Either the voigtlander 28mm f2 or the zeiss biogon 28 f2.8 seem like they'd suit you far better, excellent image quality from both. A used Leica Q or Q2 would also be an option

Weight and size are such a huge factor for my own enjoyment as well. I recently got that Voigtländer 35/2 macro for my X-T5 and I couldn't be happier. Sure, I could have gotten several f1.4 lenses or even f0.95 at a similar or lower price point, but the Voigtländer is such a perfect smallt package and that's before I factor in the 0.5x magnification, which makes it absolutely unique in the Fuji system!

Size and weight of the camera is always the most import factor to consider when travelling with small kid. That's why the 35 summicron is living on my M10R.

Agree with some of the other comments. A Voigtlander 28mm f2 or the new 2.8 would be a better choice, particularly for travel. The Q is another option, albeit more pricey. It gives you the bright aperture, IBIS, and AF which comes in handy with a little one running around. Put a 50 on your M10 and you’d have a great pairing.

I reviewed this lens when it was first released and found it very impressive optically: but it's quite heavy and long as you mentioned. I think my ideal kit for travel photography in cities, where my gear is going to be on me the entire day, is quite different from when I'm doing a road trip or I'm shooting in my home city, and I think it's good to have options for both situations if you are ok with redundancy!

When I glanced at your thumbnail and title, I assumed this video would be a bait and switch ultimately made to sell some product. Imagine my pleasant surprise when you delivered a very astute, even handed review of this lens - praising its performance, yet critical in why it didn't work for you: bulky size and weight. Well done!

This is validating haha - I considered this lens but instead went for a Zeiss 28 2.8 Biogon, and I’ve been loving that lens. I can see what you mean - the various times I’ve had my M240 and this 28 with family at a restaurant or just walking around, I like its small size and can imagine that a larger heavier lens would get annoying for an EDC

Hey man, just want to ask for advice, if money wasn't an issue, would you get Leica M which manual focusing, or a Hasselblad X2D with single 28mm F4 (22mm FF equivalent) or Sony A7CR with single 20-70mm F4 to use as hobbyist and personal work? What you use to shoot video if your camera only take picture?
@_parkphoto
@_parkphoto 10 месяцев назад
@@NetvoTVwell, personally, I would choose the Leica M. But that’s because I know my brain works that way and I connect with the rangefinder system. And to me Leica make the best built cameras in the world. But everyone is different, so maybe for you the Sony or the Hassy would be the answer.

I no longer own mine, but I second the 28mm 2.8 Biogon recommendation. It is probably the sharpest lens I've ever used and it has that signature Zeiss 3D effect that so many love.

Maybe look at getting a hand grip? I know it takes away from the compactness of the M10 but it could be an option for when you intend to use heavier lenses. Bit of a trade off. Other option is to look at any smaller f2.0/2.8 lenses? Then for speedy focusing, I'd recommend zone focusing. Helped me when I first started using a rangefinder. Hope it helps, great video. Keep it up

Good review. I was on the fence about buying this lens and you pushed me into the "stay away" side of the fence. The f1.4 comes at a price. I walk 6-7 miles during a typical photowalk and I think I need something smaller/lighter.

I've had basically the exactly same experience with my 7Artistans L-Mount 21mm f1.5. It's crazy how heavy it is for the size and I find myself only using f2.0-2.8 unless I want the dreamy vintage look.

my favorite everyday carry lens for my M10 is the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 mk II. It's really really small. wide open it creates really vintage looking images, soft and with a nice 3d look to them, but as soon as you stop it down to f/2 the quality improves immensely and becomes almost clinical looking so i really enjoy getting those two distinct look in one lens ! And yeah did i mention it's small ? it's the smallest lens i own.

I bought used Voigtlander, Leica and Zeiss m-mount lenses for my M10 and M10M. I focus with a rangefinder 99% of the time. All my lenses came to me with spot-on rangefinder calibration. I bought my used lenses from B&H and the Miami Leica store. I would be very hesitant to buy a 7Artisans lens judging by your experience. I totally agree that you would have been happier with the 28mm f/2 Ultron Aspherical ver. II. That Voigtlander will give you great optical performance plus compact size with good ergonomics. Yeah, it costs quite a bit more but thats why I buy used.

TOTALLY agree. I am 69 years old,been a photographer since I was 17. Most people make your mistake. I shoot a M10R,an M10M. For the reason of weight. f2.8 is plenty fast,and Leica lens with that F-stop are very small. Unless,you shoot a lot of interiors,or night photography, anything below F-2, is not needed. AND you save a Crap load of money. My 2 cents.

It's a great lens with excellent image quality regardless of price. When you consider price, it's probably one of the best wide angles lenses out there. The size is an issue. That is the only tradeoff. It's big, but it's not that much bigger than the Summilux. If you don't like the 7Artisans because of the form factor, you would also hate the Summilux. And while it's bigger for a M-Mount lens, the whole setup is still equivalent to a small SLR like a Nikon F3, Canon A1, Contax RX with 28mm lenses which people don't complain about.

Camera shop sales advisor here: People greatly underestimate the ergonomics of gear. This is why mirrorless has taken over so fast. Pretty much all former DSLR shooters are always amazed when holding a flatter lighter body in their hands. But you need to pair it with the right lenses for the right use cases. Otherwise you won’t even use or even bring it.
@Renzsu

Then again, my first M lens was a v1 Nokton 35mm f/1.2. One of the biggest 35mm lenses at that time and I loved it. Easy to grab, no finnicky handling.. it felt over-engineered and very sturdy. All things considered, it was still a small lens (coming from DSLR's). I think the problems start when you get used to the tiny small lenses and then go back to a bigger lens.

Not enough people cover this mismatch of lens size and purpose/fun. As a Sony shooter I love the SonyZeiss 55mm 1.8 but to have it hanging around me it was so annoying. Even worse if using the very deep hood. I swapped it out for the 50mm 2.5 and then even that for the (slightly )sharper but more importantly wider 40mm 2.5. 40 suits that neutral sense of being there that I feel 28mm and 40mm manage to pull off. I love 35mm but the 35mm 1.8 is similarly long like the 55mm. There is the SonyZeiss 35mm 2.8 which is also great but the feature set on the small G lenses really add to the enjoyment.

Odd suggestion, you might want to consider in the future: Not using white as the on screen border to show your images, maybe a neutral grey or black might be better. I found the bright white in conflict with many of the darker night as well as more colourful daytime images ... the white creating contrast to the mood of the image, or our eyes sometimes are not able to fix it or balance the contrast from the border to the image, and colours and levels of darkness gets lost. Beyond that, I found your argument regarding the bulkiness of that lens fine and understandable , but a bit of a chuckle, as I back in the day hoofed around Europe on a month long trip like that, with a full size Canon full framer with the ubiquitous 70-200 2.8 firmly attached to it. Such is the change in the market; equipment gets smaller, peoples expectations and comfort level also shrinks. Made me chuckle.

In addition to amazing optics; leica has an amazing experience to shoot with; but you lose any notion of quality and enjoyment using some crappy chinese garbage like that. Be honest: you got a dream camera, and a garbage lens youll never use again. Save up, get decent glass.
