I have watched a lot of your videos. As a lifetime movie buff who happens to be a straight man it has been great for me to hear both of your views on movies, to connect with gay culture, to see and respect it as another culture in the world worthy of respect, and to have a lens on the two of you. I love to see people in love. Peace.

I feel like I understood Marion. She was wrong to turn Patrick in but I think she was just so extraordinarily naïve that she really didn’t understand the repercussions and I think she was just so shocked when she saw Tom and Patrick together, on her honeymoon no less. I worked with a woman 30 years ago whose husband came out to her after 10+ years of marriage and two kids. At the time, she was so angry and felt betrayed. At that time people thought being gay was a choice. My friend never could understand why her then ex husband had thrown their life together away. Both Marion and Tom seemed to blame Patrick because they were both desperate to deny the reality of the situation.

i liked your guys review and your take on it, but i will disagree with you regarding the harry part since hes always dressed however he wants his mom even talk about him always wanting to dress up or wear his sister clothes and so on when he was younger and growing up he's always been comfortable in his own skin. don't see how people always assume its a marketing strategy or queerbaiting when he's always just been true to himself i feel like people should be able to wear what they want and always people dont owe people anything regarding sexuality and shouldn't be bullied into coming out either to please others like kit connor situation where he got builled into coming out just bc people saw him with a girl when bi people exist like. people use what he wears and how he "acts" as "evidence" when all is it based on stereotypes when you cant dress or act a sexuality. i did think david dawson was amazing hes a great actor same with emma i thought they played their roles every well as well the other but for this being harrys 3 movie he did good and i like it better then dwd. but will also disgree on your view of tom like ' a victim of his time, a victim of society and it's weird and wrong to say he's a manipulator. when He hings because he's obv scared, because he's trying to convince himself that what he's feeling isn't real, because he's scared on top of everything to lose his career and most importantly he does/says certain things to protect himself. its society back then and now who makes him or people in general do it. Also like, not saying that he loved Patrick is a way of protecting himself knowing he can't go to visit him in prison, etc. the ending was emotional

I, personally do not agree with this review. The point of the film is to focus on the time wasted by Tom not being able to accept himself. When you are surrounded by nothing but hatred towards who you are, you have no choice but to hate it (and yourself for feeling that way). Obviously, some people, like Patrick, have an easier time getting over that inner-hatred and can finally accept who they are, but the beauty of focusing on Tom is that you can see how difficult it is to accept yourself and your identity when it is hated and viewed as abnormal. This is also relevant to today with individuals being forced to closet themselves and having to ultimately become comfortable in the closet because they can't accept who they are outwardly. I see Tom not as selfish, but as deeply confused and scared while trying to accept himself. I see his wife as very manipulative. Especially when she speaks to her friend about homosexuality and changed her entire opinion on the friend in seconds when she came out to her. I encourage everyone to watch the movie and make their own opinions because it is truly beautiful and so emotional. When Patrick walks up the stairs to find Tom drunk by his doorstep because he is just so confused by his own being and also longing what he knows is his love is a crucial point in the film.

I see the exact opposite. Tom is the selfish man who dragged an innocent woman into his closet and went on to have a relationship behind her back . Tom could have stayed single like David but chose not to. Marion's actions were out of desperation and dejection faced. She felt betrayed by Tom and David who were robbed of her potential real love she could have had with someone else. Divorced women was a stigma back then. She kept silent even after she finds out the truth but reached a breaking point when David selfishly rubbed their homosexual relationship on her face by sending her postcard of their Paris vacation as a mockery. Paris was a dream place Marion wanted to visit with Tom which she shared with David before marriage. It was the sense of betrayal which led to Marion's actions. I empathize with her. Tom was the manipulative one

shaynalynn431 I broadly agree with you, but it was not just a question of Tom accepting himself - it was the knowledge, especially as he was a policeman and knew the law, that in accepting himself, he would be a criminal,. What he wanted, and needed could land him in prison. Imagine living with that knowledge. We saw how Patrick was treated in prison - Tom would have got it worse, because prisoners see policeman as "the enemy". It is not surprising there were so many suicides, even in professions where homosexuality was broadly accepted.

It’s certainly interesting to see gay men who weren’t alive even close to this time frame comment. As someone who came of age a decade later, I absolutely get Tom. I understand the motivations and actions. Not that I cheated or would have but lots of gay men and lesbians were torn like that. Most people don’t know what it was like to come of age in the 50s and 60s and even the 70s.

@@nightwishisthegreatestband6355 okay, she was lied to, but did she need to report the guy to the fucking police??? He was lucky he wasn't killed with all the abuse he suffered, the prison isn't just a walk in the park, also at that time a lot of people considered gay man worse than any other criminal, to reconstruct your life after that is almost impossible. So, yeah, she was lied to, but she could've get out of it, meanwhile Patrick will never be the same after all the trauma.

@aintnobody3000 Год назад
@@amandalopes3048 I’m with you! I’m so surprised at how this is so glossed over. I consider this an act of violence. She couldn’t hurt Patrick herself, so she called in the authorities to do it. Even when she confessed to Tom, she said she felt bad but still had to point out that she was lied to. That does not justify her actions. Also notice how She still had to make sure she left that wedding picture on the dresser in the opening scene. Also-- that time jump leaves me so confused. So did Marion just kinda stalk Patrick for years, keeping tabs on his whereabouts? Cuz Tom was too busy burying his feelings.

This is such a beautiful take! I find it very interesting that you’d like to hear more of Marion’s perspective! I read this book like a decade ago and it is one that I’ve read many times over. I totally agree that this story should’ve been more through the eyes of Patrick & Marion. The book gives you a great image of who they are and I feel as if Tom is more of an enigma. Most characters throughout this story are talking about him and their relationship dynamics with him. I thought Tom’s character would be a smaller part... until it was Harry Styles. The movie is very basic, It didn’t really do anything.. which is unfortunate. Because this is such a compelling story, that deserves to be told (that is based on real people, English author E.M. Forster & a married policeman, Robert Buckingham) there was just a lot of things that missed the mark, left unsaid or were not in the book to begin with and just added nothing to the story. Almost always a bummer when a book you love becomes a movie. I don’t hate the movie, it just falls short of what I was hoping.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but I find it really unsettling that you as gay men only describe Tom as a 'selfish manipulator' and say 'we don't need to understand him'. He's clearly a victim of his time, a victim of society and a victim of his own mind, and it's too simplistic and frankly just wrong to say he's a manipulator. He does certain things because he's afraid, because he's trying to convince himself that what he's feeling isn't real, because he's scared on top of everything to lose his career and most importantly he does/says certain things to protect himself. Thank you for this review, gentlemen! The movie sounds very bland, probably will watch it if nothing better is on. Speaking of book adaptations though, have you ever heard of the two Chinese tv dramas The Untamed and Word of Honor? They're based on Chinese gay romance novels (the genre is called "danmei" in Chinese). The book The Untamed is based on is especially popular (Mo Dao Zu Shi, or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, by author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu... they've actually been officially translated and published in English recently). If you have free time, both series are worth a watch...they're on YT here with Eng subs. The central romances had to be tone down due to censorship but I think the relationships are still pretty blatantly clear. I should warn you though the special efx leaves much to be desired due to budget constraints (esp in terms of The Untamed...Word of Honor fared better) but I think the stories, performances, costumes, and set designs overcome that weakness.

Of course the real villain in this story is an oppressive society that doesnt allow for people to live their lives. This all leads to these characters lives being warped, time and potential wasted. Who could they have been if they were free? How many others have we lost in this way? Marion is a controlling and manipulative person who did not hesitate to bring down the power of the state/ against Patrick. In my opinion, this is an act of violence that I cannot forgive. I get that she is also trapped in a society that tells her that she needs to be married. So she latched on to someone who gave her a tad bit of attention and stuck with it even tho he was clearly not fully present. It’s better to be in a loveless marriage than to be a spinster. Interestingly, Tom had no voice in the book. He is silent, I guess representative of repressed men of that time. He is a coward. He also feels the pressure to perform heteronormativity and strings Marion along for the sake of his career and personal safety. Because he can, he’s so darn handsome. She’ll just accept whatever little bit of himself he gives and he knows this. He’s too scared to follow his heart, with understandable reasons. His character and situation is just sad to me, but I can understand his motives. Patrick is the only character that tries to live honestly and you see where that leads him. Marion bringing Patrick into the house is just another controlling move. Notice how she is sure to leave the wedding picture on the dresser in the opening scene. Does he want to be there? Is he ok with her just reading his journals. Does Tom want him there. She even decides when Patrick & Tom can finally just have each other. I wonder how gay men of that generation are reacting to this movie.

Finally someone summarized exactly how I felt about this film. When you do the past, flash forward type of film, there needs to be a flow to it and I felt like this was choppy and there were a lot of things left out regarding Marion that I would've like to have seen explored. This would've been better as a limited series. I think that this film actually had great potential but I agree that the ending seem rushed. The last scene was quite emotional. All 3 of them were victims because of choices and circumstance. I don't see Marion as a villain the way some people are portraying her. She was right in saying they all destroyed each other. The ending is a tragedy. It was time lost. The director showing a young Tom at the end with Patrick really reinforced how devastating time lost is. But overall, yeah...the movie was ok. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. "Basic" was the perfect word.

I think you’re oversimplifying Tom’s plight. Unless you were alive at the time you can’t really understand what he and all of them went through. None of them are blameless. I don’t think I side with any of them but I do feel sympathy towards all of them. Even though I find this difficult in Marion’s situation given the fact that she turned Patrick in. The outcome could have been so much worse. His former lover was beaten to death. That very well could have happened to Patrick as well. I’m also fucking done with the queer baiting accusations against Harry and other REAL people. That’s not what queer baiting is. It’s meant to be for fictional characters. Not to mention not once has Harry said oh by the way I’m straight. I think someone wanting to remain unlabeled especially in the public eye is a valid choice and should be respected. Their is no time limit on when someone comes out and nobody OWES anyone else an explanation about one’s sexuality. That is personal and belongs to the individual.

Well, that's just stupid to take her POV out of the picture, I haven't read the book yet. But I guess it's another one of those films, where the book is better. I always figured that Tom is supposed to be this kinda empty shell of a character because they are both living half a life with him and he's using these two people for his own selfish bs. They have very different versions of Tom they know and share their life with. So he's supposed to be a blank slate for them to see what they want to see in, at least that's what I'm guessing from everything I have heard about the book. Where the lover and wife are supposed to be thoroughly flushed out people because they're telling each side of their story.

Ten or so years ago, this film would have been poignant, and perhaps meaningful. But in light of where we are societally when it comes to queer love stories, the film feels tired, and is made on well tread territory. "The man in the Orange shirt" already did this story. Did we need THIS story? No. But I think a story with just Tom and Patrick navigating the hostile environment of the time would have been more entertaining.

The entire time I was viewing the review, I was thinking that this story sounds very familiar. I’ve seen a movie similar to this one but I couldn’t recall the name of it. I read your comment and you named it! “The Man In The Orange Shirt” I enjoyed that movie but this one sounds like it may not be as good.

I came back her to say that I just watched ‘man in an orange shirt’ and it is very good.
@IExpectedBSJustNotThisMuchBS
Just watched The Man in the Orange Shirt after reading your comment and have a different perspective. We watch period pieces all the time. Both are period pieces. That they have a marriage in common is no different from all the gay men and women I met at 39 (when I came out) who like me had been married. So marriage and beards or discovering one is gay after marriage (or learning that marriage didn’t arrest same sex desire) would likely figure into many love stories of a period-a long period. The interpersonal dynamics are different in many ways, though both women come to regret thinking they could save their marriages, and expected in some ways. The trauma experienced in the Orange Shirt ends up being generational. The thing they most have in common is the cottage (it’s the same one as far as I can tell). I enjoyed both, including the sweeping romance music of the Orange Shirt, which would have been typical of movies made in that era (a fun nod to the era). I was more moved by My Policeman, however, Likely the acting and because it felt more like a movie theatre movie (I’m sounding like Harry Styles) and less like a made for TV movie like Orange Shirt. Also, I liked that we got to see all of the characters later in life. As someone who lived the repressed desire and effortful denial portions of the story, I personally related more to My Policeman and that also contribute to my liking it more. For me one of the shocking things about My Policeman being set in 1957/58 is that they were 13 years out after fighting a war against fascism and in the UK they were still sending men to prison for sex with other men. The 50s was considered such a modern progressive time by the people living in it. I agree, however, it would have been nice to see a period piece of a male and/or female couple trying to navigate a life through this time period. That’s part of what we’re seeing in the series A League of Their Own.

Can you be there for him to wear dresses and dress feminine and things like that? Doesn’t that imply that stereotypes are true and that the only reason he could ever possibly be wearing addresses to appear homosexual? Maybe he just likes dresses. If he was constantly flirting with men or kissing them in his music videos or something like that and then refusing to say he was anything but straight OK but why does he really done besides clothes? It just annoys me because I’m a woman who has always preferred to dress in more androgynous clothing or more kind of punk… And one time I was in this self-help group and a gay guy told me I’m “not going to meet a boyfriend bc [I] dress like a lesbian” … (ironically after I mentioned having never really been interested in romance and always feeling like ppl think it’s bc I’m undesirable when in reality it was never due to lack of options) but he wasn’t being as mean as he sounds lol it was like a weird exercise. Anyway, it didn’t hurt my feelings because I’m self-aware and I know how I dress but it annoyed me because as a gay man how can you say that’s the way someone dresses dictates their sexuality?!

I couldn't agree more. I just finished watching this film and was so disappointed! Especially, after hearing it was a book adaptation and that the source material was so well received; or maybe it just entered my social media spheres when Harry Styles was announced to be a leading role. I feel like the whole movie felt so flat and 2D, and underdeveloped. Each of the three main characters come across as selfish, hurtful and thoughtless and just keep acting in their own self interests and then ask for atonement or sulk for decades. It would have been a much more interesting story, if as you say there was some narrativised character development. I thought in the first 20 mins of the film the three might form a menage a trois and we;d get to see hoe Marion and Patrick navigate both loving Tom, while forming their own relationship, even non-ramatic-/sexual-ly, but there could still be the climax and fallout from Patrics arrest. From what you say about the book it sounds emotionally a lot more complex, so I might give it a go! Thanks, for sharing your thoughts in such an articulate manner and with so many cinematic references xx

Nowadays, it's acceptable! I was involved in a relationship as such. I wives do not care if their husband sleeps or have a relationship with another man, as long as they don't have a relationship with another woman. It was explained to me that women take from each other. (The money and the man from the home environment.) The marriage law must change with the day and times that we are living. It will accommodate bisexuality. Eventhough this is a book it makes a strong point to love and beloved.

This movie seems like a ripoff of "Man in an Orange Shirt". If you haven't seen it, do so. They even used the same English country cottage.

I think My Policeman was written a few years before Man In An Orange Shirt, but there are certainly similarities, not least both of the gay men being in institutions (police and army) where homosexuality was even more despised than in civilian life.

I just saw it and I just would like to point out whether you'd agree that this wouldve been a much more interesting movie if the three of them were mingled together? Also the two nasty-er things that he did to her which were Venice and saying that he wanted her to stay home with their future children feel like they come out of nowhere for the character. Is it just that it is rushed and plot holey? Also, about H's queerbaity thing...with these two movies he released this year did he finally come out as bi or what?

I wouldn’t watch this movie. I didn’t like Nick’s focus on the woman in the story; She sounds awful. The gay love story should be the focus. You didn’t make it sound like a love story at all.

I feel Patrick was so problematic. He said "He is so innocent" and I feel like he wanted to defile him because of it.There were times when Tom says "No!", but Patrick persists. He Patrick should have bowed out when Tom made the choice to marry Marion but he persisted; he took Tom to Venice, I just had such a problem with him.
@aintnobody3000
@aintnobody3000 Год назад
Having Tom say no at the beginning of their intimate scenes was a bad choice. I don’t know about ‘defile’.. that word carried a lot of weight. I’ll have to think on that. It could be my memory but I don’t remember this aspect in the book. I don’t fault Patrick for continuing to be with Tom though. That really was part of the reality of closeted life in an oppressive society. Obviously not ideal, but he was in love and love was hard to find and never safe in throes days.

I think brendaromero2990 makes an excellent point. When I saw the film, my impression was that Tom was a virgin, and hadn't had sex with a woman, still less a man, and it was his virginity that Patrick wanted to take away. That said, obviously the were both willing.

Casting Harry Stlyes in a leading role is smack in the face to real actors who have been denied this role. Harry is NOT an actor . Purely a PR stunt because Harry Styles sales right now ! The dreadful performance from Styles ruined what could have been a powerful story.
@algiles881

darren that is I think deeply unfair. "real" actors might have overplayed Tom, and he would have been unbeliveable. Harry Styles gives a naturalistic performance, and is streets ahead of "real actors" like the man who plays "Steve" in Coronation Street. I just single him out as an especially egregious example of bad acting - there are many others.
