That was fun! Your son is such a lovely boy! Props for your husband's Dutch, it sounds great! The draadjesvlees (pulled beef) and aardappelpuree (mashed potatoes) and rode kool (red cabbage) combines very well together. Most Dutch dishes like these are meant to combine all the elements, as the more salty element like gravy or the pulled beef should support the more bland elements like the stamppot or mashed potatoes or vegetables. Spices in these dishes are often nutmeg (in boerenkool stamppot or mashed potatoes for example) and cinnamon and cloves and bayleaf /laurel is put in the red cabbage, and made easy if you melt a slice of ontbijtkoek in to it. Often pieces of apple are also used in the red cabbage. I always find this a very tasty dish.

I am dutch but never eat very typical Dutch food. The thing I really love in the Netherlands is that we have a lot of food opportunities. I never really realised this, until my nephew moved to Italy and couldn't find any foods from Thailand or basically anything from another country. We send him a care package very often. But we can get a lot of international food in the supermarket, like indian sauces and chutneys or Italian pasta. If you can't find it in a regular supermarket you probably find it in a toko (specific supermarkets like Turkish toko or the Asian toko). I love that I can eat so diverse here. I made Akara (acaraje) a few weeks ago. The Netherlands is also very vegan friendly!

Hi Maeve, I agree with you on this 👌🏾😊. I have been able to find even the weirdest Nigerian food items here in the Netherlands. Sometimes I randomly find them in open markets or in Asian supermarkets. I am really grateful for this, because food was one thing I was a bit concerned about before moving here cos I’m not very good at trying out new meals🙃. I’m happy I can choose to cook and eat almost anything I want🤗💃🏾

@@josphineogugua I am glad you can find a lot of Nigerian food. Even if you can't find it in the (Asian) supermarkets you can always ask about it. They sometimes are able to order it. There are also multiple webshops that might be able to help you. I think it is fantastic if people move from their home country and come to the Netherlands and don't have to miss their comfort food!

My BF is Nigerian and I’m Dutch. He can’t cook so I always take care of it. I cook many different things, I even try to prepare Nigerian stew sometimes but I need to practice it more. My BF loves my food though! The only thing he always says is: where’s the spice? It’s not spicy enough! 😅 I can’t handle spice at all so I don’t put much in. It’s very nice learning about Nigerian culture!

First time watching your channel. And now I'm curious about Nigerian food! The mashed potato is often bland-ish to be a neutral part of dinner, so that other things can be extra tasty, and the blander component balances it out. But there are also MANY versions of the mash. In more modern days the Dutch are learning to use more and more spices.

I know that place. I used to come there quite a lot when I was a student. Simple, hearty food that would make you feel at home, it's like finding a place on Sicily where they don't serve pizza. Traditional Dutch food does in fact not contain a lot of spices which may seem a bit odd because of the history people read about, but the spices that came in from south-east Asia where really only for the rich. To add more flavour regular people could use local grown items like mustard, horseradish, celery and onion. So the first dish you had was a meatball with `spruitjesstamppot`, a mash made from potatoes and in this case brussels sprouts. I don't think these are in season now, so I'm not sure why. Probably to offer variation to regular customers. The most common variant of stamppot is with kale (boerenkoolstamppot), followed by carrot and onion (peen-en-ui, hutspot) and raw escarole/endive (andijviestamppot; the fragile leafs will already cook from being incorporated in the hot potato mash). The meat in the second dish is called draadjesvlees (in Spanish ropa vieja) or stoofvlees (braised beef). It's one of my family's favourites and fairly cheap to make if you're not counting time. The last one, yes that is shredded spinach. It doesn't have a lot of taste and I think that the egg is added to give you the idea that you should chew on it. If someone knows different, please share.

@@josphineogugua the recipe I love for the draadjesvlees is the meat (magere runderlappen, riblappen of sucadelappen) cut it in pieces. Fry some union and garlic. Add the meat. Add red wine, clove, laurel, mustard grains, salt, pepper, (stock cube if you like) some sundried tomatoes, worcestersauce. And then let it simmer for hours till it falls apart (this can take up to 3 or 4 hours), ones in a while stirring everything. i love to use red wine, but everything sour works. It is to make the meat tender. The sundried tomatoes and worcestersauce are not in the ‘original’ granny recipe, but I love them. Gives it a deeper flavour. What a lovely family you have. I would love a video in which you make your favourite Nigerian dish. Are you planning on one?

The second dish is called 'draadjesvlees'. The meat is stewed for several hours and will fall apart mostly and will look like strings. So strings is draadjes and vlees is meat. To make the meatballs you need groundbeef with the preference to half beef and half pork. A lot of butter like croma from the fridge, an egg and bread crumbs. If you like you can mix it with an chopped onion and some other herbs. Mix everything well and make balls of it. Put a big amount of butter in the pan and make sure the butter is all melted and becomes a little brown so your sure that it's ready to cook in. Put the balls in the pan, turn them a couple of times, so they're all becoming brown from the outside. Now turn down the heat of the stove so the inside will be cooked as well. The balls are swimming in the gravy that we love to mix with de boiled or mushed potatoes.

I like that even though you both prefer your own traditional foods you truly tried Dutch food. I haven’t tried it before and now I look forward to doing so one day. The meatballs sounded like they were the most delicious. Good luck to you and your family ❤

I’m from the Netherlands and I liked the video so Mutch! U guys are great! Your husband Dutch language is great! The call the meat: draadjesvlees. It’s like beef and the pull it. So it’s a kind of pulled pork, only is it beef. 😂 I’m sorry if not all my English is right. I hope u understand it a bit!💕

The stuff on top of the smashed patatoes in the first dish is called Piccalilly. It's actually not Dutch, but we use to put in our dishes, like draadjesvlees, stamppot and speklappen (kind of bacon).

researchers said in general dutch people are shrinking one of the causes according to them is fast food. Dutch cuisine can be kind of lame and not spiced but its very nutritious
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua 2 года назад
Hi Michiel, I actually thought about having a video discussing this topic😆. It just seems weird some of the reasons researchers gave. Especially if the reasons didn’t contribute to the Dutchies being so tall in the first place 😆. But I agree that Dutch meals may not be so spicy but indeed nutritious 🤗

I would say that the most popular stamppots are: stamppot zuurkool (it's with saurkraut), hutspot (it's with different kinds of cabbage) and Stamppot Boerenkool (it's with kale). All of the taste wonderful in the winter with some nice thick gravy and a smoked sausage. I'd love for you to try traditional split pea soup as we make it here. It's so full with wonderful things.

Hutspot is with unions and carrots, not cabbage?

With stampot you should push a shallow hole in the stampot and fill it with gravy. And you scoop some stampot with gravy.

I love the stamppot too ... I'm American, so grew up on pretty much the same kind of diet (meat, potatoes, vegetable). I learned to LOVE sauerkraut though by combining it with mashed potatoes like the Dutch do (aldus stamppot). I never eat mashed potatoes plain anymore and if you want to make them taste even better, add 'spekies' to them. Bedankt aan Jan Hollander voor het lekker eten.
