5:58 If you’ve only seen Branagh, you should check out Poirot with David Suchet. Blows Branagh out the water. Proper adaptions of all the Poirot stories, just a fantastic series of episodes and films.

I'm so glad that they did all of the Poirot stories with just David Suchet. He's fantastic in the role.

I'd agree that Suchet is miles better than Brannagh, but I found some of the adaptations a little disappointing. I vaguely remember one that ended with a chase through a brewery (possibly The Murder of Roger Ackoryd ) they were good but I wasn't keen on the added bits just for the sake of it that weren't in the books

The Thin Man movies have always been some of my favorites. After & Another were my favs as a kid. The Kolchak series is a lot of fun!! Darren McGavin is great in the role. Just some fun mystery meets horror stuff. Also agree with watching the David Suchet Poirot series. Used to watch that with my mom all the time as a kid. Incredible production values, with run times usually around an hour.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Basil Rathbone’s only other in-period film is my personal favorite of his films. You can’t go wrong with Jeremy Bretts version though, pick any episode. Otherwise I recommend Poirot. That show is brilliant.

"It's never a mistake to watch The Thin Man." Truer words have never been spoken. I watch The Thin Man every Christmas. Why, yes, it is a Christmas movie as the bulk of it is set during the holiday season and also because: murder. (I work in retail, okay? Xmas is a rough time for me. 😖)

Great idea! And great list. I am not a fan of the modern Agatha Christie films. I really like Branagh as an actor and he's a great Poirot but I don't think he's a great director. The casting is underwhelming and everything feels CGI digitized. Death on the Nile 1978 is terrific and is the polar opposite of Branaghs films. Great cast and shot on real locations. I also highly recommend Sydney Lumet's Mystery on the Orient Express 1974 for all the same reasons. If you want another courtroom murder mystery I suggest Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution.

Love Witness for the Prosecution! But yeah, Death on the Nile looked pretty bad visually, but Haunting in Venice was shot on location and looks beautiful.

Witness for the Prosecution is my favourite all time pure entertainment movie! And Murder on the Orient Express is surely far and away the best of the all star murder mysteries! Not many thrillers have had me crying for the feelings of minor characters…

I am also not keen on most Agatha Christie movies - they generally move slowly. But yes, Witness for the Prosecution is a fine courtroom/murder mystery - Agatha Christie said it was her favorite film adaption of any of her novels. But the best Christie film adaption in my humble opinion is And Then There Were None 1945, directed by Rene Clair. Its light and witty, very entertaining. Also, can I suggest a murder/noir called Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946). Stylish small town noir, great script, great performances by Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and Kirk Douglas (in first performance) - and wonderful lush score by Miklos Rozsa. PS really enjoy your channel.

You're gonna love the Sherlock Holmes movies. I thought it was curious that the blurays showed more grain than the DVDs... higher resolution, I suppose. Still, they are exceptional; watch for the details in tweed jackets and various fabric patterns. They did an exceptional job restoring these, especially considering what they had to work with as you mentioned. If you like Sherlock Holmes, I highly recommend you also check out the Charlie Chan movies (starring Warner Oland, Sidney Toler, or Roland Winters), Mr. Moto movies (starring Peter Lorre), and Mr. Wong movies (starring Boris Karloff or Keye Luke). They all work on a very similar premise, and all are very entertaining.

If only they would have known there would be five sequels, they wouldn't have named it, "The Thin Man" because that is a character related only to the case in first film. Imagine if the Sherlock Homes books were titled, "A Study in Scarlett", "After a Study in Scarlett", "Another Study in Scarlett", "Shadow of a Study in Scarlett", "A Study in Scarlett Goes Home", and "Song of a Study in Scarlett".

My favourite Agatha Christie adaptation is the 1978 Peter Ustinov 'Death On The Nile.' It's a lot better then the Branagh version, with some different characters. The cast is incredible, including Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith and David Niven. But I also love 'Evil Under The Sun;' it's a lot of fun (that rhymes!)

Love the Rathbone Universal Holmes series and yes I a hammer fan but I don't love their version of hound of the baskervilles that much although Cushing and Morell do a really good job! I saw some of the thin-man movies as a child and enjoyd them well but I never got into it again as an adult Gotta check them out again! Perhaps you've never heard about the two british 1980s films starring Ian Richardson He is definetly my second favourite Holmes and he was such a fantastic actor for example as a corrupt politician in the original british ,house of cards' version Worth to check out him as Sherlock!

DUDE! DANIEL!!! I double-dog, NO! I TRIPLE-DOG DARE YOU TO DO WHAT THEATERS DID WHEN "WAIT UNTIL DARK" HAD ITS FIRST RUN RELEASE: for the last ten (I think) minutes the lights, the dim lights in the theater, the 'soft' lights on recessed sconces on the walls that were always lit, THEY ALL WENT OUT AND STAYED OUT AND THE SCREEN WAS ABSOLUTELY BLACK. Seriously, you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. (Yeat the fire-marshals screamed about keeping the signs lit on the exit lights, but the theater I was in had little shades on this). Watchers are plunged into Audry Hepburn's world, and it's. . . . yeah. . . not giving anything away. I saw it with a couple of guys from my scout troop (we were in junior high, i.e. middle school, eighth grade), and this SCARED THE BEJESUS OUT OF US!!!!! So: put your Big Screen tv on 'movie' mode (not standard or dynamic), get black out drapes for the windows, (even at night the ambient light gets in) Get your viewing room as dark as you can!!!! Heh. You will not regret this! When this was revived as a broadway play they did this too in the theater where it was playing. Fun, Fun, FUN!!!!----JY

I added The Hound of the Baskervilles to my watchlist for this month. I know I saw a handful of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies when I was a kid but I can't remember which ones. Not sure if I'll be watching many other murder mysteries but it's a genre I really enjoy. I rarely watch new releases but I'm gonna check out Sofia Coppola's new movie, Priscilla, and David Fincher's new one, The Killer. I'm a huge Sofia Coppola fan and this looks like a return to form for her stylistically. I think Fincher is incredibly talented but his movies are sort of hit or miss for me. I know the writer of Seven wrote this movie so that gives me some hope. I also love Michael Fassbender. Anatomy of a Murder is so good! I love Lee Remick and Jimmy Stewart is terrific in it. Hope you enjoy it.

D, I’m right with you on November cozy mysteries, a great season for misty moors and vine laden mansions. By the way, William Powell is not the titular THIN MAN nor is the detective Nick Charles The Thin Man. The real “Thin man” refers to the murder victim in the first movie played by actor Edward Ellis. Just some trivia for you, my friend. Enjoy your chilly, foggy November eves! -Glen

All of The Thin Man films are great, but the first three are the classics. 1978s Death on the Nile is perfection - much better than the earlier Murder on the Orient Express, which has an impeccable supporting cast, but Albert Finney's Poirot comes off as a bellowing grouch with a thicker than pea soup accent and Sidney Lumet directs with all of the passion and urgency of a deflating tire. Green for Danger is good, as are the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple films. The Spiral Staircase is great as well. Witness for the Prosecution with Laughton and Dietrich. The British film Sapphire is interesting. The original Cape Fear puts the remake to shame. The Hildegarde Withers mysteries are wonderful - especially the first three with the amazing Edna May Oliver. Murder at the Vanities is an oddball concoction you might like, as is the Barbara Stanwyck mystery Lady of Burlesque. A few posters mentioned The Last of Sheila, which is very underrated.
@seasonstudios
@seasonstudios Месяц назад
"Wait Until Dark" was a great premise but Alan Arkin didn't carry it for me because he was associated with too many odd ball comedies and that was the guy I could see in the character. It was like when Bill Murray did all his tongue in cheek comedies and then he suddenly tried to do The Razor's Edge.

If you'd like something a little more tongue in cheek, look for Neil Simon's Murder By Death (1976). It's a great 'old house' murder mystery comedy spoofing older detective movies, such as the Thin Man series (represented by David Niven and Maggie Smith), The Maltese Falcon (Peter Falk plays the Bogart character), Mr. Wong (spoofed by Peter Sellers), and Agatha Christy's Hercule Poirot (James Coco), and Ms. Marple (Elsa Lanchester).

Daniel, you are The Man! Your channel is now my first port of call when looking for movie recommendations. I have the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes boxset. Absolutely excellent. Got all The Thin Man movies. Honestly, for me, the best Hercule Poirot has to be David Suchet. Not sure if his Poirot series aired in the U.S. but I can't see anyone bettering his portrayal of the Belgian detective. The Night Stalker films and series are always enjoyable. If you're looking for hour long, black and white detective mysteries, you can't do better than these: Charlie Chan (Warner Oland, Sydney Toler and Roland Winters) Mister Moto (Peter Lorre) Bulldog Drummond (John Howard) Mister Wong (Boris Karloff) Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd, Morgan Conway) Cheers mate. First of all, I really enjoy this Channel. Sherlock Holmes: I have watched the entire collection, Basil Rathbone is magnificent but I have problems with the depiction of Dr Watson, he is too much of a bumbling fool in these films. Furthermore, I prefer versions that are true to the books by Arthur Conan Doyle, here we have too much "based on characters by". I can strongly recommend the TV-series with Jeremy Brett, for me he is the perfect Sherlock Holmes. Anatomy of a murder: Awesome. There are some great extra fatures on the Criterion disc, watch them. Thin Man: Love them, although the last installments are not as good as the earlier. Watched them for the first time about fifty years ago, the Archive restorations are great. It was pure happiness when Warner began releasing these blu-rays. Poirot: Peter Ustinov and Albert Finney are good as Poirot, but my favourite is David Suchet. In my opinion, the Branagh Poirot is just peculiar. Scarlet Street: Watched it a very long time ago (>30 years), I don't remember the details, but it made an impression. At least I remember that Edward G. was nothing but magnificent in this film. An Inspector Calls: Almost bought it a few years ago. Not the ususal Alastair Sim, eagerly awaiting your review.
