Hi guys! I've had my new suspension system consisting of Dobinsons springs and Koni shock absorbers installed for a few months now, and have been testing it out and filming my findings in the time since. This is a full review and test of the new suspension system based on the type of 4wding I mainly do (rutted beaches, lumpy hill climbs, and an on-road test too of course). I hope this helps if you're looking into upgrading your suspension system and are wondering what to expect from this configuration. Cheers!

Good on you Bianca for lending the Subie - my head is now Hilux but my heart still belongs to Subaru (10 of them) - I’m still kitting out canopy for my Dual cab 2010 Hilux - so far standard suspension looks good - I’ve been testing all items against my weight criteria test - 27l Engel Fridge, Amptron 100ah battery, your slide out pantry and dual burner camp stove - will be interesting to see what happens with 24 Zero Stealth low profile tent - John in SA

Hi mate Thanks for the vid What are the specifications on the front and rear springs please. What are the load ratings? Thanks Mick
@explorebound
@explorebound 3 года назад
Hi Michael, the springs are Dobinson L39-032-R leafs and TB39-1551 torsions. Leafs are constant load 420kg and torsions are their "heavy duty" model (to support additional weight such as the bullbar, sidesteps, 2nd batt etc).

What Koni series shock did you go for? I have the big 90 Raid on the rear of my D40 Navara and I love them, especially as I have full rebound adjustment, are hydraulic and long travel. Don’t have them on the front yet, but will be changing to them shortly and really looking forwards to a more balanced setup.

Hi Tor, their 82 series were the compatable models for the Ranger - super happy with them so far!

is it a 2 inch lift and has it created any drive shaft issues at rear ? any spacers being used or diff siff to correct angles ? i got a west coast suspension 2 inch lift and have been very happy with but cant floor it from a standstill without tailshaft clunking .otherwise very good especially with a decent load ,300kg springs for towing and load
@explorebound
@explorebound 2 года назад
Yeah this worked out to be a 2" lift, although I got a lot more in the rear due to sagged factory leafs and the weight of the canopy haha. Haven't had any issues with the rear drive shaft luckily with no spacers or diff adjustment.

Do you get alpt of feedback from the road with these shocks compared the others???
@explorebound
@explorebound 2 года назад
I didn't notice much difference in road feedback to be honest, but definitely handles the bumps a lot better!

Just one question mate . Does it sit level ? My front sits way lower than the rear lol looks like crap that's after getting it done.
@explorebound
@explorebound 3 года назад
Sure does mate, pretty much spot on. That's until the canopy is removed then it's a bit high in the rear as you'd expect haha.

Hey mate do you happen to know what part number for the koni 82 might be ? I can't find any that specificy pj/pk or bt50 .. as I I have an 08 bt50 and wouldn't mind getting my hands on some as I'm looking at a 2" lift and want decent shocks
@explorebound
@explorebound 2 года назад
Hey mate, the rears are Koni 82-2604 and fronts are Koni 82-2591 - great shocks!

Cheers mate appreciate it , our of curiosity what sort of lift to you end up getting our of the set up, obviously your lugging a fair bit of wait so just thought be interesting to see
@explorebound
@explorebound 2 года назад
I got about 1.5" - 2" in the front, and 3" or so in the back (becuase the factory leafs were so sagged).

Hey mate, how is it as a daily now without the canopy on? Really considering a similar setup as you (canopy on for trips only) but unsure how harsh the ride would be on the bitumen when unloaded. Thanks :)
@explorebound
@explorebound 3 года назад
Hi mate, it is quite rough in the back when the canopy is off to be honest - still better than the original setup but definitely more comfortable with the canopy on
@SirNari
@SirNari 3 года назад
@@explorebound thanks, this is weighing in on my decision. Perhaps a parabolic leaf would help ride comfort with/without canopy. But 500kg is probably pushing it. Anyway nice setup

Considering what you done with the lift off canopy & suspension with the ranger - is there anything you’d do diffferent now with the dmax?

is that lifted with the springs?
@explorebound
@explorebound 2 года назад
Yeah it was technically a 2” lift but worked out closer to 3” in the rear

Was this just a upgrade or a lift
@explorebound
@explorebound 2 года назад
Hi mate, I believe it was technically a 2” lift over factory although I got quite a bit more in the rear due to sagged factory springs while the front stayed similar (factory torsions were wound up). This resulted in levelling the car out rather than the tail sagging which was great
