We have 2 feet of snow in the forecast and I'm down bigtime with the flu, so my teenage son is tasked with everything from gassing up vehicles and the snowblower to firewood duty. Thankfully, the food we grew, foraged, and preserved took one major worry out of the equation! This is why we prepare!

I hope you feel better soon! I take flu seriously as my dear husband had complication from flu 5 years that has left him with permanent heart damage, but he survived when his doctors felt he wouldn’t. Please take good care of yourself.

When my husband used to hunt, I would can deer stew meat because I don’t like deer burger. It tastes just like beef! I would make stews, soups, or just meat and gravy for mashed potatoes and biscuits! I miss that meat! I used to go to the coast and buy albacore tuna from the fishing boats and would can it. It tasted like chicken! So good!

Thanks for showing your purchased canned items! I just don’t have the weather or room to grow surplus tomatoes, pumpkins, corn, and I am so jealous of all the homesteaders with shelves and shelves of those things. I believe we need to maximize what we’re good at and supplement where we need to! Just managing homestead style food storage and stock rotation is a big feat. This is a great reminder you don’t need to produce it all to feel like a successful homesteader.

What an amazing tour. Wishing I was a new neighbor just moving in and you stop by with a welcome basket. The ciders and plum jam look amazing. I wish I could live with you for a week I could learn so many new things. You also gave me ideas for next year ... to hang my cut off pepper plants. When season changed and a few were still on and not ripe I just left the plant go but I only lost a few peppers maybe 4. You are an amazing woman, mother, and teacher you have taught me a lot that at 51 I'm going to start attempting. I asked my kids for a pressure canner for Christmas so your videos come January will be watched and enjoyed greatly. Thank you.

Will be canning dried beans this week for convenience. Beautiful pantry to nourish your beautiful family!

Many blessings to you and your family! Having a pantry like this saves so much time and hassle. All five of us just went through Covid. During that first week, I was so grateful that we could just pull cans of the shelves for dinner and lunch. Lots of chicken soup with turmeric that way, stews, more soup and elderberry juice from the freezer, was made into toddy’s. We are only 5, but we do the same thing you do. It saves time and money, and you know that what you serve is good and healthy. We also have food allergies, so access to safe foods is amazing. I really wish I had access to cold storage like you have, but it’s too hot here in the south. Instead I have an extra refrigerator, which doesn’t give me a lot of free space, but still works. I do have one advantage you don’t. We can and do grow vegetables year round, since the temperatures rarely goes below the mid 30’s. The only fruit we have access to all years round, is orange though, but it is a privilege always having access to oranges. This weekend they are promising 80F, so I will be lucky if my plants don’t bolt, but I covered them up so hopefully they won’t. Anyway. That’s for another great video.

The man on the bike is jealous of the man that can drive... We are all in different places in our lives but that doesn't mean other's blessings can't be celebrated. They worked hard to grow, raise and preserve their food for their large family. That has nothing to do with people who don't have the same.

I was just typing a comment saying I just wish she could mention what else she would do with the freeze dried things if she didn’t have a freeze dryer. There’s plenty of people to watch who don’t freeze dry so you can find other options but I wish she could’ve mentioned, as she clearly had other methods of preserving those items for the many years before she got the freeze dryer! Not at ALL bitter just more of an editorial thought 🤣🤣 like if she said it I wouldn’t have to go look at someone else to say it

I look at my store canned stuff and when it gets close to date I re pressure can to extend life of food and replacing anything we eat . Having shelves would make my keeping a eye on dates of my foods, now I try and pick a date on callender and do it all every month. Your pantry is what I will be wanting to mimic once I get it set up

Great to see all the different methods of preserving and types of food. One method I use a lot is cooking ground beef on a cast iron pan, saving the rendered tallow in jars, and then dehydrating the meat inn the oven. Its let me avoid having to buy an extra 3 freezers, and the tast/texture is @ 95% as good as the ground beef in say a Mt House meal, so if you can't afford a freeze drier, look into it. I have meat thats over 1.5 yr old still like the day it was made all you need is a ziploc bag to store it, but of course you could use jars, mylar bags etc.

Great video. My pantry is basically a closet with 3 shelves. It is maxed out. We have a basement but it is damp. Several years ago we tried to store potatoes - they did not last long. This was a bad year in gardening for us due to critters. I guess they are really hungry. Deer have never jumped the fence before. Even they chewed the potato plants down which we never had that issue before. I was working longer hours and my cousin came down with lymes disease which he was having a hard time getting around. Definitely got to work on new fencing plus more around the property if we want to grow anything. I grow all my herbs in pots and then dyhrate them. When I open up the jar of herbs to use, the smell is awesome. I did some foraging as well. If things go better next year, I plan to slow down at work and focus more of foraging, growing more vegetables (I already have alot of my seeds for next year), growing more herbs, berries, etc.

You pantry looks great. 🥰Like so many other pantries with beautifully canned glass product. But what about protecting the shelves with a security strip so jars don't fall out if there is ever an earth shaking. We are seeing nature shaking in places we have not before. Earthquakes are rare yet. So my thoughts go to that extra step of protecting our wonderful storage areas. May never need it yet a simple step to keep jars on their shelves in case...a shaking would happen for any reason. Something all of us need to do to keep them safe. 🙂

Pregnancy suits you, God bless the one coming. Root fruits are so good to have. I have a recipe of mashed root fruits that is so good and have a nice color. For your family size it would probably take 3 celeriac, 3 swede/rutabaga, 6 big carrots, 6 red beetroots and 12 potatoes. Peel and cut the root fruits in the order it is written and put into a big pan with some boiling salty water or bouillon (I prefer the latter). Let cook until tender. Drain the root fruits but keep some of the water/bouillon in a bowl/can beside. Mash the root fruits with salt, pepper and a big chunk of butter (lard would probably work fine to) and add a bit of the water/bouillon to get the consistence you like. Perfect to sausage or side pork.
