I share my expenses as a 24 year old software engineer working in big tech in Sydney, Australia. Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in and I wanted to shed some light on how I spend my money here.
Hope it's helpful!

Hi Victor, can I get your thoughts on programs such as the earn and learn initiative from WiseTech Global and if it is beneficial/worthwhile to apply to.

Congrats man! B2 is around 145-150k base so I think you will get a sizeable bump! I also worked as a B2 there until very recently I was unexpectedly let go by my coach towards the end of my probation. Lots of nice people at Canva unfortunately I lucked out due to my coach being kinda tough and hands off so I didn't know I was doing that bad since my projects were going fine. Apparently I didn't 'hit all the bars`, no detailed explanations from the coach, just a zoom meeting and see ya later :(
@VictorFang
@VictorFang 3 месяца назад
Yep just recently got a bump in that range! Dang that's really unfortunate to hear.. I feel like it's so dependent on how 'nice' your coach is and the range is very wide. Are you finding a new job? If so, how's it going?

@@VictorFang Interviewing at the moment, market for mid level engineers is not as bad as it's for juniors. Pay is slightly less than Canva and perks aren't as nice.

I forgot to add it in but do you think that going to USNW instead or UofT or other universities in UK like Manchester is worth it? I really like UNSW and Australia in general but I heard that the other universities are more reputable
@VictorFang
@VictorFang 3 месяца назад
I don't think university reputation matters as much as how good the CS faculty in that university is. Ask around for those who've been in the positions before for their opinion. I reckon UNSW is quite good for CS in Australia but I can't say for places outside of the country

In Australia, they don't care much about which Uni you went to. They will hire you based on your performance during interview. I studied in Adelaide (cheaper living cost) and I currently work for an IT company in Sydney (I can save 70%+ of my salary by working remotely). I prefer you choose the most affordable place to study if you come to Australia. It is quite expensive to live in Sydney as a student.
@Pewpewz

University means nothing. In most cases it’s a waste of time. You can learn more, faster, online. If you know enough to pass interviews, and you have a good personality, you’ll get the job. If you work for a company that cares about a uni degree over what you actually know then you’re working for a company that values paper over knowledge. Large corporations and government, which are the worst to work for. Startups with large investments or scale ups making a load of cash is where it’s at.

Just gotta say, the concept of tithings is insane... especially after knowing first hand how the money is spent (wasted). I would suggest putting the money into donations to worthy causes (e.g. World Vision or Red Cross if you're religious)

@Nerdificationing
@Nerdificationing 3 месяца назад
@VictorFang It's worse than you think if you do some more research and read the Bible some more. Tithing is not a Christian doctrine. In fact it is the very reason Jesus was killed. 2000 years ago, a man could not be arrested for no crime or public outrage only. Jesus’ judge, Pilar concluded on the trial he does not see any crime in Jesus’ action and Jesus dies saying “they don’t know what they are doing”. So what crime did put Jesus on a cross? It is written in the Bible but many churches do not discuss it. When Jesus arrives in Jerusalem for the first time, he goes to the temple to pray, and finds that temple is running a business scam, selling sacrificial pigeons and God offerings, running money exchanges and loans and preaching that God would be angry if you don’t give to God (ahem tithe). So he violently chases the scammers away, turns tables and says to the crowd that this is not Gods way. The crowd supports him and welcomed him to the city. Interestingly this is the only story in the Bible where Jesus is aggressive and angry with something. A week later, Jesus is arrested in another temple after being betrayed by Judas. It does not take Sherlock Holmes to understand what happened. The church officials were afraid of a man with such following preaching common sense, were worried about the business model they were running and have used their influence over the public to enrage a group of people to kill Jesus. When Jesus says that they do not know what they are doing, he is absolutely right, as the group of people that kills him has been manipulated by corrupt priests in the city. Similar level of corruption has been seen in Catholic Church in 16th century that broke the Church and weaken its influence in the world. So we know that manipulating people to give and offer to God is wrong from Jesus’ experience. Another argument against tithe is that the tithe originated from the Old Testament which is abolished by the New and thus does not apply. And also St Paul teaches to give not to damage yourself but of your own heart and capability. Despite all of this, many churches preach tithing and twist the Bible because most believers don’t actually read it, but rather only hear pastor’s twisted interpretations. One of the most common arguments for tithing is that during Abraham, 10% was given to God and in return God would bless the crop 100folds. This story is used to illustrate that whatever you saw in Gods name, 100 times you will get in return. Because sowing and growing are natural process under Gods dominion. This is what most tithe oriented churches preach today. There are two arguments against this: 1. Old Testament only speaks of tithes in form of crops, not money or income. Crop and money are not comparable, one is natural, the other one is man made concept. You saw a seed and it will grow and you can consider it as something under dominion of God. Money is not of God, you put money in the ground,it will not grow. In fact, money is favorite tool of the devil when he tempts believers and prophets in the Bible. Faith in the Bible actually has a definition, it is a hope, outside your own senses in things you do not know. Sawing a crop does fall into the faith because the outcome of the harvest is in God’s hands. Rules of the money in contrasts are well known if you study it properly, you can multiply your money 5 times by overpaying your mortgage or 30 times if you invest in index fund, money is not a mysterious natural process, it changes in time under very well known processes which of you study then you can grow your estate and make decisions that would increase your value in time. 2. If after all this, you still believe that sawing your offering to God will give you bountiful harvest through your faith,then pay attention to the most important aspect of tithing: it is for the God, not the church. In the Old Testament, tithes were done by burning the crop, nowadays, it is illegal to burn the money, but you need to ensure it goes to God. So how do you give it? Well, Jesus is role model of Christians, he spent his entire life on Earth helping others, the best way to give your tithe to God is to take it and pass it to someone in need. Go help someone, feed a hungry child or whatever. You do not know exactLu how your church would use your tithe,but if you unselfishly help someone,you will undoubtedly give to God and do his work. Alternatively you could invest 10% of your savings and will it to various charities when you pass away.

May Christ forgive all of us (current, former, and future former) fiat-chasers who pursued a spot at the table He would have flipped… As Christ said to the money-changers in Matthew 21:13, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers.” The money-changers robbed the people by corrupting the weights and measures, thereby inflating the prices they paid. Christ is King, and He condemned the corruption of money. Since #Bitcoin is incorruptible money, surely Christ the King would approve.
