This is most definitely a fuel starvation issue. Once you start the mower, put it at full throttle and take some ether or brake clean and spray it into the carburetor and if it revs up and runs like it should, that 100% tells you its a fuel issue.

You ran that new carb connected to the crappy fuel tank. Take the carb apart and clean the emulsion tube and pilot jet (idle). Also, there may be a screen in the fuel inlet that could be plugged up with the crap from the fuel tank. Remove the bowl and see how fast fuel is coming from the tank. In any event I would remove the fuel tank and clean it out and replace all fuel lines from the tank to the carb.. Also, make sure the fuel tanks are venting.

I also agree, id start with that and a coil. If that doesn't work I'd check the valves/head gasket.

@@mrk9295loading the parts cannon and firing a coil at it instead of just diagnosing the actual problem is bad practice because it can potentially add another issue/variable especially with the poor quality parts these days.

Henry, it sounds to me like fueling. You can start it, and when it starts to fail, shoot carb cleaner into the intake and see if it revs up. One other thing, if the lifters are hydraulic, I wonder if one (or both) of them may be collapsing, or there is not enough oil pressure to keep them pressurized. I'd remove the valve cover and see if one or both valves stop opening and closing. You'll get it!

Great video, no repair suggestions. Just FYI I was browsing Craigslist. I saw a replacement 19 HP Briggs & Stratton engine listed for $749. You have a long way to go before you hit the “cheaper to buy a new one” thresh hold.

After all the junk from the gas tank the carb could be plugged. Also check to see if the key in the flywheel sheared. Valves might be leaking causing low compression. To me it sounded like the compression was low.

Could be a coil overheating issue I ran into that one time on the very same engine and I replaced the coil with another used one and no more sputtering and dying out under load. Good luck on your adventures

I'm thinking there was either crud in the tank or bits of old fuel line that got past the fuel filter and sucked into the carburetor.

Man, I see this once a week. Fuel lines DEGRADE. They break down and dump fragments into your fuel system. Just replace them dude.

Excellent observation, I also thought it was a possibility of the cause, however as in previous episodes the ring wear pattern on the bore showed that the rings were at least 2” from the area of damage. The rings never come close to the damaged area. And being that the video was uploaded about a month ago, I can tell you that it’s not the compression.

I agree that it’s a fuel/carb issue. I had to replace my fuel line all the way to tank and it helped so much. Different engine etc than yours but I suspect that fuel line was a contributor and now you likely have junk in the carb from the dirty fuel line / tank that were on machine.

I'm interested in finding out what it was! As it was running good and then it wasn't and the sediment in the bowl, I'm wondering if junk got caught between the carb inlet and the needle and seat not causing the gas to flow into the bowl fast enough. The longer it sits, the longer it runs.

Maybe the jets are clogged in the carburetor. There was debrisss in the bowl. Try cleaning the whole carburetor.?? Im also thinking look.up the part numbers for the cams for each machine and see if they match. Lifters/valves might use different cams. Too late(for me- not for you) to count the teeth on the cams and measure them up, but it did originally run and drive for you, so doubting that. You will figure it out dude. Enjoy your channel.

Gravity tank isn’t enough fuel, hook your tank to pump. I believe you need new fuel lines and tank cleaned out

As long as the fuel bowl is full, it’ll run until it’s depleted. There’s more than enough fuel.

As long as the filter isn’t too restrictive gravity is more than adequate for fuel delivery. Fuel pumps are only necessary on machines where the bottom of the tank is lower than the carburetor.

I know you said not to mention something you already did....but just because that carb is new, doesn't mean it is good....I went through 3 new carbs before I got a good one when I restored an old trac drive snow blower a couple years ago....or maybe the decompression valve is not working correctly.??

I believe its a head gasket issue. i had one of those Kohler Commands that would start and after about a min when it heats up, the gasket allows enough compression loss, and the engine wont run

@@MowersNBlowers what’s it’s doing is a potential sign of a blown head gasket. I myself think the carb is plugged up but a head gasket can and has caused weird symptoms like your experiencing. Spray carb spray or ether into the carb and if the RPMs pick up you know, your carburetor is plugged. If you have another running engine with a carb that will fit swap them as a test.

I had a similar issue and it was the intake valve. I would pull the valve cover and make sure the push rods and rockers are functioning properly. Mine the rocker stud was loose from the head.

Maybe you have an exhaust valve that’s getting hung up or a sticky exhaust valve that’s really weird though I haven’t seen anything like that best of luck hopefully you figure it out

Try disconnecting the kill wire from the coil, maybe one of the interlocks is screwing things up. Could be a hung up valve / valve seat come loose (I had a valve seat op loose on a Quantum earlier this summer and it sounded just like that).

i bet its the carb. i have gotten several brand new carbs that were no good. believe ir or not. brand new and dont work right. even carbs from hipa ive got bad ones. i got a brand new one to put on a kohler courage and it didnt even try to crank. from my experience. but popping could be timing or coil. the compression does seem a little low. but its not low enough to not start up.

That 15 hp crank may have a shorter stroke that the 16 hp crank, causing low compression.

Most likely the only difference on the 2 motors was the stickers. Briggs has been known to label the same exact engine from 14-17~ hp and I’m certain Kohler has done the same. There was a massive class action lawsuit which is why most engines are rated by their torque rating nowadays. I know some of the twins from 18-22HP~ & 22-25HP~ were also identical except the sticker that was slapped on it. I could be off on the exact HP ranges but it’s close enough until you research your particular engines.

Hey Henry! Hope all is well? I'd go with the valves, one is not seating correctly. Are you able too pull the cover and try too start it too see? We had a backfiring problem on a old rider that was the cause, almost identical symptoms too this one.

Have all 3 carbs been new? Maybe a bad casting on this latest one? I had a Craftsman that backfired and popped like crazy, also flooded the intake with gas. Swapped carbs to a new one and it solved my problem. Otherwise, are you getting plenty of gas in the bowl? Kinda seems like it’s just running on what’s in the bowl then dying. Grab some vice grips. Right when it dies, clam the fuel line at the inlet and drop the bowl to see if you have any fuel (before there’s time for the fuel to replenish). I also had a new carb where the float was getting hung up somehow on the bowl inside and once it closed, wasn’t able to drop back down to let more fuel in 🤷🏻‍♂️ Good luck and looking forward to seeing what it is!

I’d do a leak down test. It’s a long shot, but maybe there is a small crack in the cylinder where the bottom of it broke off. Try a whole new fuel line

My guess: the ceramic portion of the spark plug (white part) has a hair line crack. Did you try a different plug?

There’s only three things the motor needs to run, fuel air mixture, spark, and compression. The only thing we couldn’t see was compression.

@@MowersNBlowers Maybe the head gasket has a leak? Maybe the compression release mechanism is malfunctioning in someway? I doubt the rings got stuck inside the piston but that’s a possibility, not likely. And the last thing would be the keyway in the flywheel got sheared. Just coming up with any idea I can imagine. I’m sure you’ll figure it out. ✅👀🍀

i am having the same issue right now. i have tried two different engines and am having the same issue. deleted all safety's, checked valves, compression, engine ground, fuel lines, checked coil and re-gapped, new plug n gapped, inspected engine wire harness, replaced tank. both engines surge, pop and sputter. I have now come to the frusterating conclusion that i received two junk china carbs in a row (rare) so i just ordered two replacement carbs from Hipa. Hopefully this will fix my issue before i throw an engine across the yard!..........smhhhhhh

It’s probably the carb bro! It’s 90% of issues. If the crank key is slightly sheared, the timing may be slightly off and cause popping. Maybe

@@MowersNBlowers I don’t think so, the way they increase horsepower and torque is mostly with the carb and some engine parts some heavy material with some lighter material for more power, same thing with carbs, all engines work the same but the tuning is done with parts no way with their garbage courage parts are anywhere the same quality as the pro variant
