I love seeing people modify challenges like this to suit their own needs. It's much more realistic and beneficial to complete a challenge that's based on what you actually care about and what you're realistically able to do.
you just gotta not respond to or give any time to the critics boo! People will always try to police and belittle others to uplift themselves. You don't need a disclaimer love, be unapologetically you and don't let anonymous people on the internet try to ruin your joy!
this, plus if people are going to have a problem, they will no matter what you say. you couldve said youre only eating wet corn meal and tap water and people would still talk hella shit LOL
Please ignore the toxic opinions. This is YOUR plan and YOUR experience to fit in with YOUR life. There is no need to justify it to anyone else. It’s kind of you to share your experience and progress and I look forward watching. Good luck 🍀 xx
I also think its more healty to do stuff in moderation. I will also have my version of a no buy year, to be ABLE to spend when it really gives ME value... Its so importante to see!!! I have actually a good example of this... Like coffe on Starbucks, I see many say is an unessesary and expensive thing... This is actually now one of the things I will rarly buy during next year for for me THIS year that is for when I really, really want it... BUT a few years ago... I had traveled budget style before, sitting on the floor waiting for the airplane (lyxeriouse to fly I know! And Im SO grateful I could) but... The first time I could afford a Starbucks Coffee, at the airport, sitting in their nice sofa waiting for the plan, not sitting on the floor (which obviousely is good too!) was such a lyxeriouse moment for me and at that time that Starbucks coffee was SOOOOO worth it and valuable! For ME, in the economic situation I was then. Like starting to earn money on my own without money from parents etc. So EVERYTHING, almost, can be a good purchase for SOMEONE!! We want a happy as good life as we can right, thats a GOOD thing!!! We save and do non spendimg years right to be able to enjoy life MORE, not less right. We all have a short amount of time on this planet and I think everyone is worth having their best life (without destroying for others ofcourse). But for the ppl getting angry for you buying stuff... We do this saving/non buying thing TO be able to buy stuff or experienses we REALLY REALLY want and/or to kinda buy a sence of security and calm by having a bigger buffert. For everyone everything is valued differently, and even at different times in our life. Thats totally normal and good/fine!!
Your no buy year sounds very livable and not stressful. I am going to do a low buy as I’ve already preordered a few quilting kits coming later in 2024. By not impulse buying clothes, jewelry, sewing and cross stitch items, I will be able to save $$ easily for two of our grandkids who are graduating this year and the oldest who I like to give cash to as she is in her second year of college. Plus clearing debt. Hobbies are expensive and I have so much. And like you , books. I’ve also learned how to cut my hair and I’m going to stretch my glasses over another year so my hubby can buy a much needed new pair . Different generations but like minded in many ways. Go and experience as much as you can and make memories!!!
Getting mad at someone for making a plan to SAVE money for x reasons with wiiiild. Your videos actually motivated me to make a plan for 2024 instead of the usual "I'll try to spend as little as possible and then judge my spendings at the end of the month" mindset
I agree. Some people must literally be so bored and miserable. Everybody’s lives are different and no buy doesn’t mean you can’t buy anything period, so categories will vary based on the person.
One thing I’m planning on doing and could be interesting to hear from you in your updates is keeping track of “temptation” item prices to look back on each month. Whether it’s a $7 pack of pens, $6 scone, or $80 sweater I say no to, it’ll be cool to show myself how much I saved when I stayed strong.
I do this by transferring how much the item would of cost to a different account on my bank and then I use that money as splurge money when I wanna get something expensive or use it for holiday/experiences money
The haters gonna hate, they don't understand that you're not trying to join the Amish community but just limiting your spending. Don't worry about them, your videos are helpful, and kickstarted my own journey that I wanted to do but never got the courage. ❤ You got this
Doing the no buy/low buy year and including my hair and nail appointments as well as 2 entertainment/eat out per paycheck. Im paid biweekly so for me this is a HUGE cut back from my normal impulse purchases. Also an ADHDer. 🥰
After your first no buy for 2024 video I talked with my son who is 18 and lives with me about my plans to also do a no buy year. He actually is really on board with it this time. So he has been helping me to plan it out and already has been keeping me on track. My main goal for doing this is to pay down debt and also downsizing the stuff I own and using things up.
Love the 'joy and connection' theme! I *am* gonna buy/pay for a 2-day yoga nidra course in my no buy year. So suck it 😂 Don't let the holier-than-thou trolls get to you.
omg i hate that you got hate comments - your video gave me the inspiration to do a no buy year myself and what i got from your video was that it’s entirely up to you what you consider a no buy year! which is great since it lets you cut out the things you know you shouldn’t be spending on and cut down to just essentials. i’m here for this whole series!
I just realized that for the SECOND time, I forgot to mention eating out + activities etc LOLOL OKAY so I honestly barely do it (clearly... because I keep forgetting to talk about it), but my plan is to have a dollar limit for money I'm allowed to spend on eating out, going to cafes, museums, etc. I also have a few trips planned that will eventually have their own respective budgets as well! but don't worry bc I'll update y'all with all the details every month ;)
What's the budget? Yes I think respond to the critics but only if they have a point and not just being nasty. And it's a known fact that vlogs talking about money will have double the amount of views.
I absolutely agree with you that a "no-buy plan" is whatever you make of it! It is meant to be personal to you and your journey, for your own purpose and reasoning. Criticizing someone else for not "doing it perfectly" is silly to me. You are doing a fantastic job! I love your list and I take so much inspiration from you!
Please ignore the negativity. As you said in the first video you can do a no buy or low buy or whatever suits you. Loved your video and felt very motivated by it. Thank you!
im so glad i found your channel, i have a bad habit of being like "oh i havent spent THAT much and it's very cheap" and then going over my budget, and as a student that's a bit much to happen every month i've tried limiting my buying but im very bad with motivating mysef to do anything without outside influence so hopefully this will go better, and i'll actually stick to the rulles i set for myself
Love this. I’ve never heard of a no buy year but thanks to seeing the title of your other video (without even watching it lol) you’ve inspired my husband and I to have a no buy year in 2024. We have our plan in place and I agree there’s nothing wrong with it being a very individualized plan & actually buying SOME things. The haters crack me up. We don’t need to take life so seriously, not everything is all-or-nothing. 😊merry Christmas!
This series has been so helpful for me! Thank you Grace! I'm not much of a spender, but you encouraged me to keep track of where my money is going. Also, I have so much respect for you for taking the criticism well. I read some of the comments on the previous video about this and they could have been nicer if they were trying to give constructive criticism. But hey, in the end you won because of engagement. 😊 Hopefully RU-vid revenue can help pay off your debts and computer. I make sure to play every video you post in the background muted while I'm on my computer, when the topic of the video isn't for me. That's my tiny way of supporting your channel! I'm excited for the January update on the no buy series!
I honestly feel that people cannot break between no BUY and no SPEND they do have that all or nothing approach and these are the people that get upset when they can't stick to something because they haven't sat and thought about the logic. I think about a no BUY as 'things' you buy eg makeup, jewellery, skin care, the stuff that you don't need just want. You will always need to SPEND money especially on work related stuff like subscriptions especially for social media people, and medical things like glasses - it's for safety, not fashion, if you don't own a jacket at all and it's winter then that's a safety thing - but buy something to suit your needs not a top designer brand. I did a no buy in 2021 and I was very clear about many points like this. I see in so many groups people are upset that they had to pay the water bill or rent and are upset they spent money - you need to do that to live... People are always going to have opinions and I find the people that are the loudest are the ones who don't understand between buy and spend.
i'm so sorry you got negative comments to such a thoughtful, well-intentioned no buy plan that is personal to YOU. while you didn't need a disclaimer i'm glad you're sticking with what feels right in this next step of your minimalism journey :)
I love the idea of just making ourselves aware of what we buy every year. I stumbled onto your video by accident but you're really inspiring. Got you a new subscriber here, I'm confident you'll continue to inspire us ;-)
you do you! honestly annoyed at those negative folk - you don't owe them any explanation. your previous video inspired me to start my own low-buy and hoping for the best!
I’m so thankful you popped up on my RU-vid feed. I’ve watched all your No Buy videos and am planning my own No Buy year. I need to pay off debt and declutter + not bring anything else into my already very small living space 😂 my ultimate goal is to clear out my storage space because it’s ridiculously expensive for the size, which definitely plays into not bringing in more stuff.
I am documenting my 2024 Low buy year as well. I plan on doing a monthly update with how much I was able to save each month, if I messed up, and any feelings the month brought up. ❤
I admire you for doing this while you are young. As a person who has gotten themselves into much debt by impulse spending and keeping up with the Jones', I think you're doing great, and enjoy following your journey:)
so true and I love that for you!! I personally decided to take my hair appts away because I really wanted to make my last hair appt this year and I wanted to honor that to myself and I realized that my "exception" on my previous list was really a bit of me being scared to commit to that. I realllly want to just have my natural hair (it's been a goal of mine for a while), so I need to just suck it up and let my highlights grow out and leave my hair alone LOL
Yes I agree a No Buy is what you make of it, I don't pay for haircuts but I still pay for photo storage and when family needs money, and I'm not going to skip buying them school supplies or a birthday presents particularly the young ones, but at the same time I don't want to buy seasonal home decor, books, plants, electronics, make up, small aplliances etc
It is one day at a time….control it’s all it is. I just stay home no shopping….if I go out it’s control and try to not to look around I go in and get my list and get out fast ! A List is a wonderful thing to have helps so much. Love you ….you will make no spend a habit 😊 ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄❄️❄️
I can't believe that people gave you so much flack for this. You are a young person, and I think it's wonderful that your mind is even in this place where you are wanting to save and reuse, and not waste money or resources. I can promise at your age, I was not thinking about this. Kudos to you, good luck with your plans, and keep up the good work.
I would love to see some lists on things to do to keep you busy or doing things that help you not spend. We sat down as a family and made a huge list but we are looking for more.
I agree that a no buy year is absolutely personal. My no buy year list is pretty short. I’m already pretty frugal - I am putting a stop to my mindless spending but I will still be buying some stuff.
my yellow light items have a 150 dollar budget because in my opinion none of them are necessary but as someone who budgeted so hard for 3 years and blew basically all their savings and ended up in credit card debt, i cannot just spend a literal zero on wants. i want to build a capsule wardrobe, so i put down for clothes that i must shop second hand first and that i can only buy clothes once a month. as long as i dont surpass that 150 we're good. you can implement mini limits per item on your list even, so you dont go crazy if youre like me and were set up for failure in the mental health department. i have a painfully impulse driven brain and i just want people to know if you feel you cant just drop spending, youre not a failure, you can still do this challenge. all or nothing mindsets do more harm than good most of the time.
Thanks so much for making these videos. As soon as I saw the first one I was like YEESSSS. The fact you are personalising it makes it so much for attainable for example I have an 11 month old so it's inevitable I will need to purchase things but thinking second hand ect x
Don't listen to the noise. Everyone has a different mindset about what 'no buy' means for them. I have a budget and follow a ton of financial YT channels. Your video inspired me to reevaluate my spending. I really like the color list system. Like you said, it's a journey and you are sharing your POV. Thanks for being open and honest.
Ur content is awesome I found you for the no buy year ur awesome. Ignore the haters theynitpick everything because they’d rather criticize everyone but themselves.
I am so grateful that you are doing your own version of a no buy year, that fits your life, because it makes me want to do my own version of a low buy year… I have five daughters, an old home, a husband, am a student, my kids are students, drive an older van and my husband drives an older truck… we cannot do a traditional no buy or low buy… but it makes me want to do better… and make better choices and not spend compulsively… I have recently (but long known) have been diagnosed with ADHD… dopamining is hard… Love you and your channel and am so glad to have found you! Keep it up!!!
I appreciate your outlook. It's like meatless Monday's. Nobody's ready for full on vegan without a trial run. Do what works for you. You've inspired me to try a low-buy year along with you!
i’ve been loving your videos grace, they’re so calming, inspiring, and you honestly really give me company when i’m trying to be productive in my lonely studio!!!
I just saw a video from unproductive bestie about what to do if you have an impulse to spend: watch a new movie/show or fund a hobby instead of the item you're impulsed by! helped a lot! I watched your no buy year vid a while back too, good luck!! I'm on the journey to pay off debt as well!
Just do you Grace. Your no-spend year is yours and the fact that you are trying is really awesome. I appreciate your videos I found you when I was having a tough time and I still am. Your videos has been really helping me and I thank you for the effort, time, and videos.
Last year, I made it 5 months without buying clothes. It was way more difficult than I thought it would be! My breaking purchase was a garment by a local artist. (I did have some fast-fashion purchases later, though 😢 but that's how I can afford pants.) I am so excited to try this challenge! I am a maximalist out of habit, not out of enjoyment.
1. The fact that people are getting cranky and mad because of how you are choosing to shape YOUR no buy journey is SO entitled. Cranky haters please go away. Positive vibes only please. 2. Thank you for sharing Grace, I am one of the newbie that your video found and Im so glad it did! Im excited to get started and give this the best shot I can and see a difference it makes in my bank account and clutter - I can already see a difference in this month, all thanks to your video. 2024 is not gonna be perfect and if you end up buying something, then you bought it, it’s okay and not hate or judgement will come from me, all part of the journey. 💜💙
This is why I related to your challenge more than others. 💜Just ignore the trolls with nothing better to do. They most likely are critiquing you with out making any changes themselves.
I just love the fact that some people have absolutely nothing better to do than bully someone for how they choose to do whats best for them as if they pay their bills. So sad. Always do what’s best for you. You are supported.
I live way way WAY out in the countryside. I buy food and necessities in bulk because I can't just pop over to a store easily. So my budget looks way different than many others to save on driving and gas. I found my temptation list is easier to handle with my wishlist being handy, just pop it on there and I no longer feel that temptation. I allow usage of my wishlist with holiday/birthday money. Books are my love and bane. I've been rereading my collection and adding a few to my necessities BECAUSE they are work write-offs (being an artist, we need frequent study and to be kept up-to-date with new programs).
Hello Grace, I just found your channel and have watched two videos and I didn't find them chaotic at all! I think you are very articulate and the lists and headlines on your videos make them organized and easy to follow.
I like it! I have a thrift clothing buying problem. I go on 50% off day and lose my mind!!! I'm always like hey I have a big closet and it's only $2.00..... A garbage bag full of clothes later :)
Love the "I'm not a purist" chat in the beginning because you're so right. It's better and braver to try something to your best than to never try it at all!
I’m so excited to start! Your videos have really encouraged me to take this seriously. I’ve seen countless financial and ‘no buy year’ videos; in the past I was like, “absolutely not.” But now, I am ready! 💪🏼 best of luck on this coming year!
Please don't listen to all the negativity and hate you received. I found your channel off the video that blew up for you and it's helped me a lot to get ready and plan for my own "No buy" for next year. Side note we have the same issues books and nail polish 😂 I do not need any more of either with my 30+ nail polish collection and an overflowing bookshelf. Those two items will be the hardest for me to not purchase next year but that is the goal.
You've helped me focus, think about this seriously and I'm so grateful to you. People need to remember we're all different and so we'll approach this is a way that works for us. Honestly it makes me cross youve been given a hard time when you've done nothing but be honest and kind. ❤
I just want to make this more accessible to people!!! the purists make me so sad because that's what drives people away!! and most of the time, those people need this experience the most!!!
Now them people leaving stupid comments know better. No one who has any sense ever watched your videos and thought you were a fraud. Everyone’s lifestyle and spending needs look different, and anyone who can think for themselves will know this too and not expect you to be raising your own livestock or growing your own food and completely ignoring your bills. You do not need to explain yourself, I promise people just like to take a ride on the stupid train once in a while. I’m excited to see your journey, and I like to see how others navigate a conscious budget and spending plan when we are constantly bombarded with tailored ads and marketing. Based on the number of views you’ve pulled on this series, a lot of us are in that same boat and I’m glad I found your channel. Keep up the good work!
So sad that people are criticizing you for trying to make a positive change in your life ,damn haters. You actually inspired me to a no buy January that will probably go on in 2024.You were the first one that said to take an inventory of what you have and I am shocked I have a lot of clothes, shoes and other accessories 😮 ,everyone else just go into the rules but actually counting all your items makes you realize how much you have and what you still need.I have bought a few items now as I'm going on a cruise shortly but that is basically enough for now.I will definitely include haircuts and nail appointments as I'm an academic and cannot look ratchet for my students😅Thank you for inspiring us new subbie here lots of love from South Africa!!!!
Yeah I think something all of us could think more about, and this ties into minimalism and decluttering/organizing as well, is to consider alternatives to ownership. For example I'm a bibliophile, but current me spends a lot of time cleaning and tending kids and realistically I'd benefit more from the experience of going to the library with the kids than buy one more thing that will be another responsibility to care for. A very random thing that has helped me walk past almost 100% of would-be impulse purchases is taking a pic of the item and telling myself I'll consider it and can come back for it. I'm trying to think if I ever have haha That's my main reason for wanting to do a no buy, is to get the inflow of stuff under control and to hit the reset button on shopping habits.
This is my first attempt at a no buy year and just seeing people on similar journeys hopefully will help me stay strong because last night I was all over the shopping apps trying to convince myself to stock up??? Made it through last night and now here we are day 1!
Everybody doesn’t have to do the same GD No-Buy challenge!! We are NOT THE BORG!!! You do your no-buy and let this beautiful soul do HER no-buy. Good for you girl!! ❤❤❤
I 100% agree with your take and I think it makes perfect sense when you think about what you are doing a no buy year for. For some people it may be because they're saving up for a big project like buying a house or paying off debts, but for others it's just a way to be conscious about what you're doing with your money and using it for what's truly meaningful. For instance I've decided to do a 3 months no-buy because a full year didn't feel realistic for me, but I have a single exception and it's concert tickets for Itzy's world tour as they are my favorite kpop group and it would just be stupid for me to miss the opportunity to go to that concert just because I'm doing a no-buy. But aside from that, there are still so many things I will no be buying such as clothes, junk food, stationery, etc etc to the point where my no-buy doesn't lose it's purpose. Sure this may qualify more as a "low" buy but I don't think it's the end of the world, and people getting mad for such things should really go touch grass ...
I'll definitely follow you during 2024 because I made a similar no buy resolution for 2024 and I have to carefully think about my personal stoplight list, but you've already given a great starting point :)
I’m 5 mins into the video and you haven’t started talking about the topic. As general advice don’t worry about explaining yourself and get into the meat and potatoes right away. I’m ready for the series and hope you do well.
I only heard about a no buy year from your channel and after watching how you’re preparing for it I decided to try my own. It’s just a couple of weeks away now. Don’t listen to the negative comments, I have found people can have negative comments on just about anything. Most of them with no real insight into what you are trying to do. Keep up the great videos.
Love the different tiers idea! My main plan is to gamify my debt, reel in the impulses (no 3A amazon window shopping), read the books I already have and go to the library, and take my credit cards out of my wallet so I'm forced to consider what I'm buying because it's using 'real money' 🤣
Hello! Just a little encouragement from someone who watch’s a gazillion videos about n stuff like this! YOUR DOING GREAT! I subscribe to a lot of experienced influencers and your on solid ground! You go girl!😊
Growing ALL of your own food and livestock takes more than one year to set up. ...and a good amount of money for the land you are growing the food on and the tools for it. People's expectations are wild. The action of trying to consume as little as possible, only your needs is an excellent goal and impressive that youve stuck to it in the past.
i really hate how materialistic i have become. for the new year i want to try and focus more on my hobbies🎨🧶(i already have the supplies for, just haven't done anything with.) i really want to prove to myself that i can be happy and just fine without buying all this stuff. i also recently just cleaned out my closet, and i got rid of so many things, and it made me really see how much money i have wasted over the years.😱thanks for sharing a realistic plan!! this is the first video i've found that i can actually follow along with! 💕
I would love to see videos about how your perception changes and what you focus on (instead of materials or purchase-driven things). The positives of how you feel and how it influences you.
I'm at the start of the video and am triggered by the mad at a haircut (If not planning in general) See I get being smart and frugal (I'm all in!!) but I appreciate when people get haircuts or something done at the salon (doesn't have to be a cut or multiple visits a year) bc that's one of my parents career profession. Like I'd rather not worry that one of my parents might be without a job. 😟 Also I don't trust myself to cut my own hair well - power to you if you can but don't crap on others if they actually go to someone who's trained to do so. As for you dear I think your being very proactive and I thank you for it. Also I highly recommend if any people ask for gift ideas tell them books - cause then you can justify not buying them soo soo much more and you know you'd appreciate it.
Girl! People dont understand that these lists are personal😭 I myself just bought 2 bags and I definitely was like that’s it I need to do a no buy year for 2024 - so your video was so helpful!! I def am gonna do this as well
