After hearing various viewpoints pondering the scenario, chances are the copilot attempted to check the damaged condition of the right wheel landing gear looking from the OPENED rear door of the aircraft. Perhaps, the copilot had no harness on him that secured him to the plane which in his process of leaning or looking out to check the damaged landing gear, he fell out of the plane at around 4,000 feet.
Remember feeling the wind push against your hand when you stuck it out the window of your parents car before they started yelling about the danger? In the rush of the moment he might have forgotten how much more force that wind packs on a plane. The other pilot is hampered by what he is focused on. He likely has headphones on to speak with control. His eyes are focused ahead. Saying jump, in the moment, is a quick way to across that your co pilot is no longer is the plane. He likely didn't expect his copilot to make such a mistake and can't imagine he just could fall out.
Yeah...maybe got sucked out while trying to visually check the wheel from opening side window and looking out. Window seems large enough..assuming its the openable type
That in fact wasn't the case. He literally jumped out. You do not "check for damage" by opening the rear hatch. You fly low over an airport and have ATC look. Dude was just suicidal, possibly a mental disorder. You ever have the feeling when you fuck up so bad you want to just kill yourself? Or a embarrassing memory? Well, this guy actually followed through. Once again, you do not check for damage by looking outside of the plane. In an emergency, you fly and do checklists to make your landing as safe as possible.

The surviving pilot knows what happened. He's keeping quiet on advice from his lawyer. Lawsuits will be flying around soon. The surviving pilot and owner of the aircraft will be easy targets. By the way, this TV report added NO new information, but Muffy the reporter got to drive to beautiful Raeford NC.
People look way too deep into this kind of stuff. Let the detectives figure it out. Chances are, he tragically fell out by not being completely safe when checking the wheel. He was only 23 years old, that's not necessarily the age of wisdom and everyone is susceptible to making mistakes, sometimes fatal ones unfortunately.
YOU have no clue what happened, and yet are suggesting he tragically fell out. Do you have any idea how unlikely it is for a PILOT to fall out of THAT aircraft? This isn't some two-seat Cessna! He jumped or was pushed. Those are the ONLY possibilities. Given that he nearly crashed the aircraft earlier...

It's better to wait for the investigation result than drop assumptions without basis. It's easy to point fingers without knowledge of what really happens. Wait....why did they try landing on a grass field in the first place ? Their plane was functional enough to make that hard landing then fly off to then land on a proper airport.... This entire "accident" sound so odd.
Skydiving plane. The grass strip is the airfield they operate out of. They had done several touch-and-goes that day. It is not uncommon for a plane to 'go around' after a hard landing. Once they realized they had damaged landing gear, they went to RDU so that they could land on a smooth surface. Much less chance of a plane digging into the asphalt than a grass field.

A theory could be, they lost a wheel and the copilot went to open the side door to check if the wheel was there and maybe fell off the plane, it could very much be.
Well if they had lost a wheel, and knew it, which they did, there wouldnt be much point in looking for something that wasnt there any more now would there?

@Falcon2 why was the co pilot not in his seat?Why did he open the door? Don’t know if you know this but co pilots usually don’t run around the plane in an emergency situation. Maybe ask why he wasn’t helping with the situation at hand which would be to help land the plane safely. These are questions that could be asked and used to determine what happened. Also the plane was still flyable, it lost a wheel not a wing so it’s not like the pilot had blinders on trying to save the plane.
These comments are ridiculous. How do you know he didn't jump?? You all have no idea what happened, and neither do I. No one knows the co-pilots mental state. He could have used an emergency situation to hide another situation and decided to jump. They had already confirmed the landing gear had fallen off when the plane did a go around. The pilot didn't need to check since they had already confirmed it. ** If pilots need to check a landing gear issue they are trained to fly to the closest airport with a tower (if enough fuel is on board). Air traffic control will then confirm there is an issue with the landing gear. No one is going to hang out of a plane to check the landing gear. That is crazy. Obviously, that is the reason they decided to fly to a towered airport like RDU. Pilots also know you have a better survival rate staying in the plane and landing with landing gear issues. General aviation plane have landing gear problems all the time.
I feel like if he was pushed…. Then nobody was flying the plane because how are you gonna let another man unlatch your window and push you out the plane without a fight? It’s sad but it seems logical to assume he jumped himself
I work in the airline industry and these pilots are depressed they talk about crying everyday and wanting to kill themselves everyday you would be surprised what they are going through mentally always on demand with no appreciation reciprocated
Why do you need a tower to see that a wheel has fallen off? People on a drop zone, whether qualified pilots or not are around planes all the time, and at least most of then can count to three. Secondly did the pilot fly past the tower when he got to Raleigh? Everything I have heard suggests he did not which in turn suggests that it wasnt the reason he flew to Raleigh. Maybe it was the best place to get the plane fixed?Maybe the firefighting facilities affected his decision? I dont know A bit more pertinent possibly is why was the co pilot looking for something both of them knew wasnt there? Especially considering you can see the main undercarriage if you stick your head out of the cockpit side windows. There are 3/4 possibilities here and they may never get to the bottom of this one
@@admiralbenbow5083 yeah I believe they have other ways they could figure to check and see if their landing gears are functioning even if the sensors aren’t. Or whatever the problem is. But it also requires knowledge and expertise so if you have any doubt as to what’s going on, I’m pretty sure most pilots could agree that they would fly by the control tower to get confirmation of any issues outside the plane. Such as the ability to see if a landing gear has failed. From the tower, it’s easy for the people inside to see the plane and for the pilots, it’s easy because they’re already circling the airport at that point… trying to figure out how to land.

They tried landing once. But the wheel fell off. Being 23 he's still a kid in his Brain. He probably thought they were done and gonna die anyway. He chose his own destiny. Sometimes it's just as simple as that. Not everyone has nerves of steel. I've seen people freak out during thunderstorms!! And they where inside!!
The reason the wheel came off was reportedly a hard landing by the "victim" Supposedly the other living pilot took over after the hard hit and "go around " They then knew the wheel came off because of the "hard landing". Most times you lose a wheel its very survivable... Probably over 95% survivability.... The kid probably went back to look out the open door and was sucked out.
Boom. And the 911 call was suspicious “ it’s the craziest thing” the pilot says. Like he’s putting that into the mind of the 911 operator. Who says this after someone “ jumps” out of a plane…
For the conspiracy theorists, the plane lost a part. The pilot didn't go "let me lose a wheel so I can off this dude". Also, when a plane loses a part, the pilots first thought isn't to kill the passenger. Their first thought is to land that plane. Maybe the passenger dude freaked and jumped, figuring it'd be a better death than crashing. People do that, you know. Just look at 9/11. Just because y'all don't know what you'd do in that situation, don't go immediately assuming murder. This is why humans are a disaster, constantly jumping so high to conclusions they end up bumping their head.
Not a great comparison between this incident and 9/11. On 9/11 people were jumping out of burning buildings where they knew that they didn’t have any chance of getting out and surviving and the heat was so intense they knew they were going to die. Terrible comparison

He probably fell off the airplane but.....if you are flying with someone else and suddenly they are not there anymore don't you panic? Thinking he might have fallen? His tone of voice saying the co pilot jumped down, is very calm and composed....like someone guilty that knows exactly what happened.
Being calm and collected is the mark of any good pilot, all the way down to a crash if that's what happens. If people are prone to get emotional and irrational, even when disaster strikes, they should not be a pilot.
The audio of the pilot saying this is not public information. It is held back for the investigation. These news reports are half done speculation reporting.
You're gonna tell me, they just have had an emergency, a failed landing and broken wheel, and the pilot in command managed to push the other person through the door which is many feet behind the cockpit... WHILE FLYING the already unstable aircraft at low altitude? C'mon... most probable scenario: the deceased pilot tried -very recklessly- to visually check the landing gear and slipped. If it was an agreed decision, the surviving pilot is indeed in big trouble.
The tinfoil is strong in these comments. Like a lot of people have said and many pilots with YEARS of experience flying have said, he most likely went to check and see if they had gear and fell out.

I mean the fact that they said he called the police to report the incident makes no sense, because he would contact the ATC. I think the "one man said" part of this whole thing was fabricated by CBS
So let me get this straight: They made on to the deck but hard and instead of braking to a stop, the pilot applied full power to TOGA? He's an idiot. This is confirmed by him popping open the rear door to check how messed up his plane was...... while it was moving...... at altitude.
Can you imagine being the copilot flying the airplane, if he didn't see the guy fall out, one minute the guy was there and the next minute gone. Your mind would be playing all kinds of tricks on you.

That is BS. The pilot did not "Jump Out"! That other pilot has some explaining to do, about why he would so quickly say "My Pilot Jumped Out", he is lying. In the end sooner or later the truth will come out.
