My PERFECT Denim Jacket: Tanuki Red Cast

The perfect denim jacket will vary from person to person, but for me it doesn't get much better than the Tanuki Red Cast Jacket. Wildly interesting denim, a beautiful and classic design, and a fit that works with those who have some bulk. I've avoided denim jackets for a long time due to the overly slim fit which made them virtually unwearable, but if the Tanuki Red Cast is the last selvedge denim jacket I own- I'm fine with it!

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

your message is on point! no amount of money, or clothing, worth the quality time with your fam and friends. Chasing materials, even good investment clothing that lasts you a lifetime like this, would be meaningless without using it when spending time with your important ones.

Hey, Carl! I really appreciate the content that you create about quality rugged menswear and related subjects. I rarely comment on YT videos, but what you said at 8:38 about the fact that no garment is worth it if you don't live life in them, that really resonated with me and most probably with a lot of your subscribers. I feel like in these days we tend to lose sight of the actual point of having well made "drip". Objects can not and will not replace experiences and people. We should remember this every day we put a shirt or jacket on. Thanks again for all your work and all the best to you !

Amen brother amen. As a dad with the family it’s nice to look at stuff. It’s also nice to keep things in perspective. Who knows sometimes you see something like this on eBay and now you’re educated to know how to take advantage of a good deal. People don’t realize that we spent more on clothes years ago. When I was kid in the 80s a pair of Levi’s was $30. That’s about $75 in today’s money. I remember back in 1987 trying on a nice pair of jeans in a store on the upper East side Manhattan that had a price tag of $70. I took them off fast. That’s about a $175 in today’s money. These days people are used to spending $20 for everything made cheap in China.
@HaasGrotesk
@HaasGrotesk 3 года назад
And even before that people wore custom made clothing and suits that cost way more than that. Like you said. We've grown used to everything being cheap. I don't mind cheap clothes but I also can see value in custom made stuff.

Carl. I’ve been following for a while and appreciate your feedback and insights always but I felt obliged to write for the first time to this video. Thanks for those few words and sentiments at the end (minute 8-ish and beyond.) I think you struck a valid point. I myself lately have gotten rid of the excess and the items that were “inspired” by the life I was told to lead through ads, reviews etc. The result, I have less, I kept better quality, I keep better care for them and I use them truly now for the experiences that make life worth living. I would ageee this is expensive but one $425 jacket may be equal in price to 4 or 5 lesser ones but the cost of ownership to this is can be priceless. WELL DONE. THANKS!

Great video. With a mix of change in work style with the pandemic and getting older (51) I decided to move from collecting watches to replacing all my old business attire to boots and clothing I enjoy wearing and I expect will last. As a big guy (XXXL in Filson coats) it is a blessing Tanuki and some of the other brands aren't fitting me....it limits my purchases, but your message is meaningful in a lot of ways. Younger folks should consider their style and purchases as investments in both quality goods and in their own definition of their identity. But an investment like travel with the family that rewards in experiences is more valuable. Now that I'm getting older, I'm considering my next purchases of heritage and heirloom gear with the intent to have something that lasts me until I pass. That in its own way is a fun experience because it takes time and consideration to select a "grail" not because it is out of reach, but because you want something you won't be replacing.

Like the part on priorities. It might be worth it to buy something like this just to put things in perspective. For example, I spent a good amount of $$$ of a 21oz Iron Heart denim jacket. It was beautiful and, consequently, I never really wore it. Terrified of it getting wet or dirty or stolen. I ended up selling it at a loss and now wear a much cheaper waxed canvas jacket that I don't have to be so precious about.

I think you should give Rogue Territory a shot! Don’t try their signature Supply jacket because, unfortunately, it is too slim in shoulder and arm area. What you need to try is their Cruiser jacket, which is their version of a trucker jacket. It’s roomier in the shoulder and arm area, which is something I need because I got an athletic build. I got their Sashiko Cruiser, and it is, without a doubt, my favorite jacket! The texture and fades are just insane. It has also developed hairiness, which I love! Their fabrics come from Japan and they’re handmade in LA. Sadly, the jacket is sold out. But trust me, keep an eye on future Cruisers. They’ll be worth it!

I wanted to add, I really like the look of the premium Lee rider selvedge that retails for 300 ..yikes.. I’m sure I can find used versions… I’m wondering if that’s the right fit I’m looking for. And if there’s anything similar in the vintage realm.. And I totally understand about finding the perfect jacket, denim jacket, or whatever… For me, it’s all about fit… If you have something that fits you perfectly whether it’s $50 or $500 it makes you feel good… Especially if it’s great quality, it gives you confidence… And style matters to me, it should matter to every guy really… But it doesn’t… As an artist, I always care about how things look, and I like to be original… I love to have things that other people don’t have… And when people ask me about, where can I get that… I usually don’t say anything… Or if they like some thing, I try not to say anything… I just take the compliment… anyway, so I totally get it… And I’m still trying to find one that fits right and looks good without having to spend more than $150… If I spend $35, I’ll be happy to find that vintage jacket. ✌🏼

You know I love what you say about spending time w loved ones. But a step closer to that idea in regards buying tangible things w meaning is simply gifting these things to people. You're more likely to remember what you wore if someone got it for you...but it still kinda has to be dope/well thought out. Whether it's $50 or $450.

Hi, I am looking for a denim jacket and I’m thinking about vintage Levi’s or Lee 70s.. I’m wondering how they fit… Type three and the Rider jacket.. I’m about 5-7”, 155, 17 1/2 shoulders,39” chest.. 31w..not as big as I used to be but I’m closer to muscular athletic than slim..but I’m over 50..and I want some thing that is more slim, fitting or tailored, so I can wear just a T-shirt or flannel underneath, but nothing too big… I don’t like oversized or loose fitting jackets… And I’m stuck in between sizes I like the fit of a small, but then I need a little bit room if I want to move properly.😢.. and before I buy one, I’d like to know the fit of these jackets if you have a chance… Thanks. If not, no worries I appreciate your time.✌🏼

That jacket is $428 . It is 23 times more expensive than a Levis Premium Type III I got on sale at $18 bucks with Big Es. Which one is the better buy?

I got a question for anyone who wears a denim jacket. I've noticed the pockets are stitched very lopsided. Is anyone else very fussy about the pockets being symmetrical as opposed to being lopsided? Although once you notice this detail you may never be able to not notice lopsided pockets.

The color makes it look almost grey... id like it a bit more if it was a deeper blue indigo..

It's pronounced with the accent on the A, TAnuki. Not sure why even the wiki tts is wrong. The fabric looks great on this though, I barely even wear denim as it's so hard to find good items, especially in europe.

Sounds strange but I need a vid on the best underwear. I've tried lucky, American eagle, Hanes and a bunch of smaller brands I can't remember and nothing is comfortable. Im in a shop always moving up and down and side to side as I'm a painter, everything I've tried bunches up or wedgies. Help a brother

Beautiful jacket. I’d love one but it’s certainly outside of my budget. Sure, it’s a grail item, and the price and quality reflect that appropriately, but I’m one who will have to turn this down indefinitely.

Those silly branded lines on the shoulder are a problem for me. Otherwise, looks good.

I went to the website and looked at the jackets and jeans. Great clothing - BUT nothing available in tall sizes, or with the jeans inseams 36 or 38 inches. Maybe I am too old school, I just don't get this high end, expensive denim clothing. I'll stick with Wrangler and Schaefer.
