My parents are some of the richest people at Harvard. They just might be rich in a different sense of the word than you were thinking. They've raised me to value things like love, relationships, family over things like money.

David Chaparro depends on your definition of rich, but he’s middle class. Rich would be upper class. Anyway regardless of how much money he has, he is rich because of his experiences not because of his material possessions

I think that is pure ideology because the reason he was able to have those experiences was that he had a nice family with enough money that they didn't get stressed out about getting food or shelter and were able to sort out smaller problems to give their children good memories of their childhood.

This is beautiful but also makes me kinda depressed. My parent's weren't monetarily rich either, but they also never gave an upbringing full of "cultural" experiences. My childhood memories are full of mundanity, of sitting in front of the tv, eating junk food and waiting for my parents to come home from work. That's not my parents fault I guess, they were working so hard to put a roof over my head. But I guess videos like this do inspire me to make sure I give my children an upbringing they deserve. Regardless of money I think the most important thing in life is to make sure you're actually living, rather than surviving.

To paraphrase an African proverb, we stand on the shoulders of each generation before us. If your parents are working hard to keep a roof over your head, it's probably with memories in mind of when their parents couldn't or wouldn't. So don't worry. Thanks to the internet, you can fill any gap you need. And while John appreciates the things his parents did for him, don't be surprised if your kids think cultural outings and camping trips are boring, smh. I know my kids wish they could just stay on the internet all day, smh.

I'm blushing and slightly choked up. But the thing is this: John and his siblings are so easy to love. I think about the part toward the end of Charlotte's Web where Charlotte is handing off her egg sac, knowing she's about to die. She says of it, "This egg sac is my 'magnum opus'...my great work, the finest thing I have ever made." And that's true. PS You do still have to do some chores, buddy. Sorry.

I come from a single mother, where she had to sell family wedding rings just to scrap by, and food was sparse in the winters. As siblings we used to sleep in the living room because we couldn’t afford to heat the whole house and toilet only ever barely worked. I get it kid, your parents took you to zoos and library’s, you’re so thankful. 🐍

I beat myself up because i don't like my current situation and i am not sure what my next move is. but i do know i want two things out of life, to help others, and to experience life with loved ones.

watching this the day after my high school graduation, really got me thinking of how blessed as I was, just like you. because I tell you, we had the same childhood. my dad was a teacher, and we would visit libraries, museums, and just spend days together during the summer. and I am glad that we bot got the chance to experience that awesome life. But I do believe that a lot of the things you said were very true, and I am glad that as high up in college mastery as it goes basically, that you still have this mindset. a lot of high school students think that money is the main reason to get a job, but you said it correct, money is a tool, not a prized possession. and I fully support you in that thinking process. so glad I found your channel! congrats on making it to Harvard!

A family of 5 that gets to take off whenever they want just to take you to sports or museums? Cottage on the beach? Traveling the world? Tf yes you’re rich. Both of my parents worked 2 jobs. Hell when I was young my mom would take me with her wherever she was cleaning that day. My parents bout be a pillow from wall mart and some Vick’s for college. I had to go to school on a wrestling scholarship because if I didn’t my ass couldn’t afford college.
@Two_Tone_

Alejandro Juarez-Rea lots of families getting middle class incomes of about $50,000 can afford to do all of that, the only difference is maybe the accommodation and how luxurious it is, what type of car they rented, and also how exactly do you define ‘rich’ is it someone that earns six digits or someone who gets borderline one million and up, because to be honest most families can take their kids to sports events and museums, I can understand if you may not be able to afford all of this but that doesn’t make them rich that just says that your household may be on the poorer side of the spectrum, but you gotta find ways around that

yep, absolutely. Like, him having those extremely well educated and available parents that he does, that's a huge advantage to kids who actually come from a working class background, for example, whose parents aren't able to give their kids the same opportunities or wouldn't even know where to begin to nurture their academic talents. idk I know he acknowledges that he comes from a middle class background but the video rubs me the wrong way, maybe because it kind of came off as defensive in the beginning.

John: Yes, you are truly rich-- in family, in love, in experiences, etc. However, you still seem sad, to me, as a person with so much. Happiness is a well balanced life-- having your needs met, your relationships accepted, your accomplishments acknowledged and the faith that you know your purpose in this life. It was hard to hear that you were not pleased with a 4.0 at Harvard. I didn't understand your point, until you explained. There still seems to be something missing. I have to tell you that I subscribed to your channel because I felt I needed you in my life. I'm not really sure how or why but, I do. John, I love you (which I don't say enough) for who you are, for sharing yourself with me and for offering your incites to me, to better my life. You don't know anything about me, but you are making me better each week. Thanks, Mark.
@jeanjohn1728
@jeanjohn1728 6 лет назад
I think that thing missing is his need to be a better and better person, and his current self isn't good enough. I have to say this is my attitude too and all though i'm not as driven as John (as much as i'd like to be), it is an attitude which is needed to do great things. I just think if he didn't have 'something missing' i.e. if he didn't keep striving to be the best he can be, he wouldn't be as successful as he is today. It's a bit paradoxical , I don't know, just my thoughts and interpretation.

Hi John Fish, Yes, of course you are a lucky guy because your parents groomed you well and you too didn’t waste the opportunity. The way you speak is nice & listenable and I believe your followers are increasing day by day because of this reason. Post more videos ! Who is John fish apart from studies and sports? If any ?

I really hate these types of videos, and don't get me wrong, I love all of your videos. But, as a kid who was raised in Iraq and the war that filled a large space of my memories and the sounds of explosion the covered the sounds my favorite cartoon characters that I used to watch. These types of videos just call my old memory and bring them back to life. They hate me and I certainly hate them. I remember that I couldn't get coloring pencil to color my flower or even getting my favorite candy bar. And I can't forget how we couldn't go anywhere because you didn't know that if you went to to some place, would you come back one piece or killed because of a religion or something you didn't choose. Anyway, we are better now, but I can't watch any these kind of video without feeling my heart pulling me inside like a black hole. I'm sorry If I was so dramatic and I really like your videos, keep up!

Okay so: I’ve followed your brother on tumblr for about 3 years, and I always thought his last name was so interesting. About a month ago, I came across your video about reading a book each week. I instantly noticed your last name and I thought: “Woah! That’s so cool! It’s just like that tumblr guy!” Fast forward to now, and I just discovered that you two are brothers. *mind blown*

yeah but look at the ratio of poor black people but "rich in knowledge" in Ivy Schools. I don't think this is a one dimension perspective here. You are a white non poor kid ( me too ) and this is a richness that weighs in the balance too. I mean your parents are amazing and I wish every one of us had ones like them and this is still an inspiring video, I just wanted to point that out

I think the interest in the Harvard tittle it's at least for me that I'm from a country that the majority of people enter the word "poor" so I think there's no one in my country who has gone there and it can be a dream for a lot of us but like it's almost imposible due to language, money, social appearance, etc so at least for me Harvard is something very platonic although I wish it wasn't but yes i just wanna quickly share my history here

wow John, I was impressed with a high quality editing in the beginning of this video (with the drone and the shots of your siblings etc.). I have been going back to watch all your videos from the beginning and the improvement in the quality is apparent to me. Aside that, there is nothing more important than your family, community, network of support, and I admire you for talking about topics that are not so popular on here, yet are the foundation in life.

Soo ... this guy. I don't hate him, I actually kinda like him. I have nothing against him personally. I've seen his other videos and he clearly works hard and pushes himself to be his best version. But I am a little annoyed just at the fact that, even if I work twice as hard as he does, I wouldn't even come close to what he has. I struggle, not to get good grades or pass hard classes, but to somehow manage beign a poor immigrant in a (lets face it) still discriminatory country and someone who's parents no matter how intelligent (such a docotr as a mother) were downgraded for legal reasons and pure necessity. I adore my parents as well and love them for working as hard as they do just to feed me and ensure that I have a good enough education but I can't help but be frustrated at the thought that no matter how hard I work a lucky guy from a stable middle class family will succeed more than me. This doesn't mean that I will give up because I will do the absolute opposite, but it's just not very fair. Again, I have nothing against this one specific kid, I'm just commenting what I feel about this whole situation.
@imjustchannelingmyemotions2044
I know where you are coming from. Your situation seems more unfortunate, but I have friends who aren’t restricted by birth, classes, or immigration. They are restricted by culture. They are Hispanic heritage. I remember I asked my friend what college she wanted to go to, and she said community college. I told her she could do better and strive for something that is worth her. She didn’t know what these good colleges or jobs were and when she asked her family, they completely cut her off and told her to stay in the city for the rest of her life and take care of the kids. Sorry if this story doesn’t relate to what you said, but I just envy John’s environment and the welcoming culture to do whatever he dreamed. Of course, he worked hard, but there is no doubt some advantage. But in know, with enough determination you can get there. If it’s not you, it will be your children or children’s children. Keep it up! Your comment really motivated me to try harder too.
@aliciaochoa4275
@aliciaochoa4275 6 лет назад
I’m just channeling my emotions I'm Hispanic (born and raised in Cuba) and live in Miami, not the good part. I've worked extremely hard, from pulling all-nighters, learning a new language by myself, fighting the system and people's expectations of me, and I still struggled to get to where I am (a vocational Highschool. Here, I will be able to graduate with a CNA and a LPN and work while I study in any college with an Accelerated Associates Degree in Nursing. It just kind of sucks that I had to fight so hard to get where I am and will be, while people with similar situations to this guy would never have too.

John's mom here. Huge respect to you, Alicia. I hear what you're saying and you have a point.
@Ed-bf3fe
@Ed-bf3fe 6 лет назад
Hello John's mom, Alicia does not have a point, she has a bad mentality. Alicia, your situation is not an issue, your mentality is. You claim that, because John was fortunate enough to start from a better position than yourself, it is simply not fair. You are suggesting that John should have to suffer like you, after all, it would only be fair ... right? You are selfish. You have gained the cancerous mentality that because you went through hardship, everybody else must go through hardship. That is "fairness" in your eyes. Change your mentality.
@aliciaochoa4275
@aliciaochoa4275 6 лет назад
Ed, I understand how you might come to this conclusion, but I think you misunderstood what I meant. I don't believe that fairness would be for everyone to experience harships. I believe fairness would be when no one has too. John is very fortunate to have such a supportive and loving family that is also financially stable. I am more than happy where I am now, but you cannot deny that it is not very fair for me to have worked so much more to get here due to a situation that I had no control over. John is lucky, like many other Americans, but you cannot tell me that I have a bad mentality when I'm simply expressing my opinion in a prominent problem that affects so many people. And my situation is an issue becuase no amount of positive mentality will erase all the racism, sexism, and prejudices that I have to face daily. Thank you for opinion.

I think he's just too "perfect." by that I mean he's the best kid a parent would ask for - independent, humble, mature, etc. he'soff-puttingly perfect, but I think that says more about our society than himself. we need more people like him such that personalities like him don't seem so out of this world.
