Great vid and great pak. The fact that Savotta sells , Large 6 liter side pouches and also med 2l pouch and small 1 liter pouches means you can beef up pack capacity if you need too by adding to side of pouch. There is also a kind of admin/ultility pouch that can go on back of pack as well. Making it a sturdy and versatile pack.

Phil here, I'm a 64 year old over the road truck driver,(OTR). Without too much explanation I'd like an expert opinion,w/o prejudice, to what I might consider in terms of pack size to use as a get home bag. Many videos are geared towards under 40's person within 100 miles from their home,or point of bugout. My first choice was a Condor 3 considering that I may be on either left or right coast as my start point. At approximately 3000 s.i. over 7 pockets, it caught my attention...but will it be too much for that hike home? Thank you for your service.
@neilmckay7586

If A; you can handle that size of bag for several days (including the weight of a fully loaded bag), and B; you can fit all you need inside, then you can make it work. There's no real way of saying whether it's right or wrong for you because I don't know your fitness or requirements. I guess the guaranteed way of finding out is with experience. Hope this helps.

You’re going to want a 60litre bag. That’s basically the minimum for multi day hiking for the average person. You don’t have to fill it but it’s better to have space to carry extra water and food when it’s available. As an older person I recommend something with a more substantial hip belt and suspension system. This will help distribute the load and be much more forgiving. You’re also going to want a stiff frame, carbon fibre or aluminum. This will also aid in distributing the load properly and put less strain on your joints. Some companies like kuiu, and eberlestock make packs that can be removed from the frame so it can bu used to carry other things e.g. Gerry cans, firewood, game, etc. The best get home packs are bighorn sheep hunting packs as they are tough, designed to carry heavy loads and versatile, however they are expensive.

The lack of a drain hole in the main compartment is a design decision - the pockets are drained as they are top-open and exposed to elements. You wouldn't carry sensitive items in the pockets. The main compartment is sealed from the elements, and compromising the bottom would do more harm than good. Think about placing your pack on a damp surface and sucking up water into the interior (sleeping bag/clothes).

I own the same backpack and have zero problems with no drainage at the bottom or non removable waist belt. 1. I doubt that I'll ever wet my backpack so much so it needs to drain water. 2. I see no problems with non removable hip belt. Because it is very usefull for me and I have no interest to remove it whatsoever. I buckle it up every time I hike with it.

Is thee main compartment waterproof throughout? Maybe that is why there is no drain hole?
@krivdik
@krivdik 4 года назад
@@01cthompson yes it is, the entire inside is waterproof, so as long as you pack it well no water should get inside. It is still better to pack any valuables or electronics in extra plastic bag, just to be sure. But so far never had any issues with water getting inside.

Regarding the lack of drain holes on the bottom of the pack: the mentality in the Finnish defense force and border guard is that in order to avoid soaking your gear you're supposed to pack everything in waterproof bags and in addition, preferably line the pack with a large plastic bag. It may be dumb and inconvenient, but what isn't when it comes to the military
@kevinmoore2929
@kevinmoore2929 4 года назад
There's something to be said for using a wet bag in your main compartment. Having been in S&T units during my time in the army, we had to strap up our rucks and duffle bags outside the cab of our vehicle(M939, M939 drop sides and HEMTTs) and having spent three years in Germany going to Grafenwehr and REFORGER, I'm glad I used them. Nothing like traveling 200 miles during a typical German winter to get to your site only to find 3/4 of your gear soaking wet under 1"-2" of mud and snow. At least in the summer, you could dry everything out after hitting the "wash rack"(the invariable summer thunderstorm that lasts two days and it rains sideways the entire time.) Room inside both of my 939s was at a premium as they both had PRC-77s installed. HEMTTs had zero room inside anyways.

They changed the backpack a little, now you tighten it from behind to front and its actually a lot better this way imo. Also even tho I have slightly newer model, think yours has also the option to hide the hip-belt behind the padding (the one that comes off). Granted its a bonus if it would come off and it would be better in everyday life, but few other manufactures have this and most of the time you either have loose strings that will still stick out (I have some of mine hidden with a piece of velcro, but they will still stick out for a 2-3cm). And I believe the drainage holes you talked about are lef out for a reason; In Finland, 10 out of 12 months we got moist air/ground and should you lay your backpack on the ground, Ill guarantee water will get in if theres drainage holes in the bottom. So they made the main comparment water proof, in my experience only way to get it wet is to literally soak it in water so that the water comes from the top. You can hide the hip-belt behind the padding by first removing the padding and putting the straps from the "wrong" side/out-to-in so that they will flatten behind the padding. Then just click them together, tighten and as optional, you can hide the loose ends with velcro etc

Question about your comment on “no drain holes on the bottom of the pack”, should there be holes there? I’ve never noticed them on other packs. Wouldn’t it allow stuff to get wet if you put your pack down on wet ground or on wet snow? I’m asking because I intend on making my own pack, and you have more experience with a lot more gear than me. I want to do it right when I get to it.

Check out Tasmanian Tiger gear, I have the TT TROOPER PACK and it is hands down the best bag I've every bought. 50L bag, daily use, humped 100's of Kms, has a really nice waist belt that's 100% removable, nice wide shoulder straps and waist belt are really adjustable, comfortable with plates/vest on. Molly straps all over the place, so many different pockets inside and out(seriously there are pockets inside pockets love this everything has its spot).2 front Velcro patches (one name tag size, one flag sized), internal straps to secure items, pouch in the back for bladder(is made for one but I have crammed 2 into it) comes is a external waterproof cover that stores in a bottom zippered pocket. most of the pockets have drain holes, the main pouch doesn't though. nice meaty carring handle. I've abused this bag and it still looks fairly new.

For the Pathfinder School's basic class, would the medium pack be large enough? I don't see how everything can fit into the pack that you showed in this video--I'm primarily thinking cooking and cutting gear (two is one and one is none). Assuming that a person would be hiking and not able to go back to their truck for something, would an Alice pack be better? Without giving too much away at this time unless you can, will your new backpack be more like the Sabota or Alice pack? How many days' gear will it carry? I want to buy a pack and other gear as soon as I can and not be caught short. Thanks.

thanks for the review! i just ordered the same pack. next week I'll order the jaakari large. on the large version the hip strap is completely removable. i think not having a drain hole is a good thing . the main compartment seems very water resistant. if you do manage to dunk and soak it you probably need to dry out your gear anyway so dry the pack by the fire while you dry your gear. also being water tight means you could use it to collect water in case you need to process large ammounts of h20 like say if you knew you were about to be hiking through a desert.
@vikingr1000
@vikingr1000 5 лет назад
Going to respectfully disagree with the drain hole in the bottom of the central pack. I get that if you have a bladder in and it ruptures you want it to drain. However, if you have that laptop in there or something else you want dry then a hole in the main compartment will compromise it. This way you can draw string the internal top, and even tape wrap it a couple of passes and be fairly sure that if the pack goes for a swim that the inside will be pretty much dry. So it's a give and take.

vikingr1000 Just put your laptop in protective pouch or better, a protective case. No matter how dry a pack is valuable electronics should be secured. I personally don’t bring a laptop with me anywhere other than work and use a GoPro or cellphone camera and edit video and pictures at home. A laptop is too expensive too put at risk. Also a GoPro is lighter and more expendable, then has better energy options. Just respectfully pointing out from experience.

@AMRAMRS 5 лет назад
@@DrowDove3 I agree. I would not trust a backpack, even if it were the most expensive one to keep my electronics/documents dry. Especially considering I might abuse the pack someday in a hurry or while walking between bushes. Having said that it even confuses me why they tried to make it waterproof by adding a drawstring and then a cloth condom/cap with snaps and then compromise the protection with the right side quick access zipper. It seems slow when retrieving items from the top and unwieldy, uncomfortable yet adds a risky failpoint when accesing from the side.

Hello, Corporal Kelly Sir. If you ever get tired of this bag, I would be more than happy to give it a home. Also, I really like your channel.

By the way, what happened with the "improvised field sutures" video?

I own the smaller minijääkäri. It's great for me. I don't like too many pockets in a backpack because I never manage to put my gear in the same pocket I planned to have it in. I prefer a wide-mouth opening single compartment pack. I love that this pack comes without all the tactical bells and whistles I don't really need that much but the option to add more pockets is there if I need to haul more gear. One internal divider, a waterproof pocket and a main compartment is enough for me personally.

If the main compartment is supposed to be "waterproof" then the drain hole you wanted defeats the purpose Sir. Thanks for the info though.

CorporalsCorner It looks like a nice bag for survival, but for preppers, this bag fits the bill too well, in my opinion. Walk around with that (or any bag with MOLLE) after SHTF, and you're a walking target. If you HAVE to have it, try putting a rain cover on it to hide that MOLLE. I do this with my 5.11 Rush72 backpack, but I much prefer my COVRT bag. As always, great video.

@horatiodreamt Of course you would. If someone thinks you're worth the risk, that is. Someone with a MOLLE bag would stick out a lot more than just your average school bag. People look at MOLLE bags and think supplies for days. People look at the school bag and think clothes, family photos, and a couple cans of ravioli.

I don't believe he has an in depth video on the topic but it's really not that hard if you know how to. My tips would be to keep the heaviest items closest to the centre of your back; Sleeping bags and bulkier items etc. should go in the bottom; and, pack stuff you'll need more often, like a coat or poncho (if it rains), a warmer layer (if it cools down), a first aid kit (should something go wrong), food (if you plan to eat whilst on the move) and so on, near the top. Also the likes of a bed roll, blanket or roll mat should be strapped onto the bottom and if you have a second roll it should go on the top, the heavier of the two should go on the bottom. Hope this helps. 👍 Atb

Great video and pack. I rarely see any of your videos with you using an axe. Do you find it better using a saw over an axe ?
@garyminick1050

A Silky saw is quieter much lighter to pack and is superior to an axe or hatchet.

If Daniel Boone had a Silky saw he would have preferred it over the tomahawk.
