Hey, that’s great advice! Thank you for sharing it, and thank you for getting right to the point instead of putting your super secret advice behind a paywall, a subscription signup, or even a 10 minute long video!
"The ghosts of projects never finished." These haunt us all, and will until we are one day buried with our ambitions and music still in us. Thank you for the reminder. 👍
Journaling as a tool to combat the productivity drain of social media is a brilliant approach! It's fascinating how tracking daily activities can shift our focus from passive consumption to active engagement with our time. 📘
This is a GREAT tool -- to use a google doc (or a notebook) "to keep track of what you do all day!" Thank you! I used to completely time track, as though I were tracking my billable hours, for many years - and that was a good way of keeping me accountable. That's really old history now - but a GREAT HABIT to resurrect!!! Like REALLY good!! I like the google doc method also cuz that would be electronic and easily done and found, for times I need to recall "how much time I spent on a project" ! This is great. Thank you for the nudge!! And now... I am commenting to help get this into more people's feeds -- because, that's how I got here, and I am grateful! Thank you so much!!
Great idea, and really simple interface. Thank you! I keep a bullet journal, and I do write down what I've done at the end of the day, but it never occurred to me to make it more granular. As soon as I signed up, I immediately felt the vibe shift of being observed by Future Me. 👀
this is actually helpful. a lot more helpful than writing a daunting "to do" list that just makes one anxious to check things off the list. just writing down what you actually have done is less threatening, because it is in the past.
Indeed, and the real value is in the *_self-inspection_* -- a form of *_humility._* AND *_humility is Spiritual power_* far greater than physical energy (money, volts, ergs, joules). 😎♥✝🇺🇸💯
This looks amazing. Since I started working from home 4 years ago I’ve become way too comfortable with wasting time online all day long. I’m going to start using this tool. Thank you!
The same thing works wonders when you start writing down every single penny spent. Literally, it has to be to the penny. Don’t need to do anything else. Try it :-)
you are exactly correct. We are on the same mind I've been doing this for the last two months. I'm using notes in the macOS system on three devices, it works great I love your app. This is something people need to do to take back their life. So bravo to you for putting this out propagating this idea!! The other part that's really helpful for me, is at the end of the day going back and tallying up the time I've spent with various areas of my life. It's very revealing, and enables me to make adjustments, and answers the question why I'm not getting as much done as I thought.. Cheers to you..... ps getting projects finished is what really matters
I use a cheap steno pads - 1 per month. There happen to be to enough rows that I can give each hour a row. On the left hand side I have appointments and plans on the right side I list everything I actually did. Lists and to dos get added in the back of the book. Then a sort of bullet journaling process ensues. It is working for me after about a year or two into it! Best of luck to everyone trying to make the most of this life!!
I tried this out today and it was actually really helpful in staying on task. Especially using the categories - incentivized me to see how much "on-task" color I could see at the end of the day. I love how simple and distraction free this site is, so I hesitate to suggest an upgrade - but it would be really cool to be able to see a running percentage or end-of-day percentage broken out by category. This would also serve as a measuring stick or benchmark for people who are trying to maybe increase their percentage of time in any particular category. The categories I made were 1) on-task: planned (work tasks I set out to do for the day), 2) on-task: unplanned (productive work, but stuff that wasn't planned for the day), 3) off-task: planned (breaks and rest time), and 4) off-task: unplanned (wasted or distracted time). Love the tool and thanks for sharing!
Hi, thanks so much for the comment! I'm glad to hear you're finding the site helpful. I actually do hope to add reporting features to the site that would work similarly to how you describe. It's a little ways down my to-do list!
I have started to use YT without an established account-profile; cold and unknown every time. It makes me search and view material 'on purpose' and not be spoon-fed via my algorithm bubble.
Yes doing this with time tracking when you start working or doing deep focus work is gold! It’s like clocking into a regular job but for yourself and also keeps you aware of your time.
This is interesting. I've never thought of journalling in this way before - the notion of also writing down stuff you're doing that you shouldn't - that's new to me. That could actually make a difference. Because like it's said in the video, it introduces a kind of mindfulness. When you know you're about to do something that you shouldn't (waste time), you realize that you're going to have to also write down that you wasted time today, it gives you a bit of a pause and make you think "is it really worth it?"
I try to have (somewhat in bullet journal format) : 1. 2do list 2. B-do: instead of tasks, this is elements I'm working on towards a goal 3. Did-Doos: stuff I actually get done. Trying to fill in category 3 pushes me a bit
Well, I'm happy for you. I don't want to write down every single thing I do. Like breathing, or whatever. Would much rather prefer to have a few minutes before sleep to think about what I have done today. (improves your memory also)
Me encantó! Vamos a probar a ver qué onda. Lo estuve probando un poco y va bastante bien. Me costó entender un poco como se actualiza la fecha abajo, pero ya le tengo la mano creo. Muchas gracias por compartir desinteresadamente! Abrazo.
Wow, Wow, Wow! Thanks so much for this vid and sharing the app that you created. Just signed up, and so far it looks like it'll be a great addition to my productivity stack. Thanks, again!
Thanks for your insight and time. I can REALLY see how this can help make me accountable. This, on top of journaling only at the start, and end of the day. Very easy to use my phone to do this as well. Make a recurring/daily journal entry in my phone calendar. Add to the "notes" on the daily entry as I go.
It is always a shock to study back how the time was used. Excellent ideas for productivity. The same procedure is applicable to creating a budget from 'where is my money going' tracking.
True! Years ago I developed a diet and nutrition tracking site that worked on the same principle (only with a lot more math). Funny how it took me so long to figure out it would work for productivity too!
I joyously started using your WHID and I am missing: printing function, exporting all files as a pdf or selected dates function, being able to do a word search for all dates (for example, the word "exercise", how often does it show up in May, and when, so I can track my progress). Will you be adding these?
Hi, these are great suggestions. I do plan to add search and reporting features. I hadn't considered exporting as pdf, but that shouldn't be difficult to do. I can add that to my features-to-come list. Thanks!
Love this! Can't find the website but downloading video. Will use pencil and paper. (I can connect to the website via RU-vid, but when I put it in Google it doesn't come up.)
Great idea. As a suggestion would it be possible to implement a Timezone setting so users in different parts of the world would see accurate dates for their location?
Ah, right ... I had been kind of hoping that this sort of worked already. Thanks for the confirmation that it doesn't. I'll definitely work on adding a timezone setting feature.
This is great, Michael! Thank you!! I love how clean it is too. I just signed up as I really need help to be productive and to rise above, having been laid off and feeling like I will never find good work again. I avoid it with the mindless scrolling but for me it’s all YY. Glad I came across this though. So I just signed up and how do I get rid of an entry- the whole row? And is this all private? One more thing- this is obviously taking off! Maybe you can xo to us to do videos on this tool but also how you yourself have had various wins with it or such? I really hope this helps me. Def not gonna add meals and mundane but for job search primarily or to see how much time I waste with you tube! Can one add up all the time in any given category or some feature you might add? I love that you have this online as I can’t even read my own writing! Love that his I not just a to do list- or bullet list- hate those. This takes a different angle which is brilliant! You’re the man! Thanks again!
Thanks so much! To get rid of an entry, just delete all the text. After a delay of 10 to 20 seconds, it should delete automatically. And yes, your entries are password-protected and private. I do have category reporting on my future feature list for the site. Good luck with the job search! I was underemployed for way too long and it's not fun.
@@Michael_Raythank you for that tip and yes, after replying here, I scrolled down further and saw the FAQs section, etc. I think you should charge something for it and the main thing is, figure out a way to protect other companies stealing this idea as you have it without paying you. So nice of you to do this. I wish you every success, Michael.

Thanks for this. Signed up. Doesn't seem to work with Firefox. Can't change the times for any log, just stays with the default 12AM. I've turned off ad blocker already. Any advice? No contact button on site (not complaining, given the great price :) so writing here.
Thank you, this looks like something I desperatley need. Question: If you did the website, does that mean you have access to the server and all the entries that I make? It's not that I doubt your integity, it's just that this entries could show quite a profile of the person writing them, and this info could be worth something to third party companies. How are we as users protected?
Hi, I'm so happy that people are finding this little tool I built useful, and it's getting so much more early interest than I expected! Thanks for this reminder that I need to put in place a terms of agreement and privacy policy. I'll do that very soon. But the short answer is no, I won't be accessing your entries or sharing it with any third parties.
Hi, nothing really ... I used getskeleton.com as a basic starting point for the responsive CSS and then coded around that with PHP, JQuery/Javascript, and a MySQL database.
Journaling can be whatever you want it to be. But what's worked so well for me, and the reason I built this site, is to write down what I'm doing as I'm doing it. That's what keeps me consciously aware of how I'm spending my time. If I were to rely on a single report that I wrote up at the end of the week, that wouldn't help my focus much, and I'd probably miss a lot of stuff in my report. However, a more granular journal like this might be pretty helpful at the end of the week when it comes time to write up your work report.
Very similar. Interstitial journaling: when ever you have a break between activities, write down what you did, maybe some thoughts on how it went, and then what you’re going to do next
Michael, I joined just now and it took me straight to what I believe is a journal entry page; but I don’t see a way to get to anything else. Also I’m old and not very tech savvy, how do I get into this without pulling up the video and clicking on the link?
Hi Brian, the journal is pretty simple to use without ever leaving that main page. You can click on the time to edit the time of your entry. Click where you see the "..." to type the entry itself. And to create a new entry, click the + symbol to the right of the date. Other pages you might want access to are the To Do page and the Account and Categories pages (click your username in the menu at the top of every page for these last two, although currently if you're using a mobile device this menu is not available .. a fix for that is coming soon).
Hi Mike This looks great. When I signed up, the site reflects US time zone. We being ahead of US time zone we are unable to make entries. Any way you could make this sync with local time zones. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Do I first make a list of what I want to do and assign it during the day or just see what happens and then write it down? How does WHID keep me accountable....by guilt/shaming me?
At its most basic, just use the site to note what you do with your time as you do it. You don't need to be actively working through a to-do list. It's more about remaining conscious of how you spend your time. The site doesn't make any judgements; that's all up to you.
A calendar is designed more for planning your day. The intent here is more about taking a close look at how your are spending your time - being consciously aware of what you are doing as your are doing it.
I used a legal billing program to do this a few years ago to keep track of how much time i spent on every thing i did for work. It was insightful but also encouraged me to be a little obsessive about tracking every minute of my time…
After 40 years of hard work, endless tasks, keeping a home from crumbling, taking care of loved ones and report to ungrateful bosses (not all but many) so wandering around aimlessly is what I've been waiting to do all my life, now I'm suppose to feel bad because I'm not inventing a new energy source with my free time? I don't think so.
Hey Michael, really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with Best Quality Editing in your videos better than your Editor with good pricing and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail which will help your videos to reach to a wider audience ? Pls let me know what do you think ?
01:15 Yes! I’ve been thinking about doing this for along time. Not sure why I haven’t yet… distraction, most likely. You’ve inspired me to just do it and I’m going to start today, right now. 🫡
