCART Cable from RetroGamingCables for Xbox, but the problem with that is that you lose the ability to have the Xbox output 720p or 1080i, since SCART maxes out at 480p.

RetroTink makes a SCART to Component converter, so you could use a Dreamcast SCART cable to plug into it and then run a component cable into the Extron. Sort of an expensive workaround for the convenience of having everything go into the Extrons. However, I’ve been waiting for the Dreamcast component cables for years, so I gave up and purchased a Retro Access SCART cable. It plugs straight into the Tink-5x. It’s the only console I have hooked up using SCART. If/when HD Retrovision of Retro Gaming Cables or someone else releases good Dreamcast component cables, I’ll definitely buy them. But by then I’ll need a third Extron! 😅

Thanks for putting these guides together, man. I picked up an Extron and started fiddling with it during the pandemic as a little tinker project. The thing that kind of stopped me in my tracks though was figuring out how to capture footage! I've got question about two parts of your setup. 1. Could you go into more detail about the capture card part? You said it was an internal card, so I'm guessing you have a PC right there. Is that your primary PC? I'm in a position where my setup and primary PC will most likely need to be in different rooms, so I'm weighing my options. There are some capture cards that record to SD, which would solve the problem. Or I'm weighing the possibility of a small PC build to basically just run Elgato's capture program. Any thoughts on those options? 2. *Please* tell me what HDMI switcher you're using. I've experimented and messed around with so many and they all tend to come out lackluster. But you look like you've got several inputs on that baby and I can't help but be jealous. Cheers and thanks again!

@RetroBoost Год назад
Thanks for watching! As of right now, my current set up has my Extron output to my RetroTink devices, using its multiple outputs via component to do so. Each RetroTink then runs into a Rocketfish 4 Port HDMi Switch. That switch has been go to me, though it seems fickle about doing the 1440p resolutions of the 5X Pro, sometimes it does it, other times not. The one I had in this video wasn’t the best, I think it was forcing everything to 16:9 that came in as 4:3, plus it had a little bit of input late since it was a matrix switch and not just a regular kind of switch like the rocketfish is. Then from there an hdmi runs out to my PC, I have an Elgato 4K Mk2, which has an input and an output onboard. It is an internal card, so it plugs right into a motherboard, with the aforementioned ports being accessible on the back of the PC. I usually just capture using OBS right there on my pc, with the Elgato card as the source. I did run an hdmi from the Elgato card’s output to my tv though, so I could play there like “normal” if I wanted to. Despite all these steps, Ive never had a problem with input lag as long as I use the Elgato’s output hdmi. Very rarely Ive noticed a smidge of lag when playing via the OBS capture. My pc is all AMD, about 3 years old now. It’s a Ryzen 3900X with 64GB of 3200MHz RAM using a Sapphire Nitro+ as the GPU. I have an external SSD that uses USB-C to send all my capture to, stuff is stored long term on different drives though. The internal drive is also an SSD. Hope that helps!

@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost Год назад
That was something that worried me when I first got them hooked up last year, but I’ve never noticed any noise, distortion, or degradation. You’d think that there would be latency with all the jumps, but again I’ve never noticed any myself. I think the main that helps prevent loss of picture quality is the fact that these switches are powered, and since they don’t buffer or process the picture, it also keeps latency to a minimum.

@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost 9 месяцев назад
Thanks! These Extron Switches have 4 outputs each, so I take Output#1 from the Top one and run that via Component to Input #1 on the bottom switch. Then the bottom switch is using its outputs to run to my different RetroTink devices. So the bottom one is kinda the “main” and the top one acts as another source when it boils down. Theoretically you could have 8 different extrons all output into one single Extron as a way of funneling your sources. That’s pretty extreme, but hey, someone out there has probably done it haha
@scottb_02
@scottb_02 6 месяцев назад
To run RGB through the extron wouldn’t you just use a BNC-to-Scart cable? I got one from I think Retro Gaming Cables. I use it for my PVMs’ BNC connectors. I play my RGB modded NES, N64 & Genesis using it. I just plug the consoles scart cables into the BNC-to-Scart cable, and boom RGB.
@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost 6 месяцев назад
I’m not totally sure how you’d run RGB through the type of Extron that I have. I’ve seen breakout cables sold at places like RetroGamingCables, but all of those have the Sync Cable as well, like what PVMs need, and like the one I got to play with in video I did with Video Game World. I’m not sure if that would work on the Extron Switches I have though, but I’ve never tried. I’m about to revise my set up, and will use a Scart Switch for all my consoles that can use RGB, and that switch will connect to an RGB2COMP, which will then run into my Extrons. Why? To allow for all my RetroTINKs to be able to access those consoles. I was tempted to run that switch directly into my 5X Pro, but then what happens if I get a RT4K? Uh oh, gotta rewire it all to that, but then I the 5X Pro is left out. It’s the only way I can keep everything connected.
@David_Odie

I think with Extron switches you wanna skip the scart and just go with straight rgbs cables? Check retroaccess and just click the "BNC cables" tab. I think you'll find what you're looking for.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve been using a RetroTink RGB2COMP for now for my N64. If I could get just a cable with the right breakout that would save on cabling and the need for power. I haven’t notice any latency issues or picture issues with the RGB2COMP though, I’ve been happy with it.

Not bragging, if not for the special employee promos, I’d never own that stuff, but I say that because once I found out about products like RetroTINK, I really enjoyed being able to really use my retro consoles on my tv. I had a 2X Pro originally, then got a 2X Pro M when I realized that the 2X Pro cannot accept 480p input, which the GameCube, Xbox, and Wii are all capable of outputting. Then I got the 5X Pro to further consolidate my needs into one device. I still keep everything hooked up though because it’s fun to have options! Given that you said you have the GameCube and Wii, I’d recommend the 5X Pro so you can run those consoles in the better output modes. It can make a real difference. The nice thing is that you can just use your Wii for running GameCube games in progressive and avoid the additional cost of component cable. Wii component cables, even shielded ones, are easy to get and aren’t terribly expensive.

How are you connecting your RGB sync from the Extron switchers to your CRTs?
@RetroBoost

I don't have a CRT Tv. Been looking to get one recently though. My PS1 and N64 (RGB Modded) use Scart cables that run into RetroTINK RGB2COMPs, which then run into my Extron Switch using Component Cables. That is a complex but effective way to get higher quality output from those consoles while also keeping everything consolidated to my Extron Switches. I made those changes not long after making this video. Before that, I was just running Scart cables directly to the 5X Pro, swapping when needed. An alternative would be getting a Scart Switch, like the one RetroGamingCables was working on. I think that is out now.

@bnr32jason
@bnr32jason Год назад
You may already have figured out the answer, but for your Extron Crosspoint, you would want BNC cables. These come in various ends, most common being BNC to VGA and BNC to BNC. You can also of course get SCART to BNC. The great part is these are all fully analog so you can link them together as you please. For example, I've got one output that goes from BNC to VGA, then with a VGA extension cable attached, finally ending in a VGA to SCART cable. All works perfectly and lag free. What you have to watch out for with these is when you start using RGB cables, you have to account for sync as well. It gets pretty complicated from there. It doesn't look like you are using any CRT TVs, monitors, or PVMs, so that simplifies things a little for sync stuff. I would recommend you try to hunt down a small CRT TV or PVM just to give it a shot. The Retrotink 5x Pro does an awesome job, but there are still certain things about a CRT that can't be replicated. Great setup though, glad to see people discovering Extron devices. While the gcompsw/gscartsw can output to two devices, they can't do so simultaneously. That's where the Extron Crosspoint really shines, you can send any video and any audio source to any output you want to all at the same time. That's why when new these things cost so much. Thankfully they have been retired in professional video production environments so we have a ton of them available to us for affordable prices now.

I’ve seen cables that end with bnc on a few different websites, those are definitely on my list. I’ve invested so much into the cabling I have, so I’m utilizing that with RCA to BNC Converters for now. I’ve also been really curious to get a CRT, but the problem I have now is that there is just nowhere to put it. That’ll be stuff for the 4.0 set up I guess. Fantastic information here though, really appreciate it!

Does this make input lag
@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost 4 месяца назад
I don’t believe so, at least not an amount that is of any concern. The person who first recommended me was a very knowledgeable guy on analogue video and audio tech. He’s the same guy that first showed me RetroTink and CARBY actually; He explained to me that these Extron switches don’t buffer or process the video, they just pass it, thus there is no added latency, at least not an amount that should be noticeable. I never have noticed any, even when daisy changing my two switches. Was playing super Metroid this week’s past and had no trouble nailing some tricky sequence breaking wall jumps (tricky for me at least haha), something that would be really really hard if the input lag was above normal.
