My NEXT radio acquisition. Yeah, I bought a Motorola APX NEXT again.

Against my better judgment, I couldn’t pass up this deal. I once again on an APX next, and while it is an intriguing radio I’m not sure if it is special enough to claim the number one spot in my radio bar. I’m gonna go through some of the pros and cons and share my thoughts.
As a private user, I am very limited on the additional features that I get to enjoy that this radio is known for. I’m sure that there are other departments that are making far better use of this than a guy like me, but I can only share what I know.

Thanks for the kind words. Just remember that it’s always easy to see the end result of hard work and not the 20+ years of hard work, self sacrifice, and discipline that it took to get here. But, thank you.

Id love to have one as a paramedic just for the amount of channel switching I do on a regular day. ViQi would be very helpful for those critical patients where I gotta keep my hands free to swap to a channel to communicate with Helicopters/ER

So, I'm a paramedic in an extremely rural area and my county is apparently requiring all agencies to swap to our 800mhz phase II system, and I guess my agency is buying the next. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Our current analog VHF system is pretty terrible, our portables are almost unusable in most places, and we completely lose comms if we enter a building, so it's obviously a massive upgrade over that, but I'd honestly rather an apx 8000. I think the next is just too complicated, and honestly it's probably too fragile. I give it a few weeks before someone smashes the screen on the front. I'm also concerned about how much more expensive the next is. Someone will definitely lose one, and get reamed for that, an 8000 is expensive enough. I AM excited for viqi and the smartconnect feature though. Apparently since the next has LTE capabilities, combined with motorola smartconnect we should have radio reception basically anywhere with theoretically infinite range, since we often end up outside our county taking patients to the nearest trauma/burn center. That'll be massive for us, so I'm overall very excited. I just hope these things are as rugged as the 8000s.

@mrflashport
@mrflashport 7 дней назад
The only thing the APX NEXT buys one is Smart Connect, and it has to be added to one's Radio Central account and agency account to work on SC. It's just an APX8000 with a 4 year old Android phone with a locked down fork of Android on it. Not worth the hassle as a private user, an APX8K is a much better investment for private use.

You should make a video that showcases any special features of this radio that might be useful to amateur radio operators (if there are any). I love Motorola public safety radios, but I have a hard time justifying the expense when I will only be able to use a fraction of the features. Not to mention the fact that DMR is much more prevalent than P25 in my area.
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 23 дня назад
Totally agree. DMR is far more common, but comparing DMR on a Motorola MOTOTRBO to a Kenwood VP8000, the Kenwood wins hands down, no contest. P25 seems to be the area where Motorola excels. Without FPP Motorola radios are of almost no use to a ham. I’ll see what I can do, I’m not a very active ham though so I’ll tap into some of my sources for advice.
@Saber341
@Saber341 23 дня назад
@@AdventureCruiser A video on the topic may not be worth it, but it was just a thought. I would consider the VP8000 if it had NAS and free CPS. Call me crazy, but I'm a Ham that doesn't use FPP. I just have all the local repeaters and simplex freqs channelized.

@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 23 дня назад
It depends on the firmware, if it’s newer than 4.05 and local programming is enabled, you can program it using CPS just like an APX8000

My duty radio is an APX7000. I got to demo two APX NEXTs for the Eclipse back in April. My big complaints were it was slow to boot (since all of my Zone select functions are in the menu for my programming), I'm torn on SmartConnect because where I could use it...I have 7/800 MHz coverage (VHF Trunking for me). The extra width doesn't fit my hand as well. I don't really care much about SmartMapping or ViQi (Vicky), using Radio Central (I'm trying to migrate 2300+ radios to RM and they won't support Radio Central) either. That being said, I think the writing is on the wall...a new APX8000 versus the NEXT is a $200 price difference when you compare them optioned for the features that the APX8000 can support. The N70 just isn't worth it as it's only really $700 less than a single band NEXT (which is just about the price of adding an extra band to a NEXT). I'll end up buying a next at some point...but I'm not in a massive hurry to.

I haven't heard anyone talk about the NEXT and NAS. I know it works but I couldn't find a way to make it where you can't access all the talk groups/channels in the radio, it's pretty much like a mobile when it comes to NAS. I removed the channel menu in the CPS but it doesn't remove it from the radio, giving access to all zones and channels.
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 23 дня назад
And this is unfortunately why I don’t do NAS on APX. Simply too risky. Sad that I can do this all on a cheap uniden scanner but not on my nice radios.
@flightstatic4662
@flightstatic4662 23 дня назад
I bet your probably right about the 8000 being more futureproof, though on a side note did you get past the programming issues you had with your last one? if so, how does it compare to the normal APX CPS (if i remember correctly the NEXT uses some web based thing right?)
@AdventureCruiser
@AdventureCruiser 23 дня назад
@@flightstatic4662 great memory and better question. Yes I can program this exactly as I would and 8000 or 8500. Once you are over firmware vision 4.05 I believe, and have local programming enabled, it is the exact same as any other APX.

The only way a NEXT could make a phone call is through a system phone patch. You cannot install apps or access a "store" to download anything on the NEXTs. A Mototrbo ION can make calls through a normal cell provider.

For me .. I haven't touched the Next.. But I feel like, for first responders there's a lot of features that aren't needed. And more features most of the time, means much more to go wrong. I've got APX4000's in service at the moment, and there's some people who struggle with them. I could only imagine those people with the next.
@Tommymad1
@Tommymad1 23 дня назад
Agreed. I'm a paramedic and I'm concerned about the giant touch screen. My old agency had 4000s and they were nice. My agency's upgrading to the nexts and I just think they're unnecessary. I think an apx8000 would serve us better. Most of the people here barely even know how to work the CAD, I'm not sure they'd have any idea how to use one of these. Not to mention if someone manages to drop one flat on it's face, the screen's cooked...
