I held a “racist” bake sale once. It teaches a lesson about affirmative action. And free speech. -------- Don't miss a single video from Stossel TV, sign up here: johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---------
I'm of Mexican decent. American born. I would buy all those cup cakes for .50¢ and turn around and sell them for $1 capitalism baby. Long live the Republic
This is so very valid. My wife works in the university admissions department and said this type of blatant discrimination is so wrong on so many levels.
Your comment is the only recent one. Hope more people watch this soon and share it. So disappointing how everything has played out since this was originally posted.
I’m so glad the supreme court voted to end Affirmative Action. And yes, I’m Asian, I’m good at math, and now I wonder what opportunities I missed because of Affirmative Action.
I dont get what they're asking for. This "Bake Sale" happened at UT where 50% are white. Are they arguing for equality where 1/6 is from every demographic. 1/6 white, 1/6 black, 1/6 Hispanic.......
@@abrahamfelix334 They may not necessarily be arguing about the unfairness of affirmative action at *their* school, but the unfairness of affirmative action period. Or, there may be criticizing it's use within a particular (usually highly competitive) program, such as medicine or law or business. Where I work, they *just* initiated this for black applicants. I'll be curious to see the result - schools here already use a sort of affirmative action to try and attract indigenous students (there are two protected spots for indigenous applicants) - I believe most years they go unapplied for. Or when someone does apply? It's someone like Elizabeth Warren (whose DNA test revealed she had no more than, I think it was, 0.25% native ancestry). Even HAD Warren had a significant amount of "native DNA," she'd have been missing the point - these policies are meant to "level the playing field," (and many, as in this vid disagree even with that). But if you "pass" for white, it's doubtful you experienced the kind of discrimination that affirmative action is meant to adjust for. Instead, you're often a student with a lower grade and/or less-impressive application simply looking for an open window to squeeze through.
The problem with modern times is there is now racism both ways and people are too quick to both call things that aren’t racism racism and call people who have genuinely been racially attacked snowflakes. It’s a very divided time because of this
That let's you know if it's cheaper for us it may be meant to kill us. Give us a hard time at life and all of a sudden we as a whole get a sale??????? Something is wrong
True story. My daughter was getting ready to go to college. I am Asian, her mother is Latina. She applied for several scholarships and was denied. She was heartbroken. I asked her what race she put on the applications, she said Asian. I told her next semester to reapply and this time check the Hispanic block. Sure as shit she was approved for those exact same scholarships she was turned down for the first time.
@@rippedharbor320 you should be sorry. Lots of visually appealing Latinas out there. And Asian, and Black, and White, etc, etc. Whoops..... "visually appealing"...... makes me sexist, right? 🤣
@@rippedharbor320 to be fair, I can't really recall seeing that combination before. I'm sure I have (I'm almost 51 after all), just don't recall. With 7 or 8 billion people on this planet there's every combination imaginable. The combination I find most baffling is political..... a conservative and a progressive. I couldn't possibly live with someone of the opposing worldview.
I don't know why I'm being sucked into this rabbit hole but ok lol. We are both 2bd generation Americans. My father was an American soldier my mother is Vietnamese. So 1/2 Asian. My wife's family is from Costa Rica. My daughter's ended up like me, Asian shaped eyes but green.
No that doesn’t work because it goes for the buyer’s skin color. Also if the Grandpa is black and the parents aren’t black someone is obviously not blood related.
The last sentence was the most important to me: "If you limit freedom of speech and academic freedom and meaningful discussion to only what people are comfortable with, then you end up shutting any meaningful discourse up."
Fantastic ruling. So happy, and I am not even American. The fact that this suit was brought by Asians shows that AA has harmed the very minorities that proponents claimed they were helping.
People get offended when it's one random guy alone doing it, but plaster a ton of college insignia and get some smart looking people and suddenly it's not offensive.
If a white teacher said this about a black student, that teacher would be cancelled in 24 hours lol and it would be on every single woke media channel.
@@_.Leo_. I think you're forgetting some unimportant things... like gunpowder or the compass or paper. Dunno, seems like Europeans had no issues stealing those ;)
@@pacificstatesofamerica You're all kinds of stupid, don't winky face. Gunpowder was spread via the Mongols. It wasn't obtained by some 007 spy theft in China. And paper was spread via the Arabs. Again, no secret stealing of blueprints etc. Until then papyrus-methods were used from Egypt.
@@_.Leo_. So... you still haven't backed up your statement with any evidence that the Chinese don't create tech, but thanks for the middle school history lesson on the Silk Road I guess. How'd you think the Arabs and Mongols got that tech? Through Europe? Jesus, I can't believe I'm sounding like a person from the 5 Cent Army. No shit the PRC steals tech today, but to say that China as a whole only steals tech is as retarded as saying that China invented everything.
@@pacificstatesofamerica You need some vitamins to assist with your microcephaly. I was correcting your statement that Europeans 'stole' gunpowder and paper. The purpose of my statement was to explicate that "Europeans" did not steal them from "China", but that it was spread by other ancient peoples. Duh.

Imagine moving here from China, having no family nearby and struggling to communicate in English, then being turned down from jobs because you’re “privileged”
@Joseph Perez he never said that he was the one that couldn't speak English, he said imagine, implying that you should think about the people do that match his description and what they have to go through, etc.
Thank you John Stossel for putting forth some of the tough yet necessary conversations that need to occur! I have your back on your approach and applaud you for doing what most will not.
@@royisdabest no, gender doesn't matter. if you can pass the same tests, then there should be no issues. the only reason i disagree with women in the military is they have a dramatically lower bar. if they all had 1 test, it wouldn't make a difference
I applaud those students!!!! When I was in school we were taught to take up different sides of a debate and civilly talk it out and end it. Please keep up the good fight!
The tonal difference in the comments from the release of this video to today (oct2022) is startling. Most people cannot even _define_ racism correctly.
Also I just love that she generalise every Asian in the world based on her 1 student experience lol 😂 like if there comes research saying that country X are best at English grammar and I say no... Cuz I know one person from country X who is not good lol..
@@eonstar asians on average getting higher SAT scores isn't a stereotype. It's statistically factual. Either way it's irrelevant since they're actively being denied opportunities on the basis of their race and for no other reason.
This is the approach that the black community should take as well. WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG? There is so much wrong in the black community, maybe take a step back and look to see what the problem is so we can find a solution. Getting the government to steal from me and give it to them is clearly not working, things are worse than ever.
@Derek Schwartz "we"? So you don't want to live in a society where you are judged by the transgressions of other people who are the same race as you but you want black people to look at what "we" are doing wrong as in me, individual black person is responsible and it is my duty to fix what is wrong with other black people? Do you not see the hypocrisy
His name is Captain Sum Ting Wong. Apparently he became a pilot short after and did not survive that fateful plane crash. There by purging the only dumb Asian.
When I was in the US Army, I fantasized about having intellectual conversations at college. I pictured talking with a group of like-minded individuals about beat literature, physics, philosophy and other pursuits. I wanted to work at Barnes and Noble. I figured everyone there loved books and would chat about it all the time. Heck, combat arms was full of jocks and football players. I bored most of the guys in my company. I ETSed out of the Army in 2007. I enrolled at a state college and got my job as Starbucks Barnes & Noble. No one read books. No one discussed complex issues. College was a lonely, isolated place. Americans do not care about issues unless it is in front of them. It is the downside to having the security and wealth of options we ALL enjoy every day as American citizens. Earn it or you will never appreciate it.
iii I'm mostly white and my mother mixed our white neighbours came and made a cake for us I ate a piece and my mother then threw away the cake saying it's poison even tho I ate a piece.
When I first moved into my home. My neighbor came over to ask me something about a computer, I looked at him and said" what because I'm Asian you think I know computers?" Turns out I do know a lot about computers......I was joking around with him 🤣😂🤣🤣 we had a big laugh,
Now, they have covered the bases more carefully by using the term " underserved" which of course they have no basis in fact to make such a judgment..because they dont KNOW who has been "served" what. Its just how reverse discrimination and hate crimes are being "normalized". Its GAS LIGHTING and corrupt fraud and a violation of the USC.
You all obviously don't know how the history works with RU-vid and reality. This was a deal in 2011 when Obama was president and this took place in California. Do your research before speaking!
"Affirmative Action Bake Sale". Love it! Best example I've seen of how affirmative action actually works...and the ones who benefit from it are the first to get offended!? Seriously, in 1978, I applied for a very well paying job. Sort of the pinnacle of blue collar jobs in our area. The supervisor told me he would love to hire me, as I was by far the best qualified candidate he had interviewed. But he could not because the company had not yet reached its Affirmative Action quota for hiring black, Hispanic and female workers. He was forced to hire a less competent employee because I was born into the wrong race!!! I know this is old news now, but it's just a reminder that Racism Comes In All Colors!
15 + years ago My sociology prof RAVED about the gender based bake sales as a good thing. She LOVED them. It was supposed display the (debunked) wage gap. So men would pay 1.00, women pay .70. Even back then it just sounded like sexism to me, and probably illegal. The difference between hers and yours though, is you know yours is a joke, and wrong. She was making the opposite point.
Thankfully every establishment, that I know of, with a "Man Tax" has failed spectacularly. Those studies refuse to go into how many more hours those men worked, how they were their own advocates and demanded raises, actually negotiated wages and worked harder more dangerous jobs.
He would also go up to his employees and ask them to "whip it out" and if it was over 4 inches he knew he had a winner. Women ruined the workplace facts!
🤣 They don't understand the irony of what they're saying! In light of this week's SCOTUS decision I had to come back and watch this again! Need to do more stuff like this!
As a young black man who crushed my SAT, got perfect grades, ran track, and got accepted to Princeton... I DETEST affirmative action. The only purpose it serves is to lower the value of a college diploma and make white people doubt whether I earned it from merit or a quota. It is sick, a repulsive affront to justice and equality. To suggest that I "need a little help academically" just because im black? Should we get paid more because we are irresponsible with money? Or maybe black politicians should get extra votes added to boost their numbers? To politicians who support affirmative action: Start treating us as people instead of some different species that needs your graciousness to uplift us. As long as this institutional division exists, equality cannot exist.
Right on. But worse is that the university quotas misplace a lot of black students in to universities where they can't keep up with the pace of the course because they're academically mismatched so a disproportionate number of them have to dropout, and who the fuck benefits from that? All in the name of "diversity"......
Or they make people question.... Why did i get in here? Those who earned it won't be seen as though they did which can negatively affect them. Equality is the only way
Racism is propelled by always being the topic of conversation. Someone always draw a parallel to race no matter the topic. Congrats on your success! We had a small discussion panel at work and a woman (low level) asked HR what the company can do to promote gender equality in our company. Another woman (VP born in China) answered her question by informing her in China everything is based on meritocracy. She never once thought her gender inhibited her from getting into grad school or work place promotions. I work in finance and this especially holds true. Thomas Sowell will eloquently shut these people down.
The sad part is that a lot of people don't even think affirmative action is a thing. I have so many black and latino friends who go on about how hard it is for them to get into college because of "racism ", but ironically it's false (making it harder for them) and true (the racism) at the same time. I'm east asian, and I got rejected from most of my first choice schools (they weren't even that selective) even though I had a 4.4 GPA, received 8 awards, was on the e-board for 4 different clubs, and was on varsity tennis. America needs to re-learn the meaning of "equality"
Ok god cuz I feel real stupid thinking that... I thought the chocolate cupcakes where 0.50cents and the white cupcakes where 1.00 dollar. 🌚🌚🌚maybe I shouldn’t have shared that
Are the latino cupcakes marble? 😂🤔 I thought the same thing. Yellow cupcakes, chocolate, maybe marble for melato and Latino and then just white, maybe both are yellow but Asians is yellow frosting while whites are white frosting. 😂 there was less chocolate too, maybe because they're a minority in real life?
yowza Wow that's racist.... really because why are some blacks in top schools lol. Plus today society whites are mixing with blacks. It a lot higher and the average person in 2050 will be brown. Hispanic, mixed etc.
Here is a thought... How about universities base acceptance on a set of unbiased tests and let affirmative action be more of a buffer for income. Those that can "easily" afford it pay a little more so that more people who qualify in testing but are borderline on being able to afford to attend get a chance? And of course cut out all the "PC culture" B.S. Universities are supposed to be a place to share ideas, not shut them down.
It’s funny how this video comes up every few months and I’m pretty sure I liked it the last time I watched it. Well I guess I’ll just have to keep clicking the thumbs up again and again!!
