This is my ranking of the movies and everyone may not agree. That’s fine. The Final Destination movies have two major hallmarks. Promotion disasters and gory gruesome kills. Most of all the kills are memorable, blood soaked, and unpleasant. The Final Destination movies released in the 2000s. (2000-2011). The Final Destination movies follow characters who survive a promotion disaster and get picked off one by one by Death. The characters are 2000s stereotypes. Characters are not Final Destination's strong aspect. Final Destination started off with practical effects, but with each later sequels, they leaned more into 2000s CGI. Good but not great. Final Destination does have some issues but the hallmark kills always keep me coming back.
First with the worst…
5. The Final Destination (2009) - TFD follows Nick and Lori and their friends survive a racetrack disaster. My least favorite out of all the disasters. Awful CGI. Worst characters in the whole series. Lori escalator kill is gnarly. The runaway semi kills a nice nod to Mortal Kombat X-Rays. Bone shattering. X-Rays filled credits sequence, another nod to MK.
4. Final Destination 2 (2003) - FD2 follows Kimberly who has a promotion about a highway accident. Explosion packed disaster. Log flying and crashing into a police car. (Iconic). Flipping cars. Explosions. All practical effects. Garbage truck, semis, Evan burning alive in a firebird. Explosions and a bunch of chaos. Good disaster. I do really like the practical effects, but I did not care for these kills. Rory's fence kill was disgusting body dismemberment and I loved that.
3. Final Destination (2000) - FD follows Alex and his classmates on a trip to Paris. Flight 180 is always referenced in later sequels. The disaster that started it all. The plane disaster is small in scale compared to other sequels, but definitely packs a punch. Alex's face melts during the plane disaster. Toasty. Terry iconic bus kill. Smoked by The Bus. Billy was decapitated with a metal shrapnel. Headless.
2. Final Destination 5 - FD5 follows Sam and his co-workers on a corporate retreat. The bridge disaster has a sense of danger and the CGI they used looks good for the time. Dennis hot tar tanker. Swinging bridge wire. Best looking of the CGI disasters. Just not my favorite. Olivia's eye surgery kill. LASER!!! Candice’s gymnastics mishap.
1. Final Destination 3 - FD3 follows Wendy and some of her classmates, who want to ride the new scary roller coaster. Devil's Flight. The roller coaster disaster is my favorite out of the series, even if it’s not big in scale and the CGI is okay. I have a fear of roller coasters and heights and this disaster captures it perfectly. 200 foot roller coaster, leaking fluids, creaking all the time. Used a bunch a ton before the accident. Devil is voiced by Tony Todd. Entertaining disaster. Falls from high heights. Carts snapped off. Lewis back smashed into a support beam. Kevin sliced in half. Roller coaster derailment is fun and quick. I wish they would have spent a little bit more on the CGI and made the disaster longer. The roller coaster disaster is a fan favorite and I don’t disagree with that. Even without the roller coaster, this movie has my two favorite kills in the whole series. Ashley and Ashlynn cooking tan beds kills. Burned alive. Erin nail gun kill. Nails through her face and hand. Gruesome. Brutal. Final Destination 3 was peak Final and you can’t change my mind.
