Who cares? Pro players are involved in insider knowledge, no skin off my back. Insider “trading” at WOTC, doesn’t affect my world. None of any of it really has any bearing on the casual player. If cards are too expensive, no problem, I just play with what I own. Rudy’s correct about how most players don’t watch MTG online content, the majority of players I know don’t(OK maybe about half, but still). The Pro world and things like MTG finance are just meaningless to most casual players.
I'm a former "professional" MtG player, the Pro Leagues or whatever they called themselves these days have been corrupt since the 90s. They also have the same mentality as a high school clique.
Can i ask i a question? As an ex pro player whats ur opinion on people copying decks from "pros" Like i wish people would just make there own decks For me its seem boring and un creative to just copy decks from pros

I’ve been playing kitchen table magic on and off since ‘97. Never been to an fnm or any organized event. None of my play groups have ever cared about standard or modern. The only card we ever banned was isochron scepter. I appreciate Rudy saying it like it is, looking at the big picture.
You're describing me and my family spot on there Rudy. At our house, its Wednesday night magic not Friday night cause Wednesdays my cousin comes around and its thunder dome time MTG style. My mother can barely read the cards and my son is an asshole that plays an old unstable deck, there's yelling and screaming, cards get thrown.. and we love it!
Nothing beats watching somebody explain to you how they discovered fire as they open their Tombstone Stairwelll deck's god draw against you and you say "uh huh, Tormond's Crypt, go"

This was pretty spot on Rudy! I have played this great game since the beginning and I walked away from the tournament scene when it was still labeled Type I, 1.5 and 2. Every game Con I go to, to run other events, all the guys bring their decks and we do open Battle Circle. It is amazing how many random players hop in to have FUN! Without the forced restrictions of the tourney scene for decks...we always have amazing games and see some cool ass crazy combos happen. Thanks for keeping it real and speaking for the usually silent majority!
From my understanding, Magic has changed the format of one of the competition from modern to standard, and warned some pro league in advance that they were strongly considering this option so that they can start preparing themselves to the standard meta before the official announce. I don't think we know how many weeks or months in advance they got the info. (The part which is maddening is not the insider info itself, it is that Austin, the guy who made this leak public, and the top Magic player according to Elo rating, has been banned from every competition and any organised magic play, and have all its magic accounts suspended including for casual play, until he betrays the trust of the whistleblower by giving his name to Wizard. Or in Wizard's own word "Any petition regarding this suspension must include information pertinent to our investigation [about the breach of non-disclosure agreement that resulted in the insider info being made public]")
Thats what I always say, excellent message, Rudy. My friends dont care about tournaments, bans, official rules, Standard, Modern, blah blah. We are playing like almost everbody I know with F&F at home just for fun like 99,9 percent of the magic players. We are cracking packs, collecting stuff, drinking some beer and enjoying life. As soon as things get restricted, professional or organized, people begin to behave silly and feel important. It's just a game that should make our lives more enjoyable.
I can attest to how wizard's operates i worked at one of their retail locations and when we got hired we had to sign a NDA. Somebody at our location violated the NDA and was fired and sued. We had a list of every magic product coming out for the next year and half to two years. We were told that if a customer came and asked about a set that hadn't been released we were told to ask the customer to hold on a second while I asked a manager and then the manager was supposed to basically interrogate the customer on where he got the info. Wizard's/hasbro sent secret shoppers twice a month to make sure we weren't violating the NDA
The fact that the competitive scene is rigged is a big concern. What saves magic is the fact that, despites it horrendous ponzi schizophrenia inducing business model, it is a VERY good game. If you remove the fairness it taints the good parts of the game at a point that it doesn't salvage the bad aspects anymore. The brutal turn over potential is quite real. What makes magic stay afloat is no more the people who play on the kitchen table, it is the wanna be pros who min max on mtgo, mtga and at their local store and we are all pissed off atm. If you kill the competitive of magic, no more reprints, no more standard. It would rekt at least 3/4 of the new cards market.

The only magic I really play any more is just kitchen table, get together with friends and partners, order some pizza and grab some beer and wine, grab a bunch of pre-release kits from ebay and have a fun night with friends.
Since internet has taken so much place, negative fans are really loud. As if their voice actually mattered now that it can be seen. Loud negative minority is still a minority. Enjoy the game if you enjoy it and don't worry about those toxic ''fans''. That's my tip for everyone. Negative people will always complain about something and surprisingly, they are never responsible about their unhappiness...
You're 100% right. Big majority is playing kitchen magic / EDH in my playgroup. I stockpile prerelease kits so we can catch up when the backstreet boys' tour around the world is over. Not interested in double masters. But I'm gonna get my position in core 2020, things are way underpriced AND fun to draft :)
Serious Thoughts: Quit cold turkey in 2016 before moon. Right decision for myself and honestly following the drama from that time through Amonkittykat it's laughable that anything could approach the negativity and real heat the game and players felt in the past 5 years. Really its digital that may make a dent and yet here we are bigger than ever in paper. I feel like geek-poltical drama went out in the mid 2010s. The game is here to stay, most have fun with kitchen table and honest the heights from Time Spiral - RtR are not going to be match. Enjoy and scoop up the bargins and work hard. Hopefully we can all chill a bit more this decade.
Well said, that is the reason why I keep watching your channel. People been saying how magic is done already and yet this same people are still here playing magic and keep saying the same old rant. At the end of the day, you just keep playing this game since the 90's becoz bottom line is you enjoy doing it.
This isn’t the first time this has come out. There was something similar about 10 years ago. There’s an atmosphere of favoritism at Wizards, as well as in much of the community.
Ive been playing magic since about 1993. I no longer collect cards and just like to play online with my nephew and the friend i started with in '93. I don't watch a lot of magic vids on you tube either but i do like this channel. I'm just in it to try to build as many original decks i can and use all the cards i can in different style decks. I pay absolutely no attention to the pro leagues or any of that stuff. I found this channel and watched rudy open a bunch of legends packs. brought me back to my early days and loved seeing the old cards freshly opened again. anyways im the new guy and keep up the good work!
Ummm... can't we just play MTG because we like to play and hang out with friends? Why does Rudy think that only people who have bad jobs, bad bosses, or need to escape a bad life are playing MTG? It is a fun hobby for me and I really enjoy my job and my life. Why can't people like me play MTG?

The thing is.. sure there's million and millions of Magic players.. and youtube is a small amount.. but if you add reddit, twitter, and all the people that reads articles does add up. and I love how the fact that Rudy danced around the subject and didn't want to even mention the heart of the controversy which was how WoTC DIC banned Austin Bursavich, one of the top pro-league players of MTG because he leaked info on how the next MTG pro-league competition was going to move to digital. It's a big deal because players who didn't get the news early on would have to somehow get a stacked MTGA account just so they can have their deck. WOTC tried to get Austin to release his sources of the leak, and under no obligation was Austin going to reveal anything because he didn't sign any NDA, so in retaliation WOTC DCI banned Austin. It's true tho that most MTG players will never care about the pro-tour, and most are into EDH, but can you imagine Magic without modern/legacy/standard/pioneer... and most of the market is in EDH where WOTC doesn't have control of EDH rule's committee? People aren't concentrated into EDH because they like EDH a lot, but rather they'll rather play EDH then play standard/modern/legacy/pioneer or any competitive format because how scummy they have been, not to mention how the market is manipulated because of all the insider info and leaks that was going on.
this game reflects its company and playerbase...that's why I sold out and never put any money into the cardboard since 2005...Im happier that way...and glad you brought me Force of Will
It's weird that Rudy is so adamant about high-level play not mattering. The gaming industry is usually really good at propping up the highest level of play as a marketing platform.
Excellent take! You're right, my friends and I are kitchen table players. I have spent about $160 on an actually good modern deck. But the hundreds more throughout my 20's I've spent has been purely for fun.
You're right Rudy. Magic is an excuse for friends to get together and have a good time. It's a way to shift the focus into problem solving - how can I make this deck broken or fun to play? Is it jank or are the combos cool? To Sharknado (or not)?
