Barry ended up pupating a few days after filming! He made a cocoon out of fuchsia leaves, dirt and his own silk, and turned into a chrysalis out of sight, so sadly I couldn't film it. We will now have to wait til Spring for him to emerge. 🤗

I wanted to say, my hornworm pooped a log EXACTLY like that the day before she buried herself and pupated. They must expel all their digestive juices in order to survive pupation. Anyway I'm ecstatic for you and the wonder that lies ahead.

So exciting! When I was younger and lived in florida, by dad had tomato plants that attracted a lot of Tomato Hornworms. So, I had lots of hormworms as pets growing up. I can't remember all their names, but I do remember I had one named Jelly Bean that I would take everywhere with me. I had him in a mason jar (that of course had dirt and leaves in it for him) that had holes poked in the top, so that I could carry him around.

I currently have an elephant hawk moth in its cocoon, the one I have at the moment would only eat Fox gloves. Was the only one my dog found in my garden, but I’ve 2 other small ones in with it & found some funky yellow caterpillars when digging up my garden. Actually thought they were maggots till I got a proper look. I’m absolutely fascinated. My child is quite excited to see it when it hatches too.

I’ve got it in a smallish ice cream tub with some compost that I soaked (is that the right thing to do?) , also I’ve got some twig in there so it can chill on it with fresh privet leafs to munch on. Have found one and the caterpillar was big but when it entered into chrysalis stage and successfully overwintered (in my place they have rare chance of overwintering or hatching at all) I checked the chrysalis and it moved but what troubles me is the size of the chrysalis, it is small unlike other chrysalis i have seen on videos of this species, right now this is the month it should hatch and still waiting for 5 days this month. But is it normal for the chrysalis size to be small than in these videos?

What do you do after your geckos have been snuggling on you, or at least when they've touched your clothes, or your pc, or something. Do you like disinfect your clothes (A little stupid question)? Because I hear about people who let their gecko onto their pc while they use it, and such, but do they clean their pc afterwards, to not get any bacteria from them. Because I always wash my hands before and after handling my gecko, but when he's been on my clothes, what do I do with them. Keep them on, or just wash them immediatly? Is there that much of a danger of handling reptiles.

I planted my hanging baskets and window boxes this year with some very pretty hanging fuchsias only to find them completely decimated a month or two later. Upon closer inspection I discovered a very large, fat elephant hawk moth caterpillar which had devoured pretty much an entire plant. I removed it and promptly went out to buy more fuchsias to feed it in order to keep it alive. Oh boy can this thing eat, it munches through 3 to 4 stems, leaves, flowers and all in just one day. It is a fascinating little, sorry wrong word BIG caterpillar with an astonishingly even bigger appetite.

Hi Rachael! I love you videos, and absolutely appreciate all the information you give!! I have a question I was hoping you could give me some insight on. I have two leopard geckos, both are female. The eldest is Tango, and she is about a year old. The other is Arciah, and she is about 5 months old. Tango has started attacking the glass when I pass her terrarium during the night. I dont know if she has just associated my presence with food (I place mealworms into her tank and food bowl one by one), but I'm worried that she might see me as a threat. She doesnt show any signs of being stressed though, and I handle her quite a bit. I'd love to hear any advice you have, or if this could be normal behavior! Thank you so much!

wow really? :) This year I saw one walking on the pavement but didn't pick it, I also saw a hummingbird hawk moth flying about, then my friend found this one, but I rarely see many of them.

I have an elephant hawk moth caterpillar and really need help with how to safely house it etc. I'd love some guidance. I saw some places say some caterpillars need a lot of compost so they can go underground to pupate. I'm lost and unsure how to keep him alive.

Keep it in an outhouse to match the natural winter temperatures it would experience overwintering. Make sure spiders can’t access the hibernation area. Keep out of direct sunlight. Ensure you check daily. Ensure there are twigs it can hang from when it emerges to allow its wings to fully develop and dry. This is crucial. Hopefully that should give it the best chance. Good luck :)

Unrelated to this video. But I have had my gecko George for over a year and recently he has just stopped eating. What should I do

Is his tail getting smaller? What’s the warm side temperature and is your thermometer digital or analog? He may be going into semi brumation as it’s getting colder.

I have a elephant hawk moth pupae because i found one of the caterpillars outside my house, do you have any idea if i need to keep it at a cooler temperature to prevent it from coming out early?

I breed these and the best way to keep them till spring is in an airtight container in the fridge. Otherwise in a cool garage/shed. Not indoors or they can hatch too early

Yeah I always put them in my conservatory or a little attic area near my room, as it's cooler but not too cold to damage them. I have to do the same when hibernating the ants :)
