Speaking in tongues is one of the most divisive issues within the body of Christ today. Christians are divided over the issue. Can everyone speak in tongues? Do Christians who speak or pray in tongues have more power than those that don't? Can you pray for the gift of tongues? Can you pray in tongues without an interpreter? Is tongues promised to every believer? These and many other similar questions will be explored and answered in this 4-part mini-series on 1 Corinthians 14.

What's up BEAT fam? So, as you all know, we are in a series going through 1 Corinthians called Church Gone Wild. Well, as we approach the very controversial chapter 14 involving tongues and prophecy, I decided to do a mini-series of 4 videos addressing this ever so complex subject. So, this is video #1 of 4 in this mini-series on tongues and prophecy. Let me know your thoughts. Enjoy!

Chapter 12: God assigns the roles. The Holy Spirit matches the gifts to the roles. Chapter 12: The gifts are for building up each other. Chapter 13: The gifts are tools of love (for others, not self). There’s more to the context of 14:4 than verse 5. Verse 5: Tongues, properly used, serves the same purpose (defined in the previous two chapters) as prophesy, edifying the church.

Brother Allen I’m looking for a response from you concerning the Pentecostal faith, which I have left, but concerning their belief that you don’t even have the Holy Spirit unless you’re speaking in tongues I strongly disagree and would like to know your take on that according to scripture. They claim it’s the only evidence you have God‘s Holy Spirit in you, negating any other fruit of the spirit’ of the which tongues is not even a fruit of the spirit ,that’s what bothers me.

The "tongues" that were spoken by the disciple's, on what is called Pentecost, were known languages of the day, to the people from various countries that came to Jerusalem to the Passover feast. The people were amazed that they were being spoken to in their own language. Acts Chapter 2, verse 3 through 13. In 1 Corinthians Chapter 12, verses 29 through 31, and especially verse 30 "All do not have the gifts of healing, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? (NASB). The verses here in Corinthians say not everyone is gifted with everything, it says "all do not"...and ends with, "do they?" So we can conclude that "speaking in tongues" is not what every believer is gifted to do. Then comes the question, is speaking in tongues speaking in a known language, or can it be gibberish, known only to the person speaking and to the Lord? The Bible says if one is not there to interpret, then it is best to keep quiet. The disciples, at Pentecost, spoke in known languages, not gibberish. So...fasten your seatbelt, here comes the discussion, I am sure.

When I went to Africa , Ghana I was asked to say a prayer in front of the church. I was around 25 at the time. I felt this mighty power (God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit take over in a powerful but gentle way!) I started to speak in "tongue" aka (to me sounds gibberish or unknown) I had a translater there who was suppose to translate for me (english to tri, I cant remember the language) All of this sudden he stopped. All of the village started shouting and raising their hands to God! After my prayer I asked "why didn't you translate for me?" The Pastor said because you spoke their language!!!! Hallelujah!!! I have a personal testimony. This did NOT happen to someone else - it happened to ME. I testify that this is 100% true and I apologize that explaining it fully means a few extra words. I was a new but committed disciple of Jesus when I first began speaking in "gibberish?" other tongues. I knew not what I was saying but I clearly felt prompted to do so. A few months after that began to be part of my prayer and worship life, I happened to be visiting a large church (almost 1000 people) when there was a worship time that went silent - and someone spoke out in another "gibberish?" tongue. I "FELT" like I knew exactly what they said. After they had finished the audience awaited an interpretation and my heart was in my throat with fear because I knew what it was - but I had doubt. Was this really The Holy Spirit or was it my mind? After about 30 seconds (an eternity when The Holy Spirit is prompting you and you are fighting) the pastor gave the interpretation. IT WAS ALMOST TO THE EXACT WORDS - VERBATIM to what I had understood. I apologized to God for not trusting him, and thanked him for the lesson that I learned. God's ways are NOT meant for the carnal mind to understand. They are meant for the humble servant to grow in faith in Him.

But then, there is the plain reading of what Paul said. He did not stutter, nor did he forbid it in context. He said IF it happens in church, THEN let there be an interpretation. Sounds to me like the conditions were met. And I don't use a prayer language other than English. I will say there is a marked difference in what he described and the clear manifestation of Kundalini spirits and disorderly hysterical laughter that should rightly be shunned.

I agree with Ivan that it’s not gibberish but an actual language. I can testify first hand my experience. My wife is Baptist and I’m Pentecostal. She never understood the gift of speaking in tongues or prophecy and neither did I. One day she was by herself praying to the Lord around 12-1 am with an open heart that if the speaking in tongues are still available for today’s believers then she would love to have that gift. Amazingly she received the speaking in other tongue which is an actual language Portuguese and after she’s done praying in tongues she interprets the tongues. How amazing is that!!! A Baptist sister having the gift of speaking in tongues and interpreting the tongues. The Holy Spirit is amazing! She told her mom and she was not happy about it and said that’s impossible but what’s impossible to us is possible to the Holy Spirit. She speaks in tongues only when the Holy Spirit chooses so 2-3 times a month. That’s my wife’s personal experience. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Song praising and worshipping Jesus, my brother wasn't walking with Jesus yet, he was so drawn to the words and worship to The lord, he looked at his friend next to him and said that was the most beautiful music, worship to God he had ever heard before, his friend looked at him puzzled and said yes if only she weren't singing in a language you could understand ,my brother said ,I understood every word clearly, then he was told she was singing in tongues . God used it to get my intellectual brother to know it was super natural , never forgot it ,couldn't explain it , but knew it was from God. Eventually gave his life to the lord.

The first time I prayed in tounges, I started having visions for the next 3 months… people around me started having visions or randomly break out into praise or just start prophesying, even when I was at work; then they would look puzzled and ask what just happened… also I noticed that when I would pray for people in English, not even 3 words later they would start crying like a baby, grown men and women. That is when I realized that when we consistently pray in tongues at home in private, our spirit is so edified by the power of the Holy Spirit that an overflow of his love and mercy pours out of you and touches everyone around.. when that happens, that is when their hearts are ready for the simple gospel of Jesus. But with that edification; spiritual warfare comes also.. be prepared for demons to step to you face to face literally and sleepless nights. When this happens certain scriptures you thought was just a metaphor will start to make real life sense. I’m not saying this to scare anyone from praying in tongues, I’m just saying this so you can know to expect a battle at some point and not think your crazy and suffering from sone mental disease. When that happens just keep trusting in Jesus and continuing to press into edification because edified is the last thing the devil wants you to be. He will even tell you or try to get you to believe that if you stop praying, he will end his battle with you. Just remember to be courageous like David or Sampson was when in war.

A few months later she was praying quietly in a service and afterward a woman came up to her and said that my mom had been glorifying God in Spanish. My daughter was a semi undercover missionary to Iceland for 8 years. She lived in a remote village near the Arctic Circle. She was the only Christian there. It was a very spiritually dark place and she daily encountered evil and was constantly in spiritual warfare for these people. One night she was agonizing in prayer over them. Praying and being so distraught in her heart for their souls. She was literally crying out loud to Christ to save them and it became so intense she could not form words anymore. As she was wailing over them, her wails became a language she didn’t know. It flowed out of her like a river. It ministered to her greatly. She knew this language was given to her from God . She knew God was inhabiting her petitions as she spoke. So much broke that night in Heaven and on earth for that village. The next day she looked up words she remembered speaking. It. Was. Hebrew. I have never considered myself better than anyone and never will. I was sitting at my desk with worship music playing and i was singing. All of a sudden i felt the Spirit of God on me and i began to speak in tongues just as naturally as i spoke in my own language, only i didn't understand. I have been speaking in tongues ever since in my personal times of prayer and worship and even when I'm at church and the music is high and no one can hear me or with my lips moving. It has never been uncontrollable so that it juat bursts out. Never when singing lead during corporate worship, although if God chose to do so i am confident that He would have someone interpret, but ita never happened to me personally. Said all that to say, a lot of people fake and are out of order, including many worship leaders. I have felt God’s power and was encouraged and strengthed after every time. I don't always pray in tongues even alone, but when i do it is powerful and never the same phrases on repeat. It is a conversation that i feel with every fiber that is directed to God alone. I can also clearly know, by the Holy Spirit, when people are faking it. I have never let anyone dissuade me with their unbelief or misinterpretation because i know what happens is from God.

I got saved when I was 18 and was taken into the back room of my church to receive prayer and to talk in tongues, it didn't come. I didn't know it at the time but I was in a church with the wrong doctrine. I eventually fell off and left and was very wishy washy in my faith until my 30's. That's when I found the true gospel of grace and realised I was redeemed forever. Now solid in my faith I still wasn't able to pray in tongues but I was okay with it as my relationship with the Lord was growing. Fast forward to 2022, i'm now 38 years old and I ask God, if there is anything I am placing above you please let me know and i'll lay it down at your feet. At the time I was very into planners and planning and I loved doing things my way. When the Lord showed me this, I packed up hundreds of pounds worth of planners I had purchased and threw them all away. I told the Lord I'm sorry for making my love of planning an idol over you. That very same day I was going about my day as normal. I was laying on my bed reading my bible and felt led to pray for my neighbour. It was during this pray that I started crying, I couldn't stop. I cried till bogey started dripping from my nose. I tried to say Jesus and that's when I started talking in tongues. I sounded like someone from the middle east. My 14 year old son ran into the room (this child never gets of his ps5) I could hear him asking me if i was okay but I couldn't stop. (Side note i'm not the type of person that cries in front of people, I was quite prideful on that front). I will never forget or can fully contextualise that experience but it has humbled me greatly. Do I continue to speak in tongues, no. but when I'm listening to sermons online, sometimes my spirit makes my body tingle in agreement to a word I heard from the gospel. To the born again believer that's reading this. Don't feel down or inadequate whether you speak in tongues or not. Finding the grace of God which is in Jesus Christ is all that really matters.

I totally agree, but we must also seek God’s understanding through prayer and even fasting if needs be. I surmise why a lot of misinterpretation of God’s holy scriptures exists is because human beings are reading with their physical mind as they would a man made novel. There is the biggest mistake we make. God’s words are spiritually written, so we must arm ourselves spiritually to gain wisdom, incite and correct understanding.

The apostle Paul claimed to pray in tongues more than anyone of his time, so you’re wrong. 1 Corinthians 4:18. The issue is that people want to glory in it or do not understand when to keep it quiet. Also some say if you don’t do it, then you don’t know God at all. Stuff like that either demonstrates a lack of knowledge (failure to study or new to faith), false teachings, pride, or some such issue that’s causing confusion. It’s more a private gift than a public one, but if interpreted (either by native speakers, like in Acts, or by the same Spirit that gives the utterance of the words). Either way, when in doubt keep it quiet so and personal. It’s not something you “learn” and it’s not something you present, it’s something God does. If you learned “how to,” as in took lessons from a person, then it’s not from God. There’s a place for the gift of tongues. It doesn’t say choose tongues OR prophecy. It says to desire prophecy more than tongues, because prophecy builds up the entire church. It makes sense to build up yourself at home and prophecy in church. Some people act like the gift of tongues is the “it” gift, meaning you know God. Scripture doesn’t consider it as such, it’s a lesser gift. NOT an unimportant one or one to discard. In fact if it is from God you can’t discard it, because you’re not the one producing it. Yes, you have control over how loud you speak it or whether you open your mouth or not, in that respect you may allow Him to do so or constrain Him from doing so by being unwilling. Why would anyone put away a spiritual gift God gave them and then expect a greater gift to be given? The Scripture doesn’t say don’t desire to speak in tongue, it says find it in yourself to desire to prophecy to the glory of God so that the entire church can benefit from congregating together and prevent confusion when unbelievers show up.

I have heard Justin peters say that having a prayer language isn't real. But I had prayed for an awakening of the Holy Spirit within me and had also read the book "9 o'clock in the morning" about an episcopal priest out on the west coast who had experienced that and experienced having a prayer language. I believe mine is real and I feel supernatural things happening when I am praying in my prayer language… It's not for me to understand it... it is the Holy Spirit doing the praying and I am accommodating in faith. I feel things lifted off of me when I'm doing that. I also feel like the Spirit within me is trying to reach out to heaven during those times. I don't do it in front of other people because praying in an unknown language doesn't edify the church and it doesn't edify anyone. It's personal… It's private between me and God. but it's real and I have found myself delivered at times while praying in this way.

I grew up in a tongue speaking church and for many years i couldn't speak in tongues ( prayer language). Every Friday night was a prayer night. In our prayer nights, it was more about intercession ( interceding for others most especially our communities and country for the sake of the gospel). We used to pray for hours! Starting from 10 pm to 5 am in the morning. But for a person like me who couldn't pray in prayer language ( tongues), it was tough! I could pray for some minutes and then went out of words, but those who could pray in prayer language ( tongues) could pray for hours without ceasing!!! I really felt left out! I could see everyone in corners very focused on prayers for hours without getting tired or getting asleep. One day i cried out to God and asked him to give the gift of praying in tongues, so that i can also be able to intercede for that long. It was one day, when i really started to pray in tongues after really focus on the needs of others rather than my own problems and before i knew it, i was speaking in tongues! I was always starting in my own language then switch to tongues in intercession. What really amazed me is, i could understand what i was praying for in spirit and then switch to my normal language to pray about that issue intensively. One day i was arrested by officers at the airport on my way to minister in a church,i was trying to ask them what i did wrong but they couldn't listen and i was about to miss my flight. Suddenly i heard a voice in my heart telling to pray in tongues ( in silence) after praying like about 5 minutes, the officers just let me go and even apologized, till now i never understood what was happening in the spiritual world. PRAYING IN TONGUES CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!!

How does this "build you spiritually" when you don't even know what you're talking about, or if the babbling has ANY content at all? Paul says it is speaking mysteries into the air, without understanding, and it is unfruitful. How does this glorify God? Are known tongues inferior to meaningless glossolalia, which is often just a few syllables repeated over and over? This "heavenly" childlike gibberish was NEVER used as a "gift of tongues " by biblical people like the apostles or Jesus. This false gift was out of control in Corinth, which was why Paul wrote the rebuke in 1 Corinthians 14. Read that whole chapter and see if Paul thought everyone should pray to God in strange tongues.

@@DD-bj8bt You must be referring to the glossalalia version, the counterfeit Paul discouraged in 1 Corinthians 14. The biblical tongues, one of the nine gifts as the apostles had at times, are not "learned." It just happens by the holy spirit when needed to convey the gospel. No true tongue gift was ever used alone, and no tongue was to be used without being understood by an audience or an interpreter. The phenomenon of people craving the counterfeit of "prayer language " is not the Bible "gift," as it does not meet the requirements. God is multilingual and hears normal prayers like Jesus prayed just fine without a strange tongue, and the praying person understands fruitfully. This coveted desire to speak mysteries into the air is strongly discouraged by Paul, yet many twist a verse or two out of context to claim this is a good thing to try to do. Very likely the wrong spirit is involved.

I prayed for months for the gift of tongues (praying in a language only understood by God for the purpose of prayer// allowing the Spirit to intercede and speak through me). I thought that God would not give it to me or it wasn’t meant for me and that I’d never receive it. I realized that it was I who was lacking faith. Whoever has the Holy Spirit has access to ALL the gifts of the Spirit because it is not them who manifests the gifts, it is the Lord. Now with all the gifts we don’t have them all at the same time. I’ve heard it compared to a toolbox, you use one or two tools at a time *as the Father needs*, you don’t take all the tools out at once, or you wouldn’t use a hammer to tighten a bolt. We don’t all prophesy and heal and cast out demons and speak in known tongues and interpret all at once. The Spirit gives manifestation of the gifts as appropriate and also according to faith. For your prayer language, pray earnestly and open your mouth to speak in faith and the Holy Ghost will take it from there. Now I spend the majority of my prayer time praying in tongues, that my spirit prays. Blessings to you, brother in Jesus Christ ❤

Even when talking about spiritual manifestations, the first manifestation anyone should think about is to produce the fruits of the spirit and living aright with the help of the Holy Spirit. All these are more important than speaking in tongues. Jesus said if we love him, we should keep his commandments and Paul said a person that speaks in tongues without knowing love is a noise maker.

This was a very balanced and informative intro to the topic of tongues. As a person who is both intellectual and spiritual, I believe in a balance of the two. Problems arise when we lean too much one way or another and it can cause serious divisions in the church. We get puffed up thinking we have the answers and the others are blind or ignorant. Come, let's reason together! Because unity is what God cares about first and foremost. I, myself, have charismatic leanings on this topic, but that wasn't always so. But I have seen the benefit of exercising a personal prayer language, and now God has called me to a Baptist church that does not often raise this topic and I feel the Holy Spirit has asked me to remain silent on this topic in corporate worship for now. We have to be sensitive to the spirit because doing things for our own ego's sake will not be blessed by God or used for his glory. And isn't that the ultimate goal? We must be discerning and obedient. "My brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love." We don't know if Jesus spoke in tongues when he prayed the Bible never states whether he did or didn't. I am going to assume it was possible. However Pentecost did not happen until AFTER Jesus ascended into Heaven. This represented the Comforter that Jesus spoke about in John 15 and several other scriptures. As fotlr the Lord's Prayer Jesus was teaching us HOW to pray. How we approach Father God, this was an example not something we have to recite verbatim. We CAN do that. Our Father who art in Heaven ....... go before God recognizing WHO he is, giving him glory and honor, believing he is the ONLY Living God. Worship him with your whole being. Give us this day our daily bread: Make your needs be known, Forgive our trespasses as we forgive others...... ask for forgiveness of sins, confess weaknesses and sins, forgive others and pray for them also Lead us not into temptation..... asking God for guidance and direction, and protection, for EVERYONE not just yourself. For Thine is the kingdom...... Father God I KNOW that you have the power to do this, this is Your world.... Amen, hope this helps. Have a beautiful day

@@terryvest906 so when Jesus spoke through time to tens of billions of future people, a personal prayer language was not mentioned or even alluded to. That seems like a major oversight considering entire Christian denominations use personal prayer languages as a key tenet to their faith practices and even suggest lack of salvation for anyone not gifted with the tongue.

@ Tavian McGee No Biblical subject shoula catually be complicated. We are the ones who complicate things because we understand scripture according to our Theological perespective. If one pushes a particular narrative long enough, his followers will embrace that position and any attempts to get them to see otherwise is futile as it is not the position of their preferred Preacher. If only we could embrace the Berean spirit "go home and search the scriptures to see if those things spoken are so", we would be very different. We do everything except subject our Preacher to what the scripture actually says. Maybe ALL Believers on this platform must pray to receive the Berean Gift " Hear the word preached, go home and search the scriptures to see if what was spoken is so". If not in line with our understanding of scripture, engage the Preacher. A Truly called Servant of God will not find offense in being asked to clarify what they preached in line with our searching

I appreciate your exegetical approach to this topic. I grew up in a charismatic church that tipped the scales to the unhealthy emotionalistic side and was often told there was something wrong with me because I did not get carried away by the Holy Spirit, speak in tongues, or get "slain in the spirit." My parents "taught" me how to speak in tongues, but it always felt contrived and fake. Sometimes, I saw people act weirdly while claiming to be influenced by the Holy Spirit, such as the speaking of tongues. Someone close to me used to pray in tongues, and their eyes would flutter, and their hands would shake while they prayed in tongues, repeating the same gibberish syllables. Sometimes when they did so, I often felt uncomfortable or creeped out and wanted to run away from them. This same person was emotionally, physically, and religiously abusive, even sometimes sexually inappropriate when far away from the eyes of the church and the public. I believe some people may become swept away in emotionalism or religious fervor because of a subconscious urge to feel important or powerful. I also think believers can be swept away and deceived by the spirits of the Enemy if we aren't careful. As a young adult, I once visited a church where a woman stood up and began speaking in tongues with no interpreter. As I listened, I felt the urge to flee. Even though I was not very biblically literate, I found myself turning to 1st Corinthians 14, and when I read it, I knew it was likely not of the Lord that that person was speaking. The experience was life-changing, and I think it was God who gave me that passage of scripture, especially since I was not very familiar with that book and had not really studied the Bible outside of church or youth group. A friend with extensive Biblical training pointed me to 1 John 4:1-3. "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess [a]that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming and is now already in the world." (NKJV). We need to be careful before we attribute a spiritual manifestation to be from God. As I previously mentioned, I have seen many people claim to have supernatural authority and power that comes from their faith but abuse or corrupt that authority and act unbecoming of a believer when others aren't watching. John 7:15-16 a says " “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits...."(NKJV). I think that's why it's important for believers to be grounded in God's word and not be given over to our emotions. Manifestations of the supernatural such as the gift of tongues, should be tested in accordance with God's word. I believe that God gives the gift of tongues to some for His glory and that others may come to believe in him as so many did at Pentecost and hearing the disciples speak in tongues. I also think, as you mentioned, that it's okay that people pray privately in tongues (or among friends who are comfortable with it) in the presence of God. I know that the Holy Spirit intercedes (Romans 8:26-27) for us when we can only groan in our weakness or do not know what to pray. It's important to understand that some do not feel comfortable with the practice, and it should not be used to question someone's place in the Kingdom or their authenticity of faith. Mr. Parr, I found your handling of the topic to be theologically sound and well-said. Thank you for your due diligence and execution of this video. I came across this video and was prepared to shut it off if it got weird, but you did a great job of explaining and demonstrating what God's word says on this highly controversial topic. I hope I have not been eisegetical in my explanations or views. God bless you for your work and your courage in taking on a difficult topic. I hope many others will find this as refreshing and clarifying as I did. For those who disagree with my views, please understand that I come from a background where I received some religious abuse and saw some really evil things done by people who claimed spiritual authority and maturity in God's Kingdom. I do not endeavor to divide or stir up dissension among brothers and sisters.

I grew up baptist and never really knew about the ability to speak in tongues until I had a friend that was pentecostal. Similarly to some people in the comments for a long time I tried and asked God for the ability and felt like I failed. So many people kept telling me “if you want to activate your heavenly language all you have to do is ask” so I began to get frustrated with God because I kept hearing stories of people who asked and instantly spoke in tongues but it wasn’t happening for me. One day the Lord revealed to me that the reason the gift wasnt activating was because I was asking from a place of false validation. I had met a woman that made me feel like if I’d didn’t speak in tongues then I truly have the Holy Spirit so I kept asking God out of a place of fear feeling like I needed it to be validated, loved, and stamped by him. Once God revealed to me that I’m already his I stopped asking and became at peace. Maybe 10 months later after maturing more in my faith I decided ‘okay God I know I don’t need this as proof but if I’m from heaven and this is my heavenly language I would like to access and activate this form of my prayer life.’ So on a Monday I woke up, took off work, and did and absolute fast where I did not eat for 24 hours. I spent the whole day listening to sermons and reading scriptures and studying the word about tongues. The one thing everything said was to do it in faith! You may think you sound silly, you may think it’s just you and is not the Holy Spirit. But block out those thoughts and continue to just babble the small murmurs that come into your mind and in faith trust the Holy spirit to do the rest. So I sat up in my bed on that Monday. I told the Holy Spirit I trust him. I played some of my favorite Gospel songs and I began to babble the first thing that came into my mind which was “ba” I just kept repeating “ba ba ba ba ba” endlessly. And after maybe 8 minutes one of those “ba’s” turned into full blown tongues! My husband who also grew up baptist also we weary about tongues. I shared with him my experience and sent him the sermons to watch that helped me and 7 days after me on the following Monday as he was praying in the bathroom with God he spoke in tongues for the first time too! I share this to say if activating your heavenly language is something you desire don’t feel defeated, less than, or like you have to give up. The enemy will convince you that this is something you can never do, and when you start the thoughts in your mind will try to convince that you’re crazy and that it’s not really happening. But take it from this small town baptist girl that used to JUDGE people for speaking in tongues and now can herself, God is faithful! Ask in FULL FAITH expecting to receive and start babbling those small murmurs that come into your mind. And don’t give up! I hope this encourages someone today ❤️

Having a heavenly language you activate is not in the Bible. You don't go ba ba ba and suddenly speak in tongues. The Spirit gives the language and you speak it. Not ba ba ba. That is dangerous as cults do the same thing and say their God gave them an utterance. Cults that speak in tongues sound just like our tongues. This is a very dangerous thing and was invented by the charismatic renewal in the 1960s. They taught people to say nonsense syllables until it starts flowing, in other words NO ENGLISH. I would be very careful here, this is not the Biblical gift of tongues. It must be a known language.

@@Michael-le5ph Hi Micheal, thank you for sharing; however, this is my truth. I’m not saying the Ba’s were the tongues. That was me just me in faith saying what came to mind as I invited the Holy Spirit in to lead. And when he did I not longer “ba-ed” nor was I speaking English. We can agree to disagree here and that’s okay! God loves us all and we’re all trying our best and doing our best for him and that’s all that matters. If there’s something more to learn or unlearn I trust that the Lord will lead me, discipline, and educate me. Have a great day ❤️

I recently had a missionary friend who came back to the states and we met up to talk a bit. He told me his amazing testimony of how when he was first going on a missions trip to Brazil, the moment he got off the plane, he could understand Portuguese. After returning from the trip, he determined that this was a sign from God that he needs to move the Brazil. So he packed up and moved to Brazil and he said this time, when he got off the plane, not only could he understand Portuguese, but he could speak it even though he wasn't fluent or had studied the language. He has been a missionary, evangelist and now head pastor of a few small churches in Brazil. Now, this guy is reformed in his doctrine and still is. He has demonstrated great Godly character since I've known him so I don't believe he would lie about something like this. Before hearing his story I would have discounted the notion of speaking in tongues in any way. However, my views have also shifted in that I do believe God gives people the ability to speak in languages that are not their native language for the sake of missions and spreading the Gospel. I'm still not convinced that what is often considered speaking in tongues by Charismatics is legit. Speaking gibberish and making weird repetitive noises is not what I believe the Corinthians were doing. It is obvious there is some sort of heavenly language and some of those believers were allowed to speak it, but I don't believe this is the same as what is claimed as speaking in tongues now. I am a Cessationist in my understanding of the gifts because we have the full account of all we need in Scripture in order to live Christ exalting lives and do the work of the Church. Its not because I don't believe God can do it, but rather that it's not necessary in most cases. I do believe in exceptions as in the case of my missionary friend. God has used him in a mighty way to lead many people in Brazil to know Jesus and live for Him.

My primary concern when I hear stories of this nature is that they are repeated as proof positive by third person enthusiasts. What I mean by this is that this story may be genuine and it may be a fabrication. I have no way to know if Daniel Boswell is a person of truth or loose with the truth and piles on to another's story. This is not an accusation of Daniel, it is simple an acknowledgment of the fact that you are a person that has presented a story and I have no capacity to weigh the claim of the statement against the observed character of your life over time. I have far to often heard claims of miraculous events that have turned out to be a twist or outright fabrication. So can Daniels claim be true, that he heard a testimony of another and it is accurate? Maybe. Then if yes, is the testimony of the friend true and accurate? Once again it may be. I believe God can and does such things. I also know that those bearing the name of Christ have been known to lie. That is not my point of either of these specific individuals, I don't know the character of either in order to support a determination one way or another. My point is simply that I don't find these internet claims particularly helpful or edifying because the varsity of the claim cannot be confirmed. I believe such stories should be reserved for those who truly know you and have access to the individual you are quoting. Am I correct in this approach, well maybe also but I have seen far to much shaming of the Lord through false claims and that does bother me as someone who takes the honor of our Lord seriously. My daughter, who I trust, told me of a missionary, who she trusts, of a man, who he trusted, could miraculously split rocks through prayer. I personally thought, "a little healthy skepticism may be in order." Turns out that the rock splitter was a fraud. Be careful what third party stories you go on to repeat as evidence. We are to be held to a standard of truth speakers and good intentions do not out way repeating a lie. Now this too is a story of a story of a story of a story and you don't know me either, but I believe the point of caution stands either way.

@@k10man62 You make some great points. I don't take many people's claims of miracles seriously. I tend to follow people like Justin Peters who expose many of these lies and false prophecies or miracles. So while its possible my missionary friend could have been lying, knowing his character and that he has faithfully been serving the people of Brazil for over 10 years, I believe he is telling the truth. He stands firm against the prosperity gospel that has a huge hold on many people in Brazil. He's faced many dangers because his primary mission field is the slums. Someone doesn't go through something like that if they don't have a clear calling from God. The ability to understand and then later speak Portuguese was God confirming he was following the right path. Many people have come to know Jesus Christ through his missionary work. Great video, Allen. I’ve been studying this lately and many believe that tongues aren’t for today because we don’t need them anymore. Their reasoning for this is that tongues was for spreading g the gospel and we don’t need that anymore because of the growth of technology and translators and this that and the third. But I was never fully convinced about that because Paul mentions praying in tongues and edifying yourself. That’s not evangelism. So it was brought to my attention recently that tongues were actually never used to preach the gospel. I’ve looked back through it and I can’t find an instance of tongues being used to share the gospel. People cite Pentecost but the problem with that is that the 120 were in the upper room minding their own business worshipping God when the tongues fell on them. They’re weren’t out on the streets preaching the gospel. And by the time Peter started preaching, the text seems to indicate that he was speaking in the common language that everybody understood. So again, no tongues for preaching the gospel. Then some cite the verse about these things ceasing (1 Cor 13:8), but, if you continue reading (always a good habit), it would seem that Paul is referring to a ceasing at Christ’s return, which he has not done yet. So I think tongues are still for today because it was never for evangelism. I’ve never personally prayed in tongues and I’m okay with that. I don’t need that. Might be cool. But I don’t need it. A friend of mine who does pray in tongues explained it this way: you’re praying the perfect will of God. So if that’s true, it would seem that praying in tongues is actually better than not praying in tongues because how many of y’all will confess like me that our prayers are usually pretty self-centered. So if you have the gift to pray in tongues you don’t even know what you’re praying so you may not even be praying for yourself, but you’re praying exactly what God wants you to pray. That’s my current understanding of tongues.

Part of the argument that comes into play is what one believes about the Bible. Do we really believe that the canon of scripture is closed? The argument follows that prophecy and interpretation of tongues that was happening at that time was direct revelation from God. Thus it would have been equivalent with Holy Scripture. even though not all of it was actually written down, it was still direct revelation. Once the canon was closed, there is no more new revelation. The concept of sola scriptura comes into play here. It is the scripture alone that is all we need to live our life before God. It is how God has decided to communicate with us today. If we believe that we cannot take away from the scriptures or add to them, I think we play with fire by allowing all of this so called modern day prophecy. It simply is adding to the word of God because we are claiming it is direct revelation. I personally will trust in the scriptures alone. I don't need anything more. Im not sure if you have thought about that before, but as a former pentecostal I understand the arguments. I love the passion of the Pentecostal church and its zeal for the Lord. I just think they may be ignoring something very important here.
@KevinDay
@KevinDay Год назад
@@barttyler1303 But everything you're saying is *presuming* a certain view of what prophecy *is.* Continuationists do not believe that modern-day prophecy is universally binding on all Christians like Scripture, *because we do not believe that ALL prophecy in the Old or New Testament times was either.* Only what got written down and recognized as Scripture holds that status. The fact that Scripture tells us that prophecy should be desired and never tells us that it has ceased means we need to re-evaluate our understanding of the word "prophecy" in 1 Cor. 14, rather than re-evaluating whether or not Paul actually means to say we should seek it. It's the most plain, obvious meaning of the text that we are to earnestly desire to "prophesy." So the only question is what it means to, "prophesy."
@barttyler1303
@barttyler1303 Год назад
@@KevinDay first of all there is no doubt that we are both brothers in Christ and I respect where you are coming from. The only way to define prophecy in my view is to look at what the scriptures say about it. It is a direct revelation from God to both foretell future events and forth tell the desires of the Lord for the human race. I don't see any difference in the role of the prophet from the old or new testaments. the measure of the prophet is that they get it right 100 percent of the time all the time, and for those who don't, they have spoken presumptuously and really blaspheme the name of God. Prophecy can only mean one thing when you read it from the scripture. It came directly from God whether it was written down or not. It still held the same authority as scripture. God only decided to include certain books in scripture. After all, I believe Luke wrote that all the books could not contain all that Jesus did. Those things too would be on the level of scripture. That is why I think it is wise to take heed to scripture only and not trust what is most likely just coming from the thoughts of men today. blessings to you my friend.

If anything, its not an indication of strength of faith, because it always comes out when I'm so weak I don't know how to pray, but when I am in the word, consistent, it doesn't happen much. I joined a church where it is stressed that to get to heaven you have to speak in tongue and if you don't have this ability it's because you haven't been truthful in your repentance. If you repent and are baptized this is a special gift God gives you. Well i repented over and over, I'm 59 and I wrote everything down so I wouldn't forget, that a lot of repenting and I was baptized in Jesus' name but still I could not speak it. I kept thinking I must be unforgivable or bad to the core or going to hell for the last 2 years. I want to say thank you for doing this lesson! I just found you yesterday and subscribed! I was shocked of what i have just read about your comment that you are forced to take this gift? That is wrong. 🥺 It is to be given By God Himself. In order for you to have this gift, you firstly have to surrender yourself yes your whole self before God and that is when you are empty, God will fill you in of what your heart really desires. ☺️🙏🕊🔥 Never rush. Trust in His Timing. Maybe God is wanting you more to surrender more of all your life aspects to Him. When you are ready enough to take this gift, He will give that to you In His Perfect Timing. A pastor actually looked at you and told you that?? That is sad. If you believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and you know in your heart that you trust Him, then you have the Holy Spirit and are saved. How do I know this? Because without the Holy Spirit, you wouldn’t even believe. It takes the Holy Spirit in you to bring your carnal flesh mind to any sense of faith in the first place. Some may argue and say “Oh but the devil also believes in Jesus.” However, the devil does not believe Jesus is Lord Almighty because if he did then he would submit himself to the Lord. Instead, he chose to rebel and go against the will and plan of God.

WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT!!!!! Gifts are not a litmus for being accepted. Gift exist to Glorify God and the edification of the Church, not for our own agenda. It is obvious that you lack an understanding of what was promised to those whom God has called, it is the Spirit of promise given by Jesus Christ. This is what you seek, this is what is promised, but ask in faith, nothing doubting. When I received the Spirit, I had stammering lips, which is not a language at all Isaiah 28:11. Those with a shallow knowledge of these things do the church a disservice, they think they have received the Spirit, but it is painfully obvious that they have not. Shut out all the voices and seek God, it is between you and him. Heed my exhortation, I'm not telling you what I think, but what I know and have experienced from the day I was saved. I had the blessing of receiving the Spirit before denominational, and seminary teaching had the chance to mislead me. When the Spirit falls upon you, you will feel that your belly is about to burst unless you give vent to it by speaking. Jesus said, Out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water, and this he spoke concerning the Spirit, which had not yet been given John 7:39. Be blessed.

I did not start speaking in tongues immediately upon getting saved. But since I’ve let go by myself and uttered in sounds (language) beyond our understanding, beyond our decision of words or words to say to him in prayer. It’s a passionate prayer to God that’s beyond language. This is how I feel tongues is. I don’t think I’m less saved than people who immediately spoke in tongues when they were saved. The Bible says for us to trust beyond what we feel or think. So that’s what I do. Although I have doubted my salvation in the past because I was attending a church sometimes that taught that evidence for salvation was tongues. And everyone else spoke in tongues. At that time I did as Sid Roth says to do… just open your mouth and meditate on God and utter your sounds out to him in trust of him and whatever he knows is needed will be prayed for even more powerfully because of your child-like trust in him. For me, this is what tongues is- trust in him.

One of the things about tongues that is very important is that you cannot force it because it comes from the Spirit inside of you and requires a complete yielding of self in those moments in order to operate in it. I am a very intellectual person and always want to try to understand something before trying it 😂😅. Finally I got to the end of myself and just said “Lord you know I want this but it’s going to happen in your timing not mine. Show me how to yield my body and mind so that I can speak to you from my spirit. One night after I had spent the day out in nature talking to Him and marveling Him, I looked up at the full moon and I was overcome with gratitude and awe and just like that it just started to flow naturally out of me. It is no longer any effort to do so, no matter where I am. So if you truly desire the gift at least for prayer languages (and there are different aspects of that gift), then just keep asking Him and He will be faithful to give it to you. If you don’t have any desire to have it, that’s perfectly fine too. As Paul said, prophesy is much better. Sadly, I think much of what people think as prophesy is just their own opinion instead of communicating the Father’s heart. O that we would know Him and long for Him like Moses and David, Joshua, and so many others. His presence changes everything and when we know He lives in us we are given the opportunity to co-labor with Him in introducing who Jesus is to those who don’t know Him. Christ in me the hope of glory. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Whom the Son sets free, he is free indeed! He must increase and I must decrease

EVERYTHING that was said today down to the the fact that they were speaking actual languages is what the Lord showed me. It is so sad to see ministers/teachers of the word making real believers feel as though they aren't filled with the Holy Spirit because they don't speak in tongues when it is a GIFT. One of the things the Lord said to me was this (a paraphrase because it was a while ago): My Holy Spirit gives you everything that you need. I have given you certain gifts for your purpose in My kingdom. Just like the members of the body of Christ all have different roles, so are the gifts that are given. Brother Alan you are so right speaking in tongues is not of the past it is of the present as well. I never wanted to speak In tongues because I never liked hearing it. In my life growing up in the faith, when I began spending more time with the Lord in fasting and in prayer I experienced something different in my life. I went on a three days of fasting and praying I spoke to the Lord, saying if speaking in tongues is of him please fill me with the Holy Spirit and the evidence of speaking in tongues. My church had prayer meeting on the Friday night. When I began to pray the Holy Spirit came upon me, that was so powerful. And ever since I started hearing the Holy Spirit speak to me, and the first time I heard the Holy Spirit said my word is an ingredient to you. Prayer is power, it elevates your relationship with the Lord. When I saw how God used me to pray for a lady that was in a coma and have never responded. When I prayed for her and then ministered to her she accepted to Lord. The nurse was very amazed said the lady was there for a year and this is the first time she ever seen anything like this. And this is not all, I have many more testimonies to share. I pray that this is an encouragement to someone who is in question. God is amazing.

Other times when I have ask my Lord what was I saying I find myself worshiping Him. I have done this openly only a few times in over 50 years and only after having a heart heavy to do so. Many times when someone desires to stop a thought in it’s tracks by saying I am not going to think that way, that is the very thing my mind wants to think about. Having this secret help in taking every thought captive keeps me from having that negative reaction in attempting to stop thinking in a particular way.

Excellent. I do that (have to do that) every day in some way. I grab hold of the thought and bind it so to speak, which is taking it captive to Christ who is in me. Another effective strategy is to praise and worship when deceptive or difficult thoughts seek to come in as darkness cannot co-exist with or stand being in the presence of God and of course He inhabits our praises. Praise and worship are actually spiritual warfare 101.

Speaking in tongues for the first time is a sign that you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, and then you continue afterwards in your walk with Jesus speaking in tongues to edify yourself in prayer, whether that be in church or your home. If at church, you do it silently, unless there is an interpretation! Paul says I pray with my mind, and I pray with the Spirit... the Word of God is very clear on this! THANK YOU!!!!! I had an experience where I was speaking to the Bishop of Augsburg in Germany. I speak fluent German. However, while I was speaking, suddenly I started quoting Bible Verses (actually 1 Corinthians) in fluent German. I've never read the Bible in German before. I'm horrible with verse memorization. That is how I knew the Holy Spirit was speaking through me. THAT is speaking in tongues. I feel humbled that God used me in that way and I've tried to tell this story to many so they understand what tongues is about.
