I'm also working towards goals, but instead of a weighted chin up, I'm trying to get my first bodyweight pull-up. I'm also trying to get under 30% body fat for the first time since high school.
Burrito to Candito. My chin up max is 175 lbs at 205lbs uglier non strict form no kip but chin barely to bar with out pause. Weighted chins are the best. I’ve been training from 90 degree up to chest to bar with a pause for top end strength up to 50 lbs for reps and sets now with a pause. I treat that top end strength as a separate exercise.
Great stuff. I personally love weighted chin ups and close grip neutral pull ups. Really feel them in my back and biceps. Terrific movement. My current max is only 45lbs but I'm 58 and completely fucked my elbow tendons rockclimbing in my late 20s and early 30s so my maxes are often dictated by tendonitis 🙄 Keep up the good work and keep enjoying yourself! Having fun and seeing results are equally key as far as I'm concerned. Cheers!
I think Derek was talking about "what the average person" views as jacked. I think that's a quite different standard from what people who watch fitness youtube view as jacked. In the eyes of the average person, Conor McGregor is absolutely jacked at 155lbs. In the eyes of someone who has been hanging around strength and physique sports for a long time, no, he's tiny.
So true. Show them someone who is decently jacked but not a low bodyfat; then show a shredded conor... A regular person will absolutely find Conor more impressive, ripped and jacked.
"What is it darling?" "Nothing honey, it's just squatboy doing pull-ups, waddling like a duck." "Is he juicy tho?" "Yeah." *honey looks out the window* "Nice."
It depends on height, body fat and hydration levels. I think your 170-175 number is pretty good if assuming manlet, hydrated and 10-15% body fat. If 5% body fat and dehydrated for a show you could easily be down around 150 and look even more jacked.
Don't forget waist size for proportions, I got a friend at 5'-9", 160lb that looks like a stage ready bodybuilder, because his waist is a size 28. If his waist were a size 32 then it would totally change his look, wider attachment areas will make all of his muscle bellies look much flatter, he'd have much less definition etc.
Nonsense. Row variations + lat pull downs + curls will provide just as good (most likely better) stimulus:fatigue ratio than pull-ups when it comes to building the back and biceps. Dips are great but not necessarily better than any other pressing movements.
@@Lucas-tg3hv wtf is gay about it. Pull-ups are still great and lat pull downs are just another tool to achieve similar outcomes (provided they can be loaded the same). My point is that pull-ups are not uniquely better.
Funny you commented this, I was just thinking that throughout the duration of this video. Martin was and is no dummy. What everyone laughed at back in 2009-2011 that he promoted is now the go-to advice lol. Down to the fasting too- it isn’t a magic bullet but it’s so practical even to this day. That, and Weighted Chins, dips, deadlifts, squats, bench, press- amazing physique if you’re adding weight regularly.
You know... I've finally got a power rack cable etc to improve my bench this is a fantastic reminder, why have I not programmed in weight pullups you've convinced me 👌🏾
Great job on your videos bro! Love watching and learning. Skills. Thanks for showing us your physique. Based on your Deads / Bench / Chins I would've thought your lower back, chest, and bics would've been larger. Obviously, I'm still learning. 1 more thing, looks like your symmetry is off - Right Trap & shoulder are pulling higher than the left. Keep up the great work, Jonnie!!
If I can offer one tidbit of advice on weighted pull ups, I've found using a loading pin and a clip makes it way easier than fishing a strap through a stack of plates. Just get some chains cut short enough that it doesn't hit the ground. Trust me, a random dude on the internet, it's way easier.
Derek looks at it from a physique perspective (how your delts, chest, biceps, and general frame look while being lean). I look at it from a total lean body mass perspective (which includes delts, chest, biceps, but also accounts for back musculature, glutes, hams, quads) which makes the scale go up.
To get some extra height on that chin-up bar arrangement, why not put some blocks under the rack, or even slide some 45 pound plates from your gym, just enough to get that last bit of rom.
mad fooking respect lad 2:30 "None of this weight loss would have been possible without this supplement - that's not remotely true but it's only 24$" the only guy who currently keeps it real.
I agree with your claim about 150 lbs people not being jacked, although some of them look good, when some with about 180-185 stands next to them you can see how small they actually are, joint size on individuals is also a big factor
You can see the maturity in your muscles and how you’ve paid attention to hitting all muscles, social media distorted what a muscular physique looks like. We are used to tanned shredded vascular Instagram bodies at this point.
Im on a quest to get a big chin up as well. My goal is 55kg/121lbs by the end of the year, already did 42.5kg the other day so im close. But yeah Chin ups are key to a well built and well rounded physique
I'd disagree. Someone like mighty mouse fights at 125 and looks jacked. Mcregor never looked jacked. Chad Mendes same weight looked jacked. Kind of has to do with height, waist size and arm length, chest size. Many factors. Aljamain Sterling is pretty jacked he fights 135.
I am 5ft7", 175lbs, and 64 yrs young. Can do 11 bodyweight strict-reps pull-ups. I do bodyweight only calisthenics for endurance and cardiovascular health. I do barbell/dumbbells work too. My thumbs-length inclined-bench press is 155lbs x 7. Hope to achieve 225 x 7 by my 🎂 July 14 2024.
Supinated are generally called chin-ups brotha...also your enlightenment that standing reach is generally measured with square shoulders, and the arm often not even fully extended tells my that by those standards I had around a 40" peak running vert back in the day, when I always called it about 36-37. Though I do still consider that a pretty dumb way to measure standing reach, because obviously when jumping you're reaching as high as possible
It's great that you're focusing on other movements again but I don't think you're thinking about this the right way if you want to look jacked. It seems like you're way too focused on getting a higher 1RM pullup when really if you want to look jacked you should just train more like a person trying to get jacked. More reps and more variety and stop focusing on increasing 1RMs. Increasing your 1RM on the powerlifts obviously didn't help the physique so you really shouldn't train like that for accessory lifts as well if you simply want to build muscle. You have an insane amount of knowledge when it comes to powerlifting but you need to go back to your roots and train like you did when you were actually jacked. Quit hyper focusing on increasing the 1RM. Go back to an upper lower split with a heavy emphasis on reps and accessory work for reps. You never trained your 1RM pullup in the past and you still had decent strength just from the accumulation of volume from moderate to higher reps and higher fatigue. Your powerlifting brain is hurting your physique progress. Not trying to be too critical, I've been following your channel since the beginning I just don't like seeing you focusing on the wrong thing.
Focusing a bit on 1RM isn't bad, it just looks like he's overspecializing(again). Add in some higher rep lower weight work and more variety to accommodate on lighter days and he'd be golden but we're only going off the glimpse he showed. Wouldn't doubt that he's overspecializing cuz he's carrying what looks like a lot more fat and less muscle than when he was "jacked", so a lot of that number increase was unlikely mostly lean muscle accrual like most powerlifters like to delude themselves into thinking. High reps for the hypertrophy and submaximal reps for the strength that he clearly wants. Variety for the total strength so it's not just getting overly accustomed to movement pattern. (The same thing AlphaDestiny advocates for).
@@111kino There's really no benefit in maxing out or striving to increase your 1RM when your goal is muscle building. You should of course be striving to get stronger, but in a moderate to higher rep range. Doing so will of course increase your 1RM but that's not the goal of training. You can raise your 1RM without building any muscle but raising your repping strength on a consistent basis is pretty much impossible if you're not gaining muscle.
@@Soccasteve 1RMing frequently like he's doing is pretty stupid, but doing lower rep higher weight days is better for strength development as opposed to grinding out moderate/high reps and sets only in the same period of time. If the goal was only muscle building, which it sounds like it isn't, then higher ranges would definitely just be the no brainer. You can definitely raise your repping numbers on a consistent basis without gaining muscle if you're just refining the movement pattern, especially if you only utilize a fast tempo as that allows for a lot slower burnout rate. It's the same issue as overspecializing in general, at some point there isn't any more gains to squeeze out and you're just mastering the movement pattern.
Jonnie, the ultimate youtuber in the pull-ups game is Powerexplosive. He has done like 120kg training max and he has the current Guiness World Record (105kg or so).
Everyone is different when it comes to their bodyweight standards. For me, at 6’1 I was obsessed with being at least 200 pound. I wouldn’t get too caught up in the numbers and just try to be the healthiest, strongest version of yourself possible
along with Jeff Nippard since he already commented and stated his case, Trystan Lee would be another person I would absolutely consider jacked and under 170. Derek Simnett would be another one for sure.
just coming back to lifting after a few years so I didnt see this video at release but bro that protein went from 25$ to $48 in 7 months. they smoking crack lol
Dude, you should look at some streetlifters. Many of them have max pull-ups beyond 200lbs. Check out BineBeast, he pulled 90kgs and I am certain he’s a natural.
At 6'1'' I was 138 lbs when I graduated high school I'm now 175 lbs. I've definitely gained muscle and strength in that time but my training has been inconsistent. I also ran an ultramarathon last year but am now trying to focus on strength. Going to start including more pullups, specifically weighted.
