@@zverispetras For one thing, you can produce large prints that are indistinguishable from those from ff sensors. Then there's the superior image stabilization that lets you use long lenses handheld. And, finally, no one but the perfect-bokeh fetishists care at all that the bokeh from mft sensors is not always as creamy as that from ff. Of course, if you understand how bokeh is actually produced, then you can adapt your shooting to produce pleasing bokeh with any sensor.

I wish they would bring back the GX-9 body with the 26mp image sensor. I would be all over it. I had the GX-85 with the 20mm f 1.7 Lumix prime. I couldn't put it down. It was fun!

I’ve had everything from Pentax to Fuji to Leica…and I was one of those “never m43!l people that thought the fotos would look like something from a 2004 mobile phone. I purchased the LUMIX gx85/80 kit while it was on sale. My only regret is that I didn’t try m43 sooner. What an incredible system. I added the lumix 20mm 1.7 ll and then turn on the L Monochrome setting…the heavens open up and the angels start singing! I’ve heard from many people that Leica helped Panasonic create the L monochrome profile and I believe it, looks very very similar to the BW on my Leica. Honestly, my Leica has just sat in its bag ever since I got the lumix. If there’s anyone else out there on the fence about trying m43, I say don’t wait. You’re missing out on a great experience and a lot of fun. The photos have a nice natural look to them. Something that’s missing from many cameras in 2024, they all look too sharp, too sterile with flat feeling. M43 and lumix fotos have great rendering to them.

Welcome to the world of MFT. Don't let these RU-vidrs saying MFT is dead fool you. They're VERY WRONG! Also, I'm a bit surprised you didn't know anything about the LUMIX GX series of cameras and the Panasonic Leica set of lenses. Anywho, the reason why you felt this camera was similar to the Leica Q is because Panasonic with Leica designed the Q and the Q2. The camera that's most like the Q's is the GX9. I love that camera so much I decided to purchase it again after selling it last year instead of purchasing a Q2 or M10. As Shane told you the image quality of the files look very similar to Leica DNG's. I did an experiment for a month on IG hashtagging photo's from the GX9 as though they came from an M10 and people who shoot with the M10 regularly didn't realise the photos were from the GX9. Basically, proving a point I've been making for years. Leica camera bodies don't have an advantage over any other manufacturers camera bodies but maybe their lenses or better yet M mount lenses across the board do. I'm primarily a Fujifilm X-Pro3 shooter but 50% of my lenses are M mount and I have them adapted across my entire kit. A kit which includes the LUMIX GX9, Leica CL mirrorless not film, Fujifilm X-Pro3 and the LUMIX S5. Shooting with the same Voigtlander M mount lenses on my Leica CL and the LUMIX GX9, the GX9 is a superior camera in everyway and the raw files as well as the jpegs coming out of it are better than what I get from the CL. I'll end with this, those who call themselves street photographers could save themselves a LOT of money and headache if they invested in the LUMIX GX series of cameras with a good set of lenses. They'd find themselves having lots of fun with a powerful camera and more money in their pockets. And with that, I'm gone.
@leslumieres1237
@leslumieres1237 14 дней назад
I completely agree. I was more than surprised when I got the hang of the GX-series. One remark I do not agree with: you state/presume that Leica M lenses are better than those made for the Leica R's? As a photographer who has been using both the R's and the M's for decades, I can say that R-glass is equally good and probably even better.

I bought back into MFT again. Bought the GX80 too. Love the camera, paired with the 20mm shoot in 1:1 aspect ratio, just become i found it fun. The highlights blow out easily as you state correctly. I love the fact that you can take Lumix picture profiles and adjust then accordingly. Additional the image quality is great, rich good colours. Probably the best alternative for the overhyped Fujifilm x100v/vi (they haven't changed the lens much there) and it is so budget friendly. A steal

The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 is a really nice combination on the GX series cameras. It doesn't say "Leica" on it, but it's among the sharpest lenses in the system, and it's *tiny*. My GX9 with that lens fits very comfortably in a jacket pocket. The only downside is slow autofocus.

I’ve been using this camera for many years now. It really is a great walkabout, everyday carry. Most recently, I’ve been using a Laowa 17mm f1.8 on this. It is manual focus, but the hyperfocal distance is essentially a few meters out to infinity at f5.6. So aperture prioty, and auto iso and you just have to frame. I’ve also taken to have the camera bracket 3 at 1 stop over and under. Very fast way to work.

I bought a used one of these several years ago and still use it regularly. Although I’m sure that Leica glass is excellent, I really love pairing it with vintage glass (Pentax in my case). That sensor is a perfect match for capturing the look of the “vintage” light coming through those older lenses and imbedding it into the raw files. No need to resort to goofy vintage filters in post. Just tweak exposure and go.

@@supersflallifications1783 There are a lot of inexpensive adapters available from B & H, etc. In my case, I use an adapter from Fotodiox called the Stretch, which is a bit more expensive, but, in addition to adapting the lens to the camera, it also provides a rotating adjustment that allows for some limited macro focus (it works very well and I use it a lot more than I thought I would). The stretch also comes with three magnetic drop-in ND filters that saves me from having to mess with screw on ND's.

I moved from Nikon FF to this camera. This is a great casual camera for street and event photography. I have since purchased a G9. The colors from the 20mp G9 sensor have a lot more depth. When I shoot the GX, I usually dial up B&W. The PL 15 is a great small lens. Also in the category are the Oly 17 and Pana 20. Sharp, tiny, easily pocketable. Don't sleep on the kit 12-32, however. Tiny, sharp, quick, stabilized. The ONLY downside to the zoom is the max aperture. Ideal for a day shooting on the street.

I got a GX85 as a present from the States with the 20mm f1.7 after reading about it previously on the late, Daved Thorpe's, channel. I have large hands and use a L bracket with it that makes it a lot easier to shoot one handed with a wrist strap. My other camera is a D700 and you couldn't get two cameras that are polar opposites. However, the results are glorious and they compliment each other. Good to see that Framelines has is still going strong from when you made this video two years ago. Enjoy the rest of your day.

This was my first - and until a couple of weeks ago, only - interchangeable-lens camera, bought I don't know when. Launch year or soon after. Going to be honest, I started to resent it for the poor light gathering and sharpness of the pictures I got; though I think my problems were that I was trying to shoot wildlife in gloomy forests rather than street photography, and I was using the slightly decrepit 45-200mm mega OIS lens. Said camera bought a couple of weeks ago is an Olympus E-M1X with the 300mm prime lens. It's lush. But the curious thing is that now my GX80 isn't being pushed to be a stayfari whizz, I'm starting to use and appreciate it a lot more for what it can do. It helps that I've dived into photography on youtube, and been pleasantly surprised (and a bit reproached) by all the videos like this, as recently as a year ago, where it keeps making new fans.

This camera is probably among the best values for street photographers as the 2-lens kit is now $600, plus the camera has stabilization, which makes it a more versatile and a better value over some of it's rivals. Considering getting one of these to accompany my FF camera system (for when I don't want to lug around a large camera and lenses -- in some cases, even taking a FF body and a travel zoom is overkill for some things and that's where I think MFT has the upper hand over APS-C, plus some APS-C camera systems are getting to be as big and heavy as FF cameras these days)

I disagree. I’ve been using the GX85 for the past 6 years, and while it does have some strengths, it is absolutely hopeless for street photography. The jpeg IQ is horrendous unless you’re around ISO 100-200 with a decent lens, with noise reduction and sharpness dialed right down. Even then, colours are atrocious. Need to shoot RAW if you shoot low light or want attractive colours. The EVF is so small and unclear, it’s difficult to know exactly what you’re shooting or what is in focus. AF is not that reliable or fast. Most importantly, it does not have a proper grip, and is therefore uncomfortable to hold for very long, and is quite slippery, easy to drop.

Not gonna lie, I actually sold an E-M1 Mark II and picked up a GX85 (what this is called in the US I guess? I know it's also a GX7 Mark II) plus a 20mm f1.7 primarily because of the screen...I hate the flippy out vloggy screens so much, the tilting screen to make low angle shots easier that tilts around enough for me to reach up a bit is the sweet spot. I've been using my Pentax KP more and more as a main camera, so getting selling the Olympus that's started to collect dust and picking up a decent kit to replace it for my mirrorless/interchangeable lens setup was a nice deal (plus I really like the rangefinder style body). They look like Leicas because Leica has a habit of rebadging Panasonics since way back with the Digilux 1 I think. To be fair I also have a LX100 that I use for out and about shots. You get a pretty solid set of glass inside of a solid MFT Pana shell. It's fixed lens, but for me the lens covers all the primes I typically use with step zoom. I'm hoping Panasonic releases an LX200 or something in the future so I can skip the minor upgrade from the LX100 to the LX100ii. For a camera like this I think the effective 16mp of the LX100ii is a pretty good number. I'd still pay a reasonable price for a tilting screen, and I guess updated internals? There's no much to nitpick, I would have rather the LX100ii stay the same resolution and gained a tilt screen personally.

Trouble with highlights on micro four thirds? First time I’ve heard anyone have that problem with the system given it can recover highlights miles better than the full frame sensor of a Sony A7III. My Olympus E-M5 III, Lumix G9, and old GX85 can easily recover blown out highlights with the Olympus being the best at it whereas my Sony A7III couldn’t do it to save its life. So I would have to expose for the highlights whereas I will expose for shadows with micro four thirds because I can easily recover highlights. I’m hoping I can buy another Lumix GX85 soon as I miss having a rangefinder style body. I’m also tempted to get that Leica 15mm but I already have the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 so it’ll be difficult to justify that purchase 😅 Great video and pictures! The Lumix GX80/GX85 is such a beast for what it is.

I suspect some of MFT's worst critics are only judging by the sensor size, or they haven't bothered to learn how to make the most of the MFT system. I've had extensive experience with (and owned) MFT, APS-C and FF cameras and I stick with MFT.

@@metphmet the exposure compensation dial on the GX9 is too stiff. It’s difficult to move the dial only one third of a stop at a time. I’m constantly moving it too far or have to move the camera away from my face to get the right angle with my thumb to move the stiff dial. On the GX80 I assign ex comp to the front dial and it moves more smoothly. (I usually shoot in aperture priority). The rear dial on the GX9 is a little harder to use because of the more prominent thumb grip just below it. Not huge complaints, but noticeable. The GX9 does have more advanced features overall, plus the AF/AFC/MF switch, which I really appreciate. There was one on the GX7, but not on the GX80.

If anyone is still interested, I just learned that you can (must) disable the physical EC dial on top of the GX9 and assign exposure compensation to the front dial. This is how I have my GX85/80 set up. The front dial on both models moves smoothly. It also means both my GX9 and GX85 have the same control setup. I was thrilled to learn I could do this. The EC dial on the GX9 is now useless, except it still looks really sexy. I have the impression that not everyone has the same issue with the EC dial on the GX9. Mine is not easily useable, though.

This camera is very sharp, I'm always surprised how clear the images look for 16Mp. Interesting, I agree. maybe there is something about that 16Mp that helps with out of camera sharpness. Nice video, cheers.

Panasonic GX1 with the 14mm 2.5. Great image quality. Swap out for one of the other great m43 primes when you want a change. The Leica Q is great but save your money. M43 is a wonderful system.

Check out the Panasonic 12-32 zoom. It is a slower lens, and feels cheap, but it is sharp and takes great photos. Plus, it collapses down into a pancake, making the GX-80 pocketable.

Sold all my M4/3 except the GX85 and 15mm. Nothing comes close for the money. Don’t be to quick to dismiss the video capabilities. The North American version can shoot a 4k clip continuously until the card fills up or battery dies without overheating. Perfect B-cam to my S5. All it lacks is mic input.

Lumix Leica 15mm f1.7 is my favorite lens, but I have Lumix 14mm f2.5 on my GX85 all the time. It's the 1/2 the size of 15mm, and reminds me of 28mm focal length of Leica Q2.

It's a lovely set up combination, tho' I wouldn't exactly phrase your thumbnail descriptive as, "Budget", especially considering that I am two years late to this video - the body alone (now) at it's cheapest on mpb is £324.00; couple that with the Leica 15mm F1.7 ~ £349.00....it's no longer a bargain, for what ultimately, is a sophisticated point & shoot. The four thirds format, in & of itself is no more or less significant by comparison. I know MPB well - I've bought various Nikon DSLR components from them in the past, but the inclination to part with my heavier, more robust Nikons is not a desire I would wish to fulfill. That said, a very balanced overview - thank you.

Great review, thank you. I'm looking at smaller cameras that can get it done in low light and cost under 1000. This one is on my radar now in 2024. Anyone suggest anything else in a similar size that would be good in low light?

Its crazy that some buy and hype much more expensive integrated lens cameras (fuji, Leica) over this amazing camera. Guess when it comes to cameras style outmatches practicality for some.

So far in my 32 years of shooting photos, nothing has matched the sharpness of Lumix M43 gear. I had the Lumix GX1, G7 and G85, and regret selling them for Canon M gear. The Canon platform was better in low light, but didn't have glass to deliver the sharpness of M43. We photographers al learn from our mistakes.

I owned this camera for few months and really enjoyed using it, but then I started getting into recording video and the lack of a mic port meant that I eventually sold it for a G85. The G85 has a bigger body but works well for me. I have a 15mm F1.7 lens made by Panasonic but branded DJI and I'm impressed with the PQ (as a layman!) and it was cheaper than the equivalent Panny lens.

Excellent video 👍 If you want something cheaper but more angular you can use the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH, it works very well except that it has some barrel distorcion that is easily corrected in PS. Otherwise you can use the Olympus 12mm f 2, which is optically better and brighter, but much more expensive. If you want an excellent portrait lens the Olympus 45 f1.8 is wonderful and very affordable. My everyday camera is a Panasonic GM1, plus a Panasonic GF7 and a Olympus Pen F digital for when I want something with a viewfinder.

I am a Panasonic and Fuji user. The two Panasonic bodies I use are the G9 and GX85 (80 in Europe) and of course use the Panasonic-Leica 17mm lens. You have hit the nail on the head with this setup. I love IBIS and wish Fuji will get it’s act together about putting IBIS in all it’s bodies. It is like a heated seat in a car. Once you’ve tried it, it is hard going back. Small and lite is what I want and this combination fits the bill. The B&W jpeg file are beautiful. As you pointed out, the 4K is lovely and there are a lot of options to be selected. I don’t print images frequently. I have seen 16”x20” images that are lovely. This combination gives my Fuji gear a run for the money. Speaking of money, as you correctly point out, this body and lens combination is very cheap for what you get. Am I giving up my Fuji gear? No. I love the output from the lenses and bodies I have. I am not giving up this combination either. The two systems coexist for me. This 17mm lens is as close as I am ever getting to owning a Leica. Mask On Nurse Marty

The crop factor on micro 4/3 is 2x, therefore the 15mm corresponds to a 30mm on full frame, not a 28. But you are absolutely dead on when you said the 15 is an incredible lens. Cheers

I had one of Lumxi's earliest interchangeable-Leica-lens models years ago and absolutely loved its bokeh (it just has such an attractive smoothness that is so discernible compared to even Leica's own system output) and Lumix's tendency not to go OTT with its contrast suits me just fine (as can be seen in the stills in your video). Since then, with Apple phone ubiquity and hence social media photo porn from friends and all around me, I've put all my cameras down for quite many years. Still, whenever I chance upon a Lumix review, I can't help watching them (like this one) like some sort of unrequited love with Lumixes, LOL. And that's despite actually owning some Leicas and their glasses. There's something about Lumix's delivery of the quality-output to usability ratio that makes it utterly appealing without all the fuss of expectations from a Leica.

Good review. I have the GX85 and am rather fond of it. My main complaint is position of the control buttons on the back. They are right where my palm rests, resulting in the photo equivalent of butt-dialing. Truth be told, they are all like that: the price you pay for a compact camera. A minor quibble - I have a full-manual 12mm wide angle and manual focus is living Hell. (Should have gone the extra freight for an autofocus lens.)
