Fatima's story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of advocating for one's health. After being dismissed by her doctor for a week, she almost lost her life due to excessive bleeding caused by polyps.
At the age of 35, Fatima had to undergo the removal of one of her ovaries due to a cyst and was cautioned about the possibility of early menopause.
By the time she reached 45, Fatima began experiencing many menopause related symptoms. This phase of her life was particularly challenging as she was constantly on the move (due to work), living in different countries, which made managing her health even more difficult. The confusion surrounding menopause symptoms and the lack of clear answers from her doctors only added to her frustration.
The changes in her body weight and shape, such as the development of more curves and larger breasts, had a profound impact on Fatima's personal identity as a lesbian butch. This unexpected menopause related transformation led her to reconsider how she viewed herself, shifting from a butch identity to a femme lesbian.
Throughout her midlife, Fatima frequently encountered dismissive attitudes from medical professionals who attributed her health issues solely to menopause. Age, gender, and race discrimination further compounded her challenges in receiving appropriate care.
Despite her challenges, Fatima found solace in the healing power of the ocean. Every morning at 8:30, she joins a group of 30 individuals (many over the age of 60) to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of ocean swimming. Not only does it alleviate aches and pains, but it also greatly contributes to her mental health.
