I really love this thing and it really scratches that itch I have for a Plexi. :)

It bought a JMC 900 back in 1992, 100 watt, I sold it and regretted it, November 7/23, 10:00 am, I will be picking up my new Marshall SV20H Vintage, may Gods help I play like Dave in the afternoon.😊

The looks of the 20 watt Marshalls are even more appealing to me. They're like condensed nuggets of tone. I have the humble Origin and like its versatility as a clean pedal platform at home or a more sensibly volume old-school cranked rock amp for gigs.

Your affinity and enthusiasm for gear and the connection you clearly have with it is so inspiring. So much so, that it went a long way in convincing me I needed the Silver Jubilee, JCM 800 and the Plexi combo’s. Did I really need them? Of course not, I’m actually a pretty pathetic player. Do I have them and admire them anyhow? You bet!

I am an all blackface Fender guy these days... But I WISH I never sold my smallbox 50... Hard to really fall in love with anything Marshall now, just ---- they fall short of my old amp. Dave - love hearing you mention Rory. I worked for Gerry McAvoy for a good few years - you would love the Rory stories that he occasionally spills at 3am over a single-malt. Love your channel man. Bought a baby Crush12 on the back of your review. I have heart disease. If the worst happens, am gonna make sure you get my original issue Guv'Nor, my secret sauce, modded decades ago by the wizzos at Milton Keynes. Love you man - stay anchored to the inner-peace that comes with being an accomplished musician, bless you man.

I play modelers, solid state amps, and computer amp sims. I have to adjust my settings on everything, everyday. Not sure if it is the guitar or my ears, but nothing sounds the same from day to day. I want either the Marshall Studio Plexi or Marshall Origin. I have a Mesa/Boogie Blue Angel that does both the American/Clean (Fender 6V6) and the British/Crunch (Marshall/Vox EL-84) sound, but it needs to be repaired as it is out of service. One reason I like Solid State and Modelers/Amp Sims vs Tubes. The sound difference isn't that much of one, but the reliability difference is HUGE! and I just play at home, I am no desire to play in public or for anyone, I am more Science and Engineering / Computer minded than Artist/Creative minded, and I can't stand the fact that Tube/Valve amps need to be fixed all the time. What I want is a AMP 1 or AMP X from Blug Gutiar/ Thomas Blug. He cracked that problem finally that should have been done 40 years ago. Just sayin'.

You can buy a power conditioner to set the exact voltage going into your tube amps. It’ll make it more consistent. The only thing that will make it sound or feel different is if the tubes aren’t warmed up
@hugotyson308
@hugotyson308 3 года назад
Power conditioner won't unless it has a built in Voltage regulator. Furman Voltage regulators are +/- 5V at 120V or +/- 10V at 230/240V. Not good enough really as even a 2 V difference is noticeable.
@Slovy_
@Slovy_ 3 года назад
@@hugotyson308 thanks. I didn’t know all the details of what they do. I was also thinking that it doesn’t make a huge difference in modern tube amps unless your house has bad electricity I know older tube amps are more sensitive to voltage. But I’m sure Dave will do a some research and buy exactly what he needs.

Off Days with Valve amps! I mainly put this down to the AC voltage at the wall socket. Too high AC , they will sound harsh, brighter ,louder, tighter/stiffer and cleaner. Basically harder to play. Marshalls in my opinion sound best at 240V or less. My 100W hand-wired Barwatt Super PA clone (With mods: Super lead, Super Bass and Super PA channels) sounds at its best around 235 VAC. Anything over 242V and its starting to sound nasty, and not in a good way! My AC voltage can vary quite a bit in the space of a few minutes. Even a change of 2 V is noticeable. Lowest reading on my Voltage meter was 225V and the highest was 251V.Anything over 245V and I don't bother turning the amp on as I know its not going to sound ideal! A Rig Rundown with Angus Young's tech about Angus's gear states that Marshalls are designed to sound best at 234V .Angus Runs his at 236 for a slightly tighter feel/sound. To do this he uses a super expensive voltage regulator. A 4000W Kikusui. Accurate voltage regulation to +/- 1.2 Volts . They make smaller units. I'm thinking of saving for a 1000W unit which would cover my needs. That would run two 100W Vale amps. With these units you can dial in any AC voltage, anywhere in the world. Much better than a Furman, but at least twice as expensive! Bonamassa uses them also.

Hey Dave, just a head's up, leaving an amp in standby for too long i.e. a few hours, can cause cathode poisoning due to interference resistance, when the cathode is fully heated but no current is flowing, it would cause a noise increase and shorter tube life with less gain. I'm building my own Plexi after I finish the 2204 I'm building now, I love Marshalls ;)

I love the "just breaking" valve amp sound. The practicalities however make this more than a tad difficult. I have a 15 watt Epiphone valve junior which is I think a good sounding amp but the volume you need to get that break up is utterly deafening. You are a lucky man (or woman) if your neighbours are prepared to accept that level of abuse.

One of those special connection amps for me is my Fender Bassbreaker 45. I remember when it was sitting in the shop and I plugged into it with a 90's Gibson SG Special with P94's. I was super into Black Sabbath at the time. I remember putting it at its lowest wattage, cranked it up, and played War Pigs. I reveled in the glorious rock overdrive that it was producing. First big amp I ever bought, and it's still probably my favorite amp in my entire collection. The stuff I'm playing now supersedes the abilities of it mainly because I play lots of metal (Megadeth, Metallica, Thrash in general) so it doesn't have enough gain unless you have it on 10 with a boost (I use a Boogie Mark IV mainly). But when it comes to stuff that I do with my band, the only thing that can replace my Fender is my Marshall DSL 50.

Amazing tones and playing today! Dave have you got a brown box voltage regulator? if you do not know what is it, it's a voltage regulator and that can keep what ever voltage you set it to going into your Amp, so if your amp is biased for 120 volts, you can set the brown box to 120 volts and that will forever be the voltage going into your amp wherever you are, and that might help with the inconsistency of valve amps and the brown box is also designed to work on solid state amps :)

I came close to returning this amp cause I thought it was just too much of a battle to dial in a good tone, but at the last minute just couldn't bring myself to return it. Dave just made me feel better about my decision! I played a small gig with it this month, the headroom concern is true, once your annoying drummer starts playing too loud if you're already at break up volume and you want to go to 11, where can you go? Nowhere, exactly.

Only downside is that it's fixed for -20db on attenuated out - I also own a simple Carl's Custom Guitars Speaker Soak where you can control the level, and in some cases it's more useful - if you want to play clean, you can dial attentuation back, if you want to crank the amp, you bring more in. I have a Silver Jubilee mini (20 Watt) and CE-1 pedal. And if I buy an SV20 head is enough cleanish headroom to use in stereo with Jubilee at full cleanish volume (like John uses.Jubilee at Output Master at 8-9 , pre Gain 8) ? Because the Jubilee is very loud in this setting and can they work together in rig?Well, I'd love to watch a video like this :). Thanks Dave for all videos, and for your channel. Hey Dave, Question about gigin with an amp: I have also seen your review of the Marshall Origin 20 Head (and others amps), I have seen your video's about your Frusciante inspired Pedalboard and the Zoom G5N (which you love and hate) and how simular it sounded to your pedal board. And you said you always use the breakup of your pedal (or Zoom G5N) If I understood this right. So what would you advise to use for an RHCP cover band for giging? A Boss katana or other modelling amp, or only a Zoom G5N without an Amp? Or A Zoom G5N with an Amp? And if an Amp, what Amp would you reconmand? At the moment I have a Fender Mustang III V2 100 watt modeling amp, and it gets me pretty close to the Frusciante tones and it's problably looud enough to gig with. BUT, Would for example an Marshall Origin 20 Head with a CAB be a worth to upgrade to? It looks nicer. But what would you advice be to a RHCP coverband getting ready for Giging? We really would appriciate your advice here as an Experienced Fruciante and Giging player. Thans you so much already.
