My Platy Fish Giving Birth

Same I just spotted one baby on its own, so I moved it to a spare tank! I presume there were more!

My fish had babies and I had to call somebody to ask how she even got pregnant because she’s in a take by her self and they said that she could carry sperm for a good few months by herself

Of course! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. It takes practice, but I guarantee you that you can experience it too with your own platy and guppies. Once your ever- growing pregnant platy squares off on the bottom, looks dilated, and seeks solace in plants/near the heater, while also becoming "extra" popular with the other males in the tank, you know that labor is close and it's time to transfer her to the breeding box. You might also notice either an increase or decrease in appetite. If you happen to catch one of your fish in labor, please share! :)

It is cause the others got eaten, you should study about the fish you get just to make sure that you know what to do cause the same happened to me.

Is it daft to feel sad that fish eat babies. Why? Oh why?

If you're keeping a close eye, you've already got the hardest part down. You'll notice that within a day or so before she's about to give birth, she will seem noticeably larger, seemingly overnight. She will also start acting a bit more erratically. This is when you know it's time to move her to a birthing box. Once she's done having her babies, which usually takes a few hours or so, it's best to move the babies to their own separate tank until they are large enough to be re-introduced to your main tank. As unpleasant as it may sound, the mother, not to mention any other larger fish that you have may very well eat the babies if you don't separate them for a few weeks. Of course, you always have the option of providing a lot of hiding places in the main tank for the babies to take refuge until they have grown large enough. This one is up to you though. And congratulations! Sounds to me like you have some baby platys on the way in the next few weeks! Keep me posted! :)

Same here then she gave Birth

My red wagtail had the last fry about 3-4 months ago and is still quite fat. Though she is very greedy and between feeds will nibble at a limnophila sessiliflora plant. Some of the fry are the same but others are very arrow shaped.

Can you post a picture for me to take a look at? She very likely is pregnant. However there are some other reasons that your fish could "look" pregnant when she's not. Nevertheless, there are some very unique features and behaviors that typically indicate that your platy is in fact pregnant. A picture would enable me to help you truly understand this difference. Keep me posted!!

Great question! It can vary quite a bit. From personal experience, my platy fish have dropped most of their baby fry within 3 to 5 hours. However, their individual stress level factors into this process in a big way. If they are stressed out for one reason or another, it could take up to 48 hours. If you don't happen to be using a breeding box/net or separate tank, just make sure that there is plenty of privacy and floating plants for the mom and babies to hide so that the process goes as smoothly and quickly as possible. Your worst nightmare the platy fish gives birth in 28 days

Awesome! I know I'm a bit late in responding, but any babies yet?? I know it's typically 28 days or so but I've had platys that drop their fry much sooner! Keep me posted and if you are lucky enough to catch it on video, I'd love to see!

Dana Marie It has been 2 days now and only 6 fries. This is the third day after her 1st birth. So wish me luck for more fries!! So hard to record she is hiding :/

If this is her first birth ever, it's not unusual for you to only find six of her fry! I have a separate baby tank for the fry to grow big enough for the grown up tank. If she is still hiding, she may still be in labor. Typically, their appetite lessens and they hide when either in labor or very close to being in labor. When it looks my my platy is about to drop her fry I usually carefully transfer her to a breeder box like this... images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/318Q8SbJTxL.jpg This isn't the brand that I use but you can find something similar at Petco or most other pet stores. Just make sure to drop some floating plant life on top (does't matter if it is fake or real) and surround the box with plant life as well so that she can have her privacy. Does she still look super large and dilated? If so, you may have may more babies coming soon! :)

Dana Marie Yes it Will because her stomach still huge , yes I've separated the baby to the nano tank in my room. I'm still waiting for more !

I suggest separating the mother as well to the nano tank...but only if you can do so without stressing her out too much and after adding some floating foliage to the nano tank....All my fish moms are mainly third generation at this point and they are super tame and ultimately un- phased by a quick and gentle tank transfer. Also, I have found that for the most part, Platys are less disposed to eating their own fry. It's the mollys that tend to be a bit more unpredictable. You are the best person to judge the temperament of your fish family :) Please keep me posted on how everything goes!! :)

Is she swimming up and down in the front of the tank when she knows she is about to be fed or in a back corner of the tank and otherwise fairly uninterested in food? :)

Yes. They do. And if you happen to have any other types of tropical fish in your aquarium, theres a good chance the other fish might try to eat them as well. It's always the safest bet to transfer the babies from the breeding box to a separate small tank for a bit, until they are big enough to rejoin the larger tank. From experience, we left the babies with the adults, we just made sure they had plants to hide in, we think the ate some of the fry, bcs they can have a lot, and we only had 5. But now when the babies where a few months old the mated with each other and know the babies had babies! We now have about 30 babies, soon to have more! So you definitely can leave the babies with the adults, just make sure to have lots of plants to hide in. Even if your fish eat their fry, you will most likely have some left, and they'll have babies! Hope this helps

I have been trying to get my girls to produce babies for several months now. I don't understand why I have none. I have 5 females and 2 males, the 2 males died about a week ago. My females are getting fat with pregnancy but then I'll check and she was skinny again and no fry. I have a heater in the tank, I have the fry plenty of places to hide. I have 3 really fat females now, hoping for them to give me some babies. I'm just waiting it out again.

Never mind my brain is destroyed, I thought Apple fritter was a Molly this whole time, now I’m starting to question if my other fish are platies

She might be stressed and hiding in spots like behind ornaments

You can tell by the fins just under the tail, females have fan shaped ones and males have thinner more triangular ones with a longer bottom
