CHECK OUT CARS & BIDS carsandbids.com My Range Rover's CarMax warranty is now half over, so I'm summarizing the problems I've had over the last 33,000 miles.
After watching this video, I see that Range Rover is making big strides! After all, yours always started, there was never an electrical fire under the dash or a total transmission failure, and it actually got you everywhere you needed to go. That's what I call progress!
I spoke to an executive at a car warranty company once. He told me that one of the few cars his company would not write policies on were Range Rover's.
At least Yugos were cheaper than one tire on that Land Rover. You understood why they broke down. But I can't understand Land Rovers. They are sold for $90k and then you pay $1000 a month rent for parts.
+HightLink You guys are lucky, I brought mine for 10 dollars at Walgreens and now it won't wind up and move after I drove it 30 feets today, but at least the car can fit in the palm of my hands.
best deals auto of Fort Wayne Indiana sold me a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper on my used 2011 Jaguar xjl... it costs me 500 bucks. made that back after my first month Lol. If you see the opportunity, take it! I wouldve never bought this jag, then they waved that huge warranty in my face... i still own my jag, and no out of pocket expenses
+Marc Martin Beucause random people that watch his vids think he is a legit idiot.. when actually it's the opposite because they can't understand irony
+thecarelectronicguy anyone who can afford a range rover, it doesn't really matter much what repair costs are, as is the same with super nice cars, they're expensive to repair.
+Kenny they care that's why they all buy extended warranties, and most people with money are smart they lease high end cars get rid of them before they get up in miles.
I`m British and worked in a land rover , Range rover dealer as a mechanic for 8 years, they are by far the most unreliable cars i have ever worked on. I know of several customers that had range rovers that spend 90% of the time in the garage getting fixed and had to own another car just to be able to get about.
+Marcello Penk-Masucci Do what we do and change it in for a new one every three years, never have to worry about anything apart from a service every 10k miles.
Next time... At CarMax: Doug DeMuro? Nope, sorry, there is no warranty offered on that car sir! Nope, not on that one either. In fact, we no longer offer warranties at ALL (until you leave).
Co-worker said his dream one was a mid 90s one I said "Do they even still exist?" he said "They don't make them anymore..." I said "I know that, but are their actual mid 90s ranger rovers that are still road worthy?"
The same reason people buy old Jaguars, Mercedes or BMW's. Because stupid people are impressed that they have one. They think the person driving it has money. Value drops ridiculously on these things, but repair costs stay right up there.
Range Rover (L322) was wholly designed by BMW and commenced production whilst Land Rover was under BMW ownership. Ford later purchased Land Rover from BMW in 2000. L322 was a massive leap forward in terms of design, manufacturing and engineering capability but unfortunately the Land Rover v BMW divorce was a messy affair as when Ford took ownership L322 R&D was near production readiness and not complete. As 99% of L322 R&D was undertaken by BMW engineers in Germany when Ford took ownership of Land Rover an agreement with BMW was agreed as part of the sale for BMW engineers to work alongside Land Rover engineers during the post 12 month sale transition. Unfortunately BMW were not going to reveal their engineering blueprints to a company they had just sold as some of those blueprints were scheduled to be shared in future BMW models, and as Ford did not undertake competent due diligence during the purchase of Land Rover the end result was Ford inheriting what was on paper a world beating premium 4x4 but turned out to be an engineered lemon that was plagued from the outset with production, electrical and other quality problems, issues that were in essence due to the complex engineering of L322 to which Land Rover engineers were left to bring a car to market to which they had very little input, knowledge or understanding, especially within the complex electrical architecture.
However, Land Rover always had electrical issues. I had a Discovery HSE year 2000, and in 2007 I took my teenage daughter, a toddler and a baby for a ride in a secluded place in the mountains, to look at a vacation cabin we wanted to buy. When I arrived home, the car stopped working - it just stopped! That was the only time I had any issues with my car. I loved that car, it was strong, and could pull our trailer my husband's 4 WD truck couldn't. However as a mother, I was scared, since where I was with my children, we didn't have any phone connection, and no one lived close for 30 miles or more! My point however is, that Land Rovers always had electrical issues, and I've heard that from other owners, a long time before Ford bought the company. Hen other times I read of the Defender driving all over thre African continent, and they're doing fine. In addition ay my kids' schools I think 1/4th of parents drive a LR of some sort, and I NEVER see them in other cars, nor dealer loaners. I'm perplexed, because I'm contemplating buying a RR HSE tomorrow. Wish me luck! 😊
I can't say I know anyone who's ever "enjoyed" their Rover ownership experience. Jag was the same for a long time, leading most of us US "car guys" to start referring to British cars as junk.
Ironically American cars over here in England don't have great reputations, the Chevrolet Cruze for example is considered one of the worst cars currently on sale.
+The Real Emile I totally understand what you are saying, the US car makers have made their share of absolute junk. I think the difference is the amount you are paying for the repairs. For what his warranty has paid on the Rover you could buy a Cruze. LOL!!!! I suppose this is why so many of us end up driving Honda's and Toyota's!!!!
+giff74 Yeah true even in the UK those cars are super expensive to repair! I think that's the thing with car makers and countries if you make one mistake it can seriously affect you like with Lancia in the 80's or with French cars in the US!
+giff74 but in all honesty, I'd love a range rover. and I could buy one this year. But I used to have a land rover discovery II, and...it's just a bad, bad idea...
My neighbor's Land Rover was so dependable when he traded in for a Dodge Caravan and think the Dodge is the most reliable car in his experience. I went home close all my windows and doors and laugh until the next day.
I managed 266K trouble-free miles out of a 1998 Dodge Durango 5.9 4x4. It didnt even have the factory installed transmission issues until around 260k miles, and even then, it just didn't like to come out of first on its own. Let off the throttle and it would shift fine.
+airthrow 4runner and Land Cruiser are both awesome but I'd take the soccer-mom/businessman/expensive personal driver service styled Lexus LX over them any day lol
If i wanted all that plastic, i might as well save myself $30k and get a corolla with the same amount of plastic and the same shitty build quality. Hell Maybe ill get lucky and ill get a toyota that DOESNT have electrical problems
The cost of your repair is what i paid for my 98 dodge ram with 36k miles on it 2 years ago and the only thing its needed the past 40k I've put on it is gas and oil lol.
chip NFS That ones a 97 with an 8L V10 haha my 98 is a 5.2L V8 auto 2wd. I also have a 01 durango 5.9L V8 awd and a 1977 Dodge M880 with a shortened frame and stepside bed with a 440 big block pounding away under the hood.
Ridiculous! What was Range Rover thinking putting in such inferior parts in their automobiles? I bet BMW isn't far behind Range Rover in reliability...
+dan87951 Because until the full fat Range Rover was updated in 2013 and the Range Rover Sport in 2014, they were a mis-mash of Ford, BMW, and OG Rover parts that never really worked well together. The new ones are night and day, reliability-wise.
+Caarac Problem is I keep hearing that same line... The new ones are much more reliable. That may be true but you won't see me rushing to any dealers anytime soon until these new ones prove themselves. I have heard too many horror stories about Range Rovers from friends. ;)
+Devin Black If you had enough money you can take any car to 229,000 miles regardless of how "reliable" it is. It boils down to what you're willing to spend to keep it running. Our 2000 BMW 740IL that we bought when it was only 5 years old was absolute rubbish. By 70k miles the whole front suspension was worn, had been through 2 alternators, numerous CAM position/MAF sensors, 3 radiators, 2 coolant over flow tanks and the list goes on and on. Friends of mine have had similar problems with their 3 and 5 series. The local dealer flat beds my neighbors 5 series at least once a month for repairs. You may have had a better experience but I will never touch another BMW because of what we experienced!
We have an 06 just like this, the only problem we've had with it was the cylanoids going bad on the suspension and not letting the compressor vent properly. Easy $120 fix from our local European specialist mechanic.
I bought a S1 XJ12 Jag that had a SBC engine swap. It broke down the first day I owned it. And the second. And the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and every day for a good 4 weeks until I replaced the ignition switch, column, starter, relay, wiring, battery, alternator, and half the dash wiring, then I gave up and stopped driving it.
I bought a VW Jetta -91 1.8L with 140k miles on it for €500 three years ago and I had to pay €1k in repair/maintenance costs over those three years... I can't believe a newer "high-quality" vehicle like a Range Rover can be so unrealiable!
Biggest fix on my dads 2011 sport has been the right hand mirror, exploded when he hit a bird at highway speed. Has 100k miles so far with absolutly no issues. Pretty good for a 505hp suv. Pales in comparison to my 2008 Jeep Wk HEMI, 240k and still going strong.
thats y you lease a range rover. i leased one in 2005 then replaced it in 07 and again 2011 and now again in 2014, you always drive a new car and you spend wayyyyyy less money than you would had you bought one and sold it and again you always drive a brand new car. the only time you should buy a car is if its appreciating in price such as gt3 rs or any air cooled porsche, late 80s m3 etc.
I have a 2005 Range Rover, never had 1 problem with it, in the 10k miles, I bought it with 110k miles, but I have replaced the things that could go wrong befor they break, front air struts, OEM $850, timing chain guides and water pump and complete cooling system, every single hose all OEM, $950, transmission flush, $250, that's me doing all the work, there not expensive if you're willing to get your hands dirty.
still doesn't deny experience of other people having reliability issues with range rover, yours might be lucky but others are not, european cars, especially older ones are known to be unreliable
Months later he made a video because of angry butthurt brits, where he shows even more things went wrong on the car. A few days ago he made an other one where even more stuff broke. Do they do shitty cars deliberately?
Explain. Why blame Carmax? Range Rover are known to completely break down. One only has to look at complaints from Auto Trader or consumer reports for histories of issues. Let's educate ourselves before we say baseless comments.
I know Range Rovers are known to break down. I also know that Carmax has employees that know nothing about car mechanics. So, it's a lose lose situation to buy a high end British make from idiots. This guy should be glad he has or had a warranty.
+Paul Schab how do you know where he even taken the car? Maxcare are not only accepted at CarMax but any dealership mechanic or certified mechanic. so again, you're making assumptions.
Your lack of manly know-how is frustrating. Some of these problems could've been fixed with a fuse replacement likely, let alone replacing everything. DEALERS ARE SCAMMERS.
Cory Curtis It's like the phrase "preventative maintenance" are foreign to him. A truck like this doesn't just run and run like an economy car. Change all your fluids/filters. If your shocks/struts are blowing, find out why. Check your filter/air lines/compressor and make sure everything is flowing properly. Put a new battery, then see if the electronics act up. These kind of cars, like all modern vehicles are heavily computer-laden and very sensitive to a low/weak battery. Another thing is, things do break. Factor that into the budget when buying one. He should understand that and stop bitching about the small things.
Yet most insurances will not accept you go to anything but a dealership mechanic, despite, its not like he's paying for the repairs, might as well get everything replace lol.
I think they have improved a lot since Ford bought them. I've got a Discovery 3 with 200,000k's on it. I bought it because it got great fuel consumption but when I factor in repairing it my Nissan Patrol GU TD42 is actually cheaper to run. Having said that the Disco is way faster, handles better and is safer for my family. Would I take it 4x4ing? Hell no! It'd end up costing me more money. Would I buy a Range Rover? Not unless you can afford a new one which has a warranty. Then sell it after the warranty runs out. So no I wouldn't. To be honest though a lot of new Toyota's and Nissan's are having troubles over here. I tend to think if you want reliability you need to go old school sometimes. Nobody make's them like they used to.
Ford never purchased them their reliability is compared to a ford check wiki chevy will always last the longest my moms 2001 gmc Yukon with a 4.8 liter v8 it has 450000 miles on it
If this isn't an ad for CarMax, Good onyas CM. 👍 It causes me to re-think add on warranties. Does the "Prince of Darkness" still do the electrics in Rovers?
I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and is 2020 and I have never done anything to this truck except for engine and transmission oil change , tune up and brakes . other than that nothing .
While I absolutely agree and own a Cruiser myself, I think Doug buys these vehicles (Rover, Hummer, Ferrari) just so he can have entertaining experiences and stories to write about.
+dickcheese663 Yeah, i heard the transmission on those give out though. Still won't stop me from getting one. My mother had a late 90's 4Runner when i was a kid, transmission gave out. Just like the Land Cruiser would i assume. I love Japanese off-roaders though.
1. This is an off road machine you NEVER take off roading! Can you imagine what will happen when you raise the suspension 12 inches to clear big rocks going in, and the air suspension fails dropping the vehicle to 8 inches when you are trying to get out? And the tires are street rubber with thin sidewalls that will cut on any rock, and the super soft alloy wheels will get ruined when contacting anything. BUY A LEXUS!!!!
This gen of LR is shit, no one in their right mind would buy a used pre2014 Range Rover. They are SHIT and so unreliable, and that is Fords fault..this car was on their watch!
In general dont get used range rovers, most of them are beat to shit and have many underlying problems you wont notice until later on. Only exception to this is buying one used from Land Rover themselves, although at that point you are paying such a premium you might as well save for a new one.
the standard configuration of a Range Rover is pulled over at the side of the road with the hood open and the owner peering into the engine bay while scratching their head.
Atleast you kept your rover, my 1998 Civic LX was a manual shift and it got hit in a car accident in the back. The engine was fine, it was just that I didn't look good enough for any repair stores. After a few weeks, the engine stalled now, I guess it was time to give it up. I made sure to remove all the customizations i've added to it. My insurance company towed it away and gave me 2,000 in return. I now have a 2009 Civic LX but it's not manual anymore..
As experienced driver I can only make one comment after watching this video which makes Range Rover a useless car. how come used car with 59k miles get all those problem before even get 100k miles this mean either that car is bad or the Milage was not genuine. The actual mileage was over 100k when you bought the car it's impossible such luxury car get so many problem under 100k. I have bought my car with 45k miles 2 years ago now around 90k only general service
Range Rovers are awesome. Very reliable with that kick butt warranty. Gives an opportunity to have her rebuilt from the ground up. Basically like getting a new car, a new Range Rover for cheap!!!!!! LOL...
