My Dad introduced me to Rovers (with him having countless Montegos, many 800s including a very high mileage but tidy Mk2 820i on 310k miles, a very rare TWR kitted Mk1 820i and a Mk1 820 Tickford Turbo) so much so that I started my driving career with a 214 SEi in 2001. Since then, I've had 2x 214 SEis, a 220 GSi, a 216 Coupe and 2x genuine 420 GSi Turbos. The Turbos were modified tastefully but quite substantially and received nothing but praise from even the most hateful of Rover haters. I sold my last 420 GSiT in 2015 due to a growing family and bought an Impreza WRX (big Subaru fan since school). I had the WRX for a year, sold it and bought my dream car... an Impreza WRX STi. To keep it company (and with my Rover roots) I added an MG ZT diesel and a nice example of an MX5 SVT. But I'm a Rover man at heart and really missed the 420T... so tomorrow, I pick up a 420 SLI with a twist... it has a 620Ti lump. Unfortunately, not quite a genuine 420T but it'll get all the same love and treatment as my other 420s and soon be wearing all of the 420 GSi body parts. Love the vids, you've got yourself another subscriber.
My first experience of a Rover ( or at least the one I remember!) is when my Boss at the time got a 6month old 216 GTi in red. He traded a very tidy XR4 and never regretted it. I can remember it going through at three ignitor boxes though. After that, around 1994, my Uncle had a lovely base spec 213 with the Honda engine and that did sterling service until replaced in the early 2000s by a Citroen ( we don't talk about the Citroen!) Fortunately, my other uncle saw sense and bought a V6 75 connie in dark blue, which I borrowed to go to the highlands. ( My MGF was fine for this, but we fancied a waft) My MGF 1800vvc did a fine tour of duty, I put 160,000 odd miles on her and the only mechanical "fail" was a seized alternator after a winter lay off (soon unseized, only cost, a new belt) Fast forward to this year and I acquired Rosie, as featured on my terrible channel. £200 bargain, from just under a year old until 2020 it was in the same family. Still under 100,000 miles. I love these things. Top spec Rovers always had nicer interiors than the other British offerings. My sister had nothing but trouble with Astras etc. I'll hopefully be keeping Rosie for a good while. I have to go now, there's an Aldi cheese and ham pastie in the microwave!
Found your channel via Hubnut's Facebook comments section. My parents have owned several R8's over the years. An H reg base spec 3 door, a 1.4 five door 200 SEi and an R8 Tourer. I'm currently restoring my 1992 216 GTi twincam. Love driving it, mechanically tough but shame the aftermarket sector doesn't do body panels.
My Rover History goes back to the 90's . My first car i hate to say was a Ford Cortina , that got t boned by a Kid ( i was a kid as well lol ) in a T reg manta. My next car was the one that got me into Rovers . D186YAN was a White Base Model SD3 , 213 .Me and my mate painted the bottom bit Grey , My next one was G409LYA a Gunmetal Grey Rover Montego 1.6L , best car i've ever owned , i ran that into the ground then in 2000 i bought M819JPM a White Rover 418GSDT and my first R8 and went like stink, Then i moved onto two 800s a 820Si fastback again in white on a R reg then a Nightfire red 825Si saloon on an S plate, then 75,s 02 plate Conny se in light green , then a 53 plate tourer diesel, then a 56 plate conny tourer that got tboned again. Then i went all modern with a horrible 14 plate Insignia that spent more time at the dealer than on the road , witch brings me to my latest ones F340CCL - Rover 213S - Azure Blue L89HOM - Rover 414SLi - nightfire red, sold as it had been lowered and gave me a badback K227GVC - Rover 216SLi - Silver - Sold to fund the 45 KU53LNM - Rover 45 1.6 Classic saloon - Arun White - Haven't driven it to much wrong - sold L545LNM - Rover 414SLi - Ice Blue - arrives this weekend and just noticed the last letters match the 45. Great video, lov the 220 and ur red 420 esp that photo of it at 9.16 my first rover was a 1988 213,414,418,800 hatchback, and a 98 200 brought new still have it and it's like new,we'll never get rid of it
I've had loads of Rovers back in the day, (214, 216, 416 & 420) can't remember having a diesel though. Everyone I knew was into ford & vauxhall. And the "unreliable" Rovers Never let me down and still believe I made the better choice.
Av always had a soft spot for the Rover. My brother's had the 800 with T series I have had the 416 I have also had 3 45's I also had a few MG ZRs and the 25s they never really broke down on me either.👍
