Honestly- the thing im going to miss most was the animation. Using Kaiten, the sword flourish animation works perfectly with the iajutsu animation, and it felt SO cool. In fact- one of the things that made me feel so cool while playing the class, which, made me keep playing the game when I started first playing it last summer. I'm definitely sad about this one.

The game will keep on getting easier and easier and more casualized with less buttons the more it goes on. We’ve seen it time and time again. The homogenization of tanks and healers in ShB, the removal of Hagakure in ShB (thankfully they had half a brain cell to put it back into the game but that clearly shows that no one there had any idea how SAM was properly played), the change in Trick attack, removal of ASTs old Cary system to replace it with a simple mainstreamed dps buff, tank stances generating 10x additional aggro, etc. I’ll give SE credit where credit is due, they know their audience. They know the large majority of their players suck at the game and just afk In Limsa while swiping on whatever new glam is put into the Mogstation. They know how to appease their whales.

The problem is used to buff only your iaijutsu. At that point you might as well just add the potency to the actual weapon skill. kaiten looks cool but its still button bloat. Shinten on the other hand at least requires more skill to well where you actually have to manage gauge compared to kaiten where you are just forced to use it before every iaijutsu. That said it is weird they chose kaiten as the place to fix button bloat

@neximer1028
@neximer1028 2 года назад
I heard that the ‘button bloat’ quote is actually a mistranslation and that ‘action bloat’ would closer. The difference being that rather then trying to reduce the number of buttons you could press, they are attempting to reduce the number of buttons you would need to press in any one situation (like a burst window). Since you would never need to press Senei & Guren or Shoha & Shoha II in the same burst window it makes a bit more sense in this context why they would target Kaiten over them for removal. I still don’t like the change at all, but it makes a bit more sense in the context of the actual translation.
@bigybop
@bigybop 2 года назад

@saleenf5
@saleenf5 2 года назад
@@neximer1028 the problem with action bloat is that unless they change the cost of stuff or kenki generation the majority of the kaitens we would have pressed are still going to be around just as shinten instead. People have done rough math and at current costs the removal of kaiten during an encounter and turning all that kenki into more shintens ends up beings a reduction of less than one action per minute. It's an extremely small change that has created a not so small backlash.
@neximer1028
@neximer1028 2 года назад
@@saleenf5 @saleenf5 When SE refer to action bloat, I think they mean 'the number of unique actions you have to worry about doing at any one point' and not APM. This makes more sense considering the changes they made and how they mentioned they were thinking of targeting classes like dragoon (which has middling APM, but due to the amount of oGCDs it has 'very busy' burst phases with lost of unique button presses). I'm not defending SE's actions, I hate the changes with a passion as a SAM main and think they were completely unnecessary and were a huge negative for the class in terms of feel and style. But it does make me roll my eyes when people bring up combining shoha I/II and senei/guren, which while not bad suggestions, don't make any sense given the above definition of 'action bloat' I certain SE is using to as you would *never* press shoha I AND II or senei AND guren in the same burst window.

I just started 6.1 and I have to say...these changes are actually dreadful. I went in optimistic, but here are my thoughts: 1. If they all crit, none of them crit. Cone is always bad. You need to properly aim character in the front of your bigger mobs. Otherwise, you just use it with lesser mobs. Like how you can properly aim your character correctly in the middle of big mobs while using tenka goken?? Making goken become a circle makes my play easier since i don't need to aim my character position anymore. Hate those cone attacks. Straight lines is better
@LordoftheDice
@LordoftheDice 2 года назад
After trying it out for a while, I can say I liked cone because you could stand outside of the AoE's in the middle of a mob pack and still do damage. Do you combo attacks to get Sen and by then mobs are putting down AoE's. So, you're gonna have to move out of them anyway. Move to a place where you can hit them in a cone and boom. The range and width of the cone was pretty generous. Now. the ring AoE around you feels tiny and if you have to move out of mob AoE's, you're probably going to end up missing some of them.
@Boyzby

This really nails it. When the expansion came out, I had to find new places for the new skills and that was kind of annoying. There's no reason Ogi Namakiri couldn't just take over the "give Kenki" button, since it's not only is it only available then anyways, both button just sit there for 2 minutes otherwise. Instead of elegant solutions, they just ripped out the sink from the wall and even have to do more work because of it.

I main sam too, Kaiten is actually pretty important to the feel of the Job. If they want to roll in button bloat they need to roll Shoha 2 and 1 or make Ikishoten go with Ogi. I feel like they either dont want to take away our newer toys or they might just be getting rid of Kaiten because its really difficult to balance around. If you're a casual, you can get by in the game just fine by doing your 1-2-3's and popping whatever skill CDs you see without any real rotation. @@Hyuinn This is why I don't understand why people care so much about Kaiten, it's the definition of bloat, it literally just makes your next attack crit, THAT'S IT. Like, what people are harping on is the fact that they can't guarantee what THEY want to Crit. Kaiten allowed to choice to make whatever you wanted Crit, so people are just pissy they can't make Crit what they want. Honestly, it has nothing to do with Kaiten's actual purpose, people have gotten used to using this rotation, and enjoy the animation. I swear, give them a placebo and they won't even notice it was gone. No just, just add a skill that plays Kaiten's animation, does nothing, and makes their "big boom" skills glow for the dopamine hit. Personally, I get the usage, but it's only actual usage was making your next ability crit, which is a fundamental mechanic. So unless you're mad that your whole build is based on Crit and now you have to change it cause' you can't guarantee whatever you want to crit (like you said, DoTs), then you didn't actually care about the job or it's playstyle, you cared about that big shiny number that happened when you used Kaiten, you cared about a dopamine hit. I completely agree though, having a trait that made those abilities always Crit would be a good replacement, we have a small replacement, but to many it won't be enough. I expect them to bring back Kaiten in the form of an actual ability that does something instead of guarantees a game mechanic. Like, what's the point of crits if you can guarantee them? What's the point of being able to guarantee every ability you want to simply crit? It literally bypasses a fundamental part of the game. It was fine before, it was limited due to it's cooldown and cost but really was it limited? Wasn't hard getting your kenki guage and timing Kaiten as part of your rotation, that's why people are pissed after all. The damage SAM could do because of it was keeping it consistently at the top because other jobs didn't have what SAM had. Imagine giving every melee DPS a Kaiten, that'd be the only way to deal with this, have it work into the classes mechanic (like Kaiten as a jutsu for Ninja, Kaiten uses your blood or soul gauge on Reaper, etc), then just remove Crit Chance entirely because you can just guarantee it. @SH1NK1R01
@SH1NK1R01 2 года назад
That wouldn’t change anything at all. The amount of damage added by the crit stat isn’t actually that much so adding that same effect on to the crit buffs wouldn’t add enough damage to counteract the fact that classss like war just don’t get anything out of it. Sure it would make it so that they get like a tiny bit of damage instead of no damage at all. But it’s not enough of an issue to really matter. If you are worried about team synergy then you are in a static and can move people around if needed. And if you aren’t in a static then nothing anyone does will help, since you can’t control the party at all.

Pressing Kaiten before Iaijutsu has been so deeply ingrained in my muscle memory that I might honestly leave that spot empty on my hotbar just so I can still press it before Iaijutsu. To me this change is pretty bad overall. Guaranteed Crit feels bad since it essentially changes the entire melding process for Samurai since those abilities are where the brunt of the damage comes from (+ Higanbana). I don't understand very well why change Kaiten at all. Ikishoten + Ogi makes sense, Shoha I and II being the same button as well, but removing one of the things that makes the job feel cool and has always been a core thing about the job just feels wrong. I don't think button bloat is a problem at all at the current moment even. They already removed Seigan and ME, giving room for the new Ogi Namikiri button where they used to be. In a future expansion if they decide to add more buttons, they could justify the change, but as things currently stand, not really, no. Here's hoping they revert the change after seeing the community feedback.

100% agree. I'm a samurai main and what I like about the job - what makes it unique compared to other melee - is the volume and variety of OGCDs that aren't cooldown-based. Removing Kaiten would make the resource management (and more importantly, resource spending) effectively mindless - just use Hissatsu: Senei/Guren instead of Shinten/Kyuten when able and don't overcap. Technically you might still want to bank 10 for mobility options, but that's wildly uninteresting compared to Kaiten being a combat staple. Your proposed solutions are spot-on - there's no reason to remove Kaiten given their stated goal. I wasn't happy about them removing Hissatsu: Seigan either - their changes to samurai are incrementally undoing what I like about the job.

Wait are they really removing hissatsu kaiten? Why? It's fun. The game is supposed to be fun. And is button bloat really even that big of an issue on samurai? Honestly I'm getting kind of sick of removing buttons that may not have tons if uses (or in this case get used a lot) because it makes jobs kind of difficult to learn or understand or whatever the argument the dev team makes is. Remember when third eye broke it would open up 2 new abilities to use? I don't care how infrequently I used those abilities, or how bad they were, it was fun to use third eye on aoe damage and then get rewarded with those new actions. Why streamline things if it doesn't also make things more fun?

To be honest, yes, samurai had and now still has insane button bloat. It's the only job, using ctrl+shift+1234 qef and (ctrl/shift+)mouse 4/5, that still leaves me with too few buttons to comfortably have everything at hand. I needed to put guren on 7 which is too far to reach casually, and I think something's on shift+5. It really does have button bloat and they didn't help the issue with the new skills like shoha II. I'm fine having shoha I be II with 50% on secondary like dancer aoe has. I don't think there's enough situations where you *don't* want to aoe for a minor amount of damage exist outside of some ultimates where the question is if you even need to use that ability in that situation, not to mention summoner getting aoe on almost every big hit and astral flow making the argument of "we need to be able to control if we're aoe-ing!!"... pretty weak.

Don't play SAM but just a small correction: button bloat != action bloat. The problem that the devs had here was that kaiten was used to buff pretty much the exact same attacks every time with no real variance, so they didn't see the point of keeping the action if it's always used in tandem with the exact same skills. What you were describing in your video was button bloat. I'm not going to pretend I know if they were right or wrong, just explaining their reasoning and correcting your misconception.

Yeah but i think it functions under the same principle. More button = more actions. While sam has lots of buttons, they add more style and feel to the class. Its just me but by having lots of button to press and way to manage your kenki, it makes gameplay more fun and change the dynamic of rotation. This is the whole reason i cannot stand DNC (sorry to all dnc main out there), they have less button to press and its combo is depend on rng. I would prefer them to keep sam as it is. If they wanna change something to reduce the number of actions, stack abilities on top of each other just like ogi. Save spaces which in turn reduce action bloat
@TruckECheez
@TruckECheez 2 года назад
@@akiramurakami3177 Yeah and maybe in the future they'll add another button to replace it, but that's just the devs' perspective of the issue. Personally, I think that instead of straight up removing the button they should've replaced it with something else to use kenki on, which would not only solve their problem with action bloat (pressing the same button before the same actions) but also add more nuance to the gameplay. Because sure pressing more buttons is fun, but let's be real: there's no reason why it has to be its own button. They can and should just replace it with a new mechanic instead IMO.

I kind of feel like that ever since Stormblood (or specifically launch of Shadowbringers) they've been simplifying/removing bloat too much. And we're now at a point that probably half or more of the jobs kind of lost their identity and/or complexity, like all the healers and tanks basically feeling like minor edits of eachother at this point(like DRK unironically being tuned into WAR 2.0 in ShB).

Here's another idea: why not make Tsubame-gaeshi activate on a 2nd tap of Iaijutsu? Tsubame is more or less used only on Midare or Tenka, since on very rare occasions you use it with Higanbana. Even better, why not give Meikio Sinsui a True North effect too? Their CDs line up almost perfectly (with Sinsui being 50 sec and True North a 45 sec CD) so that it condenses further the skill bloat. Maybe even give Hissatsu:Yaten a button chance to Enpi if you hit it? In mobility situations it'd help to not need to hit 2 buttons at once. At least to me as a SAM player these changes make the most sense to try and do. Kaiten being removed feels a bit like a slap in the face for how the class works. I personally like that both Shohas and Shinten/Kyuten are separate (mostly because it helps with how I set them up on bars), so I have no issue really with the way they're made. Lastly, I personally would rather they make up their mind on the AOE baseline skills. Fuka was directional, going into Oka or Mangetsu, which are round hits, and then using Kaiten+Tenka which is directional. Then you have Guren which is directional with Shoha II which is round. It's extremely confusing to keep track on AOE situations on what to use since now Fuka turns to Fuga, which is rounded arc, making you sit through a whole GCD chain as: Round (Fuga), round(Mangetsu/Oka), round(Fuga), directional (Guren), round (Oka/Mangetsu), directional (Tenka Goken). And after 3 minimum repeats of this, add on top a rounded arc (Shoha II)? It just feels like the AOE rotation had more issues with how it's now designed than Kaiten brough ever. If anything, Kaiten's only 'sin' is the fact that it's given so early instead of Hissatsu:Shinten because you more or less use it on early levels just to buff your iaijutsu, Gekko, Yukikaze or red finisher.

You said nearly everything I was thinking Kaiten is a core mechanic for the Samurai, giving you something to think instead of dumping every kenki you generate. The forced crit is super good for reducing the meta around buffing a Samurai to the extreme and make him rely way less on RNG. The forced crit is only on 4 GCD in the burst windows... So any buff crit is still good to have. It feel more like a nerf for those jobs buffing crit chance instead of reducing SAM DPS. Maybe with a bit of chance they'll give us back Kaiten

I do agree with you on most things here but when it comes ikishoten changing to ogi while that makes sense, in theory you could say for every melee combo. shifu could change to kasha and jinpu to gekko since why would use those outside of the combo. can say the same thing for every melee combo too. on paladin fast blade could change to riot blade and it to royal authority. making actions change to other actions once you use them is a slippery slope that would lead to hotbars looking empty

I started playing FF14 when SB get released. The sam sold me this game. I've always played it even when ppl was saying that SAM is trash cuz it has no group utilities yati yata. I was like, yes, BUT it brings BIG dmg, like BLKM. I do care about numbers, especially SAM numbers. The feel you have when you build up that moment to unleash that big oof skill is priceless. And now, it's gone. My love is gone. Have to move on to REAP, it's stylish sure, but feels "hollow", you just spaming attacks. You don't have that build up feels like SAM does. That's why SAM was unique. These changes are unecessary IMO. SAM was in a good spot, why did you do that SE ?! Sorry about that long com, but I'm pissed and sad.

Ever since ShB the devs seem to think that an "interesting decision" for dps players is "do I press the single target button or the aoe button?" This Kaiten change reinforces that, lowering the skill ceiling for SAM, the only one of two difficult-to-master dps jobs left, once again. I bet the only reason BLM is even hard is that Yoshi-P personally axes everything the balance team comes up with. I can't wait to see how they decided to make DRG - the easiest melee - easier.

SAM is definitely not "difficult to master". It's not a hard job at all. In fact it's pretty easy to learn and play well. This change is making it even easier, but I still don't like it. RIP Kaiten 😞

@@SambreakerSasaki I'd argue Third Eye management on raidwides and targeted aoes, as well as storing and spending kenki the most in TA/ the 2 min window were "higher skill ceiling" optimizations, as opposed to the static rotation of, say Ninja, that has a high skill floor instead (but all abilities line up just right for TA). So the job remains not hard but it's also fun to optimize.

One thing they could do to alter this change to synergize is making Midaire and Shoten have automatic *Direct Strikes* as no mechanic in the game enables that. That will still enable effects like Chain Strategem buff the player but remove some of the damage RNG from it.

BRD's battle voice and DNC's devilment both increase direct hit rate of party member(s). WAR's berserk and MCH's reassemble gives them automatic direct hit (and crit). Sadly, not unique or enabling synergy :(
