Every time I watch these videos I realize the difference between American minimalism and European minimalism. I don't consider myself a minimalist by a long shot, but still own way less than any of the American minimalists do. I don't think it's wrong in any way, I just like reflecting over it.
@milamolinari5229

I feel the same. And to describe a house with 1500 sqf as small - that's a bigger house in Europe. We have houses with 800 sqf, this is small... 🙂

May I ask you what the differences are between American minimalism and European minimalism? Thank you. :)
@JoyfulLivingLinda
@JoyfulLivingLinda Месяц назад
@@aimeebrimmer7068I don't know if there's any actual difference since each person defines minimalism differently. It's just an observation on my part. People that call themselves minimalists in Europe generally have more minimal homes, whereas minimalists in the US generally require more stuff to manage the everyday life.
@dp2404
@dp2404 Месяц назад
@aimeebrimmer7068 i'll tell you the difference between an american hoarder and a european one. Europeans have way smaller houses and they could never afford to have a full room of "stuff" that they are not able to use. I recently heard the difference between a serial hoarder vs a serial decorator. With the latter the clutter is on the walls instead of on the floor. 😂 it perfectly describes thebeuropean hoarder😅

Tip for socks, give each family member a sock bag to put dirty socks in. Wash, dry and return them in the bag. In fact, have two bags, so they can use clean socks from a bag and put into the other bag for washing, then switch. Saves socks getting lost in sleeves and pant legs, and saves sorting.

I smile when you refer to a small home. 😊 We have 1200 sq feet. We have lived here for 40 years. We moved in when our children were 4,6 & 8. It was like a mansion because we moved out of a home that was 850 sq feet. Kids are gone, but we have eight grandchildren. 😊 Hubby is a hoarder, but a very good man. Although he is unorganized, he knows where everything is. He is a hard worker & can fix anything. I like simplified living & hubby believes we should keep things for “someday”. Last I looked, “someday” is not on the calendar. LOL. Any advice for a person that has pretty much given up on decluttering, etc? I turned 70 this year & although I desire a tidy home, I find myself wanting to do less & less. There have been times when I find myself in the mood for decluttering, but it is getting less & less. Maybe you are not the person to ask for advice. Maybe this a question I need to ask a therapist. I love your channels & enthusiasm.

Similar age here! I don't want to leave my children with the burden of dealing with my stuff when I'm gone, so that gives me the impetus to carry on. What helped us was moving three years ago. We didn't exactly downsize because our previous family home of 40 years was quite small. Our new house is just over 800 sq feet. But moving really focuses the mind on what you want to keep and what you want to dispose of. There is no magic formula - you just keep up a slow but steady routine of decluttering. If I waited until I felt in the mood, I'd never start. Just 15 minutes a day can accomplish so much. Your hubby sounds like mine, bless him. He took some persuading about letting go, and the folly of keeping things for "someday", but eventually came round. Can he give his tools (or whatever he is holding onto) to the children or grandchildren? He can then borrow them when he needs them. Best wishes from the UK.

There are other channels that deal specifically with your problem, but also Dawn's Take Your House Back program is very helpful because you have hundreds of videos with no commercials. I played them all to motivate me Took me 9 months. Once I really decluttered much of my stuff and began keeping a sparkling clean kitchen, my DH began to get on board. I still have more to do but what an improvement! Don't give up. Try focusing on keeping the kitchen and bedroom clutter free and hopefully he will come up with new solutions about where to keep his clutter. Hugs to you!

I'll be 69 at the end of this year. I've had two big cancer scares. It makes you evaluate life. I only have one child - she is 30 and I don't want to burden her with my junk when I'm gone. About two years ago I started the process of decluttering. I didn't have tons of clutter but after living 35 years in the same small house "things" just tend to add up. I have a friend who donates her spare time working in a Hospice Store (like a thrift store but all the proceeds goes to help patients on hospice care) - knowing that the things I donated really helped the needy helped me let go of unneeded "stuff". Things like a spare computer monitor & printer that we were keeping "just in case". What I realized is that most of the "spare" stuff we were keeping would be old and outdated by the time we needed it. It was nuts to clutter up our few closets with this "stuff" even if it was good stuff - so I started donating to the Hospice store. I've slowly decluttered - donated another bag last week!! Sometimes I'll pick a category - for example linens - I went through every table cloth, towel, sheet, blanket, etc - and kept the bare essentials - donated the extra to a local animal shelter. My house is much, much more minimal now and cleaning is so much easier. I still have a little more to do but I'm much happier now. RU-vid channels like Dawn's has helped me realize that I can live with much less inventory and be happy about it. Good luck to you.

I'm 72 and have a garage full of stuff that needs to be decluttered (grandkids toys, boxes my son and his wife are "temporarily" storing, clothes--- you get the idea). I, too, lose my desire sometimes to tackle the job, but I've come up with a game plan. I recently bought a few items (bins, labels, markers, etc.) and I've decided to latch onto one of those times when I feel the urge to get in there and just do it. My plan is to do a small area at a time so I don't get burnt out. I feel that when the target area is done I'll find satisfaction in what I've done and how it looks and will feel motivated to continue. I'm certainly going to give it my best shot! I wish you the best.

@@supergran1000 Just fyi, you are giving your children a great gift by downsizing now. I had to deal with my parents’ house: 13 rooms that didn’t LOOK cluttered but held an enormous amount of stuff that had to be sorted, sold, donated, recycled & (a small amount) trashed. Bc my siblings travel globally for work it all fell to me. Took me TWO YEARS of traveling up to the old homestead every weekend I could & all my vacation days. My father’s family came to the US in 1638 & kept everything! I donated huge amounts to museums & archives; while it was great to read letters fr 1810, it was a lot of work for me. I’m now decluttering my own space ferociously bc I refuse to burden my kids like that.

I recently purchased new towels, and with that, I discovered a new laundry system. We primarily wear dark clothes in our house. I bought denim/light navy colored towels. Every evening after we all shower, I toss all our towels and daily clothes in the washer and then in the dryer first thing in the morning. It has cut down on so many loads of laundry and everything stays clean! Once a week, I have a load of reds/pinks and a load of whites. I never have multiple piles of laundry to do now.

Lolol Our house is two bedroom and one bath with a kind of mostly useable full basement that takes on water when it rains heavily. We had three children, so we made a wall in the master bedroom when they were kids so we could kind of have three bedroom spaces. Lol You do what you gotta do! We originally had the three kids in a two bedroom 750 sq ft house. My son slept on the couch. I was glad when we did get the larger space. No matter the size of the space, workable organization is so important! Even when i lived out of the trunk of my car, organization was key. 😂

God love the boy scouts because some young man did a full blown research project on the topic and the result was no, they do not make anything dry faster as they are not heavy enough to truly push heavy wet clothes, jeans or towels apart and the moral of the story was to not over dry or overfill your machines.

I think that acrylic bins in Europe isn't what you have, 'couse they aren' t durable, so I switched to more elastic ones, although they are not seethrough. We use also slading steel shelfs under sink, 'couse they are very durable & can take up a lot weight of higine/cleaning products. Love your videos. You have lovely house & family. Wish you all the best. Thank You for sharing all your knowledge :)

I always need to laugh when you are talking about 1500 square feet as a small house. I live in the netherlands and with about 1300 square feet, we have a house that is average in size. We don't have a barn, garage or basement for storage. We have a small shed of 80 square feet where we store our bikes. I also grew up in a 1300 square feet home with 2 adults and 4 kids. This is never been a problem and it didnt feel small at all. I really like your video's and it is fun to see how different the American standards are.

Even for American standards, it can change a lot from region to region, and of course, over time. I grew up in a similar area to where Dawn lives, but I'm in my 60s. We had a house that was just under 1000 square feet, with three bedrooms, and there were two adults and four kids and a dog living there. It was one of the larger houses in the neighborhood and we thought it was pretty spacious. Not long ago, a single mother with one kid told me that she and her son lived in a tiny house, just like me and my husband. Hers was 1500 square feet, mine was 625.

Thanks for sharing all your ideas Dawn! I watched the video when you organized your spices and tweaked it a little. Using a paper cutter, I trimmed the white space at the top of all the labels so the name of each spice is visible when placed on a riser type organizer. Now all the names can be seen. I took a picture for you to see but I don’t see a way to share it here.

While we use mesh bags for items like bras, we have started using them for other purposes. We have people in our house who wear similar looking socks and underwear, but in different sizes. To ensure who’s is whose, we put each person’s underwear and/or socks into a mesh bag and throw them in the same load. When we take them out, we know which bag belongs to each person and they quickly and easily get put away.

Hi Dawn! 👋😃 1st, a big THANK YOU to you and Diana for your videos! 🙏 2nd, I saw your video about having to wash clothes that were stored in bins in the basement because they smelled musty after water got in the basement. Have you ever thought about trying space saver bags to seal out the dampness? I recently tried them for packing. They're so easy to use and work so well! It might prevent the musty smell in the future and save you from having to wash everything. ❤

I recently made a basket in my pantry for s’mores stuff, with marshmallows, graham crackers, Reese’s thins, and our reusable roasting sticks (ooh, I should throw in a pack of wet wipes too!) so it’s all ready to go for fall! 🥳 I also recently added one of those tall, narrow storage bins for our toilet paper in the bathrooms (and already was using one for my cleaner and paper towel roll in the same cabinet). I don’t like fumbling with the plastic wrap around the TP when a roll is needed, and also don’t like the rolls sitting on the bare cabinet (sorry if that’s weird). I love those bins so I find myself looking around for other places to use them! I have one in my fridge for sandwich fixings that the kids can just grab and take to and from the table at lunch time. It makes it easier and quicker than grabbing it all separately and taking trips back and forth. A big part of minimalism, is minimizing effort! 😅

But I still have the attic which its way to hot to deal with now so that'll be my fall project and the basement which will be my next spring project because we are gonna get new shelves and new storage containers and have some type of order. Great tips! Thank you so much for sharing. The idea of hiding the toys behind the sofa is brilliant. We usually take the toys our kids want to play with that day into our living room and do a 5 minute pick up before bed. It never ceases to surprise me, how quickly any room in our house can be put back to order, when the inventory is low. Currently I have to be a little more diligent about laundry and my flat surfaces. Even just letting one glas of water sit there, seems to be an open invitation to miscellaneous items to pop out of nowhere and group themselves together.
