Making pottery will teach you that one thing is completely certain about the process: it never goes as planned. In this video you will join me as we make a pottery vase on the pottery wheel, and I will share with you my (sometimes chaotic) process, from throwing on the pottery wheel, to carving and glazing my piece (and a reveal of the finished result!). Laugh and cry with me through the ups and downs that come with creating! :)
List of what each roll means on the dice:
- first roll (throwing):
- 1: mug
- 2: vase
- 3: bowl
- 4: plate
- 5: balloon pottery
- 6: whatever I want
After done throwing, roll the dice, and if it lands on 5, it must be destroyed
- third roll (glazing):
- 1: red
- 2: orange
- 3: yellow
- 4: green
- 5: blue
- 6: purple

Tips from a pottery teacher: Wedge clay Shape in cylinder or cone Throw down or put it in center by eye than hit it down hard Merge clay onto wheelhead or bat by holding wet finger along edge, do this until you see no air gaps and the clay is in a volcano shape Then you can spend time coning up and down and centering A piece will fly off when it not merged onto the wheel/bat well enough, and same goes for adding more clay ontop to center a heavier piece, an air pocket will form if two pieces are not properly merged and coned up and down enough times Keep trying, and having fun folks! 👍🏽

I love your positive attitude though out the whole process!! I am also learning at a local pottery studio as an apprentice. I find these tips to be helpful. Tip one is to wedge the clay in order to get all the air bubbles out. Tip two was also stated in a previous comment and that is to pre cone the clay or shape it prior to smacking it down. I let gravity help just try and aim for the center. It also helps to place clay on a bat. Also using a wet finger seems to seal the edges really well to ensure a good seal. Sorry about the punctuation this phone keeps scrolling up and down…

Thanks so much! I think one of my problems with this one was that I took more clay than usual and didn’t wedge it well enough (and my arms were tired! Lol). It’s sweet of you and of everyone else to take the time to comment helpful tips. :)

It might help to make the wheel go at half that speed.

This was so cool to see the whole process of how you make your pottery pieces! The amount of times you almost lost it was crazy 😂
