Something to note: Keep in mind that I'm just a normal guy who loves cars. I'm not a trained mechanic, although my father was. If something interesting car wise comes up, I try to film it and upload it for entertainment and the "look at what I done" factor. Pat me on the back, or give me a "good game" pat on the butt. These videos are meant to inspire other DIYers. Working on cars can be dangerous, even life threatening, if the proper cautionary measurements aren't taken. You also run the risk of damaging your vehicle and or voiding your warranty. If for any reason you feel like the job is too big to handle, I would suggest consulting with a professional mechanic.

Again i really am enjoying your build of this. I was a development engine technician at Chrysler engineering and at 74 years old i can still feel the boost. This is so much better then adding a cold air intake like others do.:-)

I love people who understand how to make hp. There are so many people out here who think cold air intakes, throttle body spacer and headers is going to give them 40 hp.

On certain v8 builds it can. But not a small engine.
@blackericdenice
@blackericdenice 10 месяцев назад
@@dennisrobinson8008 100% wrong. Why do you think motorcycle engines are so strong? My 2011 Kawasaki zx-14 1.4 liter 4 cylinder make 175+hp @ 9,500 rpm. You ever hear v-tec? Honda engines are powerful because they have hot cams.
@dennisrobinson8008
@dennisrobinson8008 10 месяцев назад
@@blackericdenice Yes but to get 40 hp from an exhaust and cold air intake it would have to be an engine of sufficient power thats bottleneck on those components. So a 350hp v8 with an inefficient air box and crappy small cast iron exhaust manifolds will gain 30 to 50 hp from changing those components. I know vtec and vvt get small engine to make power. Especially with boost. So if you had a 1.5 to 2l vvt engine with a factory turbo and it made 250hp stock with a small down pipe and inadequate exhaust and poor air box. It too could gain a substantial amount by correcting the air box and exhaust.

And I'm familiar with gsx making 200hp out of 1.0l and high rpm. Alot can be gleaned from the motorcycle builds.

It would be interesting to see how they would work on a n/a engine. Those should really get that turbo spooling! I will have to keep Crower in mind when I'm looking for a custom grind!
@cmattdabrat
@cmattdabrat 3 года назад
Definitely should! They took care of me. Once It get the engine back in, I'm going to tune it NA, with the turbo going for a ride. Once I get that dialed in, boost time. All boost does is multiply what an NA engine does.

Thanks for the explanation on the how they could regrind for more lift. I've always wondered how this works, I've always been like but they're taking away material how are they adding lift. Also I just bought a used complete engine for my 1.8 to do a similar build as yours but still drive my cruze while doing this. I'm definitely sending in the cams to crower.

They can weld material to the lobe and add material. They can also reduce your base circle.

I am local to Delta and have been planning on taking my cams to them for a while since I know they have experience with cams from my motor. After talking to someone on the phone it was clear that they had no need for the business and no interest in regrinding my cams. Definitely a disappointing experience from them. Anyway thanks for the tip, I'll give Crower a try.

I know this video is from 2020, but if you had been able to source some expensive cams with a decent return policy you could have sent those to Delta Camshaft. They can create tooling off of it, then regrind your cams to that spec. I helped them develop one of their LS camshafts off of a Sloppy Stage 2. From there, anyone who calls and orders in the future can ask for that regrind.
@cmattdabrat
@cmattdabrat Год назад
That's cool. There are no aftermarket manufacturers, thus far, for this engine. So a regrind is the only way to increase lift and duration. They would not fool with it because they are hollow and I just don't think they wanted to hassle with an unfamiliar platform.

@cmattdabrat
@cmattdabrat 3 года назад
Did you buy off the shelf grinds, or have yours reground? From their videos, I thought I'd have a great experience, but I called to make sure it was something they would be interested in. After a month and a half of my cams sitting there, a phone call a week, and having the cams sent back with one of them broken, I can't say I'd recommend them. Crower was super friendly, on top of things... even with the guy handling my account resigning, which was a little setback, it was still a world of difference in experience. Perhaps it's because John retired? I don't know, but I wouldn't recommend them for custom grinds outside of Honda cams.

Dose a regrind like this require upgraded springs ?

For NA applications with overhead cams, it doesn't because they don't require that much spring pressure. I did however upgrade my springs to keep the valves seated under boost.

Not much lift, but more duration. An extra 30º at .050 and .15 more lift. If nothing else, you could call them up and or send your cams to them and they'll tell you what they can do. They were really helpful with telling me what the stock specs were, how much lift and duration the regrind would add, and even ground in some advance for my turbo application.

@@cmattdabrat Yeah we have been working with Crower for over 6 years now cutting our Honda Acura V6 J series Stage 1-2 camshafts. For the most part they are spot on. But also as Delta they never cut a J series cam until we came along so they don't have the development time in the cams (only specs and what some people may have said worked well or didn't) but we do Being we dynoed and are indeed all of them, they simply cut them. One thing I didn't like was the zero proprietary nature of our specs with Crower being open to anyone taking them. This is why we stop reporting back what the cams do (AKA gains) and we even sent in some random specs to cut just to throw people off our scent, as competition literally openly said they would just copy our specs which they have or at least try to but they got the wrong specs 🤣🤦
