My Problem With IL MAKIAGE | IL MAKIAGE foundation has me angry

I've done a diploma in animation and game design, and there's actually a lot of time dedicated to special effects in live action and photo editing. The best advice I can give is to look at the lights and shadows. Mascara packaging is an easy one, because they usually give you a superzoom of the eye. Look where the highlights are, look where the shadows are, have the shadows cast by the eyelashes changed, is she looking much further up in the second picture. I'm so often seeing 3 pictures of lips given a recolour to show 18 shades of lipstick these days because they don't bother swatching. For foundation, here's my advice - look at the hairline, look around the corners of eyes and lips, look at the wing of the nose. Are the edges of a shadow cast by the nose blurry, indistinct, or lighter than the midpoint of the shadow? These companies are not paying enough to their editors or giving them enough time to get a perfect fake. Watch for these areas of high contrast and high texture.

The amount of blurring is reminiscent of the soap operas The Young and the Restless, and The Bold & The Beautiful. Thank you for bringing this up. I actually have the foundation, concealer and primer on trial right now. They definitely don’t give me 1990’s Hunter Tylo skin. I agree with you - they’re good products, not miracle products. Tomorrow will be the third day of my trial period but I’m leaning towards returning the foundation and primer.

I bought this foundation years ago when it was marketed heavily on RU-vid and Instagram. Now I see a huge marketing push again. It's nothing special AT ALL.

Hey Robert! I'm in software, so I do have a guess as to why they ask all those questions in the quiz. I'm guessing they save your responses somewhere and reference them for marketing/demographic purposes, or maybe even for product development. Consumer data is gold to brands. If we'll sit and give it to them for free, they'll take it :P Obv doesn't address the rest of the video (which I totally agree with), but I thought I'd share my thoughts on that part since I didn't see anyone else bring it up :)

I agree 100%. Makeup isn't magic and brands need to stop pretending it is. Using filters or whatever on ads leads to unrealistic expectations of what makeup can actually do, and then people feel bad because their makeup doesn't look like online.

I think a lot of these ads are geared towards folks who aren't very technologically literate. My mom was *amazed* by the results. She wanted to try this immediately after seeing these blurry ads. She genuinely didn't realize that the footage was blurred beyond all recognition.

Years ago, maybe 25 or so, Il Makiage had a gorgeous, high-end store in Manhattan not far from Central Park. They sold a full range of cosmetics and the store was frequented by the women who lived in the area which is the most expensive, exclusive area of Manhattan. I thought they were long out of business and was surprised when these ads started to show up on my feed. I agree with your assessment of these ads.

Studies have shown, that the more you involve yourself in the purchase, the more you think you are PERSONALIZING that purchase... the more you are apt to buy. The more things that they make you do, that are easy, (Making someone jump through hoops does not work for this) Then when it is all said and done buyers are more apt to think that if they DON'T buy they wasted not just THEIR time but the time of the business. Look at the different aspects of each ad. You will only be pretty if you get this foundation (Ego and desperation), You get to PERSONALIZE your foundation (Ego again), If it was not as GOOD as it is, you could buy it at Wally World (Scarcity). I promise that MOST people did not even NOTICE that the image was blurred.

I tried the Makiage foundation, and it blurred my fine lines so much that it even blurred the regular lines. I can't open my mouth as much, one of my eyelids disappeared, and my nostrils have even shrunk. I don't know what to do. My eye is burning, and I'm having trouble breathing. Their support just said that I can return it for a full refund, but nothing about all the details on my face blurring. Did this happen for anyone else, and is their a fix? I look like a melted candle on a camcorder from 1993, and my wedding is in 3 days.

Yeah umm anyone else take the quiz and they have you a shade so much darker than you, you'd have the mask off the century? Even if you tried to bring it down onto your neck, pale as hell everywhere else, orangey tan face? Nuh uh. I'll pass. And keep the $45 brush. I'll keep my Morphe brush I spent like I don't know...$5, 6. I was so excited for this. What a letdown.

Robert, in the U.S., Il Makiage sells two foundations: "Woke Up Like This" (the one featured in the clips in your video), and "After Party" which they describe as 'next gen full coverage'. For concealers, they also have two options: "F*ck I'm Flawless," which is the standard liquid concealer; the second is "Mystique Concealer Palette" which is a compact with six shades of color correcting cream concealer. They also have some limited skincare options (a redness "defense" product, a wrinkle "filler"/blur product, and a "power pumping" primer, which comes in a little pot -- it's not their regular primer. I think that *could* be why the color match quiz has so many questions. They're likely collecting all our data now, so as they expand their offerings, they know which products to target to whom.

100% agree i hate their ads, putting filters on ads should be illegal or regulating. I do use their foundation most days and it is good coverage and doesn't make my skin breakout. i also think its not drying which I have had happen withsome full coverage foundations.

I tried this foundation in two shades and both gave Oompa Loompa. With the primer, the overall effect was that of a mask. It was very thick, never dried down, and felt literally uncomfortable. It lasted about two hours before I sweated it off. It didn’t even cover my dark spots. I tried some of their concealer over the spots, and they were still visible. I have dry skin and am fair-light with a neutral undertone. This brand was definitely not for me. Their marketing is misleading and omnipresent, and they make it almost impossible to make it through checkout without buying a bunch of their other products and sister brand products. Very pushy about subscribing too. I’m sorry, but I don’t buy any foundation twice in a row unless it’s a bad color match and I need another shade to mix with the first. I get bored easily, especially of low quality stuff like il makiage.

I want to believe that the part of the questionnaire that asks about skin type/concerns is for the purposes of data collecting, like a survey. It's possible that they're using it for advertising or to scope out the market for product development. If it's for product development, they should ask the color matching questions first and then a prompt should ask if they wish to fill out a survey. That way the quiz doesn't give the false impression of getting an ultra custom formula. If it's not for anything like that, what's the point lol?

The problem i have with this foundation aside from the horrible ads is how much it oxodized on me. I got it years ago, took the shade match quiz, even uploaded a picture, but the shade was already a little off, but once it dried down it was 2-3 shades darker and ORANGE. Horrible, and definitely stuck to my dry patches and ENHANCED my pores!

Fuck this brand. Ugh. I've had beef with them for years. A friend convinced me to get a free makeover at Il Makiage. I was excited and went. I had planned on buying something. The lady starts out by pretty much poo-pooing the foundation I use (mind you, I went foundationless today *because* I knew I was getting my makeup done). The lady tries to tell me how high quality their stuff is and blahblahblah. I genuinely did like one eyeshadow and the bronzer. I was going to buy those things. But the lady kept pushing me to buy the foundation and brushes, which were like 60 bucks each. No prices were listed btw. I told her I couldnt spend that much, I'm unemployed, $280 is probably more than I spend in a year. She wasnt backing down. So I panicked, blurted out "IM PREGNANT AND MY WATER JUST BROKE GOTTA GO BYE" and darted out lmaoooo

I got sucked into buying the Il Makiage foundation and it is absolutely awful in my experience. I tried every single suggested application method and used it for 7 days straight before giving up on it. Im from Canada and that purchase cost me $90 with tax and shipping. I've got a $12 Maybelline foundation that way out performs the woke up like this junk.

But I’m curious to go into their boutique to try to “colour-match”, because I would want to have an “ideal” match, but I understand, that it’s their gimmick, because there’s only so much you can do, and also for me, nobody can do better in colour and undertone matching than MAC.

This woman is an actress (played Jan on the office) so I assume this is a professional video made to look like a natural video she took on her phone. I have tried the foundation, it wasn’t a perfect match and the smell wasn’t good. ALSO they charge you immediately and then “refund” it if you return the product in time… they say it’s for free and don’t explain you’re being charged right away. It’s way too expensive as well

I tried this brand due to my own difficulty with shade matching (expected too much from the quiz - it wasn’t a good match, too dark) - but I didn’t keep it on long since foundation had a slight scent that would give me headaches so I sent it back. I wasn’t focused on blurring but wanting a decent shade match to cover redness. I’m sure I subconsciously fell for the blurring and it influenced me - was excited for it to match well and it didn’t. Thank you Robert for being honest and helping us be informed consumers

WORST foundation. I'd rather use L.A. Colors. It was so awful and the shade basically made me look like an oompa loompa.

I have recently tried this product and although the color match was good, it was drying AF on my skin. And yes, I do use proper skin care before makeup. I was extremely disappointed. It left dry flakey patches and my forehead looked like crepe paper. Awful.

I've been doing makeup for years but I've always struggled to find a shade match. When I finally got my il makiage sample, it wasn't nearly as perfect of a shade match as all the ads make it out to be. They pitch themselves as a miracle product for people who need help finding the right foundation, but four years ago when I didn't know nearly as much about undertones or complexion, I found their quiz wasn't much help for someone on the beginner level of shade matching.

I tried this product. 1) I thought it was kinda heavy. 2) it settled in my pores. 3) it didn’t “really” match my skin, it was a bit too pale. I have strawberry-blond hair and I’m pale w combination skin and I’m 58. I may look younger than my age but I felt like this foundation made me look older because it did nothing for my skin texture. I believed the ads and now I know why it didn’t do for me what I thought it would. THANK YOU!!!!!

I don't think it's poor quality, I see straight up filtering. It looks so blurred as they are applying it. That's why I've never been tempted to try it because of the obvious blurring filter.

I bought this foundation bc they advertized it would be an "exact match". Spoiler alert, it wasnt. Too pink and too dark.

Ok they’re going back and using the primer. Then doing it again. It’s a very very thick silicone primer that is a lot like a thicker smashbox original primer. Also they sell one foundation it gives you combos of if you should use primer or not and if they should add concealer. I noticed that the glowy choice didn’t suggest the primer which I wanted and went back and did the other way. I get how that would look with only wanting the foundation Ok so idk I bought it and it turned out to be the best match and one of the best foundations I’ve bought in a long time. As for the strokes if the foundation, it does meld quickly like a gel like when you pain your nails with gel and it fills out super fast and idk what that means is dif with this one necessarily but I get how Same with the primer however it is a silicone primer and does the same blur as smashbox original. I know about filters and I guess I see how others may not. I bought the products based on high pigment levels and I wanted to see the results of the website matching. My color gets messed up A LOT by a lot by the quizzes and often wrong by help at makeup stores.

As someone who is ghostly white, I was going to try this out a couple months ago due to their advertising that you could test it out for free. My mom and I took the test and then realized you have to pay for the full bottle and then if you don’t like it you can send it back. We were super disappointed Edit for clarification: I thought that it would be a free sample sort of thing like many brands do. If it worked I was fully willing to buy the full size! But I’m an 18 year old university student living in Canada so for the price of the foundation and the shipping it wasn’t doable for me to buy the full size and then try and potentially ship it back from Canada

I just bought this foundation and quickly returned it! It did everything they said it doesn’t. It settled into my fine lines and it was super heavy on my skin. Even when I used the slightest amount.

Everything you said. And also after getting pestered with their ads, i caved and just gave it a try. I ordered the foundation according to their shade matching quiz. Well, needless to say, the shade was pretty off. It was about 2 shades too dark and the undertone was way too warm. The formula itself was fine. But honestly it did nothing my Catrice HD Liquid Coverage won't do for a quarter of the price. So, yeah, I sent it back.

I have this foundation currently. I typically use Laura Mercier. I noticed even with different primers it seems to sit on the skin where the Laura Mercier formula blends into my skin better. Now it may be a combination of my skin, the primer and moisturizer I use. I have only purchased it once and do not plan to buy again.

I have their foundation. They did match me perfectly but it’s not hard to do as I take the lightest shade they have 🤷‍♀️ I think the foundation is fine. It’s not the ‘gasp! WOW!!’ reaction that their ads show. But it is a nice foundation. It definitely doesn’t blue out everything and you have to make sure to blend well and not apply too much or it will look cakey, IMO. I haven’t repurchased it as it’s expensive for what it is and there are better less expensive alternatives. I’m currently loving the new About Face foundation 😊 thank you for this deep dive (or shallow paddle) into IL Makiage. They definitely need to make some changes. Have a great rest of your week! I'm so glad you're digging into this because I've been curious yet apprehensive about this brand.

Il makiage has stores in Israel and are famous for being the absolute worst in terms of marketing and costumer service. They are extremely aggressive, will try to sell you anything and everything, and have the strangest "sales" where basically the more you buy the more the sales associate "gifts" you other products. Will never purchase anything from them even though they do have some nice products, they are overall just shady and annoying.

First of all, the woman you’re watching is an actress so I have no doubt that she was *paid* to film this scripted demo as an ad. I tried this foundation and hated it. It’s ok but it definitely does NOT cover the way they claim it does, and the concealer was useless for me; I might as well have been putting tinted water on my face. I will say the shade match was perfect for me, but the foundation does not do what they claim it does at all. It’s a scam. Edited to add: YES about the fact that they literally only have one foundation formula they offer. Such a shady company.

Their products aren’t that great. I bought the foundation and primer and did the quiz and it was way orange. Their foundation and concealer are also very drying and cakey. They have aggressive sales practices too and try to push you into a subscription which is really confusing to cancel.

In terms of buying, they are also quite deceptive. My elderly mom took the quiz and put in her email. She clicked to “try the foundation” and had no idea she was signed up for auto-pay to receive an entire bottle of foundation AND concealer every 45 days for $90! She could not navigate the website to figure out how to cancel it and finally asked me for help. She was so embarrassed and felt taken advantage of. I had to call to cancel and that worked - but no refund. Product was cakey af imo.

They actually sell two foundations now, but they still don't seem to take into consideration what kind of finish or coverage you want. When I took it, I said light-to-medium coverage and a dewy finish, but they still matched me with the new full-coverage, matte one... Plus, they gave me one with a yellow (or neutral? idr) undertone when I said I had a pink undertone... 🤨

By the way the first two people in the ads are American actors I'm not sure about the others but just letting you know obviously they aren't random people doing reviews

listen i will say, while they did not colour match me correctly (but my tone is a bit difficult tbh bc I'm pretty pale and I get flushed cheeks easily despite having a neutral/cool undertone) their customer service was wonderful tbh. i originally used their products like 5 years ago probably? idk time isn't real anymore but I was obsessed with their concealer because to this day, it's one of the only concealers I've found that is like my EXACT skintone (though now I found that actually just using a buildable foundation in the right shade works equally good) but i stopped using it because tbh it was just too expensive and the quality wasn't really worth it when i could buy smth from the drugstore for a quarter of the cost side note but if you're pale and/or have dry skin, highly recommend colourpop's pretty fresh foundation for a more affordable option, and rare beauty's liquid touch one if you're able to spend a bit more edit: just wanted to add that while i did re-purchase the concealer several times, i never bought their foundation again, because even though the colour was beautiful, the texture/finish was not great for my dry skin

It looks to me like they're using red giant cosmo plugin for skin smoothing. The way to tell is you will select the colour of pixel you want blurred, and it has the effect of blurring similar colours in areas like the hair / brows / fingers too.

The website asking for your email to send you the results of the shade match is just a ploy to get your email. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to get their hands on this bit of personal information. And they can then send you marketing material by email afterwards.

I'd love to know what you think of the Maybelline superstay face tint (?) stuff that everyone and their mother is freaking out about. I don't trust them or their mothers. But I trust your expert opinion

I didn’t like the foundation. If my drugstore Maybelline has better coverage and consistency than this; it’s not worth the high dollar price tag that they are charging 👀

So real. I tried it before and I was wanting a more matte finish but when I saw it was only one I was disappointed. It was a nice foundation but it felt like any ordinary foundation to me. Nothing truly spectacular like the market to the beauty community.
