Having a period is a monthly subscription that I did not sign up for and can’t cancel until I’m 60

In 9th grade wellness class, we had to watch two videos describing puberty, one for boys and one for girls. The boys one was pretty much like “oh yeah you’re gonna get some body hair, maybe a growth spurt and a voice change, you’ll also probably start feeling attraction™ but nothing too bad” whereas the girls one was pretty much “you are going to suffer, here’s an extremely long list of everything that will happen to you once your body decides that it’s had enough of not being pregnant”

I'm 43 and my period started when I was 12, I knew enough about the topic because since I was 10/11 my school did lessons on it, but of course it was awkward when it finally happened to me, and they weren't regular for the first year, so I would be worried about accidents! My mum made me feel even more insecure about my periods, that didn't help one bit and she should know how it feels! She did show me how to use pads, (never tampons) painkillers to take and I got extra pocket money to buy my own supply. My moods would be horrendous and the pain felt like I was about to die! I passed out many times while out shopping as my blood sugar was low and we where having a heatwave here in the UK! I haven't had a regular period in about a decade- maybe more, they stopped slowly and never came back! I always hated them so I was shocked, but quite happy TBH. Never wanted kids, so periods was like an un-wanted bodily function that caused a lot of mental /emotional anguish.

My middle school would force us to wear kaki pants, and I swear EVERY girl went to the nurse at least once because of an incident. It was horrid. When we were taking the winter exams and stuff I remember before one exam wanting to cry because of the pain, and I had to complete the exam while feeling like my appendix had just decided to implode on me. It sucked, very happy the girls at my schools had a strict rule in helping each other out when it came to this stuff.

I got a real good story for you. So, there is this weird sickness you can get while having your period sometimes. For me, this happens every other cycle. So, this story happened at lunch time of this year. I was sitting on my chair at lunch when I started to feel the normal cramps. I thought "Ok, well this is fine. I only have math after this, then some work time, then I can go home and put a pad on." I finished my small bag of Cheetos and walked to math class. While I was sitting in math class, it just got worse and worse by the minute. By the end, I could barely stand up and walk back to my last period. After sitting in my last period for a few minutes, I got the idea to go to the bathroom to make sure I was alright. I asked my teacher to go, and she gave me the ok to sign out. As I was walking to my bathroom, I got the sudden taste in your mouth that means "you're going to throw up in the next minute." I rushed to the bathroom and went into the nearest stall. I threw up into the toilet, and it was orange from the cheetos. I felt bad because there was another girl in the bathroom, but I was in too much pain to care too much. I reluctantly walked back to my teacher to tell her I threw up. 20 minutes later, I was sitting there in so much pain the in nurse's office when she called my name saying that my mom was here to take me home. I got up and quickly walked to the office to sign out. Just as I was signing out, I felt it again. I quickly looked back, but saw no trash cans or anything. I then signed out at fast as I could so I could throw up outside. I rushed out to my mom saying "Hey, sweetie! What's the mat-" She was cut off by me throwing up right in front of her into the mulch. She was shocked, and that immediatley answered her question. I couldn't even walk to the car, I had to sit on the sidewalk while she drove the car up to me. To make this short, I ended up throwing up seven times before it finally stopped. I had a fever, and the heating pad wouldn't even stop the pain. The only thing that stopped it was a hot bath, which felt like heaven at the time. Also, my flow was really heavy while this was happening, but it usually is. This also happened about two months ago again at the middle of the night. I threw up three times that time, but I kept throwing up the Advil that would stop the pain. I finally went to bed at 4 that night. The cramps are so terrible that I won't stop crying and begging for a hot bath. But my mom said no because it was 3 in the morning and everybody was sleeping. So, yay. Now I get this terrible sickness every other cycle I have, which is coming up soon actually. We went to the doctors about it and they gave me two options. This random medication, and birth control. Now, I just turned into a teenager like a month ago, so I found this very weird. She said we should try the medication and maybe start the birth control if it doesn't work that well. So, what did we learn from this? Pain sucks and I wish I could take away my period altogether. Thanks for reading this, I know it's quite long.

Just to tell all of you guys, my period started when I was TEN. (no joke). The worst part is that no one told me what a period was (my mom passed away when I was young and my dad knows absolutely NOTHING about periods). Before my period started for the first time, my older cousin told me about them. Unfortunately, she didn’t give me any pads or tampons. And when I was 10, I was a stupid kid with no sense, so I forgot how to tell how my period was starting. So when it started about about a month or two later, it was for about a week that I experienced Bloody Pants Syndrome in late fourth grade. Leaving around red marks on chairs and whatnot. I didn’t even know what was happening, AND NO ONE EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED THAT I WAS LEAVING CRIME SCENES AROUND THE ENTIRE FUCKING SCHOOL. I’d say about a couple of weeks after E P I C blood time, I remembered when me and my cousin were talking about periods. Immediately in my head, I was saying “Holy hell this is bad.” That’s all I remember from that memory of pain. Lucky, after that I soon got a package of pads and a pack of chocolates because my cousin is epic. I might get a lot of questions from this story, but all I have to say is that I wasn’t the smartest of all kids when I was 10, and I didn’t seem to have a lot of logic, either.
