The 'All for the Game Series' is a great contender for the lonely character struggling to accept friendships category. It also falls into the found family trope. Actually, in hindsight, this fits most aspects that were mentioned in this video. The story does have a romance, but it develops really slowly and really only becomes a 'romantic' relationship much later. And the characters aren't the creativ-artsy type, anything but actually. And it's just overall a great story.
@Kami-my1kp
@Kami-my1kp 3 года назад
A love triangle is only truly bad when one character is a better person than the other and you know who the main character is going to end up with. For example, in the Hunger Games, Gale had no chance because he was more angry than Peeta and wasn't as kind. However, Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel series had an amazing love triangle because both men were amazing people... (not saying names because spoilers, figure everyone knows everything about Hunger Games by now)

Shy and fearful, Addie is content to stay within the castle walls. The one thing the sisters share is their unwavering love for each other. The tables are turned, however, when plague strikes Bamarre and the Gray Death leaves Meryl fatally ill. To save her sister, Addie must set out on a dangerous quest filled with dragons, unknown magic, and death itself. The sisters' lives - and the future of the kingdom itself - hang in the balance. Jesse! About the “why is there always a war brewing in fantasy?” I agree, I recommend looking into the “fellowship” stories, since they’re about a group of people traveling together. Like The Hobbit or Kings of the Wyld. I would say Lord of the Rings but there is a war in that series (though the focus is on traveling and the relationship of the fellowship, especially in the first book). I know you’re not a LOTR person though, but there’s a whole sub-genre of fellowship-type books which are just adventures in a fantasy world.

@@jessethereader Erebos is a good book, it is about a boy around 16 years, but he does live with his parents and goes into his lonely phase

Where the crawdads sing! Follows Kya from 6-20something. She IS at home, but it’s also such a love letter to nature that it makes me want to go outside haha

You should check out Burn by Patrick Ness. It's the United States in the 1950s but with dragons, a few of which are primary characters in the book!

When you said weak characters i automatically thought of magnus chase! And i ADORE him specifically for that reason bc he is frequently described as shrieking and decidedly behaving NOT like the typical "strong lead" 😅 hea so hilarious and decidedly human i connect so much more w him!

Your take on wanting characters describes as weak is really interesting! I'd love to see a fantasy without a total badass lead, just someone who's scared but has to pull it together to save the day!

I agree it’s the way a trope is written and not the trope itself. I absolutely love love triangles when they’re done well but majority of them are just super obvious who is end game.

Omg characters being alone is SO true. I'm 19 and dont have any friends, my one friend is busy all the time so we cant lean on each other right now. It's harder when you know people my age have lots of friends, in all the shows and books etc they have lots of friends OR they have a partner next door lmao

I do prefer fast-paced books, but I also enjoy slow-paced books more than others do. I completely agree that slow books aren’t necessarily boring books because I have read slow books that I’ve loved in the past. But like you said, fantasy can’t really be slow, however a slow contemporary can be good. Keep up the great content, Jesse!

Totally agree with all of your points. This year I tried getting into YA books more, but I was getting frustrated seeing some of the things you mentioned. I hate the overuse of characters being into the arts and always having their "nose in a book". I understand that authors want to write an experience that may be similar to theirs, but I would love to see a character with different interests. A person can be just as deep and be into the math or science. I think its a missed opportunity to look over those different experiences.

I think when I first got into YA I loved seeing the book lover character type, but I can definitely see now that it's a bit overused. I still love it sometimes, but it just depends on how "in your face" it is about it.

@@jessethereader Exactly! I love those characters too (because of course I relate), but sometimes it does feel more "in your face" like you put it :)

I so agree with the Romance doesn’t need to be the main thing. That’s why enemies to lovers it usually has a lot more about there situations

I think I’ve been pretty lucky with the books I’ve picked when it comes to romance though. I’ve managed to pick some that don’t drown me in romance. There’s this series called Pivot Point by Kasie West, it has romance, but focuses more on the problem. It’s amazing. Me being a hopeless romantic who doesn’t want a relationship is what makes me read the romance books rather than adventure ones.

A lot of the things you mentioned is why I have come to re-appreciate classic and older novels in general, they are slow paced but well executed, well thought through with great values and you end them feeling...more satisfied? Villette, Lord of the Rings, anything by L.M.Montgomery,...etc.

You should read chaos walking. It is such a good sci fi trilogy and it is so good! There is a romance but it is done in a way that you know that the characters care about each other but it isn't important and something will happen after all of the plot is resolved. It is done so well. I am obsessed with it!

I actually agree with most of these! Some I don’t mind but I can see where you’re coming from. In some ways I think tropes and genres can be viewed the same for me, I have my favorite genres and tropes but if they’re done in a unique way I will like them no matter what and try ones that maybe I wouldn’t consider as much. I’d love a part 2! Also you’re writing a book?! I’d preorder it!!

i’m so glad you mentioned that comparisons hot take. when the gilded wolves came out everyone was comparing it to soc and i saw so many negative reviews saying how disappointed people were that they werent the exact same and it put me off reading it. well i read it this year, its one of my new favorite books, and while there are similarities to soc, that comparison really hurt the book i feel like
