5 Street Photography Cameras Under $400

Following some great comment conversations about cheap street photography cameras, I've compiled a list of 6 great options, 5 of which are under $400 in an effort to find the best street photography camera! A lot of photographers may aim for something like the Canon R7, the Ricoh GR, the Fujifilm X100V or X100 series - however since using my Lumix LX100 and trying out more Lumix street photography, I have found myself more tempted by micro four thirds and other compact cameras. Street photography cameras luckily tend to benefit from being more compact and easier to carry with you, so ignoring larger full frame camera bodies both saves you money while serving a better purpose.

Just in case no one has said it already, the original Canon EOS M mirrorless camera is a hidden gem for recording beautiful video. If you overwrite the firmware with Magic Lantern (simple tutorials on youtube), it unlocks the ability to record 2.8k true RAW video in 10, 12, and even 14bit color depth. There's even a 5k anamorphic mode which is my favorite to shoot in. As far as I know, this is the only mirrorless camera that works with Magic Lantern. It's truly astounding what you can capture with this tiny cinema beast.

For street photograpy I usually choose my Sony A5100 with it's 16-50 kit lens, or with Pentax 110 24mm & 50mm F2.8 lens. Those tiny Pentax lenses fits even the smallest pockets, however they are very good quality, and giving a little retro-style look of the photos as they have a little vignetting and softness in the corners :)
@GeorgeHolden
@GeorgeHolden Год назад
Oh good idea on the Pentax lenses, I suppose with the A5100 there is still some peaking function? Otherwise I'd be worried with the older EVF and the small screen
@tnor90

@@GeorgeHolden The A5100 doesn't have EVF just a 3" screen (the screen resolution is the same as the 6xxx series, just it is only foldable upwards), but it have a very good focus peak system. I love to use it with manual lens, very easy to make great spot-on pictures with it.

@@BG5850 Yes, of course. It's very small with it's kit lens, and makes very good images for street and landscape photography (with it's kit lens limits, of course, far more better than any current high-end smartphones). And I've almost forget, it makes very good quality videos, the 50Mbps 1080p videos are very enjojable, even on a 55" 4K TV screen... :)

For under usd400 i think a used olympus EP5 + lumix 14mm f2.5 is the best camera for street photography. Compact size, tilting screen + touch to shoot, on board flash, super fast auto focus, good battery life, front and back dials for good control of aperture and shutter speed, the BW grainy film effect is the best straight out of camera even compared to the fujis across IMO.

I've used the Canon EOS M with the 22mm f/2 (35mm equivalent) lens and the kit lens since 2014 and it is definitely one of my favorite cameras. If you don't mind the weight, the EOS 40d is almost free to purchase now and is very quick focusing and shooting and has a little weather sealing. 10.2mp APSC sensor size. The camera has a lot of different settings available. I use a Canon PowerShot S95 for a "pocket" camera which has a lot of different settings and will produce good photos also. The 40d has no video and the S95 has up to 720P. I don't shoot a lot of video. I picked up the S95 for $40 and it looks like new yet. It came with a case. I always carry at least two batteries per camera if I go out for a day.

Hi George. My first ever camera was an Olympus Pen F with a 40mm f1.4 lens. Seeing a digital Olympus Pen on this reveiw made me smile at the thought. I used to do a paper round and also washed the car at the weekends for one of my customers (a maroon Rover P5). He had a two Nikon F2, a Hasselblad 500 and his own darkroom (his wife was a much better printer than he was). When I told him I was moving he gave me the half frame Pen FT as he never used it. Many happy memories taking pictures with it and a great intro to photography for a fifteen year old in 1975. Enjoy the rest of your day.

For street photography I would not go for a an EOS M because of the ergonomics. I’ve got small hands - it’s a tiny box with nothing to grip onto. That said I’ve owned 3 simultaneously because of its insane RAW video capabilities with Magic Lantern. With the latest “crop mood” firmware it is really a joy to use - shooting 5K RAW video.

Super video. Your explanations are terrific and recommendations solid. I have the following question: these are older cameras with older technology. How do they compare to a current phone, like the iPhone 13 ProMax with its ability to shoot raw plus it’s computational features? Keep up your fine work.
@GeorgeHolden
@GeorgeHolden 2 года назад
Thanks Stuart! That's on a camera by camera basis, if each were equipped with a 26mm lens to compare with a phone's main camera focal length, then in terms of convenience and the computational abilities the phone is going to win in most situations for casual shooters. But in situations where manual shutter speed control is needed or flexible ISO sensitivity these cameras still have the upper hand - that's also ignoring the fact that with many they offer more than one focal length or interchangeable lens options. Cheers Stuart!

@stuartsilverman3797 2 года назад
@@GeorgeHolden Thanks for the excellent response, George. There are, of course, apps for phones which allow for control of shutter speed and iso and phones do have multiple focal lengths; what they don’t have is the ability to change apertures. Have a super Sunday.

I have been considering a RX100 VI or VII but might be too previous, however probably looking for something with a fixed lens unless I get something like an alpha and just take to small shows where I might get permission. Ok seriously what on earth is going on with these camera prices. Trying to find a basic point and shoot camera with a more classic look, every single video I click on, I find a good camera with a reasonable price, then go check the price online, and the prices have skyrocketed hundreds and hundreds of dollars higher than they were at the time the video was posted. How is this happening with EVERY camera in every video I watch? Do you camera youtubers have this much sway over the market? Do all of your viewers go out and buy 5 of every camera you talk about? How in gods name is this even possible. I'm so sick of this it absolutely drives me crazy how overpriced things are these days, and how the internet doesn't let anything go unspoiled.
