Wanna know what I think, Mark? I think yer dad is feeling very validated by having you work with him in his shop. From one putterer to another - I really liked having my kids, and now grandkids doing and learning beside me in mine.

thing are working out well for you. I lived on a sailboat for 20 years and did all my own repairs and upgrades. now that I am in my late 70's it is too much work. I really think it is great what you are accomplishing. Make sure you thank your dad a lot. You are very lucky to have him.

Not overkill. Wharrams are sailed with rather loose rigging. Also, as being catamarans, they don’t heel as easy as a monohull. Both of these factors mean that the forces on the chainplates can build up much greater than on similar seized other boats
@user-qk9tq1rt7o
@user-qk9tq1rt7o 5 месяцев назад
@@alfreddaniels3817 The chain plates take the load and transfer it to body the boat. The backing plates only ensure the chain plate bolts do not pull thru the hulls and help spread the load to the hull. They do very nothing to enhance the strength of the hull Doubling the chain plates themselves is not a bad idea. But way overkill on the backers, adds weight for nothing. at most doubling the area around the bolts only. Ultimately all the load is transferred by the bolts, if they are too small or weak the size of the backer wont make any difference.
@alfreddaniels3817
@alfreddaniels3817 5 месяцев назад
It depends how strong the body of the boat is it at the place where the chainplates are connected. Chainplate at the outside and backingplates on the inside are bolted together with the hull between them. They act as one and spread the loads to a larger surface of the hull and to stronger parts of the boat. There are boats that have backingplates that go all the way down to the keel where that is the strongest part of the hull. There are boats where the “ backingplates” are a complete internal steelframe, like a bulkhead.

Great job Mark but I guess the next problem you’ll have is how to attach these incredibly strong steel reinforced backing plates to your already weak spongy bulkheads. Two different materials? Remember ocean gate!!!

Wharram was a genius, when he designed these. some of the best boats ever to ply a chop! on tops of that you will gained skills that last a lifetime, and you can even use to make money when travelling!

A good tip to help when welding stainless is to brace it up while your welding it, that's how you eliminate a fair amount of warpage. Its important not to grind away too much of the weld to make it look pretty you want to have strength and integrity left after you've finished cleaning up the weld. but looks like it should be ok for what your using it for. nice to see you've acquired some welding skills. Mark. Its a handy skill to have.

Mark, for your chain plates are you going to get ahold of a foundry and have some bronze ones built or are you going to stick with making your own with stainless steel?? Those backing plates are definitely going to be indestructible and overbuilt but the material was free and all you had to do is provide the elbow grease and sweat.. its pretty cool being an American and seeing your dad fly our flag and a Texas state flag.. also see the southern USA being represented in the loft.. how cool..
