Dein Deutsch is richtig gut geworden! Du bist sehr einfach zu verstehen, dein Akkzent ist nicht schlimm. :) Your verb placement and conjugation is off in places, but that's understandable at your level. Like others have said, watch movies and TV shows in German! German TV is often of.... questionable quality, but our dubs are actually quite good and not anywhere near as bad as us English-speaking snobs like to complain they are ;). From my own experience, just watching tons of media in the language you want to learn does wonders for your listening comprehension and your feeling of the natural flow of the language. Having subtitles (in German, not English) turned on is also a really helpful tool. Re-reading books that you're really familiar with in your native language can help a lot as well, especially for your grammar and vocabulary (I started out with Harry Potter for example). It's also normal and natural to develop a kind of "voice" or "personality" for any language you speak apart from your native language. I think it's just a part of our inborn social instinct to try and imitate the native speakers we interact with. My Japanese voice is like half an octave higher than my German voice XD. Though I think in this case this was just your inner perfectionist being frustrated and not necessarily your development of German NALF, so don't worry. ;)

Dein Deutsch ist schon recht gut! Du hast gute Fortschritte gemacht! The change of personality is because you think in english and translate it to german. That's hard work. It has been said that while learning a new language there always comes a point where it "clicks" and from that point on you get how everything works and the only thing you need to improve on is the vocabulary. From what little we have seen you communicating in german in your videos I have the feeling that moment is not too far away from you any longer. I have seen it at work multiple times where non native speakers usually took about a year until that moment came. We also contributed to this after realizing that talking back in english is not helpful unless you need to translate what was not understood. And so we try to only speak german with our foreign co-workers to help them adapt faster. And it does work.

Nervousness frequently results in a different pitch, so that's gonna even out over time. What appears to be a different personality is also probably more an effect of your proficiency and vocab knowledge limiting your conversational range. Quitck wit is hindered by a slow tongue. For practice: Get a German boyfriend/girlfriend. But one who's steadfast about not switching to English. If switching is cemented as a habit, s/he'll be lost for all everyday spoken language purposes.

This comparison is really interesting. You should do this again sometime to see how far your German has progressed! :D Also: sometimes your German is super on point! - like at the end of the video. I also believe that you're pretty good at "Umlaute" in most cases which is quite astonishing. Only your grammar is a little bit off from time to time since our verbs have different positions than in English. Even Germans can really make a mess of it - as you can see in school very often when the students butcher their German (or English) grammar in their homework depending on which subject they dislike more. Regarding your personality I'd say that you are more hyped while speaking English and calmer when you speak German because you have to actively think about what you're going to say. But that really happens to everyone.. xD When I speak in English I tend to talk way too fast because I seldom have the opportuntiy to talk to a native speaker. I guess I feel a bit awkward and don't want to bore the other person. If I ever get to visit an English speaking country though I'll have lots of fun using my speaking abilities.

Speaking German is work for you, speaking your mother tongue is just that. Being at home in it and being relaxed and safe with it. Hey, I watch your videos already for quite a while. I liked watching you trying to get into that German thinking, and you are doing quite well. I have a couple of American friends, and for the exception of one (and she is a professor for German art at Harvard Art Museum), noone did better. Since I am at the moment trying to get into Dutch, I can really understand how difficult it is to think into that special way each language is structured, but I'm sure it is worth it. I never forget when I was as an exchange student in Indiana when I was sixteen. At the end of the stay, I dreamt several night in English. Next February, I will be for a few days in San Francisco and am going to meet some old American friends, and there will be again that moment when I try to express something in English and I don't know how to say it properly... But that's just normal. Keep on learning, it will acompany you a life long.

I learnt German in the black forest region. I didn’t study it really but picked it up over time. Standard High German is very common all over but I guess I picked up a few Alemannisch words, accent, tone of expression etc. My German friends from Berlin always say I speak German like a farmer!!

You’re doing a great job! My personality changes when I speak English. I would like to speak more fluently. It’s so much easier for me to write in English than to speak, because I have to react immediately. I believe in you!

First of all, utter rubbish or “Schwachsinn” your German is not "schlecht" at all. Second, don't blame everyone talking in English to you, some can't speak German as good as you do ever thought of it that way? 😉 But one minor detail is bugging me- explanation in English: You're an old CHILD but not an old MAN. You’re a Man-Child! Besides, German is a helluva difficult language and you managed it pretty good so far. As long as you don't order a "Fischbrötchen" instead of a "Schnitzelbrötchen" you should be fine.

Agreed. You speak both fluently. It’s almost impossible to figure out what your native language is. But I know and therefore I disagree with you, it’s a little embarrassing that his German is so bad.

Nele Hiphiphooray if anything it’s not bad. I just don’t know how much of an effort he’s making to really speak to someone in German when everyone’s able to understand English.

ItwasEllinotme do you always have to make sense? I want to be right, for once. He’s in Germany for what? 4 years? A little lazy, huh? Someone should drag him out of his comfort zone.

Sweetiedums, your German is really ok. Focus on lexics and grammar, the accent will get lost on the way (the more you speak, the more it's gonna fade out). Fun thing I've noticed is that you, Swabian that you are, say "bischt". Fantastic.

One rule for making German sentences: 1. write down the verb you want to use on a piece of paper. 2. Then put everyhing that comes to mind in your sentence. 3. When you have run out of words read your note an add the verb. And thusly you made the perfect German sentence.

I think this is completely normal. In your native language you don't have to think about the words to use and grammar... it just flows and your brain is more free to concentrate on expressions and feelings... you need too speak german more common and don't think about it. Don't get me wrong but in your videos it seems that you do have a huge comfort zone, language wise. ;) You surround yourself a lot with your american teammates and the germans around you speak english to you as well... ;) listening to a foreign language is the first an most important step to learn it. You need a german girlfriend and you will speak german in no time. ;)

Sei nicht zu hart zu Dir selbst. Dein Deutsch ist völlig okay. Die Leute im Supermarkt oder beim Döner-Imbiss werden Dich gut verstehen und sich über Deine Bemühungen freuen, Deutsch zu sprechen. Es wird immer besser 👍 On the other hand, I totally understand what you mean. I learned basic English at school, which gives me a slight advantage when it’s about language skills. Later in my life, I had the pleasure to live in Chicago for eight years. And it’s true, you become a little different person when you totally immerse into a different language. Your perspective on things, even your way of thinking changes. You feel a different person. Same way back, when I returned to Germany. Feeling totally in between. I think it’s one of the greatest and most amazing experiences of my life. All in all, it makes you grow as a person. Greets to Schwäbisch Hall from Cologne ✌️
