This was very helpful. Thanks for sharing. I think teaching primary is definitely easier than secondary but sometimes I doubt my knowledge of alllll those different subjects I would have to keep up with in primary teaching, as opposed to specialising in my degree subject if I were to teach secondary.

This video was really helpful! I've been working as an English tutor for primary and high school students for nearly a year now, and I really love it. I've done a BA here in Australia as an international student ($$$!) and would really like to do a postgraduate teaching course, but as I'd be classed as a domestic student in the UK, I'm planning on moving. The system for becoming a teacher is super different over there, so it seems like I can't just do a Masters in Teaching like you can here (right?) From my research, it seems as though the PGCE is the most direct and practical route in the UK. Anyway, after that long-winded explanation, I just wanted to say thanks for this! It's so confusing trying to navigate a different higher education system, and even with all my researching, it's hard to get an indication of just what it'll be like to do a teacher training course! Really appreciate the honesty and clarity! :)

I started my PGCE at my nearest University available (Bishop Grosseteste University- Lincoln) in September last year. For more than 5 years, I was planning to make it into Primary Teaching, so I studied my Undergraduate Degree (also at Bishop Grosseteste University) and graduated in July last year (the ceremony itself was streamed live). Before I go into the nitty gritty, my interview was very similar. The lecture and seminar groups were very similar (I was in Group C, where Groups A and B were for the 3-7 Cohort and C, D and E were for the 5-11 Cohort), but we had PE once per term. 1st up was a few weeks at Uni and then my Self Arranged Placement which lasted a week at a local village school. This was followed by 2 further weeks at Uni before starting my 1st Assessed Placement (or Introductory Placement as it was called) at yet another village school (split by an Infants School and a Junior School- I was in the Infants School). I didn’t do too well, and to make matters worse, a significant event happened (which I’m not willing to disclose) almost immediately after I finished my teaching there. 3 weeks at Uni followed in January before starting my 2nd (of what was meant to be 3) Assessed Placements (Developing Placement). I started off fine, but in the February Half Term, I started to realise that teaching wasn’t for me (but with everybody saying to me I should soldier on, it was not helpful). By the end of February and into early March, I was all over the place mentally because I couldn’t eat, sleep or relax without feeling either stressed or worried about at least one of my planning, teaching and marking. When my UBM (University Based Mentor) showed up, I was asked to leave because I was getting close to feeling very poorly and I was really struggling to keep up (that was on the 4th of March 2020). I never contemplated arguing because of how badly the PGCE had ruined me; it pretty much confirmed that teaching is no longer my desired career path. A week later, I made the decision to drop out of the PGCE because I knew it wasn’t worth going through the mental pain again and letting the workload eat me alive again. I know these times are nowhere near normal, but the worst thing about it was that if I somehow held on for almost 3 more weeks, I would have gone on to pass the PGCE. Suppose I’ll never get this close ever again, but I don’t regret what I did at the time.

Thank you for being so open and honest about your experience. Teaching really is a job you have to love and I think many students training do discover it's not for them - there's no shame in that! It sounds like you made the right decision for your own wellbeing. I hope the university were supportive during this difficult time and that you are feeling a lot better now.

Little Learners You deserve every bit of credit for responding in the way you did. You are absolutely right about teaching, it’s one of those jobs where you must give it your all every day where it is very easy for one bit of negativity, stress or something significant to eat you alive; a tough test of resilience. Yes, it felt bad hearing about some of my cohort reach the end (largely because of what could have been), but as far as my wellbeing was concerned, it took a few days until I felt I was myself again and I don’t regret the decision to drop out. I’m not one to dish out criticism, but I wasn’t given the right support. Yes, I had the knowledge to apply aspects (such as Assessment for Learning), but applying them consistently, whilst fitting them onto an ever increasing workload is a different challenge, when absolutely anything could come at you every day. Earlier this week (15th of July, where I applied just a week before), I have been interviewed for, and accepted a TA job at one of the best schools in the country (which I’ll not disclose due to confidentiality reasons). I’m looking forward to starting in September and I must say, it is quite the contrast compared to where I was 5 months ago, when the 10 most stressful days of my life were about to begin. It is possible I might vlog about my experience where I’ll open the lid on what really happened (no names, obviously).

For an overseas teacher living outside UK & having neither a work permit nor a national insurance number, does that mean she is not entitled to apply for a teaching post in UK?. As to the QTS, can it be obtained online? Does it have an expiry date? Where may I get materials to study it? Can I submit a proof of enrolment and work till I receive the certificate? Is there any exceptions for teachers from QTS or any other alternatives? What’s the shortest time to get QTS?Can you teach while earning it? Is there a table that clarifies the diff. Bet. Pgce and qts esp. with regard to the requirement of each? Would you mind saying how you funded your course? Did you struggle with any of the costs, especially living in London?
@LittleLearnersVideos
@LittleLearnersVideos 4 года назад
Hi Carly - when I did my PGCE there was a scholarship for students who had gained a first class undergraduate degree of £9000. I used this money to pay my rent and bills. I used a student loan to pay for my tuition fees. I had been working 3 part time jobs during my undergraduate degree so had a bit of that money left, and I also did a part-time tuition job during my PGCE but it was more for the experience as I didn't earn very much and wouldn't recommend trying to work at the same time as doing a PGCE. It was extremely expensive to train and live in London and I had to be smart about my finances. My parents did send me care packages of food every now and then as I was on a gluten-free, dairy-free diet for health reasons and that was really expensive! So I was lucky they could help me there. We also never had the heating on in our students house 😂

do you think a non native can find it easy to teach in the UK schools?
@LittleLearnersVideos
@LittleLearnersVideos 3 года назад
Hello - I know many excellent teachers who are not British and teach in British schools. I think having teachers from across the globe in a school is wonderful! As long as your English is fluent and you have the right qualifications, I so no reason why not 😊

I attended two schools, one teacher was polish and the other Russian, aside from people making fun of them (in my experience) they got on all right, my Russian teacher taught Spanish and she was such a sweet women. My polish teacher taught art on a foundation course I took, he didn’t really speak much.
